"For an adventure off the beaten path, make the trek to this rustic countryside kitchen south of Oaxaca City. More than once, you will wonder if you’re headed in the right direction, up until you find an expansive shed with an open-air dining room surrounded by plants, trees, and pottery. Sweet smoke wafts from the kitchen, which is powered by burning logs that cooks move around with their hands. The offerings are traditional: Crispy memelas, hearty enmoladas enrobed in mole, and sizeable tlayudas stuffed with local cheese. Excellent tableside salsas enliven everything they touch. It goes without saying that this outdoor experience has plenty of charm and also assumes that guests don’t mind dining with the elements." - Michelin Inspector

The 23 Best Restaurants In Oaxaca - Oaxaca - The Infatuation

"Almú is located in the fields of San Martín Tilcajete, a small town 45 minutes outside Oaxaca. The Oaxacan restaurant with an open-air kitchen is the ideal setting to begin or end a visit to one of the town’s many alebrije workshops, where you can see and learn about the traditional hand-carved wooden sculptures painted with natural dyes. All their dishes—like tasajo, a smoked and roasted dried beef, freshly made tlayudas, entomatadas, and tortillas stuffed with chicken and bathed in black mole—come in generous portions that can (and should) be shared. Bring some friends, grab a table made from a local tree trunk, and think about seriously getting into woodworking." - liliana lopez, mariana camacho

The 32 Best Restaurants in Oaxaca, Mexico | Eater

"Almú is a hidden smoke kitchen near Cerro María Sánchez, the sacred mountain in the Ocotlán district of Oaxaca, about 40 mins away from the city center. Located inside a copal tree reservoir, Almú serves homemade food prepared daily by cooks from the region, including delicious tortillas, quesadillas, and empanadas from the comal; black mole with rice and chicken; grilled veggies with quesillo that are melted under the comal; and the most delicious salsa de carne frita (pork ribs fried with a lot of garlic, and served with tomatillo sauce and frijoles de la olla). Fun, colorful atmosphere and a warm hospitality that makes you feel like you’re a guest in a local home. This charming restaurant set in a garden /nursery offers delicious, homey food like mole, quesadillas, and grilled meat. Unfortunately they don’t really offer vegetarian options, which is a bummer when Mexican cuisine is so easily vegetarian. However, I really appreciated that they did do their best to adapt what they had and we got the mole trilogy with grilled fresh cheese instead of meat. It was tasty, but a bit too much cheese. It would have been better if it maybe had some mushroom or veggies instead of or in addition to the cheese. We also enjoyed the guacamole starter and their amazing hot drinking chocolate. The food was all of excellent quality though not the best flavor-wise that we’ve had in the region. But the experience is enjoyable and worth the visit.

Google
Definitely one of the best places to eat in Oaxaca. Traveling here from the city just to grab a meal is totally worth it. Farm to table and wood stoves with traditional cooks, outdoors, what else can you ask for. Great service? Well, they are outstanding at that.

Absolutely wonderful place, full of nature! I have gone multiple times and every time there is the alebrijes fair I stop by. Food is great. Try the salsa de costilla frita o their huevos al comal. Once you are done with your meal you can walk around a buy a plant 🪴 All of the plants are for sale
