The Best Restaurants To BYOB In Chicago

"Scientific trials have led us to the following conclusion: fried food is best enjoyed with booze. And with its massive fried appetizer platter, 1492 Cuban Fusion Cafe in Humboldt Park is a great spot to show up with a few friends and a six-pack. The loaded plate comes with plantains, stuffed potato balls, croquettes, and three types of empanadas. Their Cubano or ropa vieja with savory yellow rice are both fantastic, and make sure to grab a guava and cheese pastelito. The colorful space is great for smaller groups and miraculously seems to always have at least one table open even when it's busy." - josh barnett, adrian kane, john ringor

The Best Restaurants In Humboldt Park

"1492 Cuban Fusion Cafe has no shortage of personality—from colorful knick knacks to friendly servers giving TED talks about everything in the massive appetizer sample. And while scaling that fried food mountain with friends is great, so is the rest of their Cuban and Latin food. The menu is long and reads like a short novel. Don’t feel like reading small novels? Here are the Sparknotes: go for a guava-cheese pastelito and coffee in the morning, a Cubano for lunch, or ropa vieja for dinner. Plus, you can even bring your favorite bottle of wine or six-pack since they’re BYOB. " - josh barnett, john ringor

1492 Cuban Fusion Cafe - Review - West Town - Chicago - The Infatuation

"1492 Cuban Fusion Cafe is overflowing with personality—from colorful walls of knick knacks to friendly servers giving a detailed walkthrough of every type of plantain in the massive appetizer platter. And while that mountain of fried food is great—so is the rest of their Cuban and Latin dishes. The menu is long, so here's a quick game plan. Google
My girlfriend and I really enjoy our dinner here. We were looking for a new type of cuisine, so we decided why not Cuban cuisine? We weren't disappointed, the food was great, the service was great and overall a really good time. The food was all very fresh. We both decided to get tortas and honestly they were massive for the price and delicious. The empanadas we loved also especially the ropa vieja empanada. Overall definitely worth the visit and great bang for your buck option. The total came out to be around $33.

Google
Was looking for Cuban restaurant for some time since the one I used to go to closed. It's a small little place no frill simple, you get in order at the counter or sit at the table and place your order The food was surprisingly good I had the ropa vieja It was tasty it comes with the rice a little salad and black beans It was on the top side but still very Good I was surprised in a good way.

Google
This RESTURANT has good food, but we encountered a few issues. First and foremost, the dirty dish that my jibarito was served on is disgusting. If I had seen this before, I ate it. I would have walked out without eating. Once I ate, I wrapped up the paper and LOOK at that plate. HOW DO YOU SERVE FOOD ON DIRTY PLATES !!! I told the waiter/server about it, and he just said oh sorry. Nothing else. This is unacceptable. The coffee was delicious, if you could actually drink it. It was so hot the entire time we had dinner because it's served in a stainless steel mug, cute, just not practical since we both burned our mouth several times. We had to take th coffee in a to go cup just to be able to drink it. They also never came back to refill our water cups. The jibarito did not have much meat and no garlic or seasoning on top. The chicken soup was delicious. The empanadas are great and a good choice.

Google
Came in for black bean soup, plantain chips, and cheese croquettes. It was all amazing. Loaded up with garlic sauce and hot sauce. Cafe con leche for dessert. The staff is super welcome and nice. Definitely recommend stopping in.

Yelp
We always look forward to visiting our daughter in Logan Square because there's always a VERY good chance that she will suggest 1492 for lunch, or dinner, or whatever. And so it was last Saturday! She and her mom got the Ropa de Vieja dinners, and I had the Lechon Asado sandwich. All were great, as usual. The patrons and the staff are all so welcoming. It's like walking into a big family gathering. . . If your family is from Cuba. And if it IS, then eres increíblemente afortunado! in my opinion. 1492 never disappoints. It's one of my favorites.

Yelp
While searching for a lunch spot with my kids, I wanted to take them to somewhere new and NOT a franchise. They opted for Cuban and we made our way over to 1492. When we arrived we were welcomed and directed to a table. Menus were brought over shortly and we were given time to review. My girls were thrilled to find milkshakes on the menu - and such great prices. They got the pina colada and mango versions. We also ordered the empanada trio and papas rellenas as appetizers. For entrees we order the masitas de cerdo fritas with white rice & black beans, Elena Ruz Cuban sandwhich and the sandwhich de pollo empanizado. Everything was great. The black beans and pork needed just a little bit more salt, but I was able to add from the side and also use the chimichurri to add more flavor. My girls loved their sandwhiches. They can't wait to come back and try other items on the menu. My oldest is already talking about coming back and now Cuban is her new favorite!

Yelp
Rating: (3 out of 5) Location: 1492 Cuban Fusion - 2615 W. North Ave, Chicago, IL I had a craving for plantains and rice and finally decided to try out 1492 Cuban Fusion. The interior is super charming--Cuban-inspired decor, cozy atmosphere, and plenty of seating. The staff was welcoming and knowledgeable, and I appreciated how they took the time to answer my questions. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of vegetarian options on the menu, so I sampled a few dishes. I started with the café con leche, which was rich and delicious. The veggie empanada was good--cheesy and flavorful--but I do wish it had more vegetables in the filling. I couldn't choose between sweet or savory plantains, so I got both. The sweet plantains were the standout for me. I also had black beans and rice, which paired perfectly with the plantains, plus a side of fries. Everything was a bit on the carb-heavy side, so I took some home. While the food was tasty overall, I would have loved to see more veggie-focused options. For a first visit, I'm giving it a solid 3 out of 5. I'll definitely be back to try some of the more traditional dishes on the menu.

Yelp
We drive 25 minutes to come here for great food and excellent service! Our visit today included a media noche and a Cuban sandwich- both of which were flavorful, fresh, moist and delicious. The third dish was the lechon asado with a side of white rice and black beans, and sweet plantains. The meat was super tender and juicy, and the beans were also tasty. Hot, crispy fried yuca and well-seasoned ham croquetas rounded out our main meal. Flan is usually how we end the meal but today we had the tocinillo (part flan part cake) and it was equally sweet and delicious with a traditional cafe con leche and cortado. Service is always friendly and timely, and the space is bright and cozy. It's our go-to for delicious comida criolla!

Yelp
Popped into this place on a whim and I wasn't disappointed. My friend got the sweet bread sandwich and the pork was amazing. I got the pulled pork plate with white rice and beans and the fried sweet plantain. Oh man, those plantains were so, so good. I could eat them for days. The pork, mixed with rice and beans and the mojo sauce...what a pleasant surprise this was! Highly recommend this place for delicious Cuban food. Wait staff was quick and helpful as well.

Excellent restaurant walking distance from Wicker park! Delicious food, friendly staff and affordable prices. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. I absolutely love their warm French fries with the white sauce. The chicken sandwich was decent but I added the white sauce because it was dry and a little hard.

Yelp
I love this cute, cozy little Cuban cafe. They sell coffee, guava pastries, and lots of authentic Cuban options. I highly recommend the lechon, masitas de cerdo, fried yucca, and empanadas. Good sandwiches also. Try them out!

Yelp
It has been SO long since i have had empanadas. This place has an appetizer of trio of empanadas that you can choose from. My selection was ground beef, chicken and ropa vieja. Every bite was a delight. The papas rellenos and yuca frita were great as well. Their garlic sauce can go with anything! Wish they sold it in stores. The decor was awesome as well. There were some tiles with funny sayings in Spanish. The staff was very friendly as well. I only wish they had a liquor license.

Tee G.

Yelp
My first time here--and my first time trying authentic Cuban food--and I'm so glad I did. The plate was flavorful, well-balanced, and deeply satisfying. The sweet plantains especially? A must. Everything tasted like it belonged together. The ambiance felt right--Cuban music in the background, a warm vibe, and a cozy decor that matched the food. You could tell this place had heart. That said, the service was a bit rushed when it came to asking questions about the menu. The staff seemed short-handed and overwhelmed, which made parts of the ordering process feel slightly rushed. Still, they handled it with as much grace as they could. I get it--and I appreciated their effort. Overall, I enjoyed myself and left full and happy. Looking forward to returning again when they're better staffed and can give the experience even more room to breathe. Thank you.

Yelp
We discovered this restaurant driving around North Avenue! Everything was on point, the flavors are authentic, and it feels more Cuban to me than other Cuban restaurants in town. We went there for lunch in a weekday and it was almost full of people. We tried the Mamey Milkshake that was creamy and delicious, best milkshake ever. Then we tried Cuban Sandwich (regular) and Ropa Vieja with Congri and Cassava and Mojo side. I'd judge a Cuban restaurant after their Black Beans in this case the Congri was really nice. They also bring a nice chimichurri and other sauces to the table to accompany your food (that are not super Cuban but were really good! Finally Cuban Coffee that tasted homemade and Guava Pastries that were really flaky and good. I'd say all in all very good, the menu is long and rich with many options. Next time I'd like to try Croquetas and Papas. I recommend it, so far my favorite Cuban spot in town!

Yelp
I have no idea how this place has 5 stars. We ordered delivery and ordered masas de puerco, lechón, and skirt steak as entrees. 3 empanadas from the appetizer menu plus 1 extra empanada, a side of white rice and a side of tostones. The masas de puerco were inedible. They were over fried, dry and tasteless. Usually masas de puerco are crunchy on the inside with a soft tender inside. This was not that. This at best was really bad chicharrón. They forgot the order of empanadas and the one they did sent was dry. The skirt steak was a solid 3, the lechón a solid 4. If you order those I guess you'll be fine. But avoid ordering from here altogether, there's so many better Cuban options in the city.

Yelp
Love the food and coffee here. Very nice atmosphere and servers are very nice and attentive.

Yelp

Yelp
Pretty good! We came in closer to closing time. Service was good. I love the dining area, lots of cool stuff on the walls to look over. The food was good. Both my partner and I enjoyed.

Sandra G.

Yelp
A happy atmosphere that makes you feel at home. The sandwiches were delicious and the warm and welcoming staff were even better. We look forward to coming back soon.

Yelp
I've been wanting to venture out and try new cuisines so my boyfriend and I decided to come to 1492 Cuban Fusion based on their great reviews. For the appetizer, we ordered the empanada trio (chicken, pork, and veggie). They were okay. The chicken was a bit dry but we added the chimichurri sauce to it and that elevated the chicken empanada. For our meals, I ordered the Chuletas Ahumadas (smoked pork chops) with yellow rice and sweet friend plantains. The pork chops were very flavorful and tender! Enjoyed every bite! The yellow rice was good as well as the plantains. My boyfriend ordered the Ropa Vieja with Congri rice and sweet fried plantains and he loved his food. I tasted his congri rice and it was packed with flavor! He also ordered a virgin piña colada and said it was made very well. I had café con leche (coffee with milk) after my food and the coffee was excellent! I'm happy they have non dairy alternatives. I ordered my coffee with almond milk. If this restaurant was closer, I would definitely grab my morning cup of coffee from here! The waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I appreciated her honesty and how she's tried several items on the menu. This made our experience that much better. Overall ratings: Service 5/5 Empanadas 3/5 Chuletas Ahumadas 4/5 Ropa Vieja 5/5 Virgin Piña Colada 5/5 Café con Leche 5/5 Will return to try the sandwiches! I saw quite a few people ordering those.

Yelp
Delicious and very affordable authentic Cuban casual family restautant - so many choices, we have to go back to try more menu items ! We sent our relatives who live nearby to try it out !

Yelp
"1.5 out of ten. I never imagined that something which brought so much joy could be turned into something so unpleasant. Picture bread with the rough texture of a New York Timberland boot; if you manage to chew through that, you'll encounter a giant, soggy tomato reminiscent of 'James and the Giant Peach' that turns the wooden buckwheat into something unappetizing. The flavoring, egg lettuce, comes without onion slices, but instead features onion skins! The steak has a texture akin to a Gucci belt, perfect for keeping even the naughtiest kids in line--Dennis the Menace wouldn't stand a chance! I was hoping for a Cuban twist on something resembling a Latin torta, but instead, I ended up stuck in a workshop. Until next time!"

Yelp
Will start by saying I plan to return to try more platters. It is a lovely laid back family owned atmosphere. Just the type of place I like - local with good food and service. The service was super courteous and friendly. We ordered: - The trio empanadas - ham/cheese, ropa vieja, chicken. All great. - the Cuban sandwich - my friend got this but she felt like it was too much mayonnaise. The staff was courteous and made another sandwich without mayo. - pulled pork platter which came with rice and black beans and sweet plantains - The stewed pork was juicy and decent portion that made for tasty leftovers. - cafe con leche with coconut I think. This was a large drink. If you like coffee, give it a try. It's not strong on the coconut I think but I like coconut. - ropa vieja sandwich- this was a to go order for hubby. It was very very good. Overall good experience and work love to come back to try steak entrees and other sandwiches

Yelp
I stopped by and picked up the 6 inch Ropa Vieja sandwich an order of yuca and one guava pastry. Pictured is only half of the sandwich and half of the yuca. I was able to get two meals out of it. I also ordered the café Cortado and that was good too. Everything was good, but I'm only giving it four stars because I think they could've added more meat to the sandwich.

Yelp
I had been to this restaurant when it was another Cuban Restaurant, not so good back then. But last visit was perfect. Great food even better prices!

Yelp
Wow! I came here with my mom and aunt who are in town visiting. Service was lovely, felt like I was interacting with family. We started with the 3 ham and cheese empanadas. We were giving chimichurri sauce, ketchumayo, and some delicious garlic sauce. For main dishes, I had the churrasco with white rice, avocado and mariquitas )plantain chips. My mom had the lechón asado with yellow rice and tostones. My aunt had the bistec encebollado with sweet plantains and brown rice. We were all in love with our meals and honestly obsessed. Will be bringing everyone here!!
google avatar

Victor C.

Yelp
Just ordered the Cuban sandwich. Absolutely terrible. It's not even pressed, and no favor to the port. I don't recommend the sandwich or cafe con leche.
google avatar

Tom Z.

Yelp
Really great Cuban place that is rare to find in Chicago! This place does it right and at the level of what I have had in Miami. We got a batido de mamey, banana batido, ropa vieja sandwich, Cuban sandwich, and croquetas. All exactly what we wanted! Service was lovely and the overall vibe is homey and down to earth.

Yelp
The food was absolutely deliciou. the wait staff was very nice. I am definitely coming back.

Isabel R.

Yelp
to be honest i didn't even want to give this place one star. If I could give them 0 I would. This place was the worse. I ordered a steak sandwich a jibarito and side of rice. Mind you there was one family there when I got there. I ordered to go. A couple of families got there after me for dine in. They got their food before me. Irritated me so much. 45 mins go by I still dont have my food. I ask the guy what is going on with my order he tells me 5 more mins. 5 more mins for a steak sandwich and a jibarito. like how ?! I didn't get my order until an hour later. Their service sucks. They could have communicated with me if something was wrong. But the 2 servers just kept looking at me smiling like something was funny. The food was NASTY when I got it. The rice was salty. The steak had no flavor. They literally put two small pieces of steak in both sanwiches. What a joke. I will not be going here again. I hope the two waiters smile at this review.

Saira L.

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing. I ordered the Ropa Veija with white rice and black beans and it was perfectly. I also ordered the trio empanadas and they were pretty good. Ambiance is very vibrant and fun. Trust me you need to try the food here. I left very happy. I also got the cafe con leche and cheese and guava pastry. Both had a subtle hint of sweetness but still very flavorful
google avatar

Charles B.

Yelp
Great neighborhood restaurant with excellent food for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Everything I've had here is excellent from the fish a la rumba, to the black bean soup, to the jibarito. Easy street parking

Yelp
They lost their touch. Their Cuban sandwich used to be loaded with juicy, flavorful pork. Now they are skimping on their meat portions, and it's so dry. So sad because I really loved their Cuban sandwich!

Gina G.

Yelp
Friendly Host, delicious food and authenticity all here! Travel from California and this was my first time eating Cuban food, try the kola champagne!

Abel R.

Yelp
The place is great,I'm Cuban visiting Chicago with my wife and I never thought we were going to find a place like this. Service is great, people is really friendly and nice, and food is incredible, is the real flavor of the Cuban food, I remembered the taste of the restaurants back in our country and 100% sure that we will visit this place again.
google avatar

Ted A.

Yelp
Came here randomly on a whim and it turned out pretty good. The workers were pleasant and the food was pretty good. Honestly, I forgot the name of what I ordered, but it was enjoyable. The dinner plates come with a main dish and two sides. In my case, it was stewed pork, fried plantains, and rice and beans mixed together. The rice and beans were drier than I expected so I added some extra beans to it. The pork was flavorful but a bit oily. Fried plantains are always a good choice. My friends tried the chicken (okay) and stewed tomato beef (very good). The price was acceptable and the portions were pretty generous so I would consider it a decently good value.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches,,great service .,sabrosas milkshakes ,platter muy sabroso $ no muy caro

Yelp

Yelp
By far the best meal I have had in a very long time best Cafecito on the northside of Chicago had and I've been so late in the evening or we had this place I would've probably had more coffee. Sandwiches were phenomenal service was amazing. The location is small but make you feel very much at home. This is now a family favorite in My Home you must've come out and try it
google avatar

Nelson R.

Yelp
the sandwiches continue to be really hit or miss, the shakes (batidos) and croquetas are still great.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Loved every second of our experience. The food was excellent and the waiter suggested great choices from beginning to end. I can't wait to return and try more.
google avatar

George M.

Yelp
The friendliest Cuban-American staff. Great atmosphere with great decor. Wonderful food, music & fantastic menu! 10/10 excellent!
google avatar

Dana M.

Yelp
Today I went here for lunch with my coworkers the food, service and ambiance was on point. I love the atmosphere. Everyone working there seems pretty nice. My coworker who is from Cuba says he reminds her a lot of home of her favorite restaurants and I've had their chicken salad which is so yummy and also.

Senders F.

Yelp
The food portion is so so bad. See below! This cost about 50$. It was chicken and beef in case someone is wondering if it is some kind of special meet or something. This is my second time ordering with them and both experiences were bad.
google avatar

Alex N.

Yelp
Neighborhood Cuban flavor providing proud flavor and taste Food: Empanada de camaron - 3/5 - minuscule pieces of shrimp inside; really not worth trying Sandwich cubano - 4.5/5 - very good but not the best I've ever had. I recommend paying for add-on of avocado, because avocado makes everything taste better! Jibarito con lechon - 5/5 - tender savory perfection, a favorite! Jibarito con pollo - 5/5 - excellent and balanced flavor, a favorite especially for those avoiding red meat! Jibarito con ropa vieja - 3.73/5 - just personally don't prefer the taste of ropa vieja Media noche - 4/5 - it says sweet bread but I didn't taste the difference of this versus the regular Cuban sandwich (torta cubana ) Masitas de cerdo fritas - 4/5 - good but not outstanding Fish fillet a la rumba - 5/5 - very good. Loved the fried salty style with peppers and onion over top Licuado / Batido de mamey - 5/5 - amazing, a definite favorite! Licuado / Batido de guayaba - 5/5 - excellent, loved it! Pastelito de guayaba - 3.75/5 - pretty simple flaky pastry with a little guava jelly filling Ambience: Loaded with proud cultural values and images of a classic time Service: Friendly and efficient

Yelp
I've never left 1492 hungry or disappointed! Exceptional Cuban food and a friendly atmosphere. I've been here 3x and it's a favorite. It's a great place for lunch and dinner. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Took my mom for Mother's Day dinner . Amazing Cuban ambiance and authentic Cuban music. Both dinners were amazing. Yellow rice, black beans and plantains were all amazing. Both the chicken and steak were seasoned perfectly.

Yelp
Decided to eat here with my daughter while we were in the area for an event. I don't have any Cuban restaurants in my city and my daughter and I often crave the Cuban food from our favorite spot in Florida. Their menu is very large and has tons of authentic and fusion items on it. It's a smallish quaint space with a counter you can order to go from or have table service as well. We dined in. I loved the Ropa vieja and my daughter loved her Cuban. I would definitely go back if I was in the area.
