Where to Find Gumbo in Houston | Eater Houston

"Located in the newly opened Lyric Market in downtown, 1929 Po-Boy Kitchen offers three different gumbos on its menu. The Swamp Water is a traditional chicken and andouille sausage gumbo; the Bayou Water combines chicken and andouille sausage with shrimp and crabmeat; and the Gumbo Z’Herbes offers a meatless alternative made with leafy greens and vegetables." - Minh T. 1929 Po-Boy Kitchen - Review - Downtown - Houston - The Infatuation

"There are a lot of places to get po’boys in Houston, but 1929 Po-Boy Kitchen serves versions worth going out of your way for. The Cajun food stall’s sandwiches are massive and served on toasted baguettes. Order yours with fried shrimp, which stays perfectly crispy no matter how many swipes of mayonnaise they encounter. And for dessert, go for the puffed-up beignets covered in a mountain of powdered sugar." - Gianni Greene

I went to 1929 restaurant on May 6, 2025, specifically to pick up Yakamein as a surprise lunch for my sissy. She's from New Orleans, where this is a special dish. Upon arrival, the gentleman who worked there told me they had sold out the Oxtail Yakamein, and the seafood Yakamein was not ready yet. I couldn't wait because I had an appt to get to. As I was about to leave, I met the owner/executive chef Monica Landry. She is the absolute best. I explained to her that I came there because purposely because I heard her restaurant made the best Yakamein. Also wanted to surprise my sis with her New Orleans hometown delicacy for lunch. After hearing what brought me in that day, Monica personally made the Yakamein for my sister and 1 for me as well. She personally blessed us on the house. It was the spirit The Holy Spirit that led her to do that. She and I were both crying and testifying about how good God is, on our purpose helping & blessing others. The food was SOOO OUTSTANDING!!! Monica Landry touched my heart in a special way because she made it so personal for me. Thank you, Monica! Sorry it took me so long to post my review.

This is a very welcoming space. This is the 1st restaurant you see when you walk in the Lyric market. Prime position to receive the most customers. Upon entering, I was not expecting to see so many empty seats at dinnertime until I saw the layout and noticed it's an open seating space and most of the people sat around the other side by the bar and live music. Also, there's seating outside for those that prefer alfresco. Very nice atmosphere and quiet. So let's get into the food. I asked Ivan some questions about the menu and he was very knowledgeable about the food and referred to the cook if he wasn't sure if the dish was spicy or not. But let me tell you now the catfish platter was the best fish I've had since I came to Houston 4 years ago! Very well seasoned and fries to perfection! It was crispy on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside! 2 nice size portions with homemade tarter sauce paired on the side. The potato salad was just like grandma used to make! You can take a ride back in time to your childhood eating the potato salad after school as your snack. I also closed out the meal with the smothered greens. Great job. I enjoyed the food and will be back.

1929 never disappoints! Mo is the owner and chef and she goes above and beyond for every one of her customers. It’s always a treat eating here, i’ve never tried something I wasn’t blown away by. So much flavor!!! A must visit for anyone in the Houston area. It’s as close to actually being in New Orleans you are going to get around here! So yummy.

Google
This was a great find. I knew about the Lyric Market Food Hall but had never been to eat. We opted for a Weekend Brunch at this Creole spot & it was wonderful. My Oxtail Omelet was seasoned perfectly and the potatoes too. It was huge & I actually got 2 meals out of it. My Husband enjoyed the Strawberry Pancakes & let me taste them...phenomenal. Really nice flavor with crispy edges just like I like them. Service was great. Very friendly. I also enjoyed the Food Hall itself. Lots of huge windows & natural light. We came early so the crowd was light but it was filling up as we were leaving. Will definitely be back to try an actual Po'Boy.

Google
Mannnnnn, I taken here by my gf to experience the fried green tomatoes “HER WAY” which is fgt w/sauteed shrimp, crab, and crawfish, drizzled with remoulade sauce and mixed cheese on top! When I tell you, IT WAS EVERYTHING!!! The fgt were cooked to PERFECTION!!! The Wonderful beignets were hot, fresh, with a crispy outside and a soft airy inside!!! And the Sweet Potato Bread Pudding is absolutely Delightful!! This place is a Hidden Gem in the Lyric Market Downtown but it’s a MUST TRY!!!!

Google
Delicious, delicious, delicious. My husband and I are visiting Huston for new years and he came across this spot. Looking at the photos of the dishes we noticed a very interesting oxtail dish we had to try. The flavors are out of this world and the portion size is worth the money. To top off the dish, we got traditional beignets that melted in our mouths. Service was phenomenal! Ms Monica is so sweet. Such a delight to step out of traditional food. A Caribbean &Creole explosion. A must try.

I went to the 1929 Po-boy Kitchen this week. This restaurant is hands down 10 out of 10. The Oxtails Yakamein was so flavorful with just the right amount of spice. The oxtails were falling off the bones and seasoned to perfection. Even the broth was super delicious. This food was so good, my friend and I had to return to try out the breakfast. Just like the lunch experience, the breakfast did not disappoint. The pancakes were delicious; they were fluffy with just the right amount of crisp. The eggs were scrambled and cooked all the way through, yet they somehow managed to be soft and fluffy. I’ve never experienced eggs that way. The flower created from a strawberry placed on top of the pancakes was the real showstopper. What I like the most was the service provided by the owner Ms. Monica. She was very hospitable. The service was top tier with an experience like going to eat at a down-home environment of a welcoming family or friend. All around great experience. Go eat at 1929 Po-boy Kitchen located in the Lyric Market; you won’t be disappointed.

Google
Service was a 10, atmosphere was great and the only thing I didn’t like was the greens. They used a deep roux for the broth and it wasn’t something I liked. Everything else was delicious. Highly recommend the boudin rolls and catfish and shrimp meal. You can get them fried or blackened

Yelp
The food was fabulous period! This spot is located in the lyric food hall in downtown Houston. Some of the best pancakes I've ever had. Fluffy with a great crust. Don't hesitate. Just order them! 3 nice size pancakes. I shared an order so I could also get an omelette. Veggie omlette was typical taste however they are made with cream & I asked for no cream so I'm sure ordered as made would be more delightful. Potatoes with peppers & onions were fine. Needed to add salt & pepper. Everything else was so flavorful I almost wonder if they just forgot to season them because they were allowing me to order breakfast during lunch hours. Greens are quite different. Hard to describe but they are spicy & made in like a gravy...perhaps a roux. Not vinegary. Not sweet just kinda earthy. Different but good. Others with me ordered Shrimp & grits and oxtails, everyone raved about their food. Sweet potato bread pudding also had pumpkin in it & was tasty. The primary lady in charge (owner?) was very pleasurable & accommodating. The food takes a little time so plan accordingly, but just know it's worth the wait! I highly recommend you check them out!

Yelp
Food was so good! I had been trying to get here since moving nearby earlier this summer. Definitely was worth the wait. I love trying new things and I didn't know what to expect but it was very good, nothing like any other dish I've ever had. The broth was multidimensional: sweet, savory and spicy with plenty of slow cooked onions. Oxtails were tender and awesome, my only complaint is that I wanted some more broth to take home Service was great, took our orders and brought food out to us. Nice ambience and staff were attentive and responsive. They anticipated what we would need and returned at the right moments to check in with us. Seating is convenient and you're allowed to sit anywhere in the market. Views were nice and perfect for people watching. I'll go back there anytime and plan too. Will try the bread pudding the next time I go

Yelp
I went in April & I can't them out of my head! The lady was absolutely amazing she was so sweet! She recommended I try the oxtails & grits. 10000000/10 they were so good and so flavorful the grits were cooked perfectly! I also got a side of blueberry pancakes they were so delicious! It was a great atmosphere loved that I was able to sit and enjoy the atmosphere despite it being like a cafeteria style.

Yelp
This was my second time eating here but I remember the first time being different, in a good way. Being from New Orleans, this poboy was not at all what I expected or was hoping for. I was really looking forward to my food but was disappointed when it was brought to my table. A real poboy does not consist of 6 jumbo shrimp. The shrimp were so large that I couldn't even close the bread and eat it as a proper sandwich. I ended up taking them off the bread and just ate the shrimp. I really enjoyed the French fries though. I do give kudos to them for using real French bread, although mine was almost too hard to chew. I don't really see myself going back again.
google avatar

Margaret W.

Yelp
$50 for gumbo and a poboy! What a rip off! The gumbo could kill you with the salt alone, don't get me wrong... I love flavor, but this is overkill. Never going back
google avatar

Chrissy P.

Yelp
A sugar rush that was needed! The service was super fast and the woman that checked me out was super sweet. The place is located inside of the lyric market food hall, so it's chill. The sweet potato bread pudding was good and filling
google avatar

Yelp
This PoBoy was amazing. Something I loved about it was that instead of using mayo (gross) they used a remoulade, and it was delicious! Something I did like was the bread-to-fish ratio. Way too much bread which gave the illusion that there wasn't enough fish. However, the flavor was super good! Another thing to add: very pricey. Overall, I will definitely come back!

Yelp
Delicious food. The best Louisiana food I've had outside of Louisiana. Love it! Looking forward to visiting again.

Yelp
Most authentic New Orleans food in Houston, hands down! Customer service was the best thing on the menu! Mama Mo was delightful and has a beautiful soul. Absolutely amazing flavorful dishes. Great portions and definitely fresh. Beignets were delicious and don't get me started on the bread pudding! My husband and I talked about how much we enjoyed our meal days after our visit. Located in the beautiful Lyric Market food hall downtown; parking is free with any purchase from food hall (just enter ticket at exit gate then scan QR code on purchase receipt). There is live entertainment there on Thursday and Friday evenings. 1929 Po-Boy Kitchen is at the top of our list and we will unquestionably return to try additional items on the menu.

Yelp
located inside of food court. don't let that stop you... absolutely amazing! rich in flavor and pull-apart tender

Yelp
My husband and I went for a date night to check out the famous yakamein and boy was it amazing! It's has different type of food restaurants surrounding it and a very nice bar up front. The service and friendliness of the staff was top tier! We ordered the oxtail and seafood yakamein and it was heaven. It's about 30 a bowl but boy is it worth it. We will definitely be back. I think I'll go back this weekend!

Yelp
Another fantastic lunch with Ms Monica...will surely return, Creole at its bestFlavorful, great customer care.

Yelp
I was so excited to support this Black-owned restaurant and couldn't wait to try their gumbo. Unfortunately, I was completely disgusted to find an extremely long strand of hair in my food. It ruined the experience, and I had to throw away both orders. My boyfriend and I were deeply disappointed. Definitely not the experience we were hoping for.

Sedric R.

Yelp
Let me tell you that this place has to be the BEST KEPT SECRET in Houston! My wife and I were visiting from San Antonio. I'm originally from New Orleans and know exactly what the food should taste like. The food here is absolutely DELICIOUS! We tried the BBQ shrimp, red beans & rice, boudin egg rolls, and the shrimp po boy with fresh cut seasoned fries. Everything is fresh and made to order. My wife & I said these are the best BBQ shrimp we've ever tried! The bread on the po boy is authentic and directly from Gambino's in New Orleans. If you know, you know. The owner is sweet and even took the time to ask us if we were enjoying the food. MAJOR understatement! You all need to come out to support her restaurant. You will NOT be disappointed!!!

Yelp
10's Across the boards!!!! I absolutely love this place! The food and the service are all tens in my book! I came here about two weeks ago... After hearing from a coworker about how good the gumbo was... I am from New York city and have been working downtown Houston for the last five weeks. The food in houston is so good, so I knew I was in for a treat or at least I'd hoped. I imagined I would get the gumbo but when I arrived there and looked at the menu, I was a bit on the fence about several things. I just didn't know what to get I mean everything sounded really good. There was a young lady there, who had just placed an order and she was with another friend who had also just placed an order they seemed to be frequent customers, so I asked what they would recommend. One of the young ladies exclaimed, "I absolutely love the Oxtail Yakkamein!" I responded, "the oxtail what?" She said it again, and laughed. Once I heard about what all was in it, I knew I had to try it. The young man behind the counter, Shawn, was the one who helped me place my order! What a sweetie! I wound up getting the Oxtail Yakkamein with some yummy seafood on top, as well! Woweeee! And I really mean, woweeee! What a dish! I don't think I've ever eaten a dish like this! The oxtails were humongous and incredibly tender and flavorful! I could barely finish one in my first serving. I definitely ate on this dish three times and was full all three times so know that the price is absolutely perfect! The broth, the collard greens, the boiled eggs, the seafooood!!! Oh my goodness! This place is a must!!! I leave for NY just after Christmas and am hoping yo get back there to get this dish before I leave! I tried to get this dish again today, but since the owner and chef that prepares this dish was on vacation. The dish was unavailable. There was a young lady and a young man that were working there and they took very good care of me considering I placed an order online for the dish and then when I went to pick it up, it was unavailable. I wasn't even mad, lol, they were so kind and gracious, and sent me away with a few eggrolls and some rice and beans. The food was so good and hit the spot really nicely before my performance this evening. Thanks you two! P.S. The first time I went, while I was waiting for my dish, Shawn offered me a sample of the sweet potato bread pudding! Yummmmy! Love this place!

Yelp
I left happy. I love food and I love eating so that's not hard to do, yet it's not as common as one would think. I will say that the po boy was fairly standard. It didn't STAND OUT amongst any others I've had but it was good. The boudin egg rolls though omg. I ate the whole plate of them myself. Sooo delicious. I will absolutely be back for that Yakamein & beignets! Or sweet potato bread pudding. Everyone I encountered was very nice & I love supporting black business especially as a fellow Louisianan

Yelp
So since it's Black Restaurant Week and My Birthday my best friend asked where did I want to go. I've been wanting to try 1929 Po Boy so here we are. The only person working at this time was kind and offered some suggestions. He was the only person, cooking, checking people out, and serving. Not acceptable. The red snapper was OUT. The ettouffee that was supposed to go with the grilled catfish po boy was out. The red beans and rice had too much chili powder and was a pour replacement. I wish he would've told me what he did have. The swap water was scorched. The one thing I thoroughly enjoyed was the fried green tomatoes and the company of the other patrons. I'm sad because I was excited. I am willing to try one more time though my birthday dinner was bad.

Yelp
So this was first on the stop when I landed in Houston. It's located inside of Lyric Market which is a food court of other restaurant options as well. Closer to where the bathrooms are located you will find a bar area as well along with a sushi spot. My cousin and I both wanted the Yakamein but they were sold out so we settled for the Bayou Water. I got the bayou water without crabmeat since I'm allergic to it and my cousin added greens to hers. I also ordered creole BBQ Shrimp. Once your order is placed they provide you with a buzzer for your order. When my buzzer went off one of the gentlemen from the kitchen brought our food over to the table which I found very hospitable. My Bayou Water was missing the shrimp that comes with it but once my cousin brought it to there attention they made some and brought it over. My cousin ordered a side of greens and thought it would come on the side but instead it was added to the Bayou Water. The Bayou water was hearty, flavorful, and rich in taste. The bowl was more than I expected. That was authentic New Orleans flavoring. As for the creole bbq shrimp they were overcook so the shrimp were mushy and the shells were hard to remove but the sauce my god. I would recommend this place. They have good customer service. The proportion size match the price of the food. I would love to spin the block again to try some other items.

Cynthia A.

Yelp
Wish I got her name, but she was super sweet. Service was impeccable and the fooddd. Oh my gawd. So glad we stopped here before heading to the airport. There's parking inside. Wish I would've known that before parking on the street. lol But again the food... sheesh. My mom had the catfish platter with red beans n rice and potato salad. I had the oxtail ramen. Everything and I mean every thing was full of flavor. Would definitely come back. Casual setting in an upscale cafeteria type of vibe. Didn't expect that either but it wasn't too busy and it was clean.

Yelp
Nestled in the heart of town, 1929 Po Boy Kitchen delivers a culinary experience that's nothing short of extraordinary. My recent visit was a revelation, with each dish showcasing the kitchen's mastery over Southern cuisine. The fish and grits with shrimp were the star of the meal. The fish was perfectly seasoned and fried to a golden crisp, maintaining a delicate balance of crunch and succulence. Paired with creamy, buttery grits that had just the right hint of smokiness, each bite was a delightful harmony of textures and flavors. The shrimp were plump, juicy, and infused with a rich, savory essence that tied the dish together beautifully. As a side, the bacon was impeccable - thick-cut, crispy, and with an intense smoky flavor that only the finest quality bacon can achieve. It was a perfect counterpoint to the main dish, adding a layer of indulgence to the meal. And then, there were the beignets. Light, airy, and generously dusted with powdered sugar, they transported me straight to the heart of New Orleans. Each beignet was a bite of heaven, with a fluffy interior that melted in the mouth and a slightly crisp exterior. Overall, 1929 Po Boy Kitchen excels in delivering authentic, flavorful Southern cuisine. Each dish is prepared with an evident love for the craft, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience a taste of the South.

Yelp
They gave me the seafood platter but I didn't order that. I ordered the fried shrimp and oyster combo. Well the oysters were horrible and the fries were cold so im assuming they just keep them under a lamp bc the shrimp and catfish were both really hot and fresh. The food took a long time to come out, like so long my husband already finished all his food before mine and he ordered after me from a burger spot. The service isn't that great either, the girl was nice but she got my order wrong. The place is new so maybe they need to work the kinks out but seeing as though they weren't busy you would think all the food would be hot and would come out in a timely manner
google avatar

Tamika D.

Yelp
My first time trying authentic yakamein and it is absolutely delicious! The food came out nice and hot! We didn't have to wait long at all. I got the seafood yakamein and my friend got the oxtail yakamein. The vibe is laid back and the owner is wonderful!
google avatar

Yelp
Staff was attentive and very obliging to answer questions... ultimately went with the Bayou Water and could eat this, three days in a row!

Yelp
First time visit! We will definitely be back and tell as many people as possible. Food was on point- fried green tomatoes and boudin egg rolls for starters(delicious, seasoned to crispy perfection). Had the shrimp, catfish and crawfish poboys. We shared and they all held their own.And Oh, don't sleep on the most and delicious sweet potato bread pudding, The Best! They are open 7 days a week!! zwoods

Yelp
Finally tried 1929 po-boy kitchen and it didn't disappoint! We got here at 11:30am and the oxtail yakamein is already sold out. Next batch won't be available until 2-3pm. We tried beef rib yakamein instead. I'm hoping the sauce is the same and just swapping out the oxtail with ribs. Sooo good and would love to come back and try the oxtail option next time. It's inside the Lagacy food court and parking is the garage is validated otherwise it's really hard to find parking
google avatar

Renaja B.

Yelp
I ordered the catfish platter with beans and rice and potato salad. The catfish was great and well seasoned. The side of beans and rice were really good and had a slight kick. I was pleasantly surprised to find sausage in the beans and rice as most places hold the sausage unless you get the entree portion. I wasn't a huge fan of the potato salad; it could've used more mustard and seasoning for the Cajun taste. Everything came out piping hot and within about 10 minutes. The staff was friendly and provided recommendations as everything looked so good. They have a vast menu so it will take a few trips to try everything. Overall I'll be back to try the ox-tail yakamein (which is their most popular dish) gumbo, a po-boy, boudin egg rolls, and the bread pudding.

Yelp
Horrible service and very long wait. When I requested a refund they refused to provide it. Stated my food was coming out now. Don't waste your time or money.

Yelp
If you want flavorful gumbo and other menu items, please visit this wonderful restaurant! You will not regret it! The gumbo was OUTSTANDING! Never have I ever had gumbo so flavorful and rich! I still think about it! Can't wait to return! This place is truly something special!

Yelp
Excellent food and service! We visited 1929 Po-Boy Kitchen about 3pm today. Parking was easy and when we walked in we were welcomed with a smile. The food came out in less than 10 minutes. We had oxtail yakamein with greens, the shrimp po-boy with fries, and the sweet potato bread pudding. There are no fountain drinks so we had bottles. I tasted the bread pudding first just cause...lol. OMG! The best bread pudding I have ever had! The first bite reminded me of the flavor of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream. AMAZING! I had the oxtail yakamein and the broth was perfect! Just right spice and saltiness. There were 2 large pieces of oxtail in the broth and the meat was delicious, even the fat on the bone! My boyfriend had the shrimp Po-boy and fries. I think the fries are hand cut. They have a really good seasoning on them. But that po-boy...whew! The French bread was just-right crispy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. The shrimp was seasoned and crispy and the sauce and veggies all tied together perfectly! We were VERY pleased with the entire experience at 1929 Po-Boy Kitchen, from the ambience to the service to the food! Before our lunch was over the owner came out and greeted us with a beautiful smile. We had a good laugh about how I was eating and looking at the food lol. We will definitely be back! The tab came up to about $75 and I would pay it again and again! Worth every penny! The ONLY thing I didn't like was the shrimp on the Po-boy were not deveined. I found out about this place from Darius Cooks. The shrimp on his visit were deveined so I was expecting the same. My boyfriend tore it up with the brown strip, I could not! But it was his food not mine. I just tasted and the flavor was ALL there! I really hope this business continues to do well!

Tomesha H.

Yelp
The customer service is always top tier, but the food takes everything to the next level! My absolute favorite is the Yakamein, but everything else is a close second! You have to try it for yoursel

Pam T.

Yelp
Everything that I've ever eaten here has been MAGNIFICENT! Reminds me of home (Opelousas, LA). The owner and staff are very friendly and professional. This is the REAL DEAL when it comes to the ULTIMATE CAJUN COOKING!!

Shatara B.

Yelp
The food is magnificent! The owner welcomed us with excellent customer service!!!! Oh, not to mention her beautiful smile! We're moving to Houston in March and this is a restaurant we're bring our family and friends. Come try it yourself! Love this black owned restaurant!

Yelp
I ordered food online to be delivered. I ordered the catfish po-boy with fries. The fries were burnt & extra crispy & salty. The po-boy was extremely messy & had too much sauce & the bread seemed to be stale & crunchy. My preference is for the bread to be fresh & soft for my po-boy.

Yelp
LOVED!!!! I hope this restaurant continues to do well and grow and stays in Lyric Kitchen or expands because their food is BOMB. Shout out @ericeatshtx because that's how I learned about this restaurant. CUSTOMER SERVICE Very friendly, cashier explained the menu and I loved how she raved about all the food options I asked about. Made me even more eager to try it. PARKING They validate with food purchase so parking was free. Otherwise for the less than one hour I was in Lyric Kitchen it would have been $3. OXTAIL YAKAMEIN I may have misspelled but it's the oxtail with the lo mein noodles. Comes with hard boiled eggs, and some veggies. Very nice healthy serving bowl. Noodles have a slight sweet taste to it and the noodles are not over cooked. I loved this dish. BOUDIN EGG ROLLS Good and crispy. You get three. Be try filling with pork, rice and cheese stuffing inside. FRIED CATFISH PLATE AMAZING catfish. You get two fillets. Well seasoned. Simple yellow cornmeal coating which I love. My sides were the potato salad (they give a heaping amount) served cold with hard boiled eggs and relish throughout. Second side red beans and rice very good and I did the upgrade to get the Tasso link. Worth it! GUMBO with shrimp and crabmeat Also delicious! Very dark and seasoned roux. I added the sauce from the BBQ shrimp plate and it took this gumbo to a different level! Whew! BBQ SHRIMP plate Huge tiger shrimp well seasoned in that NOLA style BBQ sauce. I loved the sauce so much I added it to the gumbo. They used to have homemade drinks but no longer serving. Only bottled soft drinks and some brand name juices if I recall correctly. They even said someone came in from New York just to get their bread pudding if that doesn't let you know how seriously delicious this place is I don't know what to tell you.

Sharon P.

Yelp
Excellent authentic New Orleans cuisine. We enjoyed a fresh made catfish po boy and delicious gumbo. Great place to dine before the ballet or theater in Lyric Market. Food is fresh and made to order so arrive early and enjoy.

Yelp
My oldest daughter and I dropped by to pick up dinner after attending a showing at Hobby Center. I went with the fully dressed catfish poboy and seasoned fries. My daughter went with the Yakamein. My hugh catfish fillet was perfectly fried and not oily. The cornmeal coating on the catfish was not too thick. The skin on fries was also nicely fried and not too oily. My daughter said her Yakamein broth was full of flavor and the oxtail was really tender and meaty. Counter service was friendly and helpful.

Yelp
When I arrived to HTX, the FIRST stop was 1929 Po-boy Kitchen. I seen this restaurant on Tik Tok & couldn't wait to indulge. BAYYYBBBBAAYYY this restaurant did NOT disappoint. When you arrive you'll notice this restaurant among 4+ other restaurants in the building! Waaaaalk pass all them & head straight to 1929 Po-boy kitchen. The server provided suggestions on the menu for us to try. The entire menu was descriptive and mouthwatering! We settled with the shrimp po-boy w/ fries & the gumbo w/ rice, shrimp & crab meat! We found a seat at the bar around the corner & the server brought our food to us. That food was soooo flavorful, fresh, succulent, and delicious! We wanted to order another meal. Mama Mo (the owner) came over and introduced herself, and provided background on her business. She is a very kind and personable woman. She has a great thing going on at 1929 Po- Boys! I HIGHLY recommend you run down to patronize her business! Seafood lovers, and creole cuisine cravers should definitely check it out. Next visit I will taste her noodle bowl with ox tail!!

Yelp
We had a party of 5 who ordered, 4 of the five had good good experience. I had the potato salad and red beans and rice. I did not care for the taste, or should I say the lack of taste. I needed to doctor both of them up. On the other hand, my husband said his po boy was too salty, but he did eat all of it. For other things the food lacked the service was excellent, which is the reason for the 4 star rating. The day we went was a slow day due to it being a holiday, so not so sure if the service would be the same if it was a regular day. I'll have to go back again too make a full assessment...

Yelp
The food here was absolutely incredible. Service was great too. There was a little bit of a wait, but to get good quality and freshly fried fish for the catfish poboy, it's gonna take a little time and it was so worth it! I can't wait to come back. The gumbo was delicious, and they did not skimp on the meat in it. It also wasn't mostly rice, great ratio. I can't say enough good things about this place. Great quality, great price!

Yelp
Friendly and quick service in this new food hall. I ordered a ton of food bc my eyes were bigger than my stomach. No regrets, breading was cornmeal type- my fav. Fries were fantastic and well seasoned. Green gumbo! What a unique spin! It was pretty good, greens were a tad bitter for my taste but I'd try it again. Def give this place a try.

Yelp
My friends and I ended up at Lyric Market to check out one of Houston's newest food halls. We were excited to see what kind of variety they had compared to the other food halls nearby. We made our rounds to see what was available and this spot seemed to be what everyone was ordering. Fun fact, I jokingly said this place was named after the year the po-boy was invented. I guess I lie to my friends alot because they immediately fact checked me and I was totally right. Hope they don't read this review. We came around 6pm on a Sunday and the staff seemed like they had a long day. Customer service seemed very mechanical and forced. We had seven people in our group and as each of us had a chance to order, they kept taking things off the menu. When it was my turn, they were out of almost everything I first wanted including the drinks. I ended up ordering the Magazine Street po-boy which was a shrimp po-boy. You could get it grilled, blackened, or fried. I was hungry so I went with the large, fully dressed. I asked for a side of fries as well. It totaled almost 30 bucks including tip. That seemed a bit high but I thought this was going to be a killer sandwich. You get what you pay for! Well, this wasn't the case here. First off, my large sandwich was the exact same size and my friend's small sandwiches. The po-boy still looked good and the shrimp looked plentiful, and I did not want to wait so I just went with it. I took my first bite and noticed the bread was a bit lifeless. It did not have that nice, crusty, fall apart feel like you would get in New Orleans. On top of that, it was dry and there was hardly any mayo or remoulade on it. I can see why they handed me so many condiments, all of which were typical prepackaged sauces. I ended up just eating the shrimp. They were cornmeal crusted and decently seasoned. Nothing wowed me. We all agreed this was a one and done for us. We would only come back for the Boudin Balls, which we were only able to get one order of. On to the next!

Yelp
Our visit to 1929 Po-Boy Kitchen was amazing! Everything we tried was very good and look just like the pictures on their website. My Favorite was the Ox tail Yak! This dish is the star of the show however and its by far the best Yak I have ever had, its very spicy yet enough sweet to tone it down a little. We even met the owner who is so very appreciative and humble. Please give this place a try and help support this awesome unique restaurant if you are in the downtown area.

Yelp
Popped in for this evening's (solo-dolo) Chris Tucker Legend's Tour stop & boy was it worth the wait! And just as I was catching up on Eater Houston's list of gumbo places, I read this spot's name, the chef asked what I wanted for my side but interrupted himself with an offer of gumbo, & I accepted. Soft shell crab was flavorful & gumbo was on point. Give this spot a try the next time you're downtown

Yelp
The food is amazing I can tell all the items I have tried is authentic Louisiana cuisine Thank You Lord!!! The gumbo is good with the dark, savory, flavorful roux hands down best gumbo I've head since moving to Texas from the boot (Louisiana). The fried seafood was scrumptious as well for me next time I would get it either sautéed or blackened I just can't do everything fried anymore but it was also very much flavorful. The Red Beans oh man when I want red beans but don't want to cook I have found my spot it was delicious. I've also tried that's not pictured the beef yakamein if you haven't tried it please do, that broth OMG amazing I also tried the blackened shrimp poboy and I had the potato salad everything thing that I have tried has been very good. The service when I went wasn't the best the cashier was not very engaging and I felt like she didn't want to be there. I did have to wait because at some point they stopped taking orders to get out orders that had already been placed. The ambiance was family friendly some of the restaurant was playing music which was nice. My complaint was majority of the tables on the poboy 1929 side was dirty really no where to sit. My husband and I actually had to sit at a dirty table with dishes until the bust boy made rounds to clean the tables. Since then I have door dashed this establishment 3 times within a month that's how good the food is. I would definitely recommend this small business restaurant to family, friends and my fellow yelpers.
