The Best Pizza in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Some of the very best pizza in town comes from Ancora, where individually-sized, wood-fired pies are prepared simply and with a few high-quality, well-selected ingredients (don’t miss the house-cured salumi). A succinct but delicious menu of salads, appetizers, and nearly ten pizzas (ask about the daily special) is available all week, with a happy hour on Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. when select pizzas are discounted." - Eater Staff

Where to Find the Best Charcuterie in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"The thin-crusted Neapolitan style pizza that comes out of the wood burning oven is reason enough to pop over to this eatery Uptown on Freret Street. Google
Ordered the Enzo Diavola and it was great! The chili paste is spicy but not too much. You can order it on the side as well. All pizzas are the same size. Two adults shared one, 3 slices each.

Google
Stumbled upon this place and had an unexpectedly perfect meal. Neapolitan pizza was excellent. Veggies grown in their own garden. Prices reasonable. The guy that took care of us really cared about the food, service and experience. Strong recommendation. Unpretentious but incredibly thoughtful menu and execution.

Google
The pizza was delicious if youre looking for Neapolitan style pizza. We tried the orange italian soda and the thai basil italian soda and we all preferred the thai basil better. The lady let us know the herbs are fresh from their own garden across the street. We ordered 4 pizzas, 1 Per family member because we love this style so much! This includes our little ones that are 6 and 2 years. Definitely will be coming back for more.

Google
Delightful! They tend their own garden, have a wood-fired pizza oven, and the employees make off-menu items for funsies. My drink had homemade grapefruitcello. (Next time I go I'll have a drink using their rosemary and shiso homemade syrup.) Black pepper and olive oil ice cream with peach cobbler for dessert.

Google
This was literally the best traditional Italian-style pizza that I have eaten so far in New Orleans!! Hence, the place is cozy and the staff is super nice and welcoming. I will definitely come back soon!

Google
my friend and i shared a pizza and some bruschetta when we first got into nola. the food was amazing and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. definitely a good way to start our trip!

Google
What happened to this place? I used to eat here when they first opened and it was amazing. Recently tried a few pizzas and the gnocchi. The sauce was so watery and bland. The pizza was soggy and wet. The gnocchi had good flavor, but the sauce was pasta water and butter. They didn't bother you reduce it to thicken it. Gross

Google
Disappointing. The pizzas look good, partly because they have a proper Neapolitan crust: thin and soft at the bottom, thick and fluffy at the sides. However, neither pizza we ordered tasted great. The Margherita lacked flavor and was topped with mint instead of basil. It was nonetheless better than the Supreme, which had excessively salty olives and sausage. Worse still was the Italian wine, which tasted like vinegar (at $13 per glass). The only decent dish we had were the antipasti. Don't recommend.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. This was our second visit to Ancora and will surely not be my last. My wife and I had the Calabrian sausage reponata and house salad contorini (starters). Sausage made in-house was spicy and tasty. Salad was well dressed, fresh, and dressing was tangy. We also shared the Bianca (white pizza). Excellent crust, good chew, toppings made it salty and occasionally sweet. What a wonderful contrast! On our precious visit we thoroughly enjoyed the meatball appetizer (scrumptious!) and a pizza special. I don't recall what it was, only that we both enjoyed it. The pizzas are small, so you can share some of their great appetizers and the pizza. The dining g room is spacious and high ceiling, but can be a bit noisy due to the hard surfaces. I highly recommend Ancora. I can't wait to go back and try their crab gnocchi!

Yelp
Ancora has the most amazing Neapolitan pizza- as good as you'll find in Italy. Super fresh and perfectly chewy crust. The service at the bar recently was pleasant and very attentive. I had the margherita with chili oil added which I highly recommend! Still thinking about it. Great wine by the glass selection too.

Elizabeth P.

Yelp
Probably my favorite pizza in Nola! The service was amazing. It's very clear that the staff have passion and care for each item on the menu. I went crazy choosing the basil italian soda but wow was it delicious. They feature lots of specials on the chalkboard and I can't remember what the bruschetta was called but they may not have anymore. Need to go back stat! The majority of their customers are repeat locals which speaks to their humble & friendly atmosphere.

Yelp
This has to be some of the best pizza in New Orleans!! Amazing but concise wine list, fun specials and the most amazing Neopoletana style pizza we've had so far in town. The cutest posters (all old school Amaro and Campari ads, classic) with a lovely classic pizza oven make you feel welcome but also you can't help but keep looking around for the charm! Crust on the pizza is amazing with quality ingredients. Service from Heather was impeccable as well. So lucky to have gotten to enjoy a late lunch/happy hour here. We will definitely be back :)
google avatar

Yelp
Cozy atmosphere. Nice staff. Pizza was really good just not great. My favorite was the Enzo Diavola, followed by the Quattro Formaggi and then the Funghi. Not of vast drink menu but enough beer and wine choices to satisfy most folks.

Yelp
If you want true and authentic Neapolitan Pizza in this city then Ancora is THE place to go. Absolutely spot on perfect "real" pizza done in an authentic way - The Diavola (with Italian sausage added ) is amazing and the Margherita is the prototypical DOP (IYKYK) style of Naples - 5 Stars PLUS
google avatar

Angie W.

Yelp
I've had Neapolitan pizza before while visiting family in Naples, Italy. Ancora is very close! The staff were friendly and helpful. The meat board appetizer was plenty for four people to enjoy. It includes Italian meats of the day - like salami, e.g., and a small pot of marinated olives and some kind of vegetable. We had a Quattro formaggi pizza and a supreme pizza. Also, the house salad was delicious with strawberries, cucumbers and marinated red onions. It's a full-size salad that we all shared. The location is near a parking lot on Freret. Very convenient. It's located inside an older building so it's rustic. Not fancy. Decent prices, though. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
Amazing pizza and great service! Recommend trying the Bianca, though the other options are also nice. I think they also let you purchase dough to go, but not 100% if they still offer that.

Kate L.

Yelp
really good food and service the pizza is soooo good! definitely recommend going here!
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
Experience overall was wonderful, we were able to be seated fairly quickly and had very attentive service- the cocktails were wonderful, highly recommend the specials on the blackboard! The appetizers and pizza were flavorful but did not leave you feeling heavy- the only regret was we did come hungry so we should have got a pizza each versus splitting one! The Diavola was a wonderful option if you enjoy a balanced kick in your pizza! Not pictured but would highly recommend the strawberry shortcake when available- it is not a traditional strawberry shortcake but such a showstopper to close the meal!

Brianna C.

Yelp
Absolutely the best Woodfire brick pizza I've ever had in my life. The appetizer is great. We had the bruschetta. Pizza was even better, heavily seasoned salami, fresh basil, and the crust was absolutely wonderful. Fresh ingredients grown across the street. The service was great too 10 out of 10, would recommend .
google avatar

Don T.

Yelp
The service was very good. The food was okay. We started with the meatballs and an order of the gnocchi. Both were very tasty. There were 4 of us so we ordered 4 different pizzas. All 4 were just okay. We may go back.

Yelp
Ancora was like my bonus round place in NOLA! The last meal stop before heading to the airport which is why I was eating dinner at 3 in the afternoon when it had just opened. This is Freret Street, uptown, close to Tulane University. It had a lot of shops that have outdoor patio seats along the street very cute! And not too busy for a Friday afternoon but then again it's only 3pm when I dined there and I kinda liked that I was the only one at bar seating after the first group left. The bartender, I forgot her name but she was so pleasantly sweet to talk to and we talked about how I used to live in Naples and about their stone oven imported from Naples. They are true VPN here and you can tell the difference in the dough and sauce that they are authentic Napoletana. I had the classic margherita pizza and their lightest beer on tap. Normally, I don't drink heavy hoppy beer with pizza but the closest they had to blonde ale and it wasn't too bad. I will definitely stop in next time I am in the city and take my loved ones here. This is the type of place where you know you are going to get a truest authentic Neapolitan style pizza and share stories with your server!

Jamie L.

Yelp
Great dinner! I loved the bruschetta! And, the pizza was fantastic!! I will definitely return again!!
google avatar

Lairyn K.

Yelp
While the flavor was wonderful, the toppings were minimal. There was 1 dob of mozz per slice, and barely any sauce. It seems like there is not consistency between pizzas. Will probably try again, but we were disappointed.
google avatar

Tina T.

Yelp
Very familiar, friendly restaurant with great service and fire food! I'm not much on pizza but this place was delicious! The sauce and ingredients tasted like it was just made with real ingredients!

David W.

Yelp
Good pizza but overpriced for the size you get. I got two pizza's (one at $16 and one at $21) but Ancora's pizzas are personal sized pizzas. For the price I paid I would've expected a lot larger of a pizza. On top of the already overpriced pizza for the quantity you get they also charge a 20% gratuity for all take out orders which makes no sense. I loved the crust on the Enzo pizza I ordered but the other one tasted like char (which don't get me wrong I like a nice char on my pizza but this was too much) because the bottom of the crust got a little too burnt. You can tell the ingredients they use are good quality but it was hard getting past the char flavor. By the end of it I paid around $48 for two thin personal sized pizzas (one of which was burnt) which left me and my fiancé still hungry afterwards.
google avatar

Nandi A.

Yelp
Definitely 10/10 experience! Service was amazing and very accommodating when it came to giving menu suggestions. The bruschetta is a must and I would also recommend getting a different pizza for every person so you can sample everything. My table also tried one of their specials which was a spiced okra dish. Absolutely delightful, and I'm not even an okra fan! The only downside was the dessert unfortunately. I was a chocolate cake with mascarpone icing, the description was great but the cake was so dense and gritty.

Kate S.

Yelp
Great service! Delicious food! Authentic Italian pizza with high quality ingredients!
google avatar

Ella J.

Yelp
Tried the margarita and Diavola pizzas. The margarita was really good, strong basil flavor and super fresh. The Diavola was good, a little underwhelming and lacking toppings. I loved the crust texture, super chewy and light. Service was quick and friendly and the food came out really fast. You can tell the ingredients and pizza is made fresh. I would recommend and good family friendly chill atmosphere!

Cal V.

Yelp
I'm sad to write this review because my wife and I were really excited to try this place for our date night. Came in on a Saturday night where it was at around 70% capacity, not too busy. We ordered the Saturday special which included the meatballs, house salad, and 2 pizzas. Our meatballs arrived quickly but were slightly warm, not hot. After waiting at least 45 minutes and receiving no attention from the server, our server finally came to follow up about the salad (which we had been trying to get his attention during those 45 minutes). Finally after waiting almost an hour the house salad came but lacked dressing and the apples were soggy. The tables around us received compensation via drinks or dessert for the wait on the food however we were not offered the same. They had been waiting as long if not longer. The pizza finally arrived after waiting over an hour. We got the margarita and meatball pizza which was quite delicious. Highly recommend sticking to the pizza menu only. Don't go on an empty stomach because your food may take a while.

Yelp
The pizza is amazing! It's a cute spot in a good location Uptown. We got the Diavola, and it was very fresh and flavorful. It tasted like a traditional Neapolitan style. The only downside to this place is that the waitress told us one pizza feeds two... If you have two hungry people this is not true. Maybe order two pizzas if you're a hungry couple

M L.

Yelp
Really good pizza and service. The prices seem high compared to what I'm used to, but otherwise it was very good.
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
The pizza here is very old school and traditional style. The crust was very good but the flavor of the toppings left a great deal to be desired. I had the margherita pizza and I found it to be very slack in the basil area. I would have to say that this was one of the blandest pizza's I've EVER had but the crust was fantastic so that it evens out to about a 3 star pizza. Pizza Delicious makes a far more fantastic and VERY flavorful margherita so I would greatly suggest that one over the version at Ancora. The service was acceptable and my pizza came out very fast. Ancora also makes all their cured meats in house but they seem to focus only on the pig to the exclusion of all other meats. The price for their one available (and small) single serving size of pizza is way too much for what it is. I would be willing to pay around $5 (like at happy hour at Domenica for very similar pizza) for this size and type of pizza and certainly not the $13 price. I probably won't be returning here as I find it extremely over priced for the very simple, basic, and cheap food that it is along with the bland toppings (at least for the margherita). My video review of Ancora is here: https://youtu.be/wzGTAs1bmnM

Yelp
Pandemic update I deserved some gnocchi for my recent pandemic birthday! So I ordered some to go... along with a specialty pizza and an old fashioned. You can call or order online from their website.... but I just stopped in, ordered and waited. They are doing limited dine in service but that isn't for me at the moment. My gnocchi was heaven. They are doing it as cacio y pepe and it was divine, like I want to drink the sauce divine... but instead I dipped my pizza crusts in it. Perfection! My pizza was a special with shaved garlic and fresh mozzarella and other deliciousness. But you can't really go wrong with any of their pizzas. As always my old fashioned was delicious. Social distancing is being enforced. Masks are required. Hand sanitizer is available. Staff is great as always.

Yelp
ThisplaceneverMISSES I love love LOVE coming here. The food is just so delicious and there's so much on the menu to try! I love the margherita pizza and the arancini (fried rice ball stuffed with cheese on top a pool of marinara) is my absolute favorite dish on the menu. The drinks are also SO amazing! The laughing water is usually my go-to when I visit, but I also love getting their custom cocktails that they change up often and is written on the chalk board by the bar. We also learned that all of their ingredients are locally grown ! And you can really tell the difference in the quality of their food, especially when you taste the tomatoes. Lastly, the owner and I'm assuming head chef is awesome. You'll often see him working the kitchen or walking around greeting guests (he tells us hey every time we go). The whole experience is just great and I know for a fact I'll continue to come back here for as long as I live here!

Jeff A.

Yelp
I gave this restaurant a two star rating because the pizza was actually pretty good. The problem was the value. They put a 20% tip on a to go order, I've never heard of that. The pizza was tiny. I'm guessing about 10 inches so for about $24 I got a tiny pepperoni pizza that didn't even fill me up.

Nancy H.

Yelp
SOOO delicious! I cannot recommend this establishment enough. I personally recommend the gnocchi to start and then the Margherita Pizza!!! This place is criminally underrated please go give them a visit

Yelp
Loved this place when I went to New Orleans, best Pizza, incredible pizza happy hour.
google avatar

Ada L.

Yelp
Best pizza in the city of New Orleans. Hands down. Great service as well. I wish I lived closer!

sarah b.

Yelp
Visited on Sunday at 430 pm. Only one other table of guests. Well staffed but waitress was very short with us almost rude. She never came to get our pizza order. We had to ask to be waited on. The arancini app lacked flavor. It did not seem like risotto at all ( interested to see what the recipe is or if it bought in and frozen). Deep fried outer layer was too tough to eat. No one finished a single one. Sauce lacked flavor as well. Ordered kids cheese with olives and fungi. Both where kind of meh. Crust was unimpressive and overall lacked seasoning. ESP since the fungi pizza was $22. Not worth the time or money.

Delta L.

Yelp
Best pizza in New Orleans hands down. The gnocchi is incredible. I highly recommend the Olive Oil + Black Pepper ice cream as well!

Vicki B.

Yelp
My daughter brought me here for a special birthday dinner on my trip to New Orleans. We started with a bottle of Barolo (my favorite!) and shared the crab gnocchi and arancini. We all were obsessed with how creamy, pillowy, and flavorful the gnocchi was! You could tell the crab was fresh and real, and made us want to lick every bit of sauce from the bowl! Our meatball pizza was divine. The crust was just as mouthwatering as the meat, cheese, and sauce. For dessert, my daughter surprised me with my very favorite ice cream flavor--olive oil and black pepper! I can't find this classic anywhere and the fact that it was made in house made it extra special. I can't wait to come back again on my next visit!
google avatar

Timothy M.

Yelp
First time visit. Ambiance is certainly nothing special. Service was decent. Drinks were decidedly poor. Their version of a Sazerac was undrinkable. The crabmeat gnocchi was good, but the shrimp appetizer was bland. The veggie supreme pizza was mediocre, with barely any toppings and a decent crust. One place to take off the list.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
I was quite impressed with the Neapolitan Pizza! The best in the city. If you do not know what Neapolitan Pizza is, and if you have never been to Italy you should not comment. This type of pizza is the closest to Italian Neapolitan. If you're seeking NY thin crust and/or Chicago deep dish this is not the place for you. Go somewhere else. Again, you should not post negative comments if you've never been to NY, Chicago, or Italy and experienced pizzas from those regions. Thank you Chef and your team!!! Amazing Neapolitan Pizza!
google avatar

Jose G.

Yelp
This place has the best authentic pizza napolitana. Wood burning pizza oven, great atmosphere, great service...the best in town. Jose Garcia

John N.

Yelp
Incredibly friendly & welcoming local vibe. Server was so kind and helpful, someone who had mastery & joy in their work. The food was delicious; I intended to just eat half of the 'za but of course polished off the whole plate.
google avatar

Stephen H.

Yelp
Food was good. Service was ok. What was off-putting was watching one of them put our salad on a chair by the window and take pictures for social media bent over it before serving it to us. When I called them out on Instagram, my comment was deleted. If I were taking a pic for the gram, I would have served it to the staff, or at least been subtle about it. If I had been called out for it, I would have engaged instead of deleting. Tacky, inappropriate and immature. https://www.instagram.com/p/CaszGWelhAZ/?utm_medium=copy_link

Yelp
Excellent woodfire pizza! We had Margherita and Eggplant Special - loved both. Also recommend the meatball appetizer and citrus-y house salad. Wait staff was lovely and attentive. We will come back next visit with our daughter at college.

Michael B.

Yelp
If you have ever been to Naples Italy you will know what you are getting into as soon as you see the oven! Fantastic pizzas all around! Anyone who knows or wants a great pizza in New Orleans needs to take a few minutes trip, just outside of the downtown area, and stop by and grab a tasty pizza! You will not be disappointed!

Bart R.

Yelp
Excellent pizza. I don't tend to go here though because the wine selection isn't very good, and it's expensive. They gouge you for a single glass of wine, and the bartenders both times I've been there hustled me to get a better grade wine, one saying the wine was fresh when you could tell it was a day old. I don't like to be hustled, and even the price of the wine smacks of disrespect. They can easily fix this if they value repeat customers.
google avatar

Tristen W.

Yelp
Ancora has always been one of my favorite restaurants in the Freret neighborhood! The staff is super welcoming and the pizza is always fresh out of the oven. Their pizza is more of a traditional Italian Neopolitan style instead of NY or Chicago style. I ordered the Margherita Pizza while my friend had the Bianca Pizza, and both were delicious as always. I loved the pizza crust; it's satisfyingly chewy and has the perfect amount of char. The Margherita is a great option if you're looking for something more simple. Ancora also offers a weekly pizza happy hour (different from regular happy hour) every Wednesday from 4-5, during which you can order select pizzas for $9. I would definitely recommend Ancora for any occasion and I'm definitely becoming a regular here!
google avatar

Caleb M.

Yelp
Fantastic Margherita, the meatball pie was good (if a little under-cheesed), and the arancini had a salty, crispy exterior that smacked of parmesan. $9 pies during happy hour are a solid deal, and worth coming in for. Would like to be back to try the bruschetta and gnocchi, both of which looked awesome.
google avatar

Devan M.

Yelp
Was visiting my aunt and uncle in New Orleans and I am so glad they took us here. The house salad alone would keep me coming back endlessly. On top of that everything was absolutely delicious and the staff exuded ridiculous kindness which included our angel of a server, Josie. We got a few pizzas including the special with blueberries, ricotta and fennel sausage which was incredible! Only complaint would be that the gnocchi appetizer was too small, at least to have to share. Will definitely be looking forward to returning to Ancora on our next visit.

Kerry G.

Yelp
Oh my world! I've been eating keto for the last seven months I've lost right at 48 pounds and I was ready to eat some good pizza. My daughter took me there and order. I'm a Cajun fella and eaten good food my whole life that's why I had to go on keto but this place WOW! Just WOW unbelievably delicious. That mushroom pizza with that white buttery sauce was off the chart and those little potato thing with crab meat. I don't remember the name of it but it was so delicious I didn't have the nerve to tell my mom I ate something better then she cooked

Elizabeth O.

Yelp
You will wait a very long time for the pizza that you overpaid for, BUT it's the best pizza I've had in New Orleans. You can buy a 12-inch that ranges from about $14 to almost $30 (I think the special was $28) and it can easily be eaten by one person. But the crust is so perfect! We had the bruschetta app, which was delicious, although it could've used more tomatoes and basil. My rosemary spritz didn't taste like rosemary. All of that I will overlook because of the pizza. It's worth it.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
A visit here was a reminder of how long it had been since I'd had a legit Neapolitan-style margherita, and how much I'd missed it. If you haven't had the pleasure, the salty taste with a bit of char on the crust, the crust deliciously crisp on the outside and soaked from the fresh mozzarella on the inside, and the bite of fresh basil will probably win you over. Their menu is quite short, so if you're not up for the margherita you'll only have a few options. I wasn't enthused with the daily specials and such they had on this occasion. I was, however, pleased that on a quiet night my pizza was made in less time than it took me to read through the menu and decide to order it (with a good oven, Neapolitan style cooks very fast). All in all, I was satisfied.
google avatar

Mickey J.

Yelp
Went here with a couple buddies off a recommendation, and let me tell you - it did not disappoint! The gnocchi was the best I've had, the tempura fried brussel sprouts were out of this world, and the wood burning brick over had our pizza tasting magnificent. Josie and Marin were fantastic waitresses, those girls deserve a raise! I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Wonderful to be back at Ancora. We love their unique Italian wine selection and wood fired pizzas. The staff effortlessly made our visit memorable. Austin made some wonderful drinks and recommendations.
