A Wine Novice’s Weekend Guide to the Walla Walla Valley - Eater Seattle

"Mike Easton is now executive chef at the Kitchen at Abeja, and if he weren’t reason enough to visit this dreamy winery (he is), the serene storybook surroundings would be. It is just so profoundly beautiful here. With a list of easy-drinking wines and hyper-seasonal dishes, Abeja pulls out all the stops for the luxe dining and tasting experiences, and guests who feel like splurging can stay at the plush inn, comprising five outbuildings (including a former carriage house)." - Meg van Huygen

Stunning winery, vineyard, and inn that truly highlights the best of Walla Walla. We stayed here for a night and did a full wine tour while there. Accommodations were excellent, food was very good, and the tour + tasting was wonderful. Our guide Jake was friendly, knowledgeable, and really took time to make sure we enjoyed ourselves and got to experience the property. Can’t say enough good things, and definitely worth a visit (and a stay) if you have the time!

We came to Abeja for a wedding and had a great time. Very beautiful setting! Wine was good too. The bee theme is very cute.

We stayed in the Carriage House and were able to partake in the UNBELIEVABLY AMAZING five-coursed dinner on Thursday night. The location and setting of The Inn in and of itself is superb and the stay includes a lovely breakfast and wine tasting, but the added dinner option (added price, but well worth it) capped our stay. We even were allowed to bring our dog who couldn't have been happier with the grounds when we took him on walks. A truly remarkable property with world-class wine quality, culinary talent and accommodations. Highly, highly, highly recommend.

My wife and I have been to Walla Walla quite a few times before. We have stayed in a variety of places. Abeja is certainly very nice, conveniently located, and peaceful. We stayed in the Edison “cabin.” It is spacious and very cozy with amenities for either hot or cold weather stays. The staff were very pleasant and inviting, making it very clear that should we need anything they would be able to assist. We did a tasting. I found the Chardonnay an interesting take on a distinctively different approach and bought a bottle. I really liked their 2014 Cabernet offering as well. I bought a bottle of the 2017 beekeeper blend. It has a little more merlot in it and is ready to drink, where the newest offering was a little tannic at the moment. Breakfasts were really exceptional with very appropriate portions for an average appetite. We also had the charcuterie tray ( I would recommend this ) and a lunch that they were very willing to wrap and put in our refrigerator for when we returned. The grounds are great with a great backstory. I do wish that there was more walking paths available. There’s a really pretty bridge on the backside but a very strongly worded sign saying Abeja guests keep out. That’s a little sad because it would be nice to walk down the gravel road. I doubt the average Abeja guest is looking to go inside those people’s homes or even interrupt their space; it smacks of a small minded neighbor dispute. It’s too bad really. It is pricey and not necessarily something we would do every time we go there, but worth it at least once.

Wine is really good, in our opinion. Please is beautiful. The food is not the best. They will serve you everything in the list: 5A grade american wagyu steak, truffle sauce, salmon, paté, we are only missing caviar lol... however, our favorite bite was the heirloom tomato soup, absolutely superb. I'm giving them 4 because of the gazpacho and the grape ice cream. Oh my God, I would go back only for this, delicious. Everything else is not the most of fresh things, lots of salt. We prefer seasonal, local, and fresh things. Overall, it was a beautiful experience ✨️

This was quiet serene and gorgeous. Everyone was very welcoming and knowledgeable. Wine tasting and snack board paired well together.

We stayed onsite at the Farmhouse (amazing!). It was so relaxing spending an evening sitting on the porch drinking a glass of wine. The staff is so welcoming and friendly. The breakfast that came with our stay was delicious! The innkeeper, Sierra, is phenomenal! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

We just went to the tasting room and the guy working at the Marcus Whitman Hotel said sorry... we're closing. He gave us no reason why and we all came down here for them. People from out of town, too. We are locals and super disgusted.

Yelp
From the time we got there until the time we left, this was a wonderful experience. They met us at our car and escorted us to our table. When we got there they had printed our party name on all the tasting sheets, the table was beautifully set, and it was all so personalized. We were sat at a beautiful table on the garden, and aside from being bother by a couple bees and a couple leaves falling in our glasses, it was near perfect. Alex was the one who helped us and he was fun, friendly, and made the whole experience. He was knowledgeable about the property, the wine, and just had a great time with us. The wine was also delightful. Like I said, it was wonderful and a great experience. I think that's exactly what you want when you wine taste. You're not just there for the wine, you're there for the experience.

Yelp
Fantastic, Amazing, Beautiful to start. We called on our way from Napa and were able to get a reservation in the Farmhouse. WOW had no idea something like this existed, let alone in Walla Walla. This was our first time in Walla Walla so this introduction was something we couldn't imagine. The house is something better than you'll ever see on TV. The grounds are beautiful and perfectly manicured. The staff is fabulous and so nice. Their 2015 red was delicious and something we ended up bringing home, more than one bottle. Can't talk highly enough about Abeja and their reputation throughout the town was second to none. Thank you so much for the experience.

Yelp
We had a tasting absolutely loved the staff and the wine. What a fantastic place. Did you know they have a five course wine pairing dinner Thursday through Sunday!!! We had the best dinner and will for sure book in the summertime.

Yelp
It's been one week since our EPIC experience at this exceptional winery. I have been thinking...How do I articulate the best wine tasting (to date) as I have sampled my share over the decades. I thought maybe I should create my own vocabulary to do it justice because that is really what it takes when you have this amazing experience that leaves you speechless. Long story short...Some VIP friends came to Walla Walla for the first time. Of course, I wanted to show them just how unique this small town is here in rural Eastern Washington. Fortunately, I was able to book the small plate tasting tour at Abeja. The stars were perfectly aligned and we were appointed "Jake" ...I would like to refer to him as Jake-the-magnificent because that best describes him. We toured the grounds receiving an interesting historical background of the Estate while sipping Viognier. (Oh and BTW, Jake also doubles as a photographer if you want to capture the memory on your smart phone). The highlight was when he opened the thousand pound door to welcome us to our private tasting room accompanied by small plate deliciousness. Jake-the-magnificent, "hit it out of the park" with his engaging personality, wit and knowledge of the wines. It was outstanding from start to finish. So grateful for a beautiful memory.

Yelp
My best friend had her wedding here and it was gorgeous! The staff was so friendly and helpful, food was delicious, and accommodations were rustic but sophisticated. We stayed in the Farmhouse and it was amazing. The shared kitchen is spacious and puts HGTV goals to shame! If you opt for the shared space, 1000% splurge on the Palouse Room; it's much more private being the only one on the first floor and has a spacious bathroom with tub and separate shower. We didn't want to leave! The food was so pleasantly surprising. Best avo toast I've ever had! They had this little pudding thing one morning and it was so good. Everyone at the table was wanting seconds. They can also easily accommodate vegan/vegetarian requests with advanced notice. Unfortunately we didn't get to do the official wine tasting experience but Abeja wines are phenomenal- I can't wait to go back to do the tasting! I'm eyeing to stay in a cottage this time :)

Yelp
One of our favorites. The wine was excellent and the atmosphere was first class all the way. This was not only a vineyard/tasting room they also has many different lodging options. It was beautiful and could accommodate larger parties and couples. The ground were absolutely beautiful and would be a great place to go/stay for a special occasion. Our server had just finished enology school and was very knowledgeable. I wish I could remember her name because I would highly recommend her.

Yelp
Wonderful staff! Julie is amazing along with so many others! Did a tasting here this winter and had an amazing ' experience and was treated with such kindness and professionalism. Recommend to anyone and everyone. I do say I do say the spring is the best time to visit. Beautiful grounds and property..

Yelp
We were excited to come back to Abeja on our first trip to Spring Release after the pandemic. It was such a disappointment. Maybe it was because we came late in the day, but there was little enthusiasm. The people were wonderful and interesting, but anxious for the day to end. Only three wines were tasting for our $20 fee, and there was no ask, so we didn't buy. It's become an investment opportunity and has lost its heart.

Yelp
Such an amazing space and cannot wait to return when the restaurant opens. The staff is warm and friendly and the wines were delicious. Thanks for a great tasting and look forward to seeing you again!

Yelp
Highly recommend for wine tasting / buying, tours, or stays at the inn. They make fantastic Spanish style old world wines. There were 5 wines on their tasting flight with options to "revisit" afterwards. Everything was fantastic and we took home the 2018 Viognier ($44) and their 2020 Beekeeper's Red ($34). The grounds were stunning and made everyone in our group want to come back again.

Yelp
I've done a lot of tastings in many different regions, and the one we had at Abeja was one of the best. As soon as we parked, we noticed the somm walking out to us with a glass of wine. We started our tasting right there in the parking lot with a welcome glass of chardonnay. Our somm, Will, gave us a quick tour of the property and then led us into the tasting room, where a fire was a roaring and our personalized wine list was waiting for us at the table in front of it. Most wineries say to allow an hour for a tasting, but it rarely holds true. In this case, at Abeja, we had such a great chat with Will that we ran a bit over an hour! He had an answer for every question we threw at him, from the origins of their art to the science behind the "funk" of the Rocks District. We've heard a lot about wine over the years, but Will still taught us new things on our visit. He was also a huge help in taking photos for us and making our visit extra special. And in one of the true tests of a great somm, when we asked him about other places to try in town, his recommendations were all great. Oh, and the wine. Yes, that's a bit important, right? We didn't have a bad bottle here, would have been happy to buy any of them, and almost joined the club. My favorite taste was probably the merlot. We're excited to come back to Abeja again, hopefully to stay in the inn. What a great visit!

Yelp
Hands down my favorite tasting spot out of our entire trip! It was our first time and we were blown away. From the greeting with a glass of wine upon arrival to the tasting experience at our outside table. Shannon was absolutely incredible! She went over everything in such great detail, made us laugh, and made check out super easy. The grounds were also a show stopper. Paired with their incredible wines it was almost impossible to leave. We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
An incredible experience all around from wine tasting to the accommodations. Beautiful estate with a room that was truly memorable. Attention to detail was beyond great. And the breakfast was one of the best I've ever had. This is a unique place that's comparable to a stay at a French estate, but with an American wine country informality. . Lastly every employee went out of there way to please. I have traveled around the world and this ranks among the best experience.

Yelp
This is why you come to Walla Walla: to get away from it all. The inn and winery sit at the base of the hills, surrounded by vineyards and simple beauty. The grounds are well-groomed yet inviting. You may lose your shoes at some point. There's a very charming cat who wanders the ground soliciting chin scratches in exchange for some positive chi. The wine is just what you would expect from the feel of The Abeja inn: elegant, sophisticated, approachable and perfectly true to variety. I'll let you discover all the nuances of the wines on your own. That's most of the fun of drinking wines of this caliber. HINT: Tasting is by appointment only so call ahead.

Yelp
Wow! We lucked out finding this place. The property is amazing! We loved their wine too!

Yelp
Very much enjoyed our tasting here. The service was exceptional and the wines were great. We are looking forward to opening one of the Cabernet Sauvignon with our friends.

Rich C.

Yelp
This place has completely lost its uniqueness . Wine is OVERRATED . Service is uninteresting , stale and commercial. Owner is arrogant and non involved . The winery's best days are in the past . Drive down the road to Aluve and skip this winery !

Yelp
After being on the mailing list for 3 years and missing one spring release - we were turned away from the tasting at Abeja this weekend. It's not enough that we buy their wine year round in Seattle; we are required to show-up once a year in Walla Walla to prove we're worthy. After this year, we won't be going to the tasting room or buying it elsewhere - too many other great wineries in the area to keep this one on any list.

Yelp
Abeja is my favorite winery in Washington and makes my all-time top 5 list. Their Chardonnay, Cab, Syrah, and Beekeepers Blend are AMAZING and different from any other wine I have ever tasted. The reserve Cab which only comes out on extremely good vintages is like silk. Probably one of the best wines I have every had. It has beautiful structure and the most incredible nose. Wow, my mouth is watering just thinking about it... unfortunately the bottles I have are socked away to age for another 5 years : (

Yelp
We had dinner at T. Maccarones during a overnight stay in Walla Walla, and had a bottle of their house red, from Abeja. We liked it so much, we wanted to visit the winery the next day but found it was not open to the public. We called them and were directed to the Olive Marketplace where they said the wine was for sale, only to find they were sold out. We decided to drive out to the winery anyway, and found the gate locked. Apparently only guests of the Inn enjoy tasting! Not to be deterred, we drove in the production gate and found a nice employee who arranged for us to meet with a representative and purchase some wine.

Yelp
Abeja is an absolutely amazing experience. The wine was fabulous! The inn ( with adjoining fully operating winery )is beautifully appointed with well chosen antiques. Molly was great to work with in choosing new release wines. Thank you Molly for letting us claim a case the morning of our departure! Mary the innkeeper was very welcoming and personable despite being sick. The breakfasts are gourmet, unusual and very tasty. We stayed in the newly renovated "chicken coop " and couldn't give it a higher recommendation. For a truly memorable and romantic weekend Abeja exceeded our expectations!
