"Alfred’s Steakhouse, which first opened in 1928, is temporarily closed for a remodel. Owner Al Petri is adding new features to the dining room, which already received a refresh in 2015 when it was handed to Daniel Patterson’s restaurant group. Petri and family regained majority ownership last year and aim to reach the restaurant's 100th anniversary." - Caleb Pershan

"Al Petri, whose family ran Alfred’s Steakhouse until he sold to Daniel Patterson’s Alta Group in 2015, wants to see the now 90-year-old institution reach 100. That’s why he’s returned, at least partially, from retirement in rural Washington to reopen Alfred’s. It’s back tomorrow, December 5, with a new fixed price menu format at 659 Merchant Street." - Caleb Pershan

"Alfred’s Steakhouse has closed temporarily and a representative for the restaurant is unable to say when it will reopen. According to reservations site OpenTable, no tables at Alfred’s are available until June 20. The restaurant representative did not provide a reason for the closure. The city’s oldest steak establishment, Alfred’s opened in 1928 and has endeavored to change as little as possible since then. Daniel Patterson’s Alta Group took over ownership in 2016 and revamped the place slightly, adding a coat of fresh red paint and more grass-fed beef to its menu with the overall goal of preserving the historic business. Alfred’s closed for about six weeks in 2016 during that ownership shuffle, and then again for several months in 2017 after a two-alarm fire did minor damage to the space. The blaze mostly burned the basement beneath the restaurant, but did cause some smoke damage. The restaurant took the closure as an opportunity to revisit its menu again, adding fresh pastas when it reopened last June. Eater SF awaits further details on the current closure, and will update this post as necessary." - Caleb Pershan

Good service and excellent food. Love oysters and Alfred's cut here!

FABulous! : ) We had a huge group (35+) and booked the private dining area on the bottom floor. The service was superb, the food was delicious, the wine was wonderful, and the ambiance was perfect. The group all loved it. Nice bar upstairs as well! I would highly recommend Alfred's Steakhouse for any event, friend/family dinner, or intimate night out. Thanks so much to the Alfred's team for taking such great care of us and providing an exceptional experience for our guests.

A shadow of its former glory. I've been frequenting Alfred's for over a decade. The excellence of their Manhattan's and Old Fashion's was diminished a year ago. Then the management changed hands, the entire staff (which had worked there for decades) left. Recently it was re-opened following a fire. The decor is largely unchanged (bathrooms were overhauled without the classic martini wallpaper). But the service is terrible, the meat isn't nearly as good as it was and not worth its price, several menu favorites are gone. Alfred's is dead to me. If you've never been, you'll find this to be a place that is certainly "above average", but long time patrons will notice that the magnificent "old world" spark that Alfred's maintained is now, officially, burned out.

WOW! I have read some of the reviews and am shocked. I've been frequenting Alfred's since I was a young lad. This is one of the premier restaurants in the City. The steaks are incredible. They make home made ravioli. The bar is renown for holding top whiskey. I normally have my dinner at the bar and the service has always been exceptional. There's one thing I cannot stand and that's an arrogant, inattentive barkeep and I have never seen that at Alfred's. The barkeep has always been top notch. This is one of the few joints around where they actually know how to make a proper martini. I personally know the owner, Marco. He's a consummate gentleman raised in the restaurant business. If you want fast food this isn't the place to come to. Enjoy your experience at Alfred's. Don't rush it. Let Marco and his crew take care of you and I promise, you will have an enjoyable evening.

Went to Alfred's with my husband for a dining experience and was disappointed. The decor is fabulous and sets the stage for a great meal. We ordered our steak medium rare and it came well done, chewy and full of gristle. We also had to ask for a steak knives. Then, the server added an 18% gratuity to our bill. We asked and she said it was automatic there. What?!?! There was just two of us so I'm not sure why it is automatic. Ugh, I had such high hopes.

The flavor of the steak is great. The price for the entire meal, which includes two sides almost seemed low for the amount of food I received. I had the Chicago ribeye. The marbling was perfect and there weren't huge globs of fat. The only improvement would be on the shared starter, which was cheese, olives, etc. The quality wasn't that great and I could have done without it.

The place smelled like a pet store or a rodent infested house when we stepped in. I wanted to leave, but we stayed. The crab cakes were great, but the steaks were of average to poor quality. The texture was poor and the flavor lacking. It is in a cool, tucked away location and the atmosphere of an old school steakhouse. Great if you are more interested in drinking Frank Sinatra style than the food. Seriously, the hard liquor offering is impressive for this day in age. Skip this unless you are just trying to avoid a chain.

Good wine list. Excellent service. Bone in ribeye (Alfred ' s cut) was thin and bland. Definitely not worth the $70. Side of steak fries weren't steak fries...Just regular fries. I've had better at Longhorn. The dessert service felt cheap. The cheesecake portion was smaller than a Twinkie and had no crust. Go for the drinks and atmosphere . The food was unimpressive.
