The Best Empanadas & Pastelitos In Seattle

"The pliable corn tortillas at this Mexican counter in Greenwood are excellent. So it only makes sense that Abuelita’s Kitchen’s deep-fried, corn-based empanadas are good, too. The massive parcel is shoved with moist chicken tinga and just enough gooey cheese to add some welcome fat. And it tastes even better doused in crema, cilantro-freckled guacamole, and zippy zucchini salsa. " - aimee rizzo, gabe guarente, carlo mantuano

Abuelita's Kitchen Review - Greenwood - Seattle - The Infatuation

"This Mexican counter in Greenwood is normally where you'll find us on a quiet weeknight, eating tacos and drinking goblet-sized frozen margaritas on a loop in the cerulean-painted backroom. That's in part thanks to a friendly staff, and also thanks to fried-to-order chips, starchy pintos, and pliable tortillas filled with a genius combination of melty pork belly cubes, carnitas, and crackly chicharron crumbled on top like pork-based graham cracker crumbs. But don't leave Abuelita’s Kitchen’s without a deep-fried empanada shoved with moist chicken tinga and just enough gooey cheese to add some welcome fat. The massive parcel tastes great on its own, and even better doused in crema, cilantro-freckled guacamole, and their zippy zucchini salsa from the complimentary salsa bar." - Aimee Rizzo

We ordered the chips and guac and a chicken burrito. They made us a fresh batch of chips because I am a vegetarian and the other chips are not vegetarian (fried in communal oil with meat). We really appreciated this. The beans and rice are vegan. They had a lovely selection of meat dishes, vegetarian dishes, and vegan dishes. The guacamole was fresh and delicious. There was a self serve salsa bar. The salsa we had was great. My husband enjoyed his burrito! The service was wonderful.

Google
We did catering for our staff party for 45 people, very sweet people to work with, great options for catering and a whole set up provided to keep food warm. We got so much food for the value which was great. The margarita bar was awesome too. Would use them again for catering.

Google
Delicious local spot - one of those underrated, little-known gems you want to keep a secret but deserves to be known! We loved their fresh food and incredible handmade tortillas, salsa bar with lots of heat and flavor profiles, and yummy margaritas. I’m vegan and appreciated the Cielo y Tierra tacos with seasoned yam, beet, carrot, and black bean mix. Even the rice and beans were better than a regular Mex restaurant, and our kid loved the food too. Easygoing, family-friendly atmosphere, locally owned, amazing food… we will be regulars!

Google
Really good food, and the best salsa bar in the area. They usually have 8 different options, all of them good. There is nothing too non-standard here, but they execute it well, and I'd say their gorditas are especially good. They have a couple vegetarian protein options and are generally happy to make modifications to menu items as you like. Higher prices than some places, but also really sizable portions - the main entrees are almost always two meals for me, so the price reflects what you get in my opinion. In terms of ambience, pretty much everything in that strip of Greenwood suffers from being an ancient building the landlord has clearly not taken the best care of, and they are no exception, but are perfectly homey and not unpleasant or anything.

Google
Crazy good food. The salsa bar is a must, they are all made in house and you can definitely tell. I had the chipotle and also tried the eggplant? One. Both extremely fresh and delicious. My main course was a Cali burrito, which was also delicious. But realistically the salsa was what did it for me.

Google
As Texan transplants, we have had trouble finding Mexican food that truly felt like home. This place was it. We had high hopes when we walked in and weren't disappointed. The quesa tacos with birria was pure happiness. The rice and beans were flavorful. The nachos asada were piled high with meat and cheese and jalapenos. The staff was all family and were so nice and helpful. I am so happy we found this place and can't wait to go back.

Google
Food was ok. Pictures are the nachos and pupusas. Pretty big portions, but really expensive. Service was absolutely awful. Really slow, we told her we want to order, then didn’t see her again for 10 minutes. Server knocked over a half full drink, breaking the glass, left glass shards on the floor, and didn’t offer to remake the drink?! We told her we had a 25% off Entertainment Coupon, they acted very sketchy about it, then only gave us 10% off (said they had recently decided not to be in the coupon book anymore, yet the coupon is not expired). There is also a hidden 5% credit card fee, on a $100 dinner, that’s annoying, since most people are not carrying that much cash. Not a fun relaxing night out, and way too overpriced. Never coming back.

Google
Our server Tony greeted us with such a genuine kindness that I was deeply moved by his friendly character. As we were sitting down to eat he said, with absolute sincerity, “I’m so excited for you guys!” As we debated which tacos to try. A business that appeals to the heart, as well as to the stomach, is a business built on kindness and love. The tacos were delicious; but I would return entirely for the service too. Such a fun place to eat and the self serve salsa bar was just a bonus. Highly recommend Abuelitas!

Yelp
The food was amazing and I highly recommend this place. At most restaurants the rice and beans really aren't great but here, the rice was fluffy and both rice and beans were quite tasty. My birria tacos were really good and my parents enjoyed the carne asada. We're in town from the San Francisco Bay Area and I'm glad we found them. Picture taken after realizing the food was great and I had to write a review.

Yelp
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Seattle that I've tried so far. Everything that we've ordered from here (either takeout or eating in the restaurant) is so incredibly good. Their cali boy burrito (ask for pork belly!) and their enchiladas are perfection. Definitely worth making a stop here, this restaurant is a Greenwood neighborhood gem!

Pam U.

Yelp
My first time eating here. I got a carnitas torta and it was delicious! The carnitas was really flavorful. I also tried a dessert, flan on chocolate cake. So good! Super nice people, too! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Updating to make this 5 stars. This place never disappoints. Tasty comfort food and warm friendly service.

Yelp
Really really good Mexican food in Greenwood! The best I've had in Seattle for sure. The salsa bar was amaaaaaazing, with 8 salsas available! Two of them were so good that we refilled our little cups. Definitely get the chips so you can try all the salsas. The flavors are authentic and the portions are huge! Prepared to be full. The veggie chile relleno was big and well-cooked, but I wasn't a fan of the earthy veggies inside and the sauce wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked. Dropping a star for this, but the gorditas and other dishes looked better! The staff is super kind. They sell their salsas to-go too! I'd definitely come back. The menu is a bit pricey, but it's good Mexican food in Seattle and the portions are so big that it's like two meals in one! :)

Yelp
Always a hit! Love the gorditas and pupusas. Salsa is always fresh and on point, so many choices, something for everyone.

Yelp
Fresh fresh fresh fresh and fresher Rebranded from luna azul Delicious classic burrito carne asada Pupusas melted in our mouths Guacamole tasted like butter and all kinds of goodness with out of this world homemade tortilla chips. Outdoor seating Quick service Horchata too much cinnamon Corn tortillas amazing I want to go back!

Yelp
I really think the only thing keeping this place from being packed is the aesthetic/low lighting. The food is SO good. Seriously. You get fresh piping hot chips and a full salsa bar with some of the best salsas I've found out here. I wish I could buy some of them in jars to take home. The tortillas are made in house. I've come here a handful of times now and ordered something different each time - each one, an absolute banger. Also, hands down, the best guacamole on seattle! Fight me on that. The staff is really lovely. They have outdoor seating available. Please check it out, I'll be so sad if they ever go away!

Yelp
Folks were very nice. Food was very average in my opinion. Got the pupusas- which I thought were on the dry side and had a really thick masa layer and not very much filling. (Saved by a lot of salsa.) The rice that came with it was very bland as well. Husband got the Torta which came on what was an American deli sub looking bread. Definitely firmer and a thicker bread, compared to what we've seen at most other places. The inside was pretty tasty and they have a nice selection of salsas which is always nice. Decent spot but definitely not on our top mexican food spots in seattle.

Yelp
Well everybody seems to love this place, including a close friend of mine; so maybe I am wrong here. I got a carne asada Cali burrito and it was not very good at all. My side of chips and guacamole was really yummy though. Maybe I just came by on a bad night?

Ducks L.

Yelp
Food is way over priced for the cheap garbage they give you complete crap carne asada I ordered well done didn't have one sear mark on it and was pink even on the outside dangerously undercooked and the rice and beans are the cheapest shit you can buy these people are the worst overpriced garbage if I was the owner I would be ashamed

Yelp
This is Luna Azul, just rebranded. This is a fantastic spot for Mexican food in north Seattle. They have the salsa bar, home made flan, and delicious tacos and tortas. Their birria taco is especially good, definitely stop in!
google avatar

Genae G.

Yelp
Food was gross, I ended up throwing it away! They microwaved old food! The rice was at least a day old, the meat was burnt and tough and had that warmed up in the microwave taste! Don't waste your money!
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
Do not miss this gem! Everything is house made from the salsa to perfectly crisp churros to a wide variety of salsas. The best, most tender pork belly I have had in a long time and refried beans with depth of flavor. Will be back and will drag everyone I know!

Yelp
Best Mexican food around! Authentic and delicious. Such friendly employees, maybe owner I am not sure but these people are special! I recommend this restaurant! Also there horchata and aqua de melon and watermelon are so good and fresh: I will try mango next time! Oooh and flan is great too! Eat here!

Yelp
Abuelita's Kitchen was a really amazing place to go. The customer service was amazing - super attentive, very kind. Offers suggestions about food to eat. There was a variety of different dishes. We each got something different to eat and everything looked really good. I had the chicken chile relleno. It was a little different than I expected, but the sauce was creamy and delicious. Full of flavor. We also enjoyed the caramel churro too. Would return.

Yelp
Abuelitas is delish. Came here after phinneywood art walk and got (BIG !) chicken empanadas and mushroom empanadas. Corn tortillas fried to perfection. Did not skimp on cheese. Salsa bar is beautiful. Crema and guac with both orders, and refried beans with my kiddos tacos, yum!

Yelp
The wife and I went here for a casual lunch date and it was fantastic! They are going through a rebrand so the inside is not finished and there is no alcohol but that didn't matter. The food was great, especially the carnitas and pork belly tacos and the self serve hot sauce and salsa was all great as well. Can't wait for the rebrand to finalize!

Ivona L.

Yelp
This place deserves 5 stars all around. The food was outstanding, great atmosphere/ Mexican music, the service exceeded my expectations. Very friendly servers and owner. The staff is actually family, it's a family own business. It was my first time but what a great experience!

Yelp
We popped into abuelita's when we were in the neighborhood and needing food without a wait. Initially when we walked in, we didn't know anything about the restaurant. It was hard to tell whether there was a dining room. Boy, were we surprised! The food was absolutely delicious. We have a high bar for mexican food and this is some of the best we've had in seattle. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating as well. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We had a wonderful breakfast! If you come, don't miss the chilaquiles. There's also a choice of several breakfast burritos and you get to help yourself to any and all of an assortment of homemade salsas. The service was friendly, and we had our fresh, made to order breakfast in minutes! We'll be back.

Yelp
First: Abuelita's is Luna Azul, just going through a rebrand currently As a native San Diegan (and Seattle transplant), I must admit that this Mexican food is authentic, extremely delicious, and just like if you went to your Abuela's house on a Sunday with cousins running around and Tias spilling the chisme. Pros: - Salsa bar. The most variety of salsas you have ever seen (even where I grew up) including a sweet habenero that was like nothing I've ever tried before, and extremely fresh and delicious. You can even hear the blender in the back making more for guests. - fresh chips & guacamole. Amazing - Al pastor to die for. I'm a huge Al pastor & adobada fan, and this stuff is legit. - the friendliest and kindness staff, who love the restaurant and sharing food with guests. Awesome folks. What may need changing: - the price man. $19 for a 4 taco plate with rice and beans is insane, I feel like a reduction to the $12-15 range for the same dish would bring in a lot more business. It's worth the cost, but hot damn I heard my Abuela screaming when she saw that price. - Specials when they can, would love to see a $1 street taco day (Tuesday usually) that would have the restaurant selling out. Overall, 5 star service, food, decor, and people. Come here!!!!

Yelp
Abuelita's Kitchen is a must for authentic delicious Mexican food. Stopped by here on a whim a few weeks ago and the food was incredible. Salsa bar is a plus and he owner is also extremely friendly and nice! Definitely check it if you're looking for solid Mexican food - already looking forward to my next visit!

Eva M.

Yelp
Just ate here for the first time tonight and so annoyed at myself for not coming here sooner?? It's some of the best Mexican food I've had in Seattle and the folks who work there are so sweet! The salsa bar is so good. Highly recommend the chicken chile relleno. Absolutely delicious and refreshing jamaica. Can't wait to try more of their food.

Christy A.

Yelp
Killer salsa bar, homemade tortillas, interesting veggie/vegan options, super nice staff...what more do you need? Plus it looks like there's an actual abuelita in the kitchen. My husband's chicken chile relleno came with the most amazing sauce--I couldn't stop swiping it up with chips. (The veggie chile relleno is stuffed with different root veggies and comes with a roasted chile sauce). Next time I'll try the mushroom empanadas. There were 2 salsas--the roasted tomato and another that was a smooth, red-orange puree--that I could have drank straight from the bowl.

Yelp
We love this place and the family who run it. Our go to neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Absolutely delicious! Don't forget to try their cakes too.

Casey C.

Yelp
As another reviewer said, this place is Luna Azul with a new name. This is some of the best mexican food i've had, and i used to live in california. The staff was super friendly but not overbearing. Their tortillas are the best I have had for sure. The salsas were delicious and there were plenty of options. I can't recommend this place enough.

M R.

Yelp
Nice chicken tortilla soup. Enjoyed it to bits. Was just walking around Greenwood and felt like having a soup for lunch and here you go.

Anthony C.

Yelp
Great guacamole and salsa bar! We ordered two rounds of chips, guacamole, and salsa for appetizers and ate every last bit. Tacos were fresh, tortillas fresh and soft. Flavors were epic! There's even a happy hour. Did I mention the salsa bar? Yummmm!

Grace C.

Yelp
The food was delicious and portions very generous! The service was also incredibly friendly and fast. I ordered the taco plate which was flavorful and not too greasy. Will definitely be going back!

Aalendrie C.

Yelp
Amazing costumer service!!! Closest Mexican food to resemble Southern California Mexican food

Elizabeth I.

Yelp
This was delicious! We stopped by for lunch on a whim and I'm so glad we did. We had the tacos and a burrito, both carne asada. Their salsa choices are a nice range and extremely flavorful. The flavors were all fantastic, including the rice and beans. Their tortillas were really soft as well, with the perfect amount of filling. The staff were really nice too.
