Best LGBTQ Bars in Austin | Eater Austin

"A brand-new bar to the scene, 1972 (named after the year Title IX was signed into law) is a lesbian-owned bar that celebrates all things women’s sports. While not technically a gay bar, it markets itself as open to all women’s sports fans — LGBTQ fans included. WNBA games are the queen here, but the bar also shows soccer, lacrosse, and softball games, as well as an open mic every Sunday. The bar hosts frequent sports-themed drink specials, like a specialty cocktail called the Grand Slam, and $1 wing specials. Grab a drink on the expansive covered outdoor patio, or check out a game inside when the Austin weather heats up." - Lane Gillespie

Love love love!!! Growing up as female athletes we dreamed of a place like this! Here it is! The decor and design inside is amazing and inviting! We went to support a fundraiser and fell in love 🥰 We had three screens in front of us. One showing women’s rugby, one showing the longhorns game and one showing longhorns volleyball. I for one, was in heaven. lol Food was great as were the drinks (highly recommended the elote hushpuppies as well as the cinnamon roll bread pudding!) Met Debra who is one of the owners and she was very friendly and a pleasure to talk to! Will definitely be back when softball starts!

Google
A great place with friendly staff and delicious food and drinks. And a fantastic atmosphere for watching sports. We had the wings and loaded fries, both were fantastic.

Google
Had a great time here with my daughter! We really enjoyed the atmosphere and all the memorabilia on the walls… from stadium chairs, to softball league freebies, to roller derby posters. The burger was outstanding… thick and juicy and tasty! Flatbread pizza could use a bit more sauce, but it was good. Fries were excellent. We are looking forward to coming back!

Google
1972 is an exciting, welcoming bar focused on celebrating women's sports. On Guadalupe across from the UT campus, they're a great place to watch a game, get together with your team, or celebrate a victory. They have several bar stools, tables, and booths inside as well as a large shaded back patio with several more tables. The staff are friendly, and they have a pub menu including many beers, several on tap, and several cocktails. There is paid street parking on surrounding blocks, but it is free on Sundays. I look forward to going back soon!

Google
I love this place! The staff/management is so kind and accommodating. Tastey drinks, good apps (all we’ve ever ordered- love the elote hush puppies) and women’s sports. Also special thanks to the manager for always setting us up with the game/fans/cold water outside :’) 🩵

Google
I absolutely love coming here! 💗 It’s a judgment-free zone where you can bring your family and little ones to enjoy women’s sports in a warm, welcoming environment. The wings are amazing, the food is always fresh, and the drinks are fantastic. Prices are very reasonable too. What truly sets this place apart is the family atmosphere. The bartenders go above and beyond to make you feel at home, and it’s clear they care about creating a real sense of community. It’s kid-friendly, and when the owner is there, she takes the time to talk to you—which adds such a personal, caring touch. More than just a place to eat—it feels like family. Some days it’s quiet and relaxed, while other times it’s full of energy with passionate sports fans all coming together. That mix is what makes it special—whether you’re looking to unwind or get into the spirit of the game, you’re surrounded by people who share your love for sports and good vibes.

I finally made my way to 1972 this past weekend and had such an amazing experience watching the UT game! I love all the women's jerseys on the walls. There was plenty of TV's and games going on. I ate their garlic buffalo wings that were very saucy and juicy. I love the large outdoor area as well. Gave a good opportunity for a breather during game day. Most convenient is the parking garage right around the corner making it a non-hassle to park in the area. I also got to meet the owners and they were AMAZING. They checked on us and made sure we were comfortable. Got to chatting with them and it's wonderful to see such a unique place added to the city. My biggest complaint was that this place wasn't around when I was in college 😁. Would have been my go to spot! Will definitely be going back.

Google
Came here to watch a UT women’s volleyball game and LOVED it! Happy hour is every day with good drink and food deals and the atmosphere is perfect. Service was friendly and attentive. Can’t wait to come back here to watch more games!

Yelp
This is an amazing concept of a sports place for all, but honoring and celebrating women in sports. The food is very good, the staff is great, super helpful and friendly. I love the atmosphere and decor of the location. I've visited twice already, and even though I live farther from this place, I highly recommend it for it's wonderful vibe and awesome service. You do have to try the cinnamon bread pudding is so delicious!

Yelp
We decided to pop in on game day before heading to a concert at the amphitheatre. Needless to say, it was chaotic getting to the small parking lot in the back, but that's to be expected. Inside it was really chill and we were seated immediately. We ordered an assortment of things- elote hush puppies, loaded fries, thin onion rings, BBQ chicken flatbread, and shrimp tacos. Whew! Our bellies were bigger than our eyes! I also snagged a pink unicorn which was the only thing I photographed. Thanks, hunger! I was most excited about the hush puppies. They were really good, but I was comparing them to something similar and they didn't meet up to those expectations. In any event, they were delicious with the queso fresco, but the actual hush puppy could have used a little more seasoning in the batter. The shrimp tacos were plentiful and hit the spot. Lots of shrimp and cabbage, but I definitely needed more of the delicious salsa verde! The loaded fries had all the baked potato flavors packed on a French fry. Yum! I didn't try the flatbread or onion rings, but both got rave reviews at the table. The pink unicorn was the highlight for me. NA +sweet+tart. It was so good! It would likely be amusing with a splash of tequila or vodka too. The service was great for the most part. Towards the end, after ordering a round of drinks, our server was MIA as were the drinks. Eventually, they made their way to the table. The ambiance is also fun. They show women's sports, but on game day, they had the game on. Definitely a cool concept with a great staff and solid food.

Yelp
I really want to give this place 5 stars because of how sweet Debra was and how delicious their biscuits and onion rings are but there's a lot of room for improvement. The service was okay, not great. We were there for about 3 hours and instead of being asked "are y'all doing okay?" it felt somewhat (slightly) pushy to ask if I wanted another round or if I wanted to order food. Of course that is one way to "check in" on a patron but it was not methodical. The bathrooms were clean, the barrel of water was clean, and the floors were clean. I enjoyed the decor for how limited the space truly is. The mission of the pub is clear: to host women or female-identifying/non-binary folx in a safe space while showing women's sports. They excel at this mission. We were there for a soccer match but over 20 people were there for a rugby match. SUPER cool stuff. I didn't feel judged as a masculine-presenting person. Now the gritty...the food and beverage prices! Jesus Christ. I don't think I've ever seen onion rings for $11. I don't think I've paid $16 for a salad that had frozen chicken in it. After I was done eating it, both of my friends said they thought the chicken was ham. My friend ordered a pretzel that looked half baked and he didn't eat it. There's a lot to improve on here. Yes, I'll be back. No, I probably won't get anything but the overpriced biscuits and gravy. Cheers to all of the NA drink choices!

Yelp
The vibes were great! Owner was friendly and personable! The bartenders made some great cocktails. My favorite food item were the Elote Hushpuppies, I could eat several alone. Also, the cinnamon bread pudding was so good, not too sweet but just right after your meal to satisfy the sweet tooth.

Yelp
Gosh I don't even know where to start.,, I had such an amazing experience here and these folks are doing something amazing in helping increase the visibility of women's sports in the area. The staff were all super friendly and even played games with my daughter during their downtime. The service was beyond excellent. The atmosphere is very relaxed and I couldn't have been more comfortable. The TV's are quality and always turned to the best in women's sports. The establishment seems to work with local women's sports teams and you could see that represented through the decorations and schwag around the bar. Its good to see a locally owned business reach out and make an impact in the actual community. Now all of the above is more than enough to lock in a solid five star review for any sports bar... but wait there's more.. We went during brunch and had most of the brunch menu. Everything was fantastic. The gravy on the biscuits and gravy was creamy and perfect in every way. The green sauce for the tacos was spicy and delicious. The eggs were cooked perfectly over easy just how I like em. The hashbrowns are true work of art... They fall somewhere between home fries and classic hash browns and its a style I hadn't really had before that I now absolutely love. These may be my favorite hashbrowns in the whole city. The drinks were also great. I had the michelada and I'm not sure what mix they are using but you could definitely taste the celery salt. The bloody mary was also really good and I even tried a sip of my wife's very tasty mimosa. 1972 is a true Austin gem. It's located right on the drag across from UT and I look forward to seeing not only its impact on women's sports in our community but enjoying more of delicious food and drinks! P.S.: Also I read over some of the reviews for the location and I'm pretty sure Chelsy M. and Macey K. are either friends of ex employees or ex employees with a grudge trying to strike out by writing a poor yelp review.. talk about giving the yelp community a bad name .. yep those are the kind of folks doing it.

Yelp
Great place to watch the game and make new friends. I recommend the steak. Good place to meet friends and cheer.

Yelp
I went to a Yelp event at 1972 pub and it was so fun! The food was awesome. My favorite thing is the burger with onion jam and white cheddar! The hush puppies are also really good! I also got to meet the owner and she's super nice!

This is really cool place. Brand new ! Great bartenders. They were definitely busy. The patio out back will be perfecto when there is more shade. Full bar. Nice food options.

Yelp
I'd heard about this bar opening up and finally got a chance to go. Located right near UT, it's a small, cozy, bar with a great vibe. They have a pretty large patio with a couple of games, and of course TVs playing exclusively women's sports! The inside is spacious and there are plenty of TVs so you can watch your game from wherever you are sitting. The food menu is unique! I got the onion rings, and my friend got the loaded fries, both were 10/10. The servers were very friendly and personable, and both our drink and food orders came out super quick! They have a small parking lot behind the patio, there is some street parking, and it is walking distance from the San Antonio garage. Definitely recommend 1972!! Support women!!

Yelp
Women's sports, draught beer, upscale pub food, and tasty snacks. All in a friendly and festive atmosphere. Close parking in the San Antonio garage. Al fresco patio dining. We tried the Mia (spicy mezcal cocktail), the Simone (Don Q Cristal and coconut with lime), the elotes hush puppies with delicious dipping sauce, the 1972 burger with caramelized onion jam, and the steak frites. For dessert we tried the deliciously cinnamony bread pudding. We definitely plan to return when we're in the area of the University of Texas area! Hook 'em lady horns!

Yelp
Hosted our Women's US Open Watch Party for our LPGA Amateur Golf Association Austin Chapter. The food and service were great. Awesome vibe, amazing staff and fun time connecting with our community.

Yelp
Just went for the first time--I'm not a sports fan. But my husband and I met a couple of friends there for a recent drag brunch, and had such a great time. Unlike so many sports bars, it's not dark and dingy but clean and bright and inviting. The obligatory gigantic TV screens are everywhere, including on the surprisingly appealing back patio built into the parking lot, and while they were showing plenty of different sports broadcasts (including professional women's football... Who knew?!), They were silenced for the show. The owner and staff are incredibly personable and welcoming, the drink menu is good and reasonably priced, and the food is terrific, judging by the burgers all four of us ordered and devoured. And the drag was great! Rumor has It they may be doing drag brunch regularly once a month. I probably avoid the place during big sports games, because I hear it's a mecca for sports fans, which I am not. But it's definitely somewhere I'd hang out otherwise. Parking can be a consideration, but we have no trouble finding nearby street parking.

Yelp
I loved going here but unfortunately it seems there has been a big exodus in staff and something that can be great has been ruined due to poor ownership. Its unfortunate I really had high hopes but the quality is just not there.

N D.

Yelp
Such a fun and welcoming place! Barbecue chicken flatbread was good but my favorite was the cinnamon roll bread pudding. It feels just like any other sports bar without the rowdiness/uncleanliness of traditional sports bars. The owner is very nice too!!

Macey K.

Yelp
I thought this place was great at first but it seems like the ownership is a little nutty:( they fired all the nice bartenders and the expensive food/drinks aren't worth another visit

Yelp
Took a road trip to Austin to visit this bar and watch the womens basketball games. Was not disapointed. Good food, good prices, great vibe and spectacular service. Will be coming back!

Tricia M.

Yelp
Great food!!! Yummy drinks!!! Wonderful atmosphere!!! The ladies sports on tv is amazing!!!

Ailsa G.

Yelp
Staff was super helpful and nice. I really enjoyed my food, I got the BBQ chicken flatbread and the cinnamon roll bread pudding. Lots of TVs so you could see the games from any seat. There were a couple issues with the stream for the NSWL match, but I'm sure the technical hitches will be worked out. Overall, it was a very welcoming environment and I was glad to see it was busy for March Madness! I'll definitely be back to catch more soccer games in the future :)

Joseph L.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of checking out 1972 yesterday and it was great! Food and drinks were on point and the employees were seriously so nice. They had only been open for 3 days so a couple of kinks but the staff were great about it and it will get sorted in no time. Btw, the thin cut onion rings were crazy good

Grace K.

Yelp
Such a fun place to watch a game!! Great people and service!! Amazing vibes and drinks. I would recommend the Simone!
