The Best Restaurants in Paris, According to a French Food Expert | Eater

"At his bistro near the Bastille, chef Christophe Philippe serves the type of gutsy, honest, earthy bistro cooking the late Anthony Bourdain would have loved. A proper meal here ends with the best chocolate mousse in Paris; it’s made from the sublime chocolate produced by Italian Claudio Corallo on the tiny African islands of São Tomé and Príncipe. Unctuous, funky, deep, this dark fluff will leave you with a craving you’ll never escape. Located in the 12th arrondissement. Vibe check: The casual atmosphere — red banquette, tiled floor — drops you right into an Edward Hopper painting." - Alexander Lobrano

Amarante

"The restaurant window announces "French cuisine". Nothing more needs to be said! The food is deliciously traditional and unfussy and reveals the best well - chosen ingredients. The interior is equally simple and vintage: tiled floor, red imitation leather benches and wooden tables. Simple is best after all!" - Michelin Inspector

I found the cuisine here genuinely innovative — at least from my perspective. I especially enjoyed the scrambled eggs topped with trout roe and potato purée. The dish was served in a way that guided you toward discovering its unique flavors and how to savor them properly. There are a few clear rules to follow here, which I strongly recommend reading on their website beforehand. You’ll still be warmly and politely served if you don’t, but you might miss the deeper experience the restaurant intends to offer. By the way, they serve natural wines — not a controlled designation, but simply wine made without additives, just pure fermentation. A wonderful moment overall. Make sure to book ahead — the place is quite small.

Went for dinner and really loved the meal. The restaurant is small and cozy, and the staff is very kind. I had the monkfish which was excellent, my partner had the sweetbread and parents had the pork and lamb. All were excellent! We also had a special appetizer of tomatoes which were amazing. The wine was great. Would recommend

The cooking is perfect especially the searing of meat. Service is also excellent, always with a smile! Love the veal tongue, snails and both the veal cheek and Guinea fowl are delicious. However some other dishes or elements of the dishes are under-seasoned and the flavours cannot be fully released without sufficient salt (interior of some parts of the cheek) or sugar (the vanilla ice cream). I do love the chef’s techniques though and will revisit for dinner in the future.

Amazing michelin recommended restaurant! Very local, and the lunch set menu is extremely cheap and a great value! Make sure to make a reservation in advance as the restaurant is quite small. Starter: beef tongue. This was absolutely AMAZING! The tongue combined with the mayonaisr was very creamy and melta in your mouth. It was a refreshing starter that basically made my day! Main: pork shoulder. 2 very thick slices of pork shoulder, and each slice is quite fatty. After eating 1 slice, you'd get full quite quickly. The polenta was also very different from what I've had in Italy before. It was more creamy and tasted like custard. Some of the vegetables were nice, and some were quite bitter. There wasn't any specific sauce with the dish, and the pork shoulder was more of a "natural taste without being marinated" style. My partner got the chicken egg and trout egg dish. This was basically a bowl of very creamy mash potatoe with scrambled eggs on top and some orange trout eggs on top of that. Very nice but equally filling. Dessert: the one that was in between a cake and a french toast. decent. very almondy. It's not my favourite, but it's definitely not bad. The gentleman who served us was really nice.

As always, my ratings are relative to cost. I saw Amaranthe listed as a Michelin bib gourmand restaurant and was excited to check it out. My wife and I went for lunch and ordered “worker’s” formulas (entrée, plat and dessert €32 + drinks and add-ons). On the positive side, service was great, the wine recommendation was great, and all ingredients seemed top notch and cooked perfectly except for slightly burnt fish blinis. Portions were also generous. If your looking for very well executed but simple fare, definitely try this place. I, however was hoping for stronger flavor profiles, more herbs and spices, so was unfortunately a bit disappointed. C'est la vie....

The snails and veal tongue were a great starter. The fried brain was crispy on the outside as usual but soft on the inside. The sweetbread deserves to be the most expensive on the menu. I was really great. The cheese was great with its strong smell for dessert. And of course the lemon dessert. Thanks to Vedat Milor for his recommendation :)

Google
there is a lot to say. but i won't. you have to go and experience this excellence. It starts with the guy let me say, perfectionist in every detail, you can see it/feel it. (i'm sorry again for being late)

For our family’s first trip to Paris, I wanted to eat French food beyond the tourist staples of steak and frites. This restaurant was mentioned on various food blogs and it did not disappoint. The lone waiter was friendly and knowledgeable about the wines to pair with our mains and fluent in English. Hearty meat and fish mains with no frites in sight; well, there were “frites” made from chickpea flour which are then carb-free (since chickpeas are legumes and a meat free protein source) which were crunchy and delicious paired with the monkfish. My daughter let me have one of them🙄The four of us shared 2 orders of the wild snails sautéed in butter and parsley with raw greens in a light vinaigrette- the chef was thoughtful to divide them into 4 plates for us. We also shared an appetizer of tripe in a buttery sauce with olives and bread. My son and husband shared the steak and mashed potatoes (meant for two), which I had to agree, was the best I have ever had! I enjoyed my order of seasoned lamb on a bed of wild rice and gravy. Barely had room for dessert and we shared 2 orders of the lemon crème brûlée- we enjoyed the tartness after such a filling meal! The restaurant was not too loud even though almost full with everyone talking and laughing. Don’t expect fancy presentations or garnishes here. Great value compared to other places we have been to!

Yelp
I found Amarante open on Christmas, and it was 10 minutes from our apartment. Recommended in Michelin and Fooding, I assumed it would be pretty darn good. The food was good, but certainly not something to go out of your way for. If your grandmother was French, and she liked to cook for large groups, you would have an idea what the dishes were like at Amarante. I had baby lamb and spinach, and the large chunk of meat was tasty. My companion chose roasted veal, and my lamb was tastier. The appetizer pumpkin soup was quite good as was the foie gras pate, Desserts were okay at best. With wine, the bill came to 136 euros. Not bad, but the meal was nothing special, unless you are consumed by nostalgia.

Yelp
We, too, were led to this restaurant by The Paris Kitchen. Eager to try on an upcoming visit to Paris, my husband called ten days in advance and reserved for four on "dimanche le 21 juin." He gave his name as "John" and asked for 7:30. After the phone conversation, he worried that the person who answered the phone did not ask for his last name nor his email address. Therefore, once we arrived in Paris, two days ahead of our reservation, he asked our son to call to double-check our Sunday reservation and also to change the reservation to 8:00 pm if possible. Our son did so in French in our presence. Again, after the call, we wondered why no request for a last name, a phone number, etc., but assumed that if the person who answered the phone had needed it, he would have asked. When we arrived Sunday night at 8:00, we were told that our reservation had been for the night before. When we protested, the chef came out scowling.(He apparently takes reservations.) My husband tried to explain that we had called not once but twice, and in response, the chef snapped that he didn't understand English. Fair enough, so the three French speakers in our party translated and explained about both our calls. The chef pointed to his book, saying he had a reservation for 7:30 for Saturday and he couldn't possibly make a mistake twice. His tone and manner were very rude, as if to imply that we were making up what had happened. Then he said he had no table for us, announced "C'est termine!" and turned on his heels. (Of course he could have made two mistakes -- one in originally writing down the reservation on the wrong date and then not even bothering to check when the confirming call was made.) Perhaps he could not give us a table last night, but there was no reason at all for such extreme rudeness. Bottom line is be forewarned: maybe you will have a wonderful meal. But care is not taken to record and confirm your reservation and you may instead find yourself not only hungry and thirsty in a neighborhood that does not have much alternate fine dining (especially on a Sunday), but also insulted and mistreated to boot. I don't think it's worth taking the chance.

Yelp
A phenomenal meal by Chef Christophe Philippe. We were recommended to this restaurant by "The Paris Kitchen" (Wendy Lyn), and were not disappointed. The service was incredible. The food even more so. We started with the foie gras and escargot. Both entrées were outstanding. For the main course, we had the canard and the veal sweetbreads. Both left us wanting more. The flavors, crispiness and seasoning were amazing. The portions were perfect. We decided to split the chocolate mousse which was dense and decadent. Not too sweet, just perfect. We had the opportunity to thank Chef Christophe Philippe personally. He is a very gracious and kind and will go out of his way to accommodate. Thank you for an incredible dining experience during our Paris vacation.
