A few hours’ drive from Prague, Pernštejn Castle in the Czech Republic serves as the setting for Orlok’s gatehouse and courtyard, where shots of Orlok and Thomas crossing beneath the castle’s entrance and across the inner yard were filmed. The fortress already has a Nosferatu connection, having been used by Werner Herzog in his 1979 film Nosferatu the Vampyre, and Robert Eggers, unaware of this during production, found it “kind of awesome” to be able to use the Herzog castle without using the Herzog castle by shooting it from an entirely different angle. - Gregory James Wakeman
