It has been almost four years to the day I last stepped foot in Abbot's Pizza
and today I was with two friends of which one urged we go.
The one friend was a big fan while the other was ambivalent, and I was well, why not?
The one friend had a slice of mushroom and a slice of salad on top and she enjoyed it immensely. Two of us split a pie with three toppings: mushroom, pepperoni and anchovies.
I'm originally from New York and kind of take pizza seriously and I'm amazed by the lack of quality pizza venues, especially here in Venice.
My visit reminds me of the movie "Pulp Fiction," where the character Vincent Vega was intrigued by the notion of a $5 milk shake. Now that movie is over thirty years old, but value & price are always on the mind of the consumer, no matter what the purchase.
Having said that, a pizza with three toppings costing I believe was over $40 dollars was excessive, and unreasonable. But I was relieved that anchovies were available.
Nevertheless, the pie was fine enough and better then my previous visit.
This place has a following and a popularity with locals, as for a Monday evening, it was busy and the photos of Gehrig, Berra, Robinson, Paige, Aaron, Clemente, Hodges, et al still graced the walls, but a little starched from the hot sun.
The cashier/server was very nice and took our order and the wait for the pie was about 10-15 minutes as we ate inside.
Overall, the place is clean and the competition non-existent as choices for pizza are far and few between and I rarely eat pizza in California except for Tony P's in the Marina and Sampas on Washington Blvd.
I'm always open to pizza recommendations and when in Venice and on AK, Abbot's could be a stop you might want to consider.
