I had to fly to San Diego last minute in the middle of a family vacation in Hawaii. Work related, of course. Good news is I found Above Ash Social. The setting is really cool - rooftop in the middle of a little Italy, San Diego. Giant rooftop area with a giant TV playing most popular sporting event of the day. But the reason for this post is the food. I ordered the apple arugula salad with steak (regular). A few too many reasons for my liking. Especially since the apple already gives a sweet tone, but other than that, it was spectacular. My way to recommended a cab that was excellent. Ordered the dressing on the side as always to avoid a potential overdressing disaster! Good job guys! I’ll be back!

I wanted to give this place a try last Saturday. It’s actually pretty cool. There is a big screen to watch a game. order your drink and food around fire place. They have happy hour 4-6pm every day (including weekends) Brussel sprouts and hummus was really tasty. Happy hour price for Beers are $5 wine is $10 and well drinks are $8 and some appetizers are half price. Our server was very nice also. Overall experience was great. Except, I dropped one star because of hostess (blonde girl) she didn’t even smile had a weird attitude. But for sure I’ll be coming back.

There are plenty of roof tops bars here in SD , but this one has a more luxurious ambiance than most places in the gas lamp district. Great view, great ambiance. The service is ok but we understand that there are currently shortages of staffing in the service industry.

Google
The staff is very attentive. Great outdoor space with fire pits and large screen TV. The food is mediocre. Lamb chops under seasoned. Salad with fried goat cheese was my favorite, need more goat cheese. Ordered just goat cheese and drizzled them with their personal sized honey.

Very nice rooftop bar. I did not give 5 Stars do to our reservation for a specific table not being honored at our on time arrival. That being said the Manager organized having another table brought over and gave us a complementary drink. Very good customer service! Highly recommend checking it out if your in San Diego.

The food here was next level! The osso bucco was delicious and the rooftop was great! Jose was so sweet, overall such a great experience!

I was staying at the hotel, and wow, what a great place for drinks! They have happy hour 4-6pm every day (including weekends), I would highly recommend happy hour its like 1/4th the price. As a hilton diamond member I was credited $30 + $12 per day, so I got $42 off my bill for the first night. It was friday night so there was definitely a lot of people who weren't staying at the hotel, but just came up to this area for the social scene!

First time here, went for a girls dinner date. The drinks was good per my friends, I had a strawberry mojito mocktail since I'm pregnant. I really loved the Steamed Mussels & drink, 10/10!! However, my friends said theirs dishes was ok. They enjoyed the salads, their lobster roll had more shrimp than lobster, blackened salmon was good, but one return her risotto. The ambience was nice! Outside doors are open and it’s roof top so it can get chilly from the breeze. Outside is a nice fire-pit setup. They offer heaters inside as well. Valet parking is only $10 all night if they stamp your ticket, it saves you $5!

Yelp
This rooftop lounge is such a gem! Conveniently located on the 16th floor of Carté Hotel in Little Italy. The lounge comprise of 3 separate rooms: 1) An open lounge area with a huge big screen tv. 2) An indoor bar area with open table and seating. 3) Another gorgeous outdoor area with string patio lights, fireplace, heating lamps and more seating area. This lounge has the perfect views and vibes. The waitress was very attentive and service was great. She recommended a few desserts and I had to try the strawberry shortcake. It was so tasty; the whipped cream, fresh strawberries and touch of mint was so refreshing. Paired with a hot cup of cafecito was perfect - enjoyed in front of the cozy fire and under the string lights. Definitely romantic and chill vibes. Overall, I absolutely loved the ambience of this rooftop lounge; it is so beautiful and relaxing. If you're ever looking for a place to stay at in San Diego near Little Italy, this place is it. I would definitely come back to this lounge when I return to San Diego.

Yelp
Cute location for drinks - but I would not eat dinner! Came in on Thursday night for dinner. Located on top floor of Carte hotel, it is an awesome location for happy hour and drinks. Food was disappointing! Burger came in cold, and likely it was made in the kitchen on lower floor and carried upstairs to restaurant. Caesar salad consisted of four leaves of romaine with dressing on them. Service was all right, but nothing special.

Yelp
I love coming here every time I am in Downtown SD! The ambience is great and the service is amazing, our server Jessica always greets us with such Joy and makes us feel welcomed:) They have a great selection of draft beer, Cali Creamin' Vanilla cream ale, Mother Earth 5% is my favorite draft beer! They had a Valentine's Day specialty menu and we tried the bucatini pasta with lobster and for desert we had the chocolate and strawberry. The carte burger was very good and so is their calabrese pizza!

Yelp
Super fun spot! We went up twice since we were staying at the hotel. Drinks were yummy and the music was on POINT! Such a chill vibe with a great view. We sat at the bar once night and struck up great conversations with the bartender, Danyelle! She was fabulous!

Yelp
What a lovely rooftop restaurant at the modern style Carte- Hilton in San Diego! Loved coming here for an easy fun and delicious dinner. The service was great, one of the waitresses Jhezzie was the best she brought our drinks & food out immediately, always greeted us with a smile and gave us great recommendations of fun things to do in San Diego. One dish that stood out was the truffle poutine. The only thing better than fries would be fries topped with fried cheese & gravy and this did not disappoint. The truffle flavor brought it from a 10 to an 11/10. The restaurant lounge space itself is very modern in its style & appearance, great for anything from family vacation dinner to business dinner. I would definitely come here again to both stay in the hotel and dine in. This restaurant and hotel definitely made my stay in SD extra enjoyable.

Yelp
16 FLOORS ABOVE ASH (5 stars) - FOOD/DRINKS: yums - SERVICE: excellent - PRICE: hotel prices - AMBIANCE: beautiful What a gem! I love how it's NOT located in Gaslamp where all the other rooftops are or in overly populated areas like Little Italy - not into crowds (obviously) haha. It's a bit off to the side. The vibe is cool, mostly business/grown people and very mature crowd. It's smaller than the pictures portray but it's still spacious in its way. Part of it is indoor, part of it is outdoor, stunning views of downtown and buildings (not so much the water). Playing 90s r&b and 90s hits (SO MY VIBE). :: FOOD/SIPPIES :: TRUFFLE POUTINE ($24) - French fries, beer braised short rib, cheese curd, truffle + mushroom gravy, truffle zest. My goodness, this was super delicious. It's very hearty, very heavy, yup likely make your tummy turn a little, but all worth it. I tend to stay away from truffle flavored stuff if it's actually not the real truffle because truffle flavor can be quite overpowering. This has truffle flavor but was not truffled out. Plenty of fries coated with gravy that had small shavings of mushroom and light truffle flavor. The short ribs were very tender and flavorful. The cheese curds to my surprise were touch. It was exciting when one popped into the mouth because the flavor of truffle, gravy, fries, short rib and then cheese curd all in a bite was deeeeeslicious. Whatever you don't eat you can pack to-go. Did you know this is only $12 during HH. HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOREVER YOURS ($18) - You & Yours Sunday gin, pandan, lemon St. Germain, camomile, soda. I loved everything about this drink from the light spritz feel, to the refreshing flavors, and of course a loyal consume to You & Yours. Perfect drink to sip on during a meal. HIGHLY RECOMMEND :: SERVICE :: I had a really good server named Bernadette. She recommended the right items when in limbo, checked up on all her tables at the right times, not too much and not too little. Very good customer service that you don't typically see from an average server. Tip those people tell! Will I be back? This could be a regular occurrence. JABA APPROVED. Until the next review...

Yelp
Sat out side for a quick night cap! Views around the fireplace were great. Service was subpar and took a while despite there being no one else out there. Drinks were delicious! Gelato was great.

Yelp
Nice rooftop bar and lounge. They have an outdoor big screen TV and typically show relevant sporting events live. Servers are all friendly and the food is good. They have a nice range of highlighted cocktails and a full bar with beer on tap. Prices are elevated as a result of being attached to the hotel. Service was exceptional!

Yelp
The ambiance is cool, has plenty indoor, out door seating. The outdoor is kinda odd because it is does get hot during summer ( they have umbrella but doesn't help on a hot SD day). I can only comment on the HH, the food options were meh in general, nothing light or summery or hot weather friendly; so got pizza, dip n fries ( not the choices I will make in summer for HH). The food was okay, drinks were alright. The service was great, very attentive, checked on us often enough but not too often to make us uncomfortable. The views are great, multiple TV playing games so it is a good place to watch a game, catch up with friends. I might go again- to watch game or quick drink with friends but not food.

Yelp
Once again Raul and the staff at Above Ash have made our night memorable ! Sat us right away, got us lovely drinks and made stellar recommendations on the brand new menu!! We had the fresh sea bass that came with fregola in a roasted bell pepper tapenade + herbed cheese and was simply to die for. The black hummus was perfectly seasoned and the warm naan and cool crudités were absolutely delicious! We will be back - thank you Raul & crew

Yelp
Great happy hour/sunset spot. You enter through the hotel next to Fit, once in the lobby someone directed us to the elevator and the proper floor. Up top it's very cute. Nice comfortable seating. There were only a few other people at the bar when we were there on a Wednesday evening. We both went for the mezcal margarita (which the waitress mistakenly told us was the happy hour special even though happy hour was over, but gave us the happy hour price anyway. Waitress service was very good, checking in on us etc. We decided to go with a pizza to share (and they even bring over a little extra table to put the pizza on so that we didn't have to lean over to the low set table).

Yelp
My husband and I had a lovely time splurging at Above Ash Social! Cocktails are a bit pricey but worth the trip up Carte Hotel for the fantastic view overlooking downtown San Diego. The oversized TV was fun, but got tiresome since it was mostly showing advertisements and had an almost strobe-like effect throughout the bar whenever there were bright white transition screens. The TV was a bit distracting from the otherwise scenic skyline, especially when more entertaining TBS and game feeds were streaming on smaller TVs by the bar. Once we settled in, we enjoyed our delicious craft cocktails and excellent service. If you're looking for scenic drinks just a few blocks from the Little Italy area, this hotel bar is worth a try!

Yelp
I had such a good experience here. Located on the top of the the carte hotel, this is a good spot to meet for drinks, watch the game, or have a celebratory dinner. There is a lot of indoor-outdoor connection with large open windows, floor to ceiling glass windows on the inside, and 2 patios. The first patio when you walk in has a giant projector which at the time was streaming the basketball game (probably the nicest place to watch a sports event because this definitely is not a sports bar). The first patio also has firepits and a more private area on the side if you are there with a big group and want your own space. The second patio however has a view of the water and it is absolutely gorgeous! There is a huge firepit that seats probably 10 people around it, so good for a large group or just a couple to share with other people there. The inside has the large floor to ceiling windows, still with views of the water but a more formal setting for a celebratory dinner. We got the brussels sprouts and cauliflower which were both delicious and available on their happy hour menu! I love when a place has some vegetarian options so I appreciated that, but they do have a full dinner menu as well. There are plenty of cocktails or a wine menu to choose from as well. I would definitely recommend this if you are in the downtown/little Italy area and I will for sure be coming back.

Yelp
Loved our visit here. Hot new* (revamped menu with new chef) place on the rooftop of a boutique hotel in Little Italy. Great view: CHECK Cutting-edge and delicious mixology: CHECK Delicious and creative food: CHECK Friendly servers: CHECK!!! First, I need to say I'm a fan of this chef! Chef Phil Hoffer worked many years at Grant Grill as the Chef de Cuisine, and put in time as a sous chef in many other top places in San Diego, including at AR Valentien and Vistal in the Hotel Intercontinental (under Amy DiBiase). I love his food and have been waiting for him to be able to run the show somewhere and create his own menu. He's now executive chef for the whole Carte Hotel, and we're so glad we got to visit! First, the VIEW: there are several different terraces. One has a giant full screen TV, looking toward Petco. Others have sunset views or look over other parts of the city. Second, the DRINKS! Look at the cocktail menu, which was designed by a mixologist who just moved down from LA. It is off the hook creatively, whether you want pandan cocktails, a Green Leaf Collins with verdita and verjus leaf, or whatever! I love that the menu shows you whether a cocktail is up, long or short. I got the STEEL RANGER, which was INCREDIBLE: Limavady single malt irish whiskey, italicus bergamot, giffard peach, cream sherry, meyer lemon oleo saccharum. YUM. I'd get this again but I want to try other things! Since we love Chef Phil, we wanted to try a bunch of different apps amongst us. We got: --PIQUILLO PEPPER MUHAMMARA (fun middle eastern spread, with carrots, pita etc.). It's also super healthy. I wouldn't get this alone but if you're getting a bunch of dishes, it's very tasty. --BLOODY MARY FINGERLING POTATOES: *absolute winner*. Chef Phil is the king of potatoes - the fingerlings are off the hook. PLUS really delicious brussel sprouts, pickled onions, feta, olives and an awesome horseradish chile sauce. This is a must get dish if you like brussels & potatoes and generally yummy things. --TRUFFLE POUTINE: french fries, beer braised short ribs, truffle + mushroom gravy, truffle zest, cheese curds. I don't eat meet but my sweetie was raving about the short ribs (this is not just french fries + gravy) and we all loved the cheese curds. --CHARCUTERIE PLATE: we didn't get a full one but tried some of the cheeses (YUMMMM), the marcona almonds and fruit. Ditto I tried tinned anchovies in olive oil (not on the menu I don't think). I don't usually like anchovies but they were so good. --LITTLE GEM WEDGE: (we got pancetta on the side). The smoked blue cheese dressing was SO good. Definitely recommended. --POISSON CRU with taro chips: very fresh fish and we loved the taro. This might need a little tweak, with more lime in the coconut lime vinaigrette to give it more of a kick. I liked it - but with all the food on the table I just didn't finish this, and wouldn't say it's the #1 thing to get if you're only doing 1 app. ENTREES: we ordered too many apps and were starting to get full! But we had: --California White Seabass with purple cauliflower puree, romanesco, braised rainbow swiss chard, tarragon beurre blanc. The seabass could use some lemon or lime on the side to moisten it, but the sides were awesome. I could eat the purple cauliflower puree every day, and the rest was yummy. --BUFFALO MOZZARELLA AND WATERMELON SALAD: one of us got this for an entree and loved it (I didn't taste it because I was getting full but it looked yummy) --30 DAY DRY-AGED NY STRIP: the meat eaters in our group got this. I can't speak to the steak, but the twice baked garlic confit potatoes were again REDONKULOUS. As I said, Chef Phil is the king of potatoes. We waited a bit and shared 3 desserts. --SMORES: The smores eater in the group liked the smoked marshmallows best. I don't like marshmallows but LOVED the chocolate mousse on top. --SPUMONI PANNA COTTA with cacao nibs, strega infused luxardo cherries, candied pistachios. Ayy! A very refined and creamy dessert that even my teen liked. The cherries especially... MMMMMMM. --CREAMSICLE: I didn't taste it but my kid loved it. Lots of details for y'all - but I hope that gives you a taste of this FAB new place. Go just for drinks and sunset - or have a full meal. It's so yummy and I'm thrilled to have this new place with such great outdoor dining AND drinks AND views (!!) in Little Italy.

Yelp
Located inside Carte hotel, Above Ash Social is a hole in the wall spot that is too good to gate-keep! I learned about Above Ash from my favorite SD instagram influencer, @mish_critiques. I usually love all her stuff so I was surprised with the low reviews on yelp. I decided to go anyway for the great views and to try something new. My friends and I ordered the chilaquiles, iced mocha, and creme brûlée. which were all so good! I will definitely come back here on another Sunday brunch or an evening dinner date. The view was amazing. It overlooks Little Italy and the Midway. If you don't mind walking, there are a lot of parking spots available within 5 minutes of carte hotel. It's also really close to extraordinary dessert so if you want to grab dinner and go there, you totally can but they do have desserts available and their crème brûlée was really good. In regards to service, it was great at 11 am but slow after 12 since there was one server for 5-7 tables and it was busy!! She was still really sweet tho but I can see people becoming impatient with the wait time. Parking: Valet or meter parking. Free street parking on Sundays. You welcome ;) Food: $$ Tip: come early and order the chilaquiles! So good!

Yelp
Fantastic views, delicious food, happy hour, and friendly service, what more do you need? It is located on the top floor of a hotel, so a bit hidden but worth it. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
More of a fun bar with food to hang out at than a restaurant. Menu was trying to be fancier then it was, a lot of words most don't understand to describe drinks and entrees. Not sure about the food, never got to order dinner after almost an hour of being seated. Bloody Mary Fingerling Potato's app was good, and the drinks were good. Server might have been having a bad night, the place was half full when we got there and the dining area was almost empty when we gave up and asked for our check. Maybe check on us every 15 min? Might give it another shot if the mood hits us - the bar and lounge area looked like a lot of fun to hang out.

Yelp
I love the ambiance and view from this place! It's on the top of a hotel, and it wasn't busy when I came in for a drink with my friend on Wednesday night. The patio was kept reasonably warm, but I came dressed to be outside on a San Diego winter night. It's moderately priced, and the drink was REALLY good. I highly recommend the Crimson Ghost if you like spicy drinks. It was one of the best drinks I've had in Little Italy. The food was above average, but nothing I would return for. I would return for the drink most definitely.

Yelp
16th floor restaurant with a bar and indoor and outdoor dining at the Carte Hotel between Ash and State. Dinner service is at 5pm so before then and after brunch you can only order appetizers. We ordered the pulled pork sliders, ahi Poki, and fries. All dishes were fantastic. Poki was fresh and cold, fries were cooked well and pulled pork wasn't dry!
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Rooftop bar with a view of the city. Food is limited but nice cocktail menu. I paired my Sauvignon blanc with fried goat cheese and local honey. Great ambiance, light tables and plenty of seating indoors. Outside is a giant TV and 3 seating areas.
google avatar

Lulu Z.

Yelp
Still hungover from the previous night, so I went with a light meal- Got the Stone Fruit Salad. Light honey vinaigrette. Creamy avocado slices (wish there were more avocado slices). Crushed pistachio with mascarpone. Lots of textures in one dish. Not a fan of the still water. The waitress was really nice about finding me a bottle of sparkling. Staff were all really friendly and attentive. Multiple times stop by to check up on us. Appreciated.

Yelp
You enter through the Carte Hotel but it doesn't have a parking structure. You either valet or find street parking. Lots of construction going on. It's on the 16 floor and the elevator screen is all digital. It has several sitting areas, one of them has a huge tv and table fire side. To me, this place is just like any other roof top bar with a view. There's no dress code, it's San Diego so people were super casual. We came during happy hour from 4-6 so you got a mixture of hotel guests and people getting off work. You'll get the ones in suits, in business casual and those who looked like going to the beach. The food is average and expensive but that's the price for the area. The drinks are good. You get 50% off appetizers except for the charcuterie board. -Crispy cauliflower - sweet with honey and crunch with the almonds and dates -Brussels - very skimpy on the pork belly. Only found one piece! -Ahi crudo - only came with two slices. Good thing it was half off at $10. Not worth if. -Guacamole - instead of chips, it comes with chicharron so that's a different twist. However the first time, it came out with chips on the side and we had to tell them. Then she brought it out. We ordered it the second time and this time it was served correctly but it was plated with the chicharron on top. -Charcuterie board- this is a rip off at $21 that comes with grapes, cheese and baguette. Everything else is a add on at $3 a piece like olives, honey, jam, meat. -Cacio e Pepe - we added chicken for another $6. It's spaghetti with white sauce like an Alfredo. Nothing special. I would recommend to come here for the drinks and look at the view. Come during happy hour for the 50% off but don't waste your wallet on lunch and dinner.

Yelp
HH M-F 4-6: all domestic beers $5, $10 off shareable appetizers, and $8 domestic mixed cocktails. We ordered HH items (minus the old fashioned). Whiskey & ginger-ale, brussels sprouts so good and well seasoned with the perfect crunch to each bite, and ahi tuna nachos, so good as well you can tell it's fresh. Not sure how much the old fashion cocktail was was being that it wasn't offered as an HH item, however, our tab for two rounds of drinks and the 2 appetizers, came out to about $60.Xx. Super cheap! Slight note on the old fashioned, it was a little too sweet to our liking. The drinks were strong we were surprised. The place had areas to hangout all around with views of the city on each side. The staff were social, attentive, and fun to interact with. Fast service as well. We definitely recommend this spot to all of our friends visiting SD in the near future. Please note, it's the roof top bar of the hotel, Crate. Visited SD and tumbled across this rooftop bar while roaming downtown after the prier. It was a late afternoon/early evening on a Thursday so it wasn't too full. There were a few folks at the bar dinning.

Yelp
I wish I was able to leave a better review, but after 2 tries, we were pretty disappointed. The first visit was at the beginning of March for dinner. It's a rooftop bar, but the middle section is enclosed (with doors they keep open) and it was FREEZING. We asked for a heat lamp (twice) the first time she went to look and the second time said she was still looking. The guys in our group went and pulled one over on their own after waiting over 30 minutes. *Everything took forever* Since it's on the roof, the food is brought up in the elevator (from the hotel kitchen I'm guessing) so I'm not sure if this is what made the device lack- but it was pretty bad. Two of us ordered the chicken sandwiches- and both came back uncooked in the middle. We reordered one and the other switched to a hamburger. We needed to wait for that, and by the time it came out, the rest of the table was done eating. The chicken sandwich was good, the appetizers were a hit though. 2nd visit was brunch. It was underwhelming and advertised as reggae themed (which we assumed was live music) but hey just had light music playing over the speakers. Pretty views though.

Yelp
Great place to come for either happy hour or even to watch a sporting event due to their big screen. Raul is extremely helpful and gave us excellent customer service. Definitely want to try the food but I've only had drinks ip here. Hoping to come back soon

Yelp
Had a short stay at the Carte hotel for the weekend and decided to eat at their hotel Above Ash Social the first night. My server Marius was fantastic and the food was great. Had the osso bucco for dinner which was so tender and flavorful. Finished the meal off with some delicious dark chocolate gelato. Great meal and incredible service.

Yelp
Delicious drinks, great poutine and AMAZING pear and persimmon cobbler. Quick and friendly service! Amazing view of San Diego, it is a little bit on the pricey side but still with the stop by!
google avatar

Tonya H.

Yelp
Such a cute hidden gem! With rooftop seating options around the restaurant you have choices for your view. Loved their truffle poutine with braised short-ribs, mushrooms and cheese curds. It was a large portion, and easily could have been shared with 3-4 ppl for a taste before your entree, or ordered for an entree instead. Try the Forever Yours (gin based) or Carrot+corn (mezcal based) drinks for fun flavor combos! Thanks Jessica for the awesome service!

Yelp
I had a couple of apps and a glass of wine here and it was great. I can't believe I had not been here before. The views of Little Italy are amazing! They have a comedy show set up for every third Thursday which I would love to come back for!

Yelp
Not worth a second visit. At first glance the lobby and location is nice and really thought we were in for a great experience but it was actually far from it. our waitress (tori I think was her name) took our drink and food order but never seen her again. She never came back to see how our food was, if we wanted more drinks. Not sure if she was on break, but no other waiter/waitress came by either despite seeing new faces. We had to get up and ask our bartender for the check. The service definitely does not match the location.

Yelp
great, quick brunch spot located at rooftop (16th floor) of the Carte hotel! Lots of paid-parking in the surrounding area. Try the bloody Mary and don't forget your sunglasses! beautiful views of the bay and city all around. great service but very limited brunch menu.

Yelp
We were incredibly disappointed. I always like to try new places, and the photos and menu looked great. Unfortunately, it was not even close to enjoyable. Food: I will begin by saying they were not even close to being at 50% capacity - because I am very forgiving of packed restaurants. However, It took over an hour to get our Charcuterie Board (no cooking required). And over another hour for our meal. But usually, the long wait is forgiven once your food comes, but it was only further downhill from there. I have never tasted a more bland, flavorless meal ever. And my guests had the same experience. Environment: Even at barely 50% capacity, it was deafening. We were all not even speaking to each other because if we were to, we would have to yell, further adding to the loud volume. Unfortunately, it was just a fail all the way around. Certainly not worth the $80-$100 per person, with two drinks per person, an appetizer for the table, and individual meals.

Yelp
Great service! Was super fast. Came up for a night cap and was starving after a night out with the hubs. Was greeted right away and sat at the bar. There were still plenty of seats and it was 10 pm. There were parties there and looked like a great time. The Carte burger was done just right and was very tasty. It was also a double burger which came as a surprise and even had fries. Will definitely come here again! Kudos to the bartenders and servers!

Yelp
Been here twice and I have to say both experiences were completely different. The first time, the drinks were good, service was great, and I thoroughly enjoyed Above Ash. Enjoyed it enough to come back with some friends months later on a not-so-busy Saturday. The service was slow. I'm sure there's still staffing issues in the industry, but getting orders, drinks, food, the check, etc. Took FOREVER. My drink had a bug in it and after 10 minutes of waiting for the waiter to come by, I decided to bring it back to the bar myself. Gross The poke nachos looked good but tasted like old fish in soy sauce. Truffle fries were better. Overall experience was the opposite from my first. I'm not a fan of fishy fish or buggy drinks so don't think I'll be back unfortunately

Yelp
Views views views! This place is seriously awesome during a sunset! The vibe is great, you can dress up or casual. We came here first before getting our night started and it did not disappoint. What's nice about this location is that its hidden above a hotel, so it's not as busy making it easier to squeeze in for happy hour. They have some really neat furniture arrangements to sit on plus a very very large TV screen that plays movies or sports. They have some modern. fire pits areas too. The staff is really accommodating and friendly as well! We were a party of 13 and they did have some tables available to push together but we really wanted a view- so the staff let us snag some chairs where ever we liked! Drinks were super yummy, bathrooms conveniently located near by as well. Definitely will be returning!

Yelp
The food was great, the place was very nice asides from the extremely loud Christmas music. We had the beet salad, Bianca pizza, ahi poke, and the wagyu NY strip. The drinks how ever took 10-15 minutes to arrive, which ruined the experience for us. We ate most of the food without a drink.

Yelp
Fries were cold af, the service was poor, instead of serving they were busy talking with people. Disappointed

Yelp
Arrived on a Tuesday night. Was not impressed at all. The old fashions were great. The charcuterie board was good. They took about 45 mins to bring our entrees out. The Cacio e Pepe was extremely dry. Ordered 3 Wagyu filet mignon, the waitress did not ask how we wanted our steaks cooked, therefore it came out very rare. our Our server was nice enough to apologize for the long wait & offered complementary round of drinks. Would come back only for drinks.

Yelp
Beautiful atmosphere with a great view. It's definitely on the expensive side but the food was good. I got messy fries and my friend got a spring pizza, both of those were DELICIOUS, especially the pizza, I'd order that all week long. It was chilly out and our waitress came out with- get this- blankets for usssss! The down side- one of my friends ordered chicken, it didn't come out for over thirty minutes and by that time we had all gotten and finished our food. The thing wasn't really that there was an issue in the kitchen, but that nobody communicated this to my friend who was waiting and asked about it. She got it to go.

Yelp
Love this place. Stayed at the property and went up for happy hour twice. They offer happy hour every day from 4pm-6pm. Great prices, $5 draft beers, $8 well drinks and $9 wine. Shareable apps are half off ranging from $5-$10 with the discount. Amazing views, beautiful decor, great service!

Yelp
Above Ash Social has an above average downtown view with below average happy hour menu and food. Street parking wasn't too difficult on the weekend and you'll find yourself at the right location once you see the valet out front. Go past the couches towards the elevators and take it up to the rooftop. Although I made a reservation, no one checked and we were told to take a seat anywhere. There was one server covering the whole floor so she took a while to greet us. The daily happy hour from 4-6 wasn't promoted and the drink specials covered only some beers and wines, not cocktails. The half off bites were misleading because they were half priced and also half sized. In the end, our server recommended getting the original portion. =ORDERED= Make sure to place in your orders early because we were checked on every 30 minutes and the food took equally as long to come out. *Tuna Nachos: crispy wonton chips with a salty Asian inspired marinade. Had some sweetness from the pineapple, creaminess from the avocado and punch from the ginger. However for $17, I was underwhelmed by the amount of tuna and how it was prepared. Besides a few cubes, most of the tuna was cut into slivers with connective tissue still intact. Very little tuna with minimal flavoring. *Fries: best item we had all evening. Fries were hot and crispy with a strong truffle taste. Nice saltiness from the parmesan with a rather average ketchup. One of the best truffle fries I've ever had. *Sunday Flowers: was beautifully presented although it didn't change color as advertised. Very sour and salt forward. Personally, didn't enjoy the graininess of the drink. *Golden Hour: citrusy and surprisingly the bourbon wasn't too harsh. The pink peppercorn and honey foam was non-existent and this tasted closer to a boozy lemonade than anything. *Illusione: best cocktail of the three. Resembled an alcoholic hot chocolate with the foamy cinnamon honey top. Warmed the soul in a different way. Our servers were friendly but unfortunately overworked. It was particularly chilly that day so we asked for a heater but it took 30 minutes for a staff member to fix the heater and then find a way to turn it on. Since the venue was so open, there weren't enough heaters to go around so I can't see Above Ash Social being too pleasant to be at in the evenings. Tables weren't being cleaned actively since there was only one server with one other person manning the dirty dishes. The view was indeed the best part about Above Ash Social. Considering we came for happy hour, we were disappointed to hear how the deals were irrelevant in terms of pricing and sizing. For the prices they're charging, the food and drinks should have been much better. Service took forever and I rather get my happy hour fill elsewhere. Forgettable night, unforgettable lesson to not return.

Yelp
This place is super nice, good food crafty drinks, and amazing view. However, we went in a big group so that means the gratuity was included and the service Was absolutely terrible. Our server was named tori and she sucked!!!

Yelp
Discovered this gem of a rooftop Happy Hour destination earlier this year and return often to meet friends who live/work nearby, and/or take the trolley to join us from afar. Highlights: The front-of-house staff is professional and attentive. The chef has made the rounds of other quality kitchens and provides consistently good preparations, large and small. The happy hour menu is a great "light meal" option to share with friends Good veggie HH options- everyone enjoyed the brussel sprouts (meat removed/onside), cauliflower, hummus, and patatas bravas- delicious flavors, good "tapas" menu Bonus: They offer Guadalupe Valle/Baja Mexico wines- a rare find! Try the Mont Xanic for a real treat- delicious, one of the best from the region Lowlights: Noise! Despite being an open-air venue on the 16t floor, when a table is full of people celebrating loudly the acoustics of the space bounce the sounds around Vanishing sunset views due to construction next door- enjoy them while you can! Be prepared for things out of their control, including: Chilly weather: San Diego does NOT have a "tropical" climate, and when the cool breeze off the Pacific Ocean/bay blows in the temperatures drop quickly. Homelessness: the street scene upon arrival/departure may be rough to hear, see and smell. San Diego has 1000s of unsheltered people all over downtown and this area is no different. While homelessness is not as evident as in the East Village (where many shelters are located), and the life night is not as raucous as in the Gaslamp - there are many people sleeping rough around the hotel- on the sidewalks, and in tents- so be prepared for that "ambience" before/after your visit.

Yelp
Wanted to enjoy this a place after our Alice in Wonderland experience since it's in the same hotel but unfortunately we did not. They sat us at an uncleaned table and took 20 mins for them to take our drink order. Took another 20 mins to bring out a glass of beer and rosé. They didn't even bring water that my friend ordered. So by that time I did not want to order any food and just asked for the check. Not sure how new they are but hopefully they'll improve.

Yelp
My friend and I went to Above Ash Social not knowing what it was. We had an Alice in Wonderland event next door and needed to eat prior to. We were pleasantly surprised! When we got out of the elevator and stepped onto the rooftop restaurant/lounge, it had such a cool vibe! There were tables and chairs strewn around, a large TV, bar, tables and of course the incredible view! I ordered the airline chicken and it was delicious! Nice and moist and the roasted chick peas were so good! My friend had the scallops and he loved it. There was a little snafu on our orders (we never received our appetizer) and we had to flag down our waitress twice to ask if she could turn on the heat lamp. Just minor concerns, but everything else was on point. I'm going to come back with my family and friends- perhaps check into hosting a little get together. I really like this place! Oh and you can valet for $10 when you get your ticket validated at the restaurant.

Yelp
Came here for a birthday gathering over the weekend. We came during happy hour which wasn't too packed and the space was not over crowded. The view is amazing during sunset , which lights on in surrounding building it was a spectacular view. The food was good and drinks were strong with limited happy hours options. Definitely had a great time with friends and is also able to enjoy the multiple tv screen and large led tv playing sport on the patio. Definitely recommend coming to check this place out if you're looking.

Yelp
Great food, great view, staff was so nice and accommodating. We did have a little mix up with a bill but the manager made it right!!

Yelp
Outdoor dining is great when it's warm and sunny...not so much when it's 55 degrees and dark out on a fall or winter night. We shivered our way through dinner while eating food that got cold the minute they brought it out to us. *Those photos of the restaurant showing heat lamps and big fire pits? Only if you're there for drinks. If you're there to eat a meal, no heat for you. The service was non-existent. The bar patrons get all the attention while we couldn't even get a drink refill. OpenTable is usually great at suggesting restaurants worthy of a special occasion, but this one really missed the mark.

Yelp
Stayed at the Carte Hotel and decided to check out the roof top bar. To bad it was raining so the bar was a bit chilly. But the good part was we share the entire bar with just 2 other people. Although it was cloudy the view was still very nice. Our server/bartender Tanya (she was very friendly and funny) recommended a mazcal drink that was delicious. Not too bitter or sweet just a nice refreshing pre dinner cocktail. The truffle fries were delicious. Crispy outside fluffy inside with nice flavor. I wanted to like the hamachi more. It was beautifully plated but the sauce lack something. Maybe a bit more citrus would help. The octopus and fish could be fresher. There was definitely a fishy aftertaste from the octopus that I did not enjoyed. Over all this is a great place to come to grab a drink and enjoy the view.
