A Man Full of Trouble

Beautiful farmhouse beers in a historic building (Philly’s oldest surviving tavern). Great natural light, comfortable seating + a small outdoor space, and one of the coziest settings for a drink in the city! Such a nice change of pace from some of the more cold, sterile taprooms opening these days. FYI: There are some snacks and guest food options on occasion, but probably best to grab a bite elsewhere. A few non-beer and non-alc drinks are available as well. Very family-friendly during the day. If you’re a history buff, be sure to check the hours for the upstairs museum!

What a beautiful little place - a touch off the beaten track but all the cosier for it. Lovely beers, a relaxing atmosphere in a historic building, and with favourite Dylan playing in the background and Scrabble to hand to while away the time. Didn't eat any food so have left that element blank

One chilly Thursday night in Philadelphia while on a business trip, at about 8:45 PM 8 colleagues and I walked a 1/2 mile to A Man Full or Trouble Tavern for a drink. Upon reaching the tavern, the door was locked and we were sad. We knocked on the door and wondered where to go instead. In a few moments Ben opened the door and invited us in. He poured us drinks and gave samples when requested. He shared tavern stories and the history of the building. We played colonial era music on the Bluetooth speaker and had a grand time. Gemini was the crowd favorite brew. Huzzah! A Man Full of Trouble Tavern is a gem and has quite the claim to fame as the oldest pre-revolutionary era tavern in Philadelphia (1759). The Succession Fermentory offerings are good local brews, Ben is a great barkeep, and we had a fantastic time. So worth the 1/2 mile walk there and back in 30 degree weather. Huzzah!

We came in on a Monday night. We were the only patrons in the bar when we arrived. The person working was far more interested in playing a game on his phone than providing any service. His demeanor was unpleasant and bordered on hostile when we asked a couple of questions about the history of the building and process of reopening the space. One other couple came in for a drink and left within a couple of minutes of ordering their drinks. The vibes were off. We will not be returning.

Only purchased a few drinks here so I can’t rate the food. I stumbled on this little bar and microbrewery walking back from the tiny bookstore I visited. The co-owner was behind the bar and he was really kind and hospitable. Their beers were delicious. I actually thought it was a coffee shop and was stopping for a late afternoon espresso and I was pleasantly surprised. Cheers!!!

Really cool place to grab a drink. It's a pretty small place which makes sense due to how old it is, but if there's a seat open its definitely worth stopping in. I did not try the food but I believe they do sell sandwiches/hoagies. I also highly recommend you check out the museum in the upstairs portion, just be careful as the steps are a bit of a death trap (maybe check it out before you have your beverage).

Great little place, if you want a glass of wine or whiskey. No TV or sports banners, just a cool little spot !!

If you're a craft beer nerd, you need to try this! Succession brewery is now inside this tiny old historic pub. I love sour beers and they had a delicious handful of barrel aged sours, wild ales, and saisons. I even bought 2 bottles to go. Their beer is just fantastic. And the owner talked to us for a little bit, he's awesome! I'll be back for sure! FYI it gets loud in there if the doors & windows are shut for air conditioning. Also I'm told there's a small museum upstairs but it's only open a few hours a day so try to visit it if you can!

One of my friends has been exceptionally hyped about A Man Full of Trouble's recent opening in Society Hill. It's a small space that focuses on sour beers from Succession Fermentary. I tried their berliner weisse during my quick visit and enjoyed it quite a bit. It was nice and refreshing. Their tap list is small and they have 25 seats to accommodate guests; that includes mini stools along the windows. The building is historic and that adds an extra layer of charm to the experience. I hear they do tours sometimes. You can also order a hoagie from another local restaurant if you're hungry, which is a nice feature.

Very small and friendly establishment! The menu was small, but had multiple seasonal selections of saison that sounded wonderful - the employee even let me try one before I made my choice (a smoky peach saison that was just too smoky for me). I loved the apple saison though! I would have never known of this spot if my friend hadn't been so excited that it just reopened after being closed for years, and I probably would have missed it walking down the street - the sidewalk board sign did help point us to the door though! We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon - it's essentially a tiny one room taproom on the ground floor of a historic building. We were lucky to grab a table right in the center, perfect to admire the quaint tile on the old fireplaces and look out the windows facing the street of old city as we enjoyed our beers. Cheers!

While this venue is beautifully restored to exacting historical standards, the quality of the beer and variety is not great. Food offerings are limited to potato chips. This could potentially be a terrific resource for neighbors in Society Hill; hopefully the owner will make improvements to the quality of drinks and add a restaurant.

Beautiful building and vibe. The door gave us trouble but a kind stranger helped us open it. Fascinating beer styles. The casked smoked peach tastes like a cocktail. The spruce ipa was great. Got a bottle of the fera amica. Like kvas. And a hoagie. Amazing stuff.
