"Abu’s Bean Pie Company in Bed-Stuy has been perfecting its bean pie recipe for over 20 years, and it shows. For the uninitiated, bean pies are usually made from navy beans, and are said to be the only Muslim American food in existence. They’re also delicious—four inches of custardy bottoms and golden brown top layers that are the texture of sweet, edible sand—and hard to find in the city, except at Abu’s." - molly fitzpatrick, willa moore, sonal shah, hannah albertine, neha talreja
"Abu’s Bean Pie Company in Bed-Stuy has been perfecting its bean pie recipe for over 20 years, and it shows. For the uninitiated, bean pies are usually made from navy beans, and come with a whole lot of history: popularized by the Nation of Islam back in the 1960s. They’re also delicious, and hard to find in the city—except at Abu’s. If you live in the area, the $6, 4-inch bean pies might quickly become your go-to treat. A birthday? A bean pie. An engagement party? Maybe two. The golden brown top layer has the texture of sweet, edible sand, while the bottom stays custardy. For extra credit ordering, there are a few other varieties of pie available at the shop, like sweet potato and coconut custard, as well as moist, heavily spiced carrot cake, and patties that always seem to be sold out. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute" - Willa Moore
"Abu’s specializes in the navy bean pie. It consists of a layer of mashed navy beans, topped with a layer of spices, heavy on cinnamon, and not overly sweet. Beyond the navy bean pie, there are also popular sweet potato, pecan, and coconut custard varieties. Abu’s offers pies in a variety of sizes from four-inch to nine-inch, with a single nine-inch bean pie going for $24." - Eater Staff
"Abu’s Homestyle Bakery in Bed-Stuy is famous for their navy bean pie. If you’re new to navy bean pie world, the bean pie is considered the only Black-American Muslim food in existence, and Abu’s Homestyle Bakery is one of the few places in the city that sells them. For Thanksgiving this year, support this Black-owned bakery and try a bean pie for yourself. They also sell sweet potato pie, pecan pie, and a coconut custard pie, as well as some sweet merch, in case you’re looking for holiday gifts. "We recently wrote about restaurants in each borough that’ll impress a native New Yorker. Even if you’re not from NYC, these spots (like an old-school bakery in Bed-Stuy serving navy bean pies, or cracker-thin pizza on Staten Island, or a Korean restaurant in Murray Hill, Queens where you can get a table full of excellent sushi and sashimi) would still make for the perfect plan on a plan-less weekend." - hannah albertine
