The Best Restaurants to Try in the LA Mountains This Summer | Eater LA

"When in the mountains, a hearty bagel with turkey, chive cream cheese, avocado, tomato, onion, lettuce, and lemon pepper will do nicely. They run on mountain time at Amangela’s, so order a latte, Bloody Mary, or berry delight smoothie and enjoy the lack of hurry. They serve the aforementioned along with salads, soups, and sandwiches made with homemade focaccia, all in the middle of the highly walkable Village area. — Mona Holmes, editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest" - Mona Holmes

The Best Restaurants & Bars In Big Bear

"You could probably walk past Amangela's a dozen times in The Village without noticing it, and that would be a shame. Because while it doesn't look like much from the outside (or the inside), and the coffee is just OK, Amangela's is home to one of the best breakfasts in Big Bear: the Breakfast Bagel sandwich. This three-egg behemoth topped with whatever your cold heart desires is mandatory before going out on the lake." - sylvio martins, garrett snyder, brant cox

Guide to Visiting Big Bear Lake, California

"Start your day in Big Bear by getting exactly what you want at Amangela’s Sandwich and Bagel House. Here, guests can choose a creation from its lengthy menu, including veggie bagels stacked high and classics like lox and cream cheese. What a nice quaint, yet spacious restaurant with plenty of seating. But you didn't come here for that (maybe), the food is cooked with care and love. They have a selection of homemade bread. I had the pastrami sandwich with their homemade jalapeño cheddar bread. For those who can't handle spice, it's not noticeable. For those like me who someday wish to sample lava, you won't feel it. Try it anyway. It's flavorful and pairs well with pastrami for added depth. The staff is friendly and helpful. For the price, you get a nice hearty serving (in my opinion).

Google
Amangela’s is a nice spot in downtown big bear for lunch. I’m a little torn because $18 for a sandwich is pretty steep, and the wait for food was about 30 minutes despite not being busy. Other than that the staff were friendly and atmosphere was nice. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating in the shade which is a plus! Good place to come with a family because of all the options.

Google
Tried for the first time today and for a Tuesday afternoon, its a busy place. My daughter had a sandwich and rated it a 4 outta 5 stars. For comparison, Old Town Bakery in San Bernardino and Rancho Cucamonga is her fave. I had the vegan chili and it was SO GOOD. I give it 5 stars. It's a bit pricey here but no more than most places and its quality. I was given baked bread with my chili and it seems homemade and is delicious. It's a nice little spot to dine in at and there's a decent amount of seating for a sandwich shop. I'll remember this spot when we are here.

Every time we passed this sandwich spot, I swear it said angelas haha! Well, Amangela's sandwich spot was freakn good. I felt healthy jus by eating there. The bread was delicious, the sandwich and potato salad was on lock. Jus a simple portion to get sumtn not too heavy in your tummy. Cute inside with some seating outside. Think you'll like it. Conveniently close to shops and entertainment.

Google
Food took close to an hour. Seems like regulars know it’s better to order take out. Not worth the wait. $6.75 for a bagel with cream cheese. $20 for a roast beef sandwich. It’s true not a lot of other good options, but the wait and service are terrible.

Google
Great tasting bagels and sandwiches! We had the roast beef sandwich, lox salmon bagel, turkey sandwich, and jalapeño bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. They each were amazing! Will visit this place again to try a different menu option.

My husband and I had lunch at Amangelas before heading over to see a movie at the Village Theater today. I had the Veggie Sandwich on rye bread. I liked that one of the options was rye bread. The sandwich was delicious. I could only eat half of it so we asked for a small to go box. Since we were headed to see a movie I asked if it could be kept in one of their fridges til after the movie. The young man wrote my name on top of the take home container and put it in a fridge. After the movie we picked it up and took it back to our cabin. Tonight when we were watching TV we took a break to get a snack and I ate the other half of my sandwich. I told my husband I was thinking on and off how fresh and great it tasted so I had it rather than something else. The side I had was the potato salad and it was really good to. I had regular unsweetened iced tea with lemon and the tea was refreshing. I look forward to eating there again. Highly recommend. My husband had an imitation turkey sandwich which he liked.

Google
Stopped in on MLK day. Wasn’t busy. Bagels sandwiches were fantastic. Came with a side of fruit. Food came fairly quickly. Iced coffee was good. Cashier was very friendly (if you read this congrats on your fish catch!).

Yelp
What a great place for a meal or snack! We've been walking the area and needed water, which they offer. The menu looked appetizing and we tried the veggie sandwich on an everything bagel with potato salad to try and split. So good and fresh! Definitely enough to share. Plenty of seating inside and out. A great spot to get a bite, rest our feet and enjoy the surroundings. Customer service was excellent too. Highly recommended!

Yelp
We were here for drinks only. After walking around the village, this spot is in the back, perfect for us to take a break. They have patio seating. When you come in, there is a lot on the blackboard menu. It can be hard to read. They have paper menu, easier to read. Drinks were meh but staff were very nice. Iced coffee with milk barely taste coffee. Citrus smoothie is like from concentrate carton juice. But these are iced drinks on a hot day, so it's all good. They also have free water dispenser & doggy treat inside. They look like dream bone brand for mini dog, but I can be wrong. Bathroom in the back leads to connected business there, pretty big. Nice and clean.

Yelp
"The other 1/2" (because I devoured the first 1/2) of my (cold) Pastrami on homemade focaccia bread (w/ some spicy mustard, tomatoes & sprouts - the customizations cost extra FYI) While it's not the "healthy" item on the menu, it keeps this place as one or my favorite spots in Big Bear! They have a jalapeno bread too . And that dill potato salad comes on the side too (again, the other 1/2) of the actual portion)

Yelp
If I could give 6 stars, I would. What a WONDERFUL place! We visited them on the Big Bear Wine Walk and they were lovely. Not only did they have homemade foccaccia bread (4 different kinds - 2 of them vegan-friendly) and 2 different kinds of hummus, but they were generous on their wine pours, dog friendly, AND brought us a bonus wine cocktail they'd crafted. Jenny Ray was staffing the Wine Walk table and she could not be more delightful. She gave the most exceptional customer service ever and was just a joy. I cannot say enough about the quality of the food. It was amazing and I cannot wait to go back for more! AMAZING job, Amangela's!!!

Yelp
I chose the 1/2 sandwich and turkey chili. The bread I chose was the house bread which is basil garlic focaccia. The bread is thick but so yummy. It's a very big portion. The turkey chili was delicious and definitely finished that right away! The BLT toppings on the sandwich were a good portion. Service was excellent! Both indoor and outdoor seating. It's a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

Yelp
Located right in the village with a parking lot in the back, street parking and another parking lot across the street. It does get busy so fair warning! We had a group of 6 and came for a late lunch at 3pm. The workers were nice and friendly. There are also lots of tables for outdoor seating which was a priority for us as we had 2 of our furry friends with us. The downside is that our sandwiches (5 total) took about 40 or so minutes to get to us. The plus side is the bread is really good. I had the turkey pesto and I really liked the garlic herb bread. The rest of the sandwich was pretty basic. My favorite was my husbands pastrami sandwich. The melted cheese really brought it all together and it was delicious. Overall a good place with reasonable prices for the size of the sandwich. Just expect to wait, even when it isn't super busy.

Yelp
We came in for coffee drinks before heading back home. Place was very cozy and welcoming even though it's fast casual style. The coffee varieties were decent and the food menu was huge. We had iced coffee and oat milk cappuccino. I appreciated that the cashier told me that oat milk doesn't foam much so it would be more like latte. That's right how could I not know that! lol I was thinking very slowly from high altitude sickness! I liked it that a worker brought out our coffee drinks to us. The drinks were strong and tasty for our road trip back home!

Yelp
Came by here while walking around the village. I was hungry and wanted something quick to eat while I did a little work. The place was empty on Tuesday but I decided to stop here since they had a lot of options and WiFi. The cashier suggested the zesty bagel so I opted for that on a cheese bagel (you get to choose the type of bagel) It was good, not a ton of things added on to it but enough to make it seem like a sandwich and had a nice savory flavor.

Yelp
Me and my daughter has a pre Xmas date in Big Bear. We have a food scavenger hunt and one of those food places is Amangela's. It was a nice cafe in Big Bear Village. The interior is a normal sandwich and salad design. Menu's written on the wall. We ended up getting their garden salad. To my surprised it was a big serving good for z2 people. The veggies were fresh and crunchy. We got balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing which didn't empower the salad. Service was vey good.

Yelp
Such a yummy sandwich spot and bagel spot. It's so delicious. The atmosphere is so pretty. It's cute. It's a cute little sandwich shop nothing fancy the service is great. Amy always helps. Not sure if she still works there but she's awesome. BLTs are to die for.

Yelp
First time coming here and wow it did not disappoint!! We came on a mid Monday morning. It was pretty empty but I can imagine it being busy like everyone on here says. It's a cute place when you walk in and the menu is on the wall. They played some reggae music which automatically gets a 5 star. The service was quick and the guy at the cashier was kind! The ingredients tasted fresh and our meals were so filling. The basil garlic bread was absolutely flavorful and so soft. This beats any sandwich spot I've been to! Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the turkey wrap with a side of fruit to go. The only thing I ate off the plate before the photo was a cantaloupe the size of the one melon in the photo. The grapes were soggy. If you get a side of fruit double check before you leave. Giving the benefit of the doubt that they closed the container before they finished adding the fruit. For a $17 meal, a side of fruit should be more than 8 grapes and two slices of melon. The turkey wrap was okay, not worth the $$, probably wouldn't order it again. The service was good. The line was long when I got there, (to the door) and they started placing orders in the line, definitely appreciated that. Once i ordered, I waited 20 mins for my food, not bad at all for a small business during a lunch rush.
google avatar

Ron S.

Yelp
Cute little spot! Had the Angela Special in Everything Bagel and Vanilla Latte! My kids enjoyed a Strawberry Banana Smoothie. It took a while for the food but it was worth the wait. It was fresh and tasty.
google avatar

Kristie G.

Yelp
WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. Had pretty high hopes for this place, but unfortunately I would not come back. I ordered a pumpkin spice latte and a caramel blended iced coffee. The total was over $15 (there was also a 3.99% service fee for not using cash. It was about $7 per drink, $5 for the latte plus $2 for flavoring. I then ordered two bagels, which were actually pretty tasty, but once again not worth the additional $15. It was $3.50 for the bagel PLUS $2.95 for cream cheese. Absolutely INSANE prices, and absolutely NOT worth it. $30 for two coffees and two bagels is absurd. I also opened my coffee because it felt light and it wasn't even filled close to the top. To spend $7 on a coffee and not even get a full cup is crazy.

Yelp
Every time we come to Big Bear we come for brunch at least once. It is never overly crowded but always has visitors eating or picking up. Their patio seating is also nice on a cool day. Their sandwiches are huge and delicious and their bagels are soft and crunchy. They don't skimp on anything! I highly recommend.
google avatar

Samantha B.

Yelp
Good spot for bagels, sandwiches, and wraps. Service was quick and the food was fresh. I got the turkey wrap with the potato salad--the garlic hummus was really good on it. My husband got the breakfast sandwich with egg, onion, green bell peppers, and bacon on a jalapeño cheddar bagel--it was also good but the bagel was pretty thin and soft. He would have liked it more toasted so it had more of a crunch to it. Overall it was a good spot to stop in for a quick bite.
google avatar

Tamara W.

Yelp
We won't be back after ordering two sandwiches that were said to be around $15 and ended up paying $45! I am not sure what the up charge was for other than he did add bacon to his sandwich. It would have been nice to sit outside at their tables but they had the chairs pulled in a couple hours before closing time. I was thrilled that they had gluten free bread. The sandwiches were nicely made. They charge extra if you use card which we did not realize. That's pretty crappy and cheap of the owners. The custom should be told prior to the transaction being processed. This was not a good first impression.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Still a great place and the Angela's Special is still great! I ate outside on the tables shared with other dining places. Good view of the street
google avatar

Beth S.

Yelp
I had no power in Moonridge. Old, repetitive story, everyone has heard this one.... Ran into Amangelas because I do not like Moonridge Coffee (just my personal opinion). Small cappuccino with lots of honey, toasted bagel with chive cream cheese (made in house) $11. Closer to $13 if paying with card. But, everyone does that. Good service, clean joint, expansive outdoor seating, I found a spot in the sun. Super good coffee. Very tasty bagel, cream cheese was plentiful. Thanks girls! Love me a power outage!
google avatar

Robin M.

Yelp
We absolutely love their sandwiches! The fresh bread is so good and the potato salad is the best I've had out. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Anaiza M.

Yelp
Omg what a gem! Love the food. Easily shareable. The staff totally allowed me to try their humus spread before ordering the sandwich. Super cute spot in the village with easy parking. Ambiance gives really cute vibes and they have a super cute accent wall that is a work of art on its own. I need to go back and visit this beauty.
google avatar

Tiff L.

Yelp
Bagel sandwich shop in the heart of The Village. Great variety in menu items. Smoothies, coffees, bagels, sandwiches, soup, etc. - lox & cream cheese(May just possibly be the best lox n bagel I've ever had, the touch of tomatoes was extra yummy, absolute must) 5/5 - amangela's special (chive cream cheese is the special touch in this one) 5/5 If you go off hours, it's no wait at all. If you go Sunday before everyone expects to check out or at a prime breakfast or lunchtime during the weekend, then of course it's going to be busy. I think I've waited an hour before to get my food. It's a super small kitchen n staff so you have to be patient when it is expected to be busy Definitely coming back when I make the trip
google avatar

Clark S.

Yelp
The breakfast for my wife and I could not have been better. She had the avocado toast special and I had the breakfast bagel. So delicious! His staff was awesome and opened the door 5 minutes early for us. My only disappointment is I didn't have the appetite to order the lox bagel! I will have to come back to get that next time!
google avatar

Maria D.

Yelp
Was having a huge bagel craving so I was so excited to find one right where I was! But I always have to base my review with the service... everyone in there is RUDE! I understand everyone has bad days but I cannot comprehend why to be so rude to the costumer when they're charging $13+ for a bagel sandwich. Also, they add a 3.99% if you're paying with debit or credit. The sandwich was okay, a 2/5. Honestly I don't think I'm coming back
google avatar

Jillian L.

Yelp
The people who work there are really nice. It is a local sandwich shop in the village and very easy to get to. There is a parking lot in the back and also parking along the street. The sandwiches are pretty big and also very simple. The sandwiches are a little pricey but they do come with a side.

Martha M.

Yelp
I've been here two days in a row while spending 4 days in Big Bear for a retreat. The vegan chili is made with fresh ingredients and was mildly spicy, full of flavor and simply delicious. I love this simple salad because the dressing is made in house and the ingredients are crisp and fresh. My husband had the pastrami on jalapeño cheddar fresh baked bread. He said this is by far the best pastrami sandwich he's ever had! We will be dining here every chance we get!
google avatar

Cloide D.

Yelp
OMG ! 25 minutes for a bagel??? Nobody here WTF . At least they gave me a refund with out an attitude. I
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Cute little sand which spot homemade breads. Half sandwich's if you like. Blended coffees are good here. I had a BLTA on sourdough. Sand which was good I only ate half it it was enough.
google avatar

Dane S.

Yelp
Food was delicious. I came in right before the end of the breakfast bell (they stop serving at 10:30 am) and got a breakfast bagel sandwich. Only knock is the price. They don't show them on the menu up against the wall, perhaps the high cost is why. It was $16.75 for this. Feels steep for the quantity. Quality was excellent though, super fresh, clean restaurant- and the woman at the check stand was extremely friendly and helpful. If I was local to Big Bear, I'd be back again. As an occasional visitor, I might look for a spot with more bang for my buck the next time I'm in town for breakfast
google avatar

Eve C.

Yelp
Ordered the cheddar bagel which comes with chive cream cheese, red onions, & tomato. It's super simple but satisfied my bagel craving. I came on a Saturday around 12 pm & waited around 45 minutes total. I recommend their turkey pesto sandwiches & potato soup.
google avatar

Eve T.

Yelp
Still the best hidden little gem. Its a very eclectic cute little spot. With a huge menu. I had the strawberry banana frozen mimosa a delicious sweet treat. My hubs had the open faced turkey bagel i think its called amangels special. With no tomatoes. My son ordered the salmon and lox. Both were delicious. Enough to share unless you are super hungry. My other son ordered the french dip it was huge too and tasty! My other son ordered a PB and Jam so big he couldn't even finish it. So yummy!! Breakfast or brunch totally worth it. I hope they never close!
google avatar

Theresa K.

Yelp
I'm a Big Bear local. This is my go to, even on a busy touristy weekend for the best sandwiches in town. I've never ordered a single thing that wasn't fresh and exactly what I was craving. Great bread and meats. Coffee selection is good. Also go here for amazing bagels. Zesty bagel is my favorite, they never skimp on ingredients. Staff is always sweet and friendly. Sometimes there's a wait and I hate going to the village on weekends, but it's worth the wait!

Tori M.

Yelp
If your looking for breakfast/lunch these Bagels were so good, smoothies are great!! Best sandwiches here !!

Darla M.

Yelp
Wonderful sandwiches and we enjoyed the mint infused water while waiting. Lots of amazing choices and the service was great Cute little restaurant with lots of places to eat inside and out. It was our first time (4 of us!) and we will definitely make this a regular spot when we're in town!

La Z.

Yelp
VEGAN and GLUTEN FREE options. We both enjoyed a veggie sandwich. It is better than your typical veggie sandwich at an American style sandwich or diner place. They had all the veggies on it. They also offer a vegan chili. Other vegan and gluten-free selections would be smoothies, salads, and they have a great selection of not cow udder milk for your cold and hot beverages. A nice staff was very friendly and helpful in answering questions we had about the menu. There is indoor seating as well as dog, friendly outdoor seating.
google avatar

Bella C.

Yelp
Yummy sandwiches! They have a lot of seating which is great. The service was good, they were patient with our large group. The amount of food was worth the money. Everyone in my party was satisfied with their meal and we all want to go again.

Jenny D.

Yelp
Such a great place to eat such a yummy spot to come for brunch there sandwiches are amazing

Kari K.

Yelp
Amazing bagels!! Fast service!! Great location!! We will keep coming back every chance we get.

Roopam J.

Yelp
Terrible service. We came in for a sandwich and coffee. The coffee just tasted like hot milk. After ordering we are waiting for someone to put the chairs down and when asked where can we sit, the server goes "give me a second I'lll put the chairs down" and then we ended up doing it ourselves. She dumps the coffee at our table and when asked for sugar and she directs us to the self serve station. All the while, asking for a tip for no service? Doesn't make sense.
google avatar

Addison C.

Yelp
Service was fine - typical counter serve level friendly service. We ordered two bagels, a smoothie, and a hot chocolate and the total was over $40. The prices aren't clearly marked on their menu, so this was unexpectedly expensive. The bagels were flavorful but the texture was weirdly soft and missing that signature bagel chewiness. The hot chocolate was made with powder mix and water and was completely disgusting - my child would not drink it. The smoothie was also just okay. The cafe itself is clean and cozy and a nice little spot in the village. Come expecting to pay tourist prices and you'll be reasonably satisfied.

Christian P.

Yelp
This place is the best, great atmosphere and the food is incredible. Service is really good, I definitely recommend.
google avatar

Cindy H.

Yelp
Prices are not listed on the menu. Sticker price was a shock at the cash register. Order delivered 25 mins after placing the order. Bring cash! Use the ATM in the shop and pay a fee. Or use plastic and pay a fee.
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
Holy wow! Their list of sandwiches is almost endless. They serve breakfast and lunch. There are drink options a plenty as well. The jalapeño cheese bread was so good. It was soft in the middle and crisp on the outside. It was quick service, but it was very tasty. And the prices are very reasonable.
google avatar

K S.

Yelp
The food is good however I waited about 30+ minutes in line and waiting for an order for 2 people. The location is great and the staff were obviously trying their best but I heard someone mention they always have lines. The inside itself is narrow with cluttered walls but there's plenty of seating and tables.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Food came out quick and was fresh and amazing. Highly recommend for bagels or sandwiches
google avatar

Leanne H.

Yelp
They have pretty good bagel sandwiches. Bagels are perfect and not dense. Cute quant spot. I visit it Every time i get to Big Bear.
google avatar

Ariana M.

Yelp
Good sandwiches! The only thing keeping us from giving it 5 stars was the wait though. It took 30 mins to get 2 sandwiches on a Tuesday @2:30pm.

Natalie A.

Yelp
It took 40 minutes to get two sandwiches, despite the number of people working. Not worth the wait.
google avatar

Lexy G.

Yelp
All of the workers are really nice and I could see that they were working hard, but it took 54 minutes for us to receive our order and it was less than impressive. We only ordered a jalapeño bagel with cream cheese and a lox bagel that ended up having skimpy lox and a total of 2 jalapeños... They were good enough to eat, but definitely not worth waiting as long as we did.
