All Souls Pizza is yet one more Asheville restaurant that's been been getting some national write-ups.
The apparent reason for the attention is that All Souls' pies are made using house-milled flour from local, organic grains. The crust is certainly different from the average pizza: much wheatier and zestier, but at the same time, it seemed to me relatively inert texturally compared to the bubbling and charring you might get from a high-end wood-or-coal-fired pizza. Still, our pie with locally-made soppressata, basil, oregano, sheeps' cheese, garlic, and tomato--all top-quality and fresh--was quite delicious. Just different, that's all.
We also shared the salad, which was very refreshing and good, although you really have to break down those Bibb lettuce leaves. An unexpectedly good appetizer was the "crispy chickpeas": They were fried, a preparation I'd never had before, and who knew how good that could be? Simply covered with a garlic yogurt, and addictive.
All Souls is super-casual. Supposedly, this was formerly a Greek restaurant, and the interior seemed a bit antiseptic, stark, and dark. We passed straight through that space and ate outside at the picnic tables on a beautiful summer evening, and that's certainly the way to go if the weather's nice.
Really good beer choices, like most restaurants in Asheville.
