Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles Opening This Summer in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"The first San Diego restaurant for soul food icon Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles is well and truly on its way to Barrio Logan where it’s currently on pace to open by mid-to-late summer. This is the chain’s eighth location and the biggest yet for founder Herb Hudson, who launched his first Roscoe’s in 1975. “My goal is to provide as much employment as I can; the more opportunities I create the more fulfilled I am,” Hudson shared with Eater. “San Diego is one of the best markets in the nation and of course everybody needs a Roscoe’s. The city is beautiful, almost enchanting, the people are laid back and there is a calm and peace about this city; when we were encouraged to bring Roscoe’s here, we came, we saw, and we conquered.” Hudson, who is known for purchasing the land for all of his properties, worked with Coldwell Banker’s Adolfo Moreno to buy the National Avenue site. “After years of anticipation, it’s exciting to see Herb and the Roscoe’s family finally making huge progress in Barrio Logan,” said Moreno. “I look forward to their success and supporting them with this and other projects that we’re looking at for San Diego.” Roscoe’s rep Diane Vara tells Eater that building plans have been approved and the foundation of the 6,000-square-foot restaurant has been laid; the Barrio Logan outpost will have a rooftop dining deck as well as its own parking lot. Though it’ll offer its signature Southern classics, the chain is also planning to roll out new dishes. Fulfilling a longstanding customer request, chicken tenders were recently added to the menu. Vara says that Roscoe’s will continue to expand; the company is currently eyeing properties in Palm Springs as well as Northern California." - Candice Woo

Best Restaurants in City Heights | Eater San Diego

"Tucked inside Donut Star at Fairmount and University Avenues, Ali’s chicken hits the trifecta of craveability: tender (despite being breast meat), flavorful (seasoned with a bit of a kick but not to the point where it burns), and golden (because that also matters, right?). The kitchen, which is halal, has other Southern essentials like mac and cheese and cheesy shrimp and grits and waffles, plus Thai Tea and Ali’s fries, topped with cheese sauce, corn pico, diced chicken and chipotle mayo, because why not? Sauces, 50 cents each, include herb mayo, chipotle mayo, Ali sauce and coconut syrup. That syrup, by the way — it’s transformative."

Google
The best chicken and waffles I’ve ever had! First time I had these was over pandemic when we ordered for take out. It took over an hour but when we opened the box, I was surprised that the waffles were not soggy from all the steam. It retain its texture, the flavor was semi sweet and I didn’t need to use syrup. That’s how I like my waffles and to me, that’s a major bonus. The chicken was juicy even though it’s white meat. The flavor in the breading was on point as far as spice levels. Fast forward, post pandemic, we’ve revisited several times and this past weekend, it was just how I remembered it. The location shares a space with the donut shop. Parking in that lot is tight, you would be lucky if you found one. It’s also not the best area. There are a few tables inside to dine in. We ate it fresh and took 30 minutes for our order to come out. Recommend to call in your order. Prices are reasonable, the combo #1 came with 2 tenders, waffle or fries and a side. The mac and cheese wasn’t super creamy. It was a perfect mix of cheddar and Parmesan. Ali’s fries were also a nice treat. Similar to carne asada fries with all the toppings. We got chicken instead of shrimp. The spicy chicken sandwich was not spicy. They said next time, to let them know that we want it higher than Thai spice I also got sambusas, which are similar to empanadas or samosas but different shape. Choice of filling, I got savory. This was not my favorite because of the dried texture. The chicken curry just needed dipping sauce. Overall, we would come back here again and again.

Google
Food is so good I had to come and leave a review through my job’s email! Awesome location with plenty of options. I got the Original Chicken Sandwich combo & it never disappoints. Definitely recommend getting it with their Ali’s Sauce. A must visit in City Heights. ✨

Google
Incredible comfort food and great vibes! Ali’s Chicken and Waffles hit the spot! The chicken was crispy, juicy, and perfectly seasoned, while the waffles were soft, buttery, and just the right amount of sweet. The combo is seriously addictive. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and the portions were generous. Whether you’re grabbing brunch or a late-night bite, this place delivers on flavor and hospitality. Definitely coming back!

Google
Simply the best. Limited menu. Just Chicken and dipping sauce. Same ideal motip as Raisin Cane Chick Fil a I love all sauce especially Coconut Sauce. Chicken tender was juicy and crunchy spice cover. Thai tea was good.

Google
The best chicken sandwich in San Diego. The spicy is seriously good. We love their mac and cheese, and fries. First time trying a waffle and chicken here and I must say that was great too. Pro tip: order online via toast app, so that your food is ready upon arrival. Also, It's so good that you might want to order more than 1 sandwich per person ;)

Google
Second time here and it was just as good as the first time. Biggest strips in San Diego! Well seasoned and tasty. Black Owned ✊🏿

Google
Used to be reliable and a joy to order from but the last few times my order was missing things such as pickles, the correct sauce, napkins. Also some days the chicken breading is very dark and greasy like the oil needs to be changed, the collard greens were burnt and way too garlicky it was bitter. Not sure what is going on with the kitchen. Double check your order.

Google
THE BEST chicken and waffles I’ve ever had, tender, seasoned chicken, soft waffles, and amazing sauces to top it off. You NEED to get extra coconut syrup, it takes it to a whole other level. Don’t forget about the fries, they are also seasoned perfectly and top any fast food restaurant. If you haven’t been here, I’m so sorry, you have not experienced life yet. I only come down to San Diego once a year, and this is a must stop. Plus this location is joined with a donut star, which has some of the best donuts I’ve had too! Only downside is that it’s a small shop, so they ran out of utensils when we were there.

Yelp
Cheesy grits are buttery, waffles are soft and crunchy at right places, chicken is out of this world! Each homemade sauce is so special, my favorite is the coconut syrup. Great prices, amazing food, crappy location lol but it'll be alright.

Yelp
I'm a returning customer at Ali's, and every time I'm in the area and craving a chicken sandwich, I just have to stop by. I've tried a bunch of their combos--chicken, waffles, fries--and both the Original and Home Chicken Sandwiches. Everything's been great, but the Home Chicken Sandwich is hands down my favorite. There's just something about that buttermilk fried chicken covered in East-African clarified butter, herbed mayo, and tomato slices that hits different every time. If I had one gripe, it's that they could be more generous with the sauces. Their special sauces cost extra, and even with the ketchup, they don't give you much. Last time I ordered a sandwich and fries to go, I barely got any ketchup. I should've asked for more, but I didn't realize until after I picked up my order. Overall, the food's always on point, and I'll definitely keep coming back whenever the cravings hit!

Yelp
Chicken and Waffles are criminally too good here. The chicken is really juicy and savory, with a nice mix of sweetness from the waffles. It's a perfect combination. The fries are alright, just wished they were more seasoned! Not fully a 5-star review because sometimes my orders do get messed up, but that's no big deal as they do make up for themselves all the time! Great restaurant that is seated next to a great donut shop! 4/5.

Yelp
Ali's Chicken & Waffles is a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant adjacent to a donut shop in the heart of City Heights. They have a small parking lot and some street parking nearby. Inside, they have 4-5 tables that can seat up to 2 people, so getting food to go seems to be a better idea. Their most popular dishes include a 2 piece tender and waffle combo and the Home Chicken Sandwich. I went with the Home Chicken Sandwich combo, which comes with fries and a drink. The home chicken sandwich was decent; the chicken was seasoned very well, and comes with a small dollop of mayonnaise. My only cons are that it's basically a slider (maybe the size of my palm) and does not come with any slaw or pickles like many other chicken sandwiches do. Their fries were decent, thin cut and fried to order. I went with the Ali sauce, which seemed to be a combination of mayo, ketchup, and relish - basically In-n-Out animal sauce. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I'd definitely order more if I go there again.

Yelp
I really like this place! Ordered twice on DoorDash and although one of my items was wrong, the food itself was well seasoned and prepared perfectly even through transport. Definitely a must try!

Yelp
Really good food i always get it to go the inside is shared with a donut shop so not much room. But the food is amazing and quick to take out.

Yelp
Delicious!! Delicious fried chicken sandwich. Nice, juicy breast fried crispy and seasoned extremely well. Food made fresh. Waffles were good. Light, fluffy not to dense plus buttery. All sauces are an additional costs. One sauce per order/plate. Reasonably priced. Limited parking. Average to slow customer service.

Yelp
Still amazing as ever to be honest I've been here so many times and it has always remained so fresh and tasty. This chicken is the best from San Diego so this if my go to when I'm craving chicken. The service is decent ,.. waiting time varies depending on the day and time. The cashiers are kind too. There's a donut shop too inside that only takes cash in case you want dessert. The ambience is okay since there's a lot of tweekers outside.

Yelp
First impressions: - Small parking lot in front - Card accepted here - Shares a space with a donut shop - Only 3 tables I ordered a combo #2 and thai tea with coconut milk. Their thai tea was very tasty (and the staff was accommodating about my request for less ice, which I appreciated). And the chicken in the combo 2 was juicy with a thin coating of flavorful breading! Ali's sauce (comes with combo) was the perfect pairing for the chicken. Fries were good, though I found the waffle to be kind of dense for my liking. Their coconut syrup (also provided) is a tasty addition though.

Yelp
Really good hole in the wall spot for a solid chicken sandwich at an affordable price. Small parking lot in front shared by multiple businesses, the inside is half a donut shop and half Ali's. It seems they cook everything fresh so takes a few mins for your order to be ready. Had the classic chicken sandwich which was crispy, juicy, and priced very well. Not the largest sandwich in the world but did the trick. Hash browns were also good and affordable, similar to McDonald's in the patty style. Only a couple spots to sit so best for take out. For the price this is solid quality for money, would go again!

Yelp
Alis chicken has my heart. I recommend the spicy chicken, the waffles, and the Mac and cheese. Be sure to order online so it can be ready for you when you arrive. I am So glad good food exists somewhere around here!

Yelp
Food is absolutely amazing !!! Best chicken waffles I ate in San Diego . The chicken was tender seasoning was perfect . Fries delicious and chicken sandwich does have a lil kick if you order spicy. I was not a fan of the Mac but it was okay. Service was great with suggestions and very polite . It's share the building with a donut shop but it's very clean if you choose to eat in .
google avatar

Yelp
Grits were bland, didn't really see the need to add corn to the grits, shrimp were ok. Hash browns were soooooooo greasy. Chicken sandwich was ok, best thing out of everything for sure though. Customer service was nice but the food wasn't good to me.

Yelp
Highly highly recommend checking this place out. It's shared inside with a donut shop. A great pair. The chicken here is so nicely done. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, surprisingly juicy for white meat. The waffle was delicious - really nice crisp outer layer. But moist doughy inside. Good flavor. The super soft bun. I believe it was brioche. Delicious. The chicken sandwich was delicious. Ali sauce - kinda like a thousand island dressing. Super good. Service was fantastic. Super friendly and down to earth. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Best chicken and waffles I've had in San Diego, recommend you guys try their home sauce (Ali sauce) fries and Mac and cheese were great too. Will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
My grandkids love chicken and waffles so I went along with their suggestion to try this place. Omg. It was so good! It's in nondescript place, low key so you almost miss it. But i understand why so many people like it. The fried chicken is so deliciously crispy and flavors that pop add to that saltiness the sweet toppings on the waffles and it is an explosion of flavors. The young man who helped us was super friendly and offered good recommendations. We'll be going back!

Yelp
We first tried Ali's Chicken and Waffles a couple weeks back. My brother had ordered some via Uber eats and he mentioned that it was delicious!! Fast forward a few weeks and I happen to have a doctors appointment nearby. I was so happy to finally try Ali's chicken and waffles and to be honest, the food surpassed all my expectations. I had heard the food was delicious, but dayuuum!!!! We ordered two #2s- 2 chicken strips, one waffle and fries. The meal comes with the choice of one sauce-we picked Ali's sauce, and because our meals came with waffles, coconut sauce is included. We also added two Thai teas. Chicken is crispy, perfectly fried, juicy, and the seasoning and crunchy goodness is chefs kiss! The fries are delicious and the waffle is light and delicious-highly recommend you use the coconut sauce on your waffle. Sorry no pictures, the food smelled so good I was too busy eating, highly recommend Ali's chicken and waffles!!

Yelp
Food is killer, tastes so good and is super filling. Got the Cluckfast Burrito and the Chick-in-Waffles and both were delicious. The honey mustard in the waffle was a pleasant surprise and the halal bacon in the cluckfast burrito was super tender and juicy. Service was great and the guy taking our order was kind and helpful with recommendations. Cute little dining area next to a donut shop, 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
Had an incredible takeout experience tonight! The Shrimp Combo with waffle and fries was a savory delight, and the spicy chicken sandwich, Thai tea--absolutely delicious. Freshness was a highlight. Friendly customer service, too! Plus, an honorable mention for the fantastic donut shop sharing the space. Yummy treats and top-notch customer service (just note, it's cash only, but there's an ATM inside). Can't wait to return!
google avatar

Shaianne P.

Yelp
Wow! I really love the chicken. I ordered the Combo #1 which included 2 pieces of chicken and a waffle! The only thing I want to complain about is the waffle - it was thick and fluffy which I appreciated... but it was soggy. I will say, I didn't get to go here in person (my boyfriend picked up for me) so maybe that contributes to the soggy waffle? Would like to try again!
google avatar

Alissa T.

Yelp
Wow!! I saw that Ali's Chicken and Waffles won for best fries in San Diego so I had to check it out! Absolutely amazing!! My husband got the chicken sandwich, which he loved. I got combo 3, and it was incredible!! It came with this really delicious syrup so I made my own mini chicken and waffle bites. The chicken was so tender, the waffle was amazing, the syrup was great--all in all, both meals were fantastic meal, and we will be back. The service was also great. They were super helpful when we were figuring out what to order. We also got an Apple fritter from the donut shop for some dessert. It was also incredible! Ali's chicken and waffles is solid. It's now our go to for fried chicken. A lot of fried chicken is really heavy and greasy--not this place! I probably can't call it "healthy fried chicken"--but the quality was superior to than anything else I've tried in San Diego. Highly recommend!

Annie C.

Yelp
This place was bomb, at least their order of chicken and waffles. For the sauce i chose the coconut one and also the house one and u really should try both. If i HAD to pick one its be the house one but pls try both. He described it as an in n out spread sauce with a kick to it and i was hesitant about it since im not a fan but it was really good Idk about parking i walked. Customer service was good the day i went. Like a mexican dude in his 20s. It did get busy after we got out order tho. About a 15 min wait for us but then a 40min wait for everyone else. Overall great lil place
google avatar

Yelp
Everything I've tried from Ali's has been excellent. I love the tea and get that as my drink every time in the largest size I can order. For my meal, I usually mix it up. Their sandwiches are great, and so are their chicken tenders. One day I got their shrimp & grits - also excellent! It's a weird location to get to. I appreciate that I can order in advance online and then make a quick stop to pick it up instead of waiting for it after ordering onsite. There isn't really a whole lot of room to sit and eat. It's a quick meal, so you can make it work if needed. I can't wait to come back for more!
google avatar

Erwin S.

Yelp
Above average chicken & waffles, but not extraordinary. Went here on a late Sunday morning, after ordering online. Tried the shrimp & grits and combo #3 (chicken strips, waffle and fries). The shrimp were seasoned really well, and were very tasty. The grits were a little bland for my liking. For the chicken, again not the flavor bomb that I was expecting. The fries and waffle were good, but the tastiest items were the condiments. The chipotle mayo is a must for chicken dipping, and the coconut syrup is delicious on the waffle. Would probably frequent Ali's if I lived in the area, but wouldn't drive across the city again for a craving. Area is a little sketch as well.

Yelp
Slightly better sauce than chicken :) Could be a little juicier! Call your order in if you want it quicker. Coconut syrup is a must if you enjoy sweet and salty. Interesting characters here cuz it's next to 7-11. ==================== $19 got me a combo #1 and a side of collard greens that took about 15 min (with an order(s?) Ahead of me). Combo #1 Two chicken tenders with medium spice and a waffle slightly larger than my palm. It came with some ali sauce which is a Cajunyish honey mustard. Chicken is a touch dry, but maybe cuz I ate it 4 hours later? Stuck it in the air fryer. Had to dunk it in the sauce to make it more enjoyable. On its own was good, but the wonderful sauce made it great. Medium spice wasn't too spicy, prolly get the Thai spicy next time. Coconut syrup Holy if you ever see this on a menu, get it. It paired greatly with the chicken for a sweeter offset. Not too sweet or thin. I could drink this lol Waffle It's thick, fluffy, light, and crisp!! Wish they were a bit bigger, but these paired great with the chicken and coconut sauce. Bomb if you like waffles. Collard greens These were ok, on the slightly oily side. Prefer others. Service Guy was pretty generous when I asked for a cup of water. I was super thirsty, this was very appreciated. Environment When I was here, there's quite a bit of interesting characters aka some homeless people. It's a little sketch outside, so gotta take that into consideration. My order took 10-15 min and with the amount of homeless ppl and one of them coming in, I'll prolly just call in my order next time ~

Yelp
The food is great, the chicken is perfect, and the staff is very nice. Best chicken around City Heights.
google avatar

Yelp
Went here for the first time tonight. Chicken sandwich was exceptionally good: fried chicken was juicy, crispy and had the perfect amount of pickles and spicy mayo. Without exaggeration, maybe the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. Burrito was also great but sandwich was unsurpassed. Mac and cheese was also very good, but maybe saucier than you'd usually expect. Lady at counter was very nice. Genuinely looking forward to going back here next time I'm in the neighborhood and trying the breakfast stuff

Melissa S.

Yelp
This restaurant is difficult to find at first... just look for the donut sign.. you will have found Ali's. This is a very small fast food establishment in the heart of city heights. They share space w the donut shop and only have 3 small tables... I suggest ordering take out and eat in the park. We ordered a #2 chicken and waffle spice level hot (but compared to Dave's heat this was mild). The sauces... I'm not sure which was the a Ali's sauce and which was the chipolte... but if the Ali's was the white sauce and the Chipotle was the orange colored sauce, I liked the orange sauce better. The chicken is tender and moist - delicious. The waffle is super thick (like 2+ inches) and served w coconut syrup that when paired with the spicy chicken made for a good tasty bite. Woman at counter was friendly and knowledgeable. We will go back again.
google avatar

Alivia P.

Yelp
Another place I found on instagram lol because I was looking for a chicken and waffle spot because San Diego doesn't have any like LA , I went and tried it and it was amazing. It was inside of a donut shop, if you want to sit there's a row of tables inside
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely amazing and one of a kind. Their coconut sauce is great! I wish the portions were a little bigger though
google avatar

Yelp
This spot was 10/10 chicken was delicious! Customer service was great, space was a bit small, but very clean I would definitely come back! Loved the complimentary water they had outside.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good grilled chicken sandwich, the chicken was nice and flavorful and moist. I got the herbed mayo instead and it was great , the fries on the other hand were cold and old, went back to get hot ones and they were warm and old. It was a very long wait for the food, around 45 minutes.
google avatar

Aida R.

Yelp
This is an unassuming yet endearing eatery that shares store space with a donut shop. I ordered a tender and waffle combo, which did not disappoint! The chicken tender was light and juicy, while the coconut syrup that accompanied the waffle was a welcomed surprise. My friend ordered a spicy chicken sandwich, which she really enjoyed. For my spicy food lovers: Don't expect to break a sweat while eating their spicy chicken. You're still in for a treat, though! Would recommend, especially to those on the lookout for halal meat options :)

Yelp
Was super happy to come visit Ali's Chicken and Waffles after seeing their spot in the Top 50 Yelp List for San Diego. We tried their spicy chicken sandwich and also got Combo #2 with chicken tenders, fries, and a waffle. Starting with the spicy chicken sandwich, this was so so delicious. It was perfectly spicy, moist, and the bun was insanely good! At $7 I feel like it was a bit steep especially because it was a bit small, but this isn't stopping me from wanting to get this again. Onto the chicken and waffles combo, this was also very good. The fries, unfortunately, were stale and weren't very good (probably would've been better off with combo 1 without fries). With that being said, the waffle was so fluffy and the coconut syrup was insane. Highly recommend checking this spot out if you're in the area :-) Plus they're sometimes at the Little Italy + Hillcrest Farmers Markets selling thai food! Would definitely love to check them out there as well
google avatar

Cassandra D.

Yelp
So damn good! I love the spicy chicken the best and the home sandwich. They do the crispy so perfect and amazingly delicious and the buns are fresh with a nice soft chew. I get two at a time because they're too darn good

Yelp
I'm giving Ali's Chicken and Waffles a solid 4.5! I arrived right when they opened and had no trouble with parking. I'm sure by now people know they are located inside the donut shop next to the 7-11. I didn't order chicken because to be honest.. I grew up eating chicken, and no matter how many times you smack it, flip it , rub it down... it's still just chicken to me! I did however order their Shrimp and Grits and an order of waffles. It took a lil time but I also got there when they opened and they cook to order. The food was still hot by the time I got home. I first tried the shrimp and grits. Grits were nice and creamy and also good size shrimp. Yes.. I am THAT person that puts sugar on my grits.. don't @me haha.. but I saw no need. I do wish they added a little more "drippings" and the corn a little less flat.. but I would highly recommend this dish. Now the waffles.. no I'm sorry.. not even the waffles.. that coconut syrup is fire!! I've never in my life tasted syrup like that and feel like I've been missing out!! I actually was a little thrown off when I first took it out the bag.. I was like what is this*%#%*!! Weird looking butter haha! That syrup is 5 stars hands down! Waffles are some of the best waffles I've had as well. I will be returning .. not so much for chicken tho lol.

Yelp
Super unassuming from the outside, so if you were just passing by, you might miss this gem of a spot! I looked up restaurants in the area and found Ali's Chicken & Waffles with an impressive 5-star rating on Yelp, and got around to finally trying it when I was in the area. - PARKING - They share a VERY small parking lot with 7-11 and technically are within the Donut Shop on the corner. There's limited street parking along the side streets, but I think you're better off parking 1-2 blocks away rather than try to snag a spot in the lot. It was full during the entire time we were there! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - As mentioned before, Ali's Chicken & Waffles is technically within the Donut Shop store front. In the photo you can see, when you first walk in you have the display cases of donuts, then on the right hand side is where Ali's is located. Cashier was very friendly - saw him interact with several customers and he is very accommodating and respectful of people's times. There was a surge of DoorDash orders as well as walk-in orders, but he still made sure to give spectacular customer service. He offered to give an extra drink since we waited so long, but we declined; however, he did give us extra sauces for free (we just gave him the $1 in the tip jar anyways) - appreciate the offers! - FOOD - Spicy Chicken Sandwich ($6.00): Definitely smaller than expected, but this is one of those "quality over quantity" moments. Brioche bun was super fluffy, herbed mayo was delicious and not overpowering, chicken itself was crispy yet had a juicy inside... it was a great Chicken Sandwich! It did have a kick compared to my boyfriend's sandwich, although I wouldn't immediately say its a Thai Chili spice. Still, it was a delicious option! Home Chicken Sandwich ($6.00): There's definitely a lot of the "East-African clarified butter", and it mixed well with the herbed mayo. I enjoyed the freshness of the tomatoes in this sandwich! Again, chicken was crispy but still juicy! - Make it a Combo ($6.75): You can get a fountain drink, fries and sauce if you add this on. Saves you about $0.25, so its not too much less. Fries were lightly seasoned but still crispy similar to their Chicken. I liked Ali's Sauce the most - has a mustard undertone with creamy/spicy flavors. Chipotle Mayo was my second favorite just because I like my spicy foods, but Herbed Mayo was still good - just prefer it as a sandwich condiment rather than a dipping sauce. - OVERALL - Great service, great food. Would recommend ordering ahead of time as it can get really busy, and parking is not the easiest. Would love to come back and support this business again while trying out some of their other menu items, maybe the breakfast options!

Yelp
SOOOOOOOO BOMBBB!! Once they took over an hour to get some fries out, but I'm not mad about it at all. Sometimes business gets rough, and I have never experienced such a late order since that. Things happen, and I'm incredibly thankful for the food! My only complaint is the prices... but then... things haven't been kind to small businesses lately! The customer service is awesome. The environment of the store is very nice and not overwhelming, which is a hard thing to find. Thank you!

Yelp
I came to try out Ali's for lunch after seeing all the reviews on it.. Note that this place is in a shared shop with Donut Star. My son enjoyed the spicy chicken sandwich. He liked the crunch and the flavor, but also mentioned it's not as spicy as he thought it'd be. I got a chick-in-waffle sandwich, it's was okay.. nothing out of the ordinary. We also got the Ali's Fries, which was the best thing we ordered. It's fries topped with corn pico, diced chicken, with a chipotle mayo sauce. It was simple but good! The grits & mac n' cheese was just that. Mac was too soupy for me. I recommended calling in and placing your order as it took nearly 40 mins to get our food. We'd go back to try the other SoulCal Specials.

Yelp
Bruh, this used to be the best chicken sando in SD. The Mac n cheese used to be better than many restaurants with the perfect blend of tangy, nutty, and creamy. I've been going here for years, and at one point I was getting this 3x a week for me & my wife. Chicken has been dry, Mac cheese has been straight goop, and they've messed up my order twice in a row. The first time, they got me a tea while I waited. Thank you. The second time, I noticed the sauce was missing at the store. Quick fix. I get home and my two waffle sandwiches for me and the wifey are fries and some dry ass sandwich. They won't answer the phone over a period of 30 mins which is sus & why I feel like I gotta write this. I know mistakes are easy to make at a food joint like this & I don't like etching those mistakes eternally into the internet. But y'all ain't gonna answer the phone? Come on now. Please don't take Ali's from me. Someone read my review and do me right.

Yelp
Highly recommend. Stumbled on this place & I've gone 3 times in 4 days. Spicy chicken sandwich has a nice lil kick. Their tenders are good size & as juicy as can be while the coconut syrup on their waffles is the perfect sweetness. Ali's sauce is a spicy twist to a thousand island dressing, you'll be wanting more. I think this place beats all the other chicken sandwich spots.

Yelp
Ugh. I hate to do this but ever since they opened their second downtown location, things haven't been the same. The quality has gone WAYYY down. We have been going to Ali's since they opened. Loyal, avid fans. On the last 4 visits, we regretted ordering from here because everything was terrible. Each time they have been out of mac n cheese "because they didn't have milk" or they "didn't prep enough this morning." The last time we got the mac n cheese, it was just inedible. It was literally a cup of thick melted cheese with only about about 5 overcooked, desentegating noodles. It was gross and we had to throw 2 orders way. Last night, we ordered our usual 2 original chicken sandwiches with fries. I chicken tasted like it was from the frozen aisle. Just by looking at it you could tell something was off. The fries were overcooked and dry. We ate a couple bites of one sandwich and threw everything else away...again. :( What is going on??? Ali's used to be the bomb. Our favorite place ever! Due to the past few times we've been there, we probably won't ever go back which is so sad! Management: I hope you read this and figure out what is happening over there. We will be grieving the loss of Ali's.

Yelp
Alis Chicken shares the space with the donuts shop so is not very spacious, burritos are decent.

Yelp
Probably the most juicy chicken tenders I've ever had. Paired it their thick waffle and drizzle some syrup on it, OMG it's amazing. Beats Roscoe's by FAR. Highly recommend

Yelp
Hands down the best chicken sandwich joint ever!!! The food is so fresh and the wait isn't long at all. It's located in the donut shop, just a heads up because I got lost the first time. I highly recommend them!

Yelp
LOVE their fries and spicy chicken sandwich. Very affordable and delicious. Staff is always super friendly. It's a small operation it seems so orders can take a while but it's worth the wait. I often end up ordering ahead through their website. Parking can be hectic as it's a small lot shared between 3 establishments but I don't usually run into problems if i order ahead. There's tables but it's not the most comfortable place to dine in personally. Definitely one of my favorite take out spots in City Heights and I go there at least once a month. You guys rock!!

Yelp
This is my new favorite restaurant in San Diego! Everything is incredible. All of the choices are so smart, like the coconut syrup with the chicken and waffles. I never would've thought of it, but it is so delicious. The shrimp and grits are such a unique and amazing take on that dish, and probably the best I've ever had (which is saying a lot since I'm from the South). Everything I've tried has been so good. I love that you can get a side of cheese grits two! The pricing is also super reasonable. Amazing spot all around. ETA: dannng I tried the collard greens today and they're ALSO the best I've ever had, cannot believe. Those plus the grits and I'm set for dinner honestly
