19 Extraordinary West African Restaurants in New York City

"Africana is located in Jamaica, close enough to JFK to catch the traffic. Unlike neighboring Tropical Grill, Africana seems like a small cafe rather than a nightclub. The classic beans with dodo (fried plantains) make a nice meal, with or without fried fish, or you might explore the multiple leaf- and seed-based sauces. They include egusi (made with melon seeds) and edikaikong (waterleaf and pumpkin). A range of mashes like fufu (white yam) and amala (cassava flour) are available to go with the sauces. This is real homestyle Nigerian cooking." - Robert Sietsema

We were here for vacation. My husband is from the DRC. for those who don’t know, that’s the Democratic Republic of Congo. I am American, but I love their food. We make it all the time we wanted to go somewhere that felt like home and this was right on the dot. The food was so soft and so yummy perfectly spice you must come try. They have wonderful service they make you feel welcomed and at home and the owner blessing is her name she’s phenomenal. Please come and enjoy the African food. The African experience.

Their food is so good. I have never had any course to complain about. I can eat here all day but it’s a little pricy.

I landed in JFK, all famished, and I wanted great African food. I booked a hotel near the airport, and by chance, this place was within walking distance. I came by just minutes before they closed for the night. I ordered take-out. I got beef soup with two fufu, and let me tell you! It was what I had imagined of what I was craving as soon as I landed back in NY! Auntie was super friendly and served me the perfect amount of food. Thank you, Auntie! Your food was so, so delicious!

Google
TThe owner pretends to not see customers We walked in while she was dealing with a customer. She dealt with him then went to the back to call a worker to deal with us . She ignored our presence the entire time we were there . She did not even wanna serve our food . The server that dealt with us (the Indian girl) she was the reason we stayed there . If you’re not African don’t go there expecting good service . Ps they don’t even have menus in the restaurant. You’re expected to go on google to see what they have .

Yelp
Food is amazing!!! I was recommended to this restaurant by a coworker, and I have been going there ever since as an American that is the best African food I have eaten I love the eguai and the spicy okra

Yelp
The customer service was good. The dining area was clean. The soup was tasty. I received more pounded yam than I was expecting, which is a plus. The only negative was the goat was cooked soft on some pieces and tougher on others. It could've been more consistent. Overall, I would certainly come back. I'd try a different meat with my meal.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the owner has hospitality. Food was brought to the table timely and with a smile.

Yelp
Treated me and my princess to African food lastnight...the showstopper was the fufu of course. It went so perfect with the fufu you can tell the meat was cleaned and seasoned perfectly to perfection. The soup broth was yum. The jollof rice, stewed meat and the herring spinach crazy, spicy beautiful mixture. Blessing helped me and since she shared her name I knew the food would be blessed. She guaranteed you will be back lol, a little pricey but it's nice to treat yourself sometimes We enjoyed and had leftovers for a few days. The ambiance of the restaurant is calm, family homey vibes but as for me I was into going back to my abode and enjoying the food.

Yelp
Verbal confirmation that their meat is all halal. Ordered 2 fufus + 1 egusi stew with mixed meat. It was good, 4/5 only bc it was pretty expensive (23 dollars for my meal).

Yelp
I've returned and this time I got the goat pepper soup. It was amazing. I have been putting instant noodles in my pepper soups and they've been amazing. I also had beans stew and it is super spicy. Spicier than the goat pepper soup. I didn't want to stop eating it but I had to take breaks. I'll be coming here for my goat pepper soup fix.

Yelp
The food here was great ,my wife introduced me to this restaurant. We really enjoyed the jolif rice, with goat meat & egusi stew .The staff there was really nice. The head lady there that packs your food up ,she gives you really nice size portions of food. This has to be the best African Nigerian restaurant in the jamaica queens area.

Jerry P.

Yelp
Too pricey for frequent visits but a great find for exotic (but not too spicy) food. Servers have great knowlege of the food and are well trained. If you don't mind the noise, it's a great find for an upscale West African restaurant.

Yelp
This is probably one of the best Nigerian spots in Queens. Their food is fresh and they always get my order right. My husband and I order from this place regularly. The staff is very very friendly and that's another reason why I keep coming back here. A lot of African restaurants have nasty staff but not Africana. They are very nice and very helpful. I'm not Nigerian but I like their food and I sometimes need help with their menu or ordering/describing the food that I want. My go to here is the Edikaikong! OMG! I love this meal. Maybe because I like the mix of meat and spinach. I don't know but i really enjoy this dish. They do it really well. It comes with plantain and jollof rice. My husband always orders their mixed meat. He enjoys it and their portions are pretty generous. I usually get dodo and jollof rice which is also really good. I seriously have no complaints about this place. Their food is delicious. Overall, Africana is great place to get some Nigerian food in Queens. I wouldn't eat there because its usually really hot in there. They do have seating in there so you can eat in there but if you're picky like me, you'll pack it up and take it home.

Yelp
Uber takeout $60 had suya, meat pie( they substituted with fish pie without notification), acara, moi moi, one order edikakong mixed meat soup with yam . Everything was very good ,fresh and not crazy spicy for Nigerian. Perfect spice level for me. My biggest complaints was small portion for price , not enough soup sauce for my fufu and subbed meat pie with fish pie. My sister has fish allergy and I got meat pie for her. Lucky she only had small piece but that is DANGEROUS!The acara was a joke - 1 size of 1/2 pinky for $2. And very stingy on fufu amount-size for a child. I thought since I was getting 2 fufu -soup would be worth price of $30 in size and enough for 2 people. It seems like you can get cheaper lunch prices in the store so if I tried again would be to takeout and see if value is better . But for takeout the price and portions are really outrageous . Granted this is my first Queens african restaurant. I have eaten usually in Manhattan and Brooklyn with much more reasonable price and quantities.

Yelp
I always leave here in a happy food coma. Authentic real Nigerian cuisine. Only the best.

Yelp
The food is very good but service is so-so. The ladies working there are a bit curt. The food was ready quickly tho. Prices are fair since the quantity is generous. Good for food to go.
google avatar

Brenda R.

Yelp
Friendly staff. However, a bit disappointed by the dryness of the food. I guess I expected it to be fresh and juicy but the goat stew was dry and too chewy. I was hoping for goat that fell off the bone.
google avatar

Keke R.

Yelp
The food was really good. I had the Jollof rice and the goat meat. Very spicy but the taste was great. They have seats just in case you want to eat there and a sink in the dinner area just do you can wash you hands. The owner was really sweet as well.

Yelp
My go-to for delivery or pick up. I recommend the Jollof and goat meat stew. It is spicy but has just the right kick. I also enjoy their plantain and beans stew. I always order for extra plantain because the order without extra only comes with 4-5 plantains and if you're a plantain lover, you will want the extra.

Yelp
Amazing tasting food along with phone customer service and clean, tidy food packaging

Yelp
I enjoyed the food. Knowledgeable staff if you do not fully recognize ingredients. Zobo fan. Spicy and flavorful menu. No complaints from me

Yelp
Am still a little iffy about this place however I would try it again;Had it in my list to check out for quite some time and seeing that Anthony Bourdain came here, I had to see what it was about . I got the beef stew, Spinach and yam ball. I've had Nigerian food before so I kind of knew what to expect. For those looking tender beef would have an issue with the tough meat texture. None the less it was good to me. Loved the Spanish and yam ball. Would return to try their other food options.

Yelp
The food was horrible! The eguisi was tasting old and rancid!! The okra soup was ok!!

Yelp
Best African food you can get delivered near Central Queens/South Queens. This place serves Nigerian cuisine. The food is tasty, and orders are delivered correct and on-time. I really like this place and am glad its in the neighborhood. However, I am totally disappointed that there are not more choices for African Cuisine in Central and South Queens, like what's really going on?! I can't get a delivery of Ethiopian cuisine by me if my life depended on it, and I have to trek to BK or Harlem if I want some, which is insane, and unacceptable!

Yelp
Food was delicious we traveled all the way from Suffolk County. Thank you for the amazing eats.

Yelp
Ate here last summer when I was doing an program at nearby hospital. I don't live near but a colleague wanted to show me some good food. Place is small but typical size for an African restaurant. Service wasn't the fastest but I think because we were hungry we noticed it more. Cant remember all we had but it was good and we also ordered to go. I think prices were on the higher side but I don't eat this stuff everyday so it was okay. Hoping to return one day.

Yelp
Best Nigerian food in Queens! Food always taste fresh and authentic. Good ukazi soup and jollof rice.

Food was amazing! I had the Rice and stew, soup. I had left overs and took it to lunch the next day, I felt like it was tastier the next day! Lol will def come back.

Yelp
We enjoy experiencing new culinary experiences quite often - we are not new at this. This time we picked Africana because it was recommended by Anthony Bourdain. With an adventurous spirit we walked into Africana. From the moment we walked in we were treated like outsiders. The place was filthy. It took 20 minutes for the waitress to finally come over. No menu. No Water. No smile. Just "What will it be" We got an eye roll when we asked for a menu. She spoke so low and with such a thick accent - we were clearly having trouble understanding her. We just yessed her a few times and hoped for the best. The food was deplorable. Expect goat meat cooked very poorly. The only cool thing about the whole experience was when we ate the appetizer with our hands. We felt let down. This was a complete waste of our time. Leave this jewel alone.

Yelp
Although I absolutely love African cuisine this place is THE worst in terms of customer service. The food is good but they fail horribly in the hospitality area. My advise is to treat EVERY customer with respect and be open to constructive criticism. If I point out that a price needed to be updated on YOUR menu to reflect what your charging me, FIX IT! Instead the owner acts like she has a chip on her shoulder from me voicing my opinion. I can easily spend my money elsewhere. Businesses like hers need to realize that without customers you have no business. We need to do Better. Unbelievable!
google avatar

Dominique C.

Yelp
Nice small neighborhood restaurant. The food is excellent but pricey, I cant figure why. But I see its a trend among these African spots to beat you over your head for a little culture in the hood
google avatar

Maggie F.

Yelp
Saw this restaurant and I decided to give it a try since I didn't feel like driving to Brooklyn to get good Nigerian food. Small space, but the food actually surprised me. It was good! Better than some of the other Nigerian restaurants in the Queens area and at a reasonable price. The owner is also very polite. This restaurant definitely satisfied my craving for home cooked Nigerian food.

Israel B.

Yelp
They are fast to serve you just know that don't expect respect at this place and if you can don't eat the meat oh and the price of the food change according to there mood I swear

Yelp
Wonderful home style Nigerian food.
