"Housed in a century-old mansion that once served as the French governor’s residence and a garrison, this converted property sits in a quiet residential quarter of tree-lined lanes dotted with traditional Lao homes and mid-century Indochinese bungalows. The architecture blends French colonial style with Lao touches and is set amid lush botanical gardens. Suites feature exquisite handwoven tapestries depicting mythical creatures, created by local women from the social enterprise Ock Pop Tok. Guests can dine al fresco under a safari tent at the hotel’s grill and should try the buffalo larb — a Lao-style minced salad brightened with kaffir lime, herbs and a peppery kick. An unexpected delight is the pair of resident bunnies, Mano and Mani, who ceremoniously appear to welcome arriving visitors." - Rachna Sachasinh
