Almú - Review - San Martin de Tilcajete - Oaxaca - The Infatuation

"Almú is located in the fields of San Martín Tilcajete, a small town 45 minutes outside Oaxaca. The Oaxacan restaurant with an open-air kitchen is the ideal setting to begin or end a visit to one of the town’s many alebrije workshops, where you can see and learn about the traditional hand-carved wooden sculptures painted with natural dyes. All their dishes—like tasajo, a smoked and roasted dried beef, freshly made tlayudas, entomatadas, and tortillas stuffed with chicken and bathed in black mole—come in generous portions that can (and should) be shared. Bring some friends, grab a table made from a local tree trunk, and think about seriously getting into woodworking." - Liliana López

The 32 Best Restaurants in Oaxaca, Mexico - Eater

"Almú is a hidden smoke kitchen near Cerro María Sánchez, the sacred mountain in the Ocotlán district of Oaxaca, about 40 mins away from the city center. Located inside a copal tree reservoir, Almú serves homemade food prepared daily by cooks from the region, including delicious tortillas, quesadillas, and empanadas from the comal; black mole with rice and chicken; grilled veggies with quesillo that are melted under the comal; and the most delicious salsa de carne frita (pork ribs fried with a lot of garlic, and served with tomatillo sauce and frijoles de la olla). The place was great service, and excellent food. However it is best to make a reservation, to have a spot and not wait. Over all 10/10, and especially help from Laura our waiter. An unforgettable experience.

This place is fantastic. The food is great. It takes about 10 minutes to arrive from the main highway. Laura is a great server and explained the food well. Make time to stop here. Tips is the guacamole and the rancheros. Both plates were fantastic! The price is in pesos.

Absolutely incredible ambiance, like out of a dream. The smoke from the grills can be intense, try to sit at the tables away from those. Top notch food, service, and plant/people watching.

THE very definition of a treasure off the beaten path. Almu is as authentic Oaxaca cuisine gets… all local ingredients, cooked over firewood and served with freshly made tortillas from a comal. Surrounded by fresh herbs and spices in their garden, the rustic setting is solidified by a handwritten menu that says clearly “ Cash Only” 💵 … the good thing is that their prices are so reasonable, you won’t need a lot. For our group of four we had the “Canasta de Maíz” and the “Trilogía de Moles” which was plenty, and with a beer each only set us back $1,400 pesos ($70 USD) and we had some to take home. The three moles are just amazing and the quesadillas con flor de calabaza in the canasta are out of this world. Loved this place!
