Pint-sized, takeout-style Caribbean eatery offering traditional island fare.
"At Ali’s, a cash-only Bed-Stuy takeout spot specializing in food from Trinidad and Tobago, you can get a sprawling, flaky roti wrapped around your choice of meat. Shrimp, salmon, oxtail, beef—there are a lot of options, although our top picks would have to be the bone-in goat and chopped chicken doused in a golden curry sauce. A single roti makes for a very filling meal, but it's important to save room for the true headliners here: the doubles. Get yours spicy, with tamarind chutney and mango kuchela spread on top of the cumin-scented chickpeas, and add a housemade peanut punch for the perfect salty, sweet pairing. Food Rundown photo credit: Kate Previte Doubles Soft, springy bara, fresh from the fryer, topped with thick, curried channa. The doubles at Ali's pack more flavor than most, especially when dolloped with tangy tamarind chutney. Get one for your walk home, and a few more to eat throughout day." - Bryan Kim
"This decades-old Trinidad and Tobago roti shop was closed for a time and recently renovated, and you probably won’t be able to tell the differences as the line snakes out the door at lunchtime. The list of rotis is expansive, but I still prefer the bone-in goat or chicken, and conch, which adds the taste of the sea to its potato-and-chickpea curry filling. Other vegetables may be optionally added to the filling like pumpkin and spinach." - Robert Sietsema
"A&A’s is the hub for doubles and Ali’s is the go-to spot for doubles." - Stephanye Watts
"Not long ago, Ali’s Trinidad Roti Shop closed for renovation without putting up much of a sign, scaring many ardent patrons. Now it has reopened with a flashier look, and products displayed in the new picture windows (roasted peanuts, soda, medicinal teas, pepper sauce, and such). The heart of the menu is still a vast range or rotis wrapped in a flatbread called dhalpuri, including conch, liver, kingfish, and curry goat. Don’t forget to add veggies like squash and spinach. Halal and cash only." - Eater Staff
"Head to Trinciti, Ali’s Trinbago Roti Shop, and Trinidad Golden Place in the Caribbean enclaves of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, and Flatbush in Brooklyn, as well as Richmond Hill and Ozone Park in Queens." - Caroline Shin
