Queens Rapper Anik Khan Shares His Favorite NYC Restaurants

"This Bengali spot is just a few blocks from Villa Brazil on the border of Astoria and Dutch Kills. They do tea, snacks, and of course sweets, but Khan recommends diving deep into the menu. “I know you’ve had Indian cuisine,” he says, “but India is a subcontinent with an array of cultures and cuisines. To the east, you’ll find a country called Bangladesh which happens to be my birthplace! Our food is extremely different from the Indian cuisine you find in most restaurants. We focus more on stews, stir fries, and fish. Mustard oil is our best friend and we use it on everything. Check out Aladdin—one of the oldest and best Bangladeshi restaurants in the city. Get the chicken roll as an appetizer, the curry beef, ANY of the fresh fish available that day, and don’t forget the tehari! I actually think it’s better than biryani.”" - chris mohney

Google
They have a great variety of Bangladeshi sweets, snacks and entrees. I just tried their piyaju and chicken samosa which were really tasty

Michael

Google
Tastes traditional. If i was Bengali then I would say tastes like home. I feel like Sweet little balls of deliciousness. The orange yogurt, delicious tangy flavor perfect to pair with the little delicious brown balls. A perfect pair.

ADI SHARIF

Google
Definitely top tier authentic Bangali food , service is fantastic. Their Kacchi and Khichuri taste unreal in a good way . Morog pulau was disappointing, plain inedible and the restaurant environment isnt really fine dining, it is as expected in a Bangla restaurant . One complaint I have is, what's up with the salad ? Just one slice of cucumber and piece of green chili? Bhuh we are Bangalis ..😁

md joy

Google
I ordered the beef Tehri. it’s totally disgusting. no taste nothing the rice also like mass.🤮🤢🤮 I wish I will not come next time

Abu Rustam

Google
Just went to this restaurant with a five members family and my son found a baby cockroach in the chickpeas (buter dal) with beef curry. We informed the management and left the restaurant since we totally lost our appetite to continue to eat there!!! Do not recommend to anyone ☹️

Jaz Khan

Google
Went there around lunch time and had kolija (liver and potato) shingara and parota with beef curry, deem bhaji, and lotpoti. The shingara had a lot more liver pieces than potatoes. The flavor was okay.

Google
Food was so good ! A bit too oily for me, yet loved the taste. Tasted like authentic biye barir morog pulao 😭❤️

Google
The reason I am going for 4* is the customer service. Otherwise for the food I would like to give them 10* the best Bengali restaurant in NYC no doubt. 1. Kachi is very good. Little pricey. $14 2. Khichuri with chicken or goat or any curry very good. And many more. Very good food.

Tanjim A.

Yelp
Food is good. I often go there for their tea and snacks! They have the best tea and chingri pakoras. Their biriyani is pretty good too.

Yelp
I've noticed the one star reviewer, MoJur was complaining about shingras turning into joosish!? I've believe in 1994, it was $1 but in 2023, it has lotsa live and less potatoes $3 with ketchup Steep increase , but it's better than McDonald and I support local business

Yelp
I recently visited Aladdin Sweets & Restaurant at Astoria and bought some Chicken Samosa, Beef Shami Kabab, and Koliza Shingara. Unfortunately, my experience left much to be desired, and I must say that I was thoroughly disappointed. Firstly, the Samosa was a letdown. It tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. The outer pastry was stale, and the filling lacked flavor and freshness. It felt like I was eating something that had lost its original appeal. The Shami Kabab didn't fare much better. They were dry and lacked the usual tenderness and succulence that one expects from a good Shami Kabab. The seasoning was also off, making them taste quite bland. As for the Koliza Shingara, they need more care or attention to quality. Considering the reputation Aladdin Sweets & Restaurant at Astoria, I expected much better. Unfortunately, my experience with their items left me with a strong sense of dissatisfaction. I hope they can improve the quality of their food in the future because as it stands.

Yelp
3.75/5: Brought here by Bengali friends, so this is authentic and the real deal! This is my first time trying Bengali food, so I wasn't expecting much, but I definitely enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I really can't remember the names of the dishes we tried but there were two different types of beef and rice dishes. One seemed to be a beef biryani that I realllllly loved. The rice was sooo fluffy and good, and the beef cubes were quite tender and aromatic. Second beef dish was the curry, and while it tasted like a Malaysian rendang beef to me, the yellow rice that came with this was more starchy and reminiscent of the salted egg rice in Chinese "zongzi". Was heavier than the other rice, but also good in terms of flavor. Last rice dish came with what was described as a roast chicken leg. It was smothered with this onion garlicky sauce on top. Least favorite of the meal, as the chicken piece I received was quite dry. Favorite was the appetizer: chicken samosas! Best samosas I've had and I normally don't eat this type of stuff but I would gladly come back to get it again. Extremely thin and crispy wrapper and the meat inside was super juicy that it was oozing out onto my plate already. Finally, bengali yogurt: definitely tasted the yogurt aspect of this, but also could've easily been the custard filling of a tart. Aesthetically, I thought it was Thai ice cream at first

Yelp
Everytime you return, the price increases just a bit Inflation seems to finally be trickling into every business. It's a shame but their samosas and purri are bangin

Lisa I.

Yelp
I feel like they are not able to maintain the quality anymore. Of course price went up and that is everywhere but I didn't find taste like before. Recently somosa is MIA. Biriyani doesn't taste like before. Well I hope they come back with quality food again.
google avatar

Shianti B.

Yelp
Best chicken samosa I ever had! The server was very quick and the samosas were fresh. The Samosa taste very fresh and was season nicely it had onions and herbs and it was just very tasty. This place is very big and clean. They have other food options such as gold chicken and vegetarian options. They also sell sweets at the shop. Even though I only had chicken samosas I look forward to coming back. Definitely go for the chicken samosas so they also give you a small thing of Tamarind sauce which is amazing!

Yelp
I had a visit that place after long time . I know that place since 1993 when they open that restaurant. Today I took my family to the Resturent for dinner. I order chicken Bryani and roast Polaw. Both order was 2 plate. Both look old food . I couldn't see any meat in chicken bryani , few broken piece . I was so much disappointed and unhappy. I knew that restaurant for a long time . Now I see why they don't have Customer like before . I also order some appetizers. They are ok . I don't recommend anyone anymore. I am one of the very unhappy customer. They increase the price but bring down the food quality .

Yelp
I've been eating here since 1994. Either the chef changed, or they became too greedy. Most of the times the curries have very little gravy when I order to take out! It was never like this, but opposite. I always got generous servings. Now I'm going to talk about the liver (kolija) shingara. Before the shingara had lots of liver in it, and may be 1-3 pieces of potatoes. It was delicious. Now the shingara became like Israel! Now it has more potatoes, and few pieces of liver. Just how Israel took over Palestine, the potatoes took over the livers.

Farzana I.

Yelp
Worth a drive to Queens just for the Chicken rolls. I'm solely giving this place 5 stars just for the chickens roll. Try it and thank me later lol. Just make sure to call beforehand and see if they have them cause I hear they sell out fast.

Yelp
Passed by this place so many times in Astoria/ LIC and finally one day went in with a friend. When it comes to food the taste for the dishes we had it was great! Very flavorful dishes. The Cons: * they use all styrofoam and single use throw away cups, plates and utensils! Talk about all that waste! There isn't much service, it looks more like a fast casual joint where you order what you want from the hot buffet, pay and then sit down. I was a little confused about the layout and order of operation. We ordered several dishes but some were the half portion. What I thought wasn't cool is that the pricing for the half portions were not clearly written or displayed. He also didn't indicate the price at the time of order and said we can sit down and just pay later. Then a staff member came up and started pouring us water in plastic single use cups. I'm not into that, when you go into a place and are not sure if they are ripping you off and have a slight feeling they may potentially be upcharging you ?

Yelp
Awesome customer service. Food was so yummy. We ordered goat mutton, samosas, many sweet boxes, dal poori. Waiting to go back again.

Yelp
After attending a Yelp event, I was still hungry and needed a little something to fill me up. This one was still open late night so I randomly walked inside and grabbed a chicken patty from here. The man behind the counter was friendly and the restaurant was clean. Many people were inside eating (all men lol). They have sweets on display. Overall, this looks like a good place to grab a bite at night!

I B.

Yelp
If you are not bangladeshi/know the people in there they straight up will charge you different prices everytime you walk in the store. I have been going here for about a year and have noticed this enough times that i felt that i should post about it. I usually get the goat samosa with liver which is pretty good. But i cant stand how sometimes its 1.50, 3 dollars. Even sometimes i legit point at the menu with the prices and theyll give me some flat out lie and explain to me in broken english how its "not right".
google avatar

Aurora Q.

Yelp
Love this place. Uncontested Bangladeshi food in NYC as far as I am concerned. Get the kacchi on weekends, crunchy samosas every day and nothing beats their desserts. Malai jamun and balushahi are my faves.

Yelp
Last weekend was one of my closest gal pals birthdays. She didn't want to do anything because of a variety of reasons...but in true Stephy fashion, I'm not good at letting people be sad and mopey on the day commemorating their release from their mother's loins. Naturally this meant a weekend of partying. Our Saturday was somewhat responsible and our Sunday was a boozy brunch at a restaurant in LIC that was an insane disappointment and fun brewery hangs...but I'll get to that in another review... Okay, okay - I bet I know what you're thinking, "when is this chick going to get to Aladdin's?!" - welp, now is a better time than ever :). After Sunday's boozy brunch, LIC flea market and local craft brewery escapades we were absolutely spent and wanting to hop on my rooftop to check out that night's "Blood Moon" lunar eclipse (yep, it was that night) and so I demanded to spring for a can back to my apartment... After we hopped into a cab that didn't even have the light on (meaning that the poor guy was technically off of his shift) he mentioned really wanting tea and presumably being hungry...he offered my friend and I tea but we both gracefully declined. He hadn't turned on the meter and I kept him chatting...he then commented on the meter being off and asking if he could stop somewhere to pick up some tea and noms (he didn't say "noms" but GOD HOW I WISH HE WOULD HAVE, lol), I shrugged and said okay as my friend made a terrified face and commented at how she hoped we didn't get assaulted or raped...rape is never funny but this rando situation did feel like it could go 1 of 2 ways...1.) A thrilling Lifetime movie where sad things happen but the ladies emerge empowered and victorious or 2.) an SNL sketch where there's a good samaritan and some funny cab passengers - thankfully it went the way of the latter option ^_^. My gal pal, our new cabbie friend and I ended up being brought here. He asked us again if we were good and we both said we were and didn't want anything...even though I was starving because I hadn't eaten much all day and my brunch burger was in a box because that afternoon's LIC restaurant was stupid. Once we all piled up back into this guy's can he handed us over a bag that was just for us. My gal pal actually enjoyed her milky tea and we both enjoyed the ridiculously amazing biryani treats inside. There were chicken rolls, meat (and maybe potato? It was deeeelicious but hard to identify) samosas and these round things with pulled chicks inside...they were legit circle shaped empanadas (wheat shells, not corn). Everything was so amazingly flavorful, amazing and came with some awesome sauces...especially a sweet tamarind sauce that I could have consumed straight out of the little plastic cup! I even brought back 2 samosas to my boyfriend and he loved them. After looking over some of the Yell reviews, all these samosas and yummy fried circle shaped patties were only $1 a piece, that's freakin' awesomepants! Thank you so much random cab driver for introducing me to this place - I would absolutely return here again for some tasty fried biryani noms! #TwoThumbsUp * _________________________________________ * Cab driver also ran into like 3 of his buddies here and drove us to my apartment for only $10 cuz he didn't want to turn his meter on. Free food and a steep discount to be driven home? Only in Queens :').

Yelp
I went there the first time this Monday, the kabab and the chicken tikka was delicious. The Ala carte prices were very reasonable. I returned the next day and possibly will return there regularly for lunch since I do work in Astoria. However, I would like to see some half orders of Biriyani during lunch, they only server full orders and I think it is too much food for lunch!
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Really like the delicious food here and the crowd is all Bengali so you know you're getting authentic food. At the affordable prices too, I would definitely come back for the biryani and curry.
google avatar

Jóse A.

Yelp
Goat Curry, Chicken Somosa... coffee is always 10/10. Place is always good and workers are always nice.Chicken Samosas

Fariha K.

Yelp
Whenever my family and I are in the Astoria area, we stop by Aladdin to pick up some roast pulao. The roast pulao has been our favorite ever since we lived in Queens. We still like it but the quality has dropped. It is way more expensive now and it tasted better before. It's not horrible at all, it's just not AS tasty as it used to be. Nonetheless, if you're in the area try it out. Just don't be so picky on service.
google avatar

MandS R.

Yelp
Located next to Boishaki - another Bengali restaurant. Both are good, but Aladdin is famous for its Bengali desserts. It is open until 1 am and there are many Bangladeshi clientele. Only accepts CASH. Food is ordered off a posted menu, and the specials change daily...and if you go late, some of the entrees may be gone. Typical entree comes with dal, salad, and a small dessert as well as a tea. Food is good, but the sweets are fantastic! Close to Subway
google avatar

Rashid M.

Yelp
If you like sweets, this is a good place, but otherwise there's really nothing good to eat here. The iftar box is ok, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have nowhere else to it. The staff is not that friendly either.
google avatar

Sajid Z.

Yelp
The first Bangladeshi super restaurant in New York City. Located in Astoria, Queens- they have the best food you can imagine. Over the years they have cut portion sizes down as expenses increased but the quality has not gone down even a tad bit. Their sweet yogurt is awesome and Kachi-Biryani is off the hook. The food is very well made. I am a bit mad that they have increased prices for the lesser portion sizes. Sweets are good though so enjoy! Some food are mediocre, some are down right bad and some are the best. I have come here since I was a child. So my opinion may be biased since I am used to their cooking and long for it being so far away from it.
google avatar

Indra S.

Yelp
Every bite brings me back to my grandmother's home in Calcutta/Kolkata--the capital of the state of West Bengal in India. These are legitimate Bengali sweets. My father can testify to the sweets' authenticity and deliciousness. Bengali sweets may not be your thing but this is as real as it gets. Here is a translator. Like American donuts? Try cham cham. How about a donut like texture smothered in a sweet sugary sauce? Try rasgulla. Like pudding? Like kheer, which is rice pudding. Like sweet yogurt? Try mishti doi. Something new? Try "jilebi," an almost translucent, sticky, orangy pretzel.
google avatar

Mahbub H.

Yelp
It is clean but food not good what I accepting average. I would say fifty fifty. If you compare to other restaurants then you will see. Oh by the way service is very bad. I ordered roast polau it's take 22 minutes which is you can think how good service.
google avatar

anindita s.

Yelp
This is an update. The brother made sure we got the right food, and even gave us an extra curry as an apology. Their fish is always the best!! Especially the Koral mach, and the boal mach.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
Great meal - I got simple rice and veggies. Dahl was the most savory I've ever had. Same with the chicken samosa - had a small amount of spice and kick. Lots of flavor. It's inexpensive. Saw a lot of customers coming in and out. And you know it's good when there's a bunch of immigrants eating there in the middle of the afternoon!
google avatar

Niaz C.

Yelp
Chicken roll is amazing!!! Been coming here for years! Love the food, the atmosphere is inviting and service is great!
google avatar

Alif I.

Yelp
Very tasty and healthy Bangladeshi foods....especially the roshomalai....my favorite place for dine.
google avatar

Riya S.

Yelp
My favorite place. Everything they make is amazing. Don't forget to have their Samosa. They make the best samosa in Astoria!
google avatar

Wahed K.

Yelp
Umm... why is this place listed under Pizza?? This is one of the few proper Bangladeshi restaurants in NY. It's also close to my apt so I stop by here every now and then. There are some things here that are pretty good. My personal favorites are the liver samosas, chicken roll and chicken roast. These three things have been consistently good. The problem with the other dishes is that they are inconsistent. The curries, tehari and biryanis just about make the grade. I would rather make my own curry tbh. I think if you keep it simple here, you can have a good meal. I ordered chapati roti here once and it was very good. The aloo bhorta (mashed potato) can be pretty decent as well. When they decide to be generous with the mustard oil, it has good flavor. Sometimes they skimp on it, and it ends up being dry. I'm not a fan of the daal here. They water it down way too much. It's like daal lite. I always get take out here but they do have plenty of seating. However, eat here at your own risk. They don't really have a dedicated waiter as far as I could tell. Mostly people just sit, drink tea and talk about nothing. I would advise you to get carry out.
google avatar

K A.

Yelp
It is my most favorite Bangladeshi Restaurant in New York. There is an overwhelming consensus among my friends that this is the best Bangladeshi Restaurant in NYC. It has been serving the Bangladeshi community since the mid 90's. I have been a customer from the very beginning. They are very consistant with their food. One of our favorite is their Kacchi Biriyani (it only shows up as a daily special once or twice a week, not part of the regular menu). If you don't know what Kacchi Biriyani is, it is an old Dhaka tradition of cooking Biriyani. Goat meat is marinated over-night in yoghurt and spices than layer of rice is added topped with butter oil, milk, herbs, dried prunes & some other ingredients over the meat. Then it is slowly simmered for hours until the meat becomes so soft & tender that even a child can pick it off the bone effortlessly. This also makes the flavor of the meat and spices get soaked into the rice as it evaporates from the bottom meat layer and travels up through the top layer of rice. It is just wonderful. Almost everything I tried their, I liked with the exception of few. Their curry is purely Bangladeshi style and delicious. I am not a big dessert person, but their sweets are pretty good. Try the Chamcham and sweet Bangladeshi style yoghurt. And if you are into hot caffeinated drinks, don't forget to try their hot tea with milk. And they are open till 2 am, thats always a good thing.

Tanitra P.

Yelp
I've only had the samosa's here. They're ok nothing out of the ordinary. I've never actually sat down and ate here. Franky, the place creeps me out. Some evening only women go there with their families but most of the time there are a lot of South Asian men eating there.
google avatar

Tenny D.

Yelp
I love their sweets and samosas! Oh and the tea is amazing too! The sweets are relatively cheap compared to Jackson heights!
google avatar

Zinat M.

Yelp
It's actually bangladeshi food, with some indo-pak terms for marketing purposes.. you know how it is. The name of the restaurant has been taken from the original back in Bangladesh, which has a reputation as one of the best restaurant chains. They're trying to be like a global chain, opening up in Queens? They've not succeeded in that department, bc so many things are wrong w this place. The menu is incomplete, they're overpriced (for the portions they give), and they're not consistent. One day the haleem's good, the next it ain't. They're more reputable in the sweets department, and here they do not disappoint. Their gulab jamons, shondesh and rasgullahs are excellent. All I know is, when we happen to be in the neighborhood and get something from them, we're never completely satisfied. Samosas and chai will hit the spot though.
google avatar

Sarah D.

Yelp
Very good and authentic. I had heard the tea here was really good and that is correct. I might not be super versed in Bengali food however I know tea and this tea is legit and be careful it is dangerously hot. Not bad if you like to wait 20 for it to cool but just be careful.
google avatar

Wasiuzzaman D.

Yelp
Best cup of Bangladeshi TEA that I've ever had. If you're feeling a little hungry and just wants us to snack on something I would recommend going there. Their chicken patis and chicken roll are off the guck. They also have variety of sweets. Check me out.
google avatar

Aslan A.

Yelp
I went there with my brother today. Food was old. It was heated by microwave. The egg inside the food was cold. Meat was not cooked well. When we informed them about the quality of the food they got upset. We could not eat the food and had to go to another resturant.

John W.

Yelp
Everything is excellent and the chicken samosas are like crack. I've been told it's quite authentic. Even if it isn't, it's f***king delicious so who cares.
google avatar

Mo N.

Yelp
I've had my share of experience with south asian food, and this isn't what I would consider top of the crop. The biryanis are bland (seriously, put some more flavor into it!!) and the curries are painfully oily. However, I appreciate their portions and the fact that the complimentary salad is good. I do, however, like their chicken rolls, samosas, and daal (lentil soup thingy) quite a bit. However, the reason I can't help but come back here are their sweets. The sandesh (i think it's called?) and rasmalai are to DIE for. Honestly, I don't think I have tasted better south asian sweets elsewhere. The three stars they get are for their snacks and sweets. Skip the meal, if you can.
google avatar

Ehab A.

Yelp
I went there with my brother, we ordered beryani ,the rice was soggi ,the was so tough ,it was heated in microwave ,when we complained they ignored us so we left half of the dish and went to pay and the guy behind the counter was angry from us for some reason ,we were the ones that should be angry ,so never gonna go there again.

Marin R.

Yelp
My brother used to bring samosas from this spot all the time when I was younger. They were absolutely delicious and well seasoned, their samosas were different from others. I was intrigued and wanted to see this place and of course I was craving samosas, so about two months ago I was around Astoria and finally decided to go in person. The place was clean and the customer service was great. They were out of samosas boy was I disappointed but I decided to try their other dishes and I got the morog pulao and tried their chai and they were both really satisfying. I would say this spot has the best chai and they are far better then the spots in Jackson heights.
google avatar

Mst S.

Yelp
HORRIBLE, First of all they took forever with their food. Secondly when I asked them they started to yell. Thirdly the food was horrible and there was hair in the food. I would not recommend this place. Please don't waste your time here.

R M.

Yelp
Without doubt, the most authentic Bengali restaurant in New York City. I cannot count how many times I dropped by this place to get the flavor of my motherland. If you are away from home and miss your favorite curry or snacks this is the place to visit. Over the years I've tried almost everything they make - all delicious. Even if they cannot serve you with the exact taste of your mother's home made dishes I promise they would come close, they won't frustrate you. As I'm about to leave NY in a couple of months I wonder where I would find another "Aladdin" that would live up to its standards.
google avatar

Raz M.

Yelp
Home coked food. Tastes 100% Bengali. Great price and easy to get to via N or Q train. I love this place!

Mary H.

Yelp
food is great, vegetable samosa and rice with veggies were simple yet fulfilling. I believe my favorite was the dessert, rosmalai and roso gola.
google avatar

fayza a.

Yelp
They are only getting four stars because their sweets rock. If you want to eat authentic Bengali sweets go here. My favorites are Chom choms, doi (yogurt) and rosh malai. Get a cup of chai while you are at it. The actual food is mediocre.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
The food is really authentic and sooo good. The sweets are also excellent. I highly recommend the food here. The vibe is really casual. The chicken rolls are AMAZING. Their samosas are really good too.
google avatar

Omar S.

Yelp
Goat biryani cost 12 dollars! The rice was soggy and the meat wasn't cleaned properly. Inside of the restaurant smells like a toilet. Stay away!!
