NYC’s New Restaurant Openings - New York - The Infatuation

"56709 replaces the Canto pop-themed bar 929 in Long Island City. It’s run by the same people (who also run snack bar Gulp, which is in front of the bar), but switches up the source of inspiration to Japanese City Pop. You can listen to retro music, drink cocktails, plum wine, or a grapefruit soda spritz, and snack on fried oysters." - will hartman, willa moore, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah, bryan kim

NYC New Restaurant Openings, June 2025 | Eater NY

"A speakeasy-style cocktail bar tucked inside a Taiwanese street food concept that was formerly called 929, reimagined with a 1980s Japanese theme." - Emma Orlow

Hidden inside of Gulp, this speakeasy is the sister/renovated version of 929—a Canto/Mando pop themed speakeasy. 56709 is J-pop themed and is a casual, chill vibe inside. They offer a variety of amazing drinks as well as some food options (from Gulp). I got their Ringo and Pika Pika and thoroughly enjoyed both of then. They were both sweet and refreshing. My friend got both of their specials for that night and also enjoyed them. My current favorite bar in LIC and I would highly recommend.

Google
Visited this bar without realizing it was like a speakeasy so finding the entrance took longer than expected. This bar lived up to their description - putting heavy emphasis on the Japanese city pop ambience. The overall energy of the space was lively. The drinks were uniquely themed, but I can’t say they were the most well made cocktails. The one that I tried, Seiko, lacked depth. Their food was delicious. The portions are small, but that’s expected given the significantly below average price.

My friends and I had a wonderful experience here! The staff were helpful when adding a guest to my reservation and throughout the night. The drinks not only were they beautiful but also tasty! The ambiance here is wonderful and aesthetically pleasing. Would 100% recommend visiting. I for sure will be returning soon!

This place is awesome! If you are into cocktails that are on the bitter or sweet side, or even something a little sour, you are going to absolutely love what they have going on here. But honestly, even if that is not your thing, the bartenders are also incredibly talented, so you are guaranteed to get an amazing drink, even if you order a classic. You really can't go wrong.

Google
Amazing new bar by the same great people that brought you the beloved 929. The ambiance has a very cool immersive Japanese city pop theme. The drinks are creative and tasty, ranging from quite light all the way to boozy. Bartender (Jason) was very skilled and attentive, with a great focus on detail. LIC’s hidden gem!

Google
Such a good vibe for happy hour drinks~~ They also have a food and drink combo with the popular Taiwanese restaurant Gulp next door; it’s such a good deal! The “Let’s Kiss the Sun” cocktail is amazing and Cooper was a great bartender!!

Google
Beautiful speakeasy, nice vibe with asian-anime inspired menu. They also have happy hour from 6-8pm with discounted drinks and food.

Google
This bar is amazing, the ambiance was great and the drinks were delicious. I got the Momoko and it was so refreshing yet complex, I ordered it twice. One of my favorite drinks I’ve had in the city. The bartenders were super helpful and kind. No food this time but I hope to be back!

Yelp
I'm typically not a big Espresso Martini fan, but the Kaoru felt like it had a good amount of alcohol -- despite too much foam -- without tasting like it had a lot of alcohol. It was creamy and smooth with the perfect hojicha flavor. 56709 was a small and intimate cocktail bar, and we got the perfect amount of service. A table for 2 was available for walk-in on a Friday night.

Yelp
Everything was amazing as always! Came when this place was originally 929 and needed to come see what the vibes were for 56709 :)) The place itself is small but cozy, I've gone when it's busy busy and still felt comfortable and was able to easily have conversations. Service is always wonderful, they're very attentive and know the menu well. I always go for their recommendations and never get disappointed. All the drinks we tried were super yummy especially the Momoko and the Pika Pika 10/10

Yelp
A Japan-pop themed speakeasy located inside Gulp. Loved the fun lighting in here but the drinks really are the star! I got the matcha, red bean, and lychee cocktail which was one of the best cocktails I've had. It was incredibly smooth and easy to drink, and the matcha foam was perfectly sweet and flavorful. There's a 1-drink minimum per person which is very easy to hit.

Yelp
We got incredibly lucky to snag a table at 56709 thanks to a sudden rain shower--otherwise, you definitely need a reservation for this spot. This speakeasy-style bar is such a fun surprise, blending a Japanese pop aesthetic with delicious Taiwanese comfort food. We tried three cocktails--Windy Lady, Let's Kiss The Sun, and My Sugar Babe--and every single one was exceptional. Perfectly balanced, creative, and just downright delicious. For food, we ordered the Braised Pork Over Rice with a side of Pickled Cucumber, and both were fantastic. Cozy, flavorful, and exactly what you want to pair with great drinks. A special shoutout to Paolo, who was incredibly attentive and took wonderful care of us throughout the night. This place is an absolute must-visit. I can't wait to come back--and next time, I'll make sure to reserve!

Yelp
This is a very cute place. It's small, but cozy and Japanese inspired. That said, I didn't have the best time with the drinks. I got the Epo which consisted of a red bean whip on top of pisco. The textures were strange. Because of the red bean, the whip was grainy and extremely heavy, so it sunk into my drink overtime. I also did not think the flavors went together. My friend also did not like his drink.

Yelp
A fun, cute Japanese city-pop themed cocktail bar in place of what was previously the canto/mando-pop themed 929. I was sad when 929 relocated from LIC to Manhattan, but this new bar from the same 929 team does not disappoint! With a new colorful, neon aesthetic and a whole new drink menu inspired by J-pop and anime, 56709 delivers a fresh concept while maintaining the same quality of service as 929. While the drink menu is brand new, their food menu has remained largely unchanged, as it offers many of the same items sourced from the Gulp kitchen out front that were also offered by 929. Overall, 56709 is definitely one of my favorite bars in the LIC neighborhood!

Yelp
Super cute, Japanese 80's Pop-inspired speakeasy tucked away behind GULP. Servers are attentive and nice. The drinks are creative and unique. While they're on the pricy end ($20 per drink), they use Asian flavors and ingredients rarely found at other bars, like black sesame syrup, persimmon, red bean, and matcha, so it feels very much worth the experience!

Yelp
Not too different from what it was previously (929), but still quality, unique Asian inspired cocktails + amazing vibes. Loved sitting at the bar to see the drinks get made and interacting with the bartenders! It is a bit loud in the seating area so it might be a little hard to hear. Minimum one drink per person required!

Yelp
Tried the Pika Pika, Sailor Moon and Epo. I love fruity, sweet drinks and the pika pika tasted like lychee juice, delicious! The Sailor Moon was gin based, superrr smooth and strong. The Epo was very creative, pisco with red bean and matcha! sweet, light and strong. 90min reservation, minimum one drink per person, great vibes. Located behind Gulp!

Yelp
Speakeasy located behind Gulp. Very appealing list of cocktails. I opted for one called the Seiko, a daiquiri inspired cocktail with rum, genmaicha, honey dew, and lemon. It was fruity without being overly sweet. Super tasty drink that I finished in no time Limited food menu. We shared the fried platter which included salt & pepper chicken, cuttle fish, tofu, and asparagus. The best item we ate during our mini bar and dinner crawl for the evening. Chicken was aggressively seasoned and quite addicting. Fish provided more of a moist and plumpy bite. Asparagus was correctly trimmed and lightly fried offering a vegetal balance to the other items. The bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable. They were excited to chat about the drinks and explain any items. Quite a bit of showmanship too while they crafted the cocktails. It's fun, dim, and intimate atmosphere offering a nice experience for a date or a night out with a small group.

Yelp
Been wanting to try the original 929 but decided to come try the new speakeasy. The food is still centered around taiwanese food as the speakeasy is in the back of a taiwanese resturant front. It was still hard to get a reservation unless you can go early which we did. The seating time is 90 minutes with a drink per person minimum. We tried the plum sweet potato fries, the popcorn chicken, and lu rou rice bowl. Everything was great. I think the plum sweet potatoes fries were a bit too much with the seasoning. Every a few bites, it was hard to eat by itself. The drinks are all very creative, named after different anime characters. Overall, a great experience

Yelp
Service: 4.5/5 Food: 4.2/5 Price: $$$ ($30-50) It's the rebranded 929 + honestly, the vibes haven't changed much. Just small swaps to the decor + music choices. Revamped menu has a cooler concept, bc you can order your go to cocktail with their added twist. As per usual with speakeasies, it's hella dark in here. Unlike other speakeasies, it's actually quite loud, so not the best for long catch ups + serious talks. What I Ordered: - Akina: only the rim is spicy, not too strong - Momoko: a little decadent, mostly sweet - Epo: top layer is a chocolatey cream foam, bottom layer is strong - Anri: spiked citrusy soda - Junko: strong - Arale: strong, looks pretty

Yelp
4.5- but here is why I am missing half the star I really miss the old HK inspired bar. This one is fine but really missed the HK inspired cocktails and theme. I do think the drinks are good, one tasted like Taiwanese winter melon tea,m and my shiso drink actually tasted like shiso! Drinks were on the sweeter side but one can see that the bartenders really took their time to make it perfect. From scaling every ingredient to the details for presentation, it is indeed a good quality cocktail bar.

Yelp
Was excited to try the spiritual successor to 929 LIC. Came on a weekday a little after they opened and were seated immediately for a table of 4 without a reservation, so that was nice. It's a 90min time limit for a party of 4 and a one drink minimum per person. Space remains mostly unchanged for those who've been to 929 before. Mostly just aesthetic changes to the posters on the wall and obviously the music switched over to Japanese pop. The music itself was fine, but I wouldn't really consider it a listening bar. At least the quality of music wasn't super amazing. The staff had to keep going back and forth to adjust the volume for some tracks that were playing way louder than others. As for food and drinks, in all we ordered 5 drinks + mala fries: - Usagi (sailor moon inspired): Probably the most spirit forward of the drinks we had for the night. - Pika Pika: This was supposed to have tomato and cheese in it, but overwhelming flavor was mango. Definitely on the sweeter side. - EPO: Creamy, kinda tasted like a Bailey's drink. - Momoko: Very sweet on the peach/sherry. - Mariya: A bit more spirit forward at first sip, but a very sour after taste. Almost like a tamarind sour? - Mala fries: Nice and crispy. Not particularly heavy on the ma or the la, but it was seasoned enough to be tasty with a small dab of mayo on the same. I found for $20/cocktail and $16 for the fries to be wildly overpriced for the quality of the drinks we got and portion of the fries. Also we all agreed the drinks were pretty weak. I usually feel something after just one drink on an empty stomach, but I walked out of here feeling absolutely nothing (and not in the I'm drunk way). But what really pushed down this review for me was just how inattentive the wait staff was. I don't mind being passed by a couple times, but after the third and fourth time where I literally had my hand up in front of a waiter while he was chatting up the people next to us (who was either his friends or he was hitting on them), we just decided to get the check instead of order another round. Was kind of dumbfounded to be honest as were the other people in my group who saw me trying to flag our waiter down. Overall, drinks were OK, but given the price and pretty mediocre service, I personally would have a hard time wanting to come back here and recommending it to others.

Yelp
I would say this is a copy and paste of their previous establishment. The only difference is Japanese posters and decor versus the Hong Kong style. I did appreciate the new drink menu! Got a couple things to try and thought they were delicious. I'll have to say, last time and this time, their theming is on point.

Yelp
THIS is my favorite bar in NYC. I waited years for city pop to embed itself in NYC hard enough for a bar to pop up and this place was the answer to my un-verbaliEd plea to the heavens. It used to be the canto/mando-pop bar 929 which I also loved and I think it's just a new theme, same owners. There's something about the ambiance which invites conversation, even if it's not intensely themed like some other bars - it gives more living room in a friends house with records on the wall thad are on theme more than it gives "city pop runs in our blood". That being said, their themed napkins have me trying to take one home as memorabilia every time I go. The bartenders are fascinating to watch - they are very skilled in their craft and can do that thing where they pour liquids from a container into a cup with like feet in between (I'm sure there's a name for this skill but I'm too amateur to know). I have to say, the Junko was way to strong for me, but what was I thinking getting something inspired by an old fashioned when I am a weak lightweight? Next time I'm 100% trying the Pika.

Yelp
Drinks here are unique and excellent. From carbonation, to foams, to Asian inspired flavors. This bar has it all. The glassware is also pretty cool, and the drinks came out reasonably fast. The main knock I have is that the service was very bad for me. I had to get up every time I wanted to place an order, or ask for the check etc. At times I felt that I was staring at the waitress for a few minutes and she kinda looked back but also didn't and ended up just going about some other stuff. Idk. Took me around 20 min to get in my first order. In addition, the seating is not the most comfortable. The legs of the tables make it very awkward to sit and put your feet.

Yelp
Newly opened sister bar and in the same space as what was 929 in LIC. Made a reservation for 3 on a Tuesday and was seated promptly. Happily stumbled upon their first day of happy hour menu. We ordered everything on the happy menu, the braised pork over rice, and a round 2 of drinks. Out of all the drinks we ordered, I liked the Let's kiss the sun on the happy hour menu and Junko the most. All the food was also good but small in size but the cold appetizer was my favorite. All in all, everything was good and I would come back again to try more drinks.

Yelp
Couldn't have been more delightful! Make a reservation ahead of time and enter through the back of Gulp. The ambience is impeccable, from the vintage lighting to the vibe-y city pop records and intimate setting. Fantastic service--so friendly and prompt. You can order appetizers provided by Gulp (fried oysters were a wow!). Drinks are delicious and inspired by city pop artists or anime characters. My fave was the Usagi, a Sailor Moon-themed drink that tasted amazing and made by the bartender using anti-gravity flare.

Yelp
Really fun hidden speakeasy! We went with friends and had a lot of fun. The electric interiors make the place intriguing and cool to experience. The drinks are good.

Yelp
Cool vibe and good interesting drinks. Entrance to get here is neat and service is great.
