5 Rabanitos - Review - Hyde Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This is the Hyde Park location of one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in the city. Expect a similar menu to their Pilsen location with 5 Rabanitos classics like tortas ahogadas, cochinita pibil tacos, and spicy seafood soup. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - John Ringor

5 Rabanitos Mexican debuts in Hyde Park | Eater Chicago

"Ten years after Alfonso Sotelo shook up Chicago’s Mexican restaurant scene by opening a Pilsen spot, the chef brings his passion and expertise to Hyde Park, a neighborhood Sotelo says has never "seen something quite like this." Since opening in late February, the new restaurant has been drawing crowds; on some nights the kitchen sells out completely, forcing Sotelo to close early. "I am happy that the food sells out," he says. "But it is never easy to turn customers away." The restaurant's name — “five little radishes” — nods to Sotelo’s childhood in the farmlands of Guerrero, where he and his four siblings sold radishes in the market. The menu, informed by his Topolobampo and Xoco alum background, is a thoughtful assortment of tacos, tortas, and regional Mexican dishes that includes a generous selection of vegetarian options. Standout dishes described include the puerco al rancho, a nod to Guerrero — slow-roasted pork bathed in a red and smoky mole sauce; the torta ahogada (drowned torta), Sotelo’s version stuffed with carnitas and dipped in a chile de árbol broth; two Hyde Park exclusives — a crispy, beer-battered fish taco and a fried chicken taco, each finished with a chipotle aioli — and a chile relleno with shrimp: a roasted, egg-battered poblano stuffed with gooey, melted cheese in a light, mildly spicy sauce, served alongside shrimp marinated in serrano chile and cilantro (meant to be piled onto warm, freshly made tortillas). Inside, a mural by Mena Arte’s Mario Mena wraps the corner spot in color, depicting Sotelo’s parents, a jaguar representing Guerrero, a hummingbird bridging the living with their ancestors, and a map of Mexico honoring the traditions that shape his cooking. The eatery offers alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from horchata to wine and margaritas; a patio will open in warmer months, street parking is available and there is a parking structure within walking distance. For now, the Hyde Park location isn’t taking reservations. Call ahead." - Brenda Storch

Google
so excited to have good mexican food in hyde park. went in the middle of the afternoon on sunday and the place was packed! 🤯 our server was very friendly & attentive despite it being so busy. i tried the street elotitos, chips y salsa, al pastor taco, carne asada taco, beef barbacoa taco, and flan. everything was pretty decent, but i thought the tacos were amazing. super flavorful and delicious. would probably skip the apps next time and just order more tacos

First time trying this place. Nice addition to Hyde Park. There are many options to choose from including vegetarian friendly options. Plan to come back. If you're in the area, definitely check them out.

For appetizers tuna ceviche and guacamole/chips great. We also had a variety of tacos for our dinner and they were excellent as well. We got there just before the busy dinner time on a Saturday evening. The staff are very attentive and polite

Had the greatest time here with my boyfriend. We both agreed that this is easily the best Mexican restaurant in Hyde Park. We got an appetizer, entrees, dessert, and drinks, and all were delicious. Despite being totally packed, we got three courses in under 90 minutes. Also, the best tortillas I’ve ever had!

Excellent addition to the Hyde Park restaurant scene! The original 5 Rabanitos is in Pilsen and this one has all the positives of that location! Their Cochinita Pibil is the best this side of the Yucutan Peninsula, their torta de Barbacoa was excellent, and their Mexican street corn was delicious! Best Mexican restaurant in Chicago!

It’s so important to have good service, no matter what the customer looks like, or the number of people, treat everyone as a valued customer. I didn’t receive that coming here, which seemed much like a choice given by the staff as I observed other guests experiencing the restaurant in a different way. Seated myself, waited quite some time to order, ended up ordering to go since the wait was long with only just few customers eating there. Got my food and no words were exchanged, in contrast some customers were chatted with outside the door with staff. I was quite surprised by this experience overall honestly, given being a long time resident of Hyde park and giving this new restaurant a chance. Last but not least, I ordered the vegetarian torta, and it was pretty bland in flavor, it felt as if I was eating greasy filled vegetables between bread. It was pretty disappointing overall, safe to say I won’t be coming back in the future. Best of luck to this Mexican based restaurant.

First time at the restaurant. I love enchiladas and the only choice was chicken enchiladas mole. I’m not a big fan but I tried them any. The sauce was sweet and spicy. They were served with rice and a small salad/slaw. I ordered the beans (black) on the side at an extra cost. Our server came right away to take our order. We never saw him again until I flagged him down. Atmosphere was nice and the staff were pleasant, but this was a one and done for me.

Yelp
Hyde Park wasn't known for great Mexican food--until 5 Rabanitos arrived! This spot brings the same high-quality flavors as their original Pilsen location. Their Cochinita Pibil and Al Pastor tacos are standouts, packed with rich, authentic flavors that makes this taqueria known for. Expect significant waits on Friday and weekend evenings, as it gets busy--but it's worth it!

Yelp
The west end of Hyde Park really needed a Mexican restaurant, so I am glad it's here. It was very busy when I went so I think they will do well. The service was hectic, most of the servers seemed frazzled but it was apparent they were doing their best. My food was hit and miss; the salsa and chips were excellent and flavorful. The tacos were excellent. The caldo was flavorless and bland but had lots of vegetables; they have a vegetarian menu with some cool options and that is great. I will go again and pick some different things but overall I am really glad this place is here. Try it!
