Trendy eatery serving fried chicken & mochi doughnuts amid whimsical, monochrome surrounds.
"2d Restaurant, known for its mochi doughnuts and comic book-style interior design in Lakeview, will soon open at Time Out Market. The menu will feature doughnuts, Vietnamese coffee, ube milk, and more." - Ashok Selvam
"This Lakeview cafe rightly gets plenty of attention for its imaginative hand-drawn decor, but the mochi ring doughnuts are pretty impressive, too. The menu is updated weekly, but the doughnuts are always delicious and sturdy enough to stand up to a dunk in the house phin coffee or a fried chicken sandwich. A second location in the XMarket Food Hall offers vegan doughnuts and boba." - Samantha Nelson, Eater Staff
"Lakeview: 2d, the charming mochi doughnut and cafe in Lakeview, will offer limited-edition doughnuts throughout AAPI Heritage Month." - Ashok Selvam
"The concept of 2d Restaurant is intriguing: A mochi donut and fried chicken spot (with lots of plant-based alternatives) covered in a completely monochrome, Paris-inspired backdrop. Every surface—walls, floor, and furniture, inside and out—is white and outlined in hand-drawn, thin black lines for a flat effect that actually looks pretty cool. Unsurprisingly, the charm of hanging out in a comic book illusion wears off quickly once you post it on social media. And while you might be able to get your fill of photos, the food at this Lakeview cafe is unsatisfying. The donuts are oily and dense, with thick frosting that’s hardened into a shell. The chicken sandwiches are oily too, with a flavorless fried chicken breast that’s drowning in something called “Rooster sauce” (a very drippy, spicy mayo). Plus, the space is cramped, kind of dingy, and you’ll have to wait 25 minutes for a table." - Veda Kilaru
"2d Restaurant, an unusual cafe known for mochi doughnuts and an intricate hand-drawn interior, has a box of “Lucky Six Mochi Donuts” decorated with symbols of strength, prosperity, and renewal to celebrate Lunar New Year. The box features creations like a God of Wealth doughnut with passionfruit guava icing, a winter persimmon doughnut, and a pineapple cream doughnut that symbolizes great fortune. The boxes are available through Thursday, February 29 and more details are available on the restaurant’s website. Other festivities include a traditional red envelope giveaway on Saturday, February 10, when patrons can have a chance to win merchandise or coupons for the cafe." - Naomi Waxman
