18 Fantastic Mexican Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul

"Follow Nicollet Avenue all the way south to Richfield for a stop at Andale Taqueria & Mercado, one of the Cities’ most-loved taquerias. From the specialty menu, try the sopa de mariscos, made with crab legs, squid, and other seafood in a tomato-based broth, or crispy, golden chimichangas. Andale made an appearance on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in 2020: Guy Fieri endorses chefs and owners Fernando Mellado-Barboza and Jorge Rangel Castro’s al pastor tacos, their marinade made with dense blocks of achiote paste, guajillo peppers, cumin, and orange juice." - Eater Staff

Yelp
Food and customer service were very good!! I had steak and chicken tacos. The tacos were bigger then expected and the meat was fresh

Yelp
This has been my comfort taco spot for a while not only due to its location but also due to the fact that their lengua and cabeza tacos continue to be excellent after so many years! I have witnessed the same kinds experience quality decreases elsewhere and I am happy about how Andale continues to keep it together. Specifically, my rating is based on my favorite tacos, lengua and cabeza. I am always given a good amount of meat whenever I would order tacos here, and the tacos are still reasonably priced given the amount. There's a good amount of cilantro and onions as well, and the sauces always elevated the flavors. Whenever I have no idea what to eat, I would drop by here for good comfort food. I also enjoy the chicken tamales here because they are filling and have a good amount of chicken meat in the masa hariña. However, honestly speaking, I have barely ordered anything else here, so I think my rating is a bit based on incomplete experiences, but I'd at least like viewers to know what my feelings are! Of course, I will continue to return here because of how much Andale has been able to satisfy my cravings!

Yelp
Mexican places to eat now exist everywhere, I like the products and the food, I am Mexican by birth, an engineer by profession.I moved to Mexico 20 years ago, what I don't like about this place is the furniture. They make a lot of profit and the owners do not invest so that the customer is happy. That's why my rating. I prefer to go to a place that sells Mexican food and I am comfortable. Nowadays, many options. I traveled in Mexico almost all states and living in 5th of them, I traveled Europe and South Korea, Also Costa Rica, and people needs to go places are enjoyable and happy this site I named the poor restaurant, o el restaurante de los pobres para el cliente.

Yelp
Soooo delish! Our order was actually take out this time but we enjoyed it so much that we will absolutely be recommending this spot and very much look forward to dining in soon! Thanks for a tasty, filling, and affordable meal, Andale!

Yelp
Bright, tastefully colored and clean restaurant. Had no idea that it was on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. So cool! They serve breakfast all day. Our order taker was very thorough and was quick to head out and clean in the dining hall. She gave us water cups and refilled the dispenser. We decided to share a fajita combo plate that had chicken, beef and shrimp. Everything was really good except one chicken piece was gummy like it wasn't cooked enough. Everything else was perfect and fed two. I'm so full!

Yelp
Friends introduce this place to me , it's got pretty good , carne asada and it has been one of the best I've had around the metro area but it's more of a cafeteria style place, service was nice and helpful, I LOVED the tamarind juice but horchata no bueno .. I am not a fan of boxed horchata , it's not home made.. the tortas ( sandwiches ) are huge ! I do recommend if you're feeling hungry!! Over all I had a good experience here and the food was good .

Yelp
Great Mexican joint. Stopped by here with friends after hitting the gym and wanted to get some food after 8pm. The parking lot is small and tends to fill up during the day so was always on the bucket list to check out. I'm glad I did! It's across the street from Menards tucked between a gas station and a grocery store, so make sure you pay attention to which door to enter. Alberto at the front desk was a friendly nice guy with a wonderful smile :) Menudo: It's negative in Minnesota, so that means hot soup season for me. This dish hit the spot in all accounts on my book. It had a rich beefy broth filled with tripe and other pieces off bone. The peppery garlicky flavor was very comforting and brought heat to my bones. It comes with the accoutrements of cilantro, onion, jalapeños, and lime with choice of flour or corn tortillas. Since it's a soup, it's ready fairly quickly so the wait won't be long. Would like to check out the other items in the menu.

Yelp
Outstanding food and service! Andale is our go-to for some super delicious authentic Mexican food!!! Their carnitas are muy bueno, especially in a burrito. Thanks again for being consistently awesome, see you soon Andale

Yelp
Love this place very much thank you Guy Ferreri from the Food Network for the recommendation. Being from California it's hard to find authentic Mexican food and this place is very close.

Yelp
Great place to stop in and get some food. The service is over the counter and they now have an option to use a touch screen kiosk to order. There is a decent amount of both indoor and outdoor seating but it can fill up quickly depending on the time of day. The food here is so good and I love the flavor. The only downside was the chicken in the taco was pretty tough but the flavor made up for it. The tamale was also stuffed with veggies and cheese with the perfect amount of spice! The only downside to Andale is the parking lot. It fills up quickly and can be a haarlem to get in and out of - but it is worth it! The market is also a gem as it has both fresh items and Mexican specialty shelf items.

Yelp
I gotta be honest - I sought this place out after having it recommended to me and also reading the reviews... but I think maybe after waiting so long for the opportunity I may have had too high of expectations. It certainly is authentic from a Mexican food lens - but I really didn't fall in love like I had hoped. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and bought a big side of their red "hot" salsa and chips. To put it bluntly - my enchiladas didn't pack much flavor... and then when I tried to spice things up with the red salsa, I was kind of offput by the flavor/texture. Not my favorite - even if it did add a little heat - and it was so watery that it barely felt like salsa. Challenging to get a decent amount on a chip and complete the to mouth transfer without dripping all over. If you are looking to skip on a TJ's or TBell and want something that feels authentic - this place is interesting. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing and I should have dove into some tacos? I've just had better elsewhere and with the amount of options in the area I'm probably not making the extra effort to cross 35W to visit again.

Yelp
Stopped in over the Fourth of July holiday weekend and really enjoyed the patio. I've been here a few times over the years and the food is delicious and caters to various dietary needs. However I feel like the worst part about Andale's is the parking lot. It's so small and it fills up quickly, there have even been times where we've contemplated parking across the street. Anyway we ordered the alambre, tacos, flan and the Jamaica. The restaurant itself is small so it does take some time to get your food. however the employees are nice and they use a number system that is called through the loudspeakers throughout the restaurant. There were beautiful flowers around the patio and right next door is the market. We picked up some pan dulce, delicious and fluffy! Be mindful the space is small but there is adequate seating, the food is delicious, and the service is just as good!

Yelp
Another foodie spot I had to try. Apparently this place was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives but I did not know about that. My Best Buy Tech told me about it as I was looking for authentic non-chain spot to try in the area. He even gave me tips about why I should not park in the lot outside the restaurant because according to his experience accidents frequently happen there. I appreciated this advice because it served me well when I requested my uber driver to come and pick me up. I am not sure what I expected but it was not a cozy sit down spot but more of a fast food feel. I was feeling quite explorative and thought to mix it up. So, I ordered the shrimp quesadilla and what I thought was their egg nog drink. But after my order number got called I got a Mexican egg breakfast and the shrimp quesadilla. I was perplexed because I only ordered one meal to go and asked about the egg nog drink. The staff informed me that they thought I ordered the Mexican egg breakfast and the egg nog is actually a gelatin. With that I did not pursue the egg nog drink anymore and walked away with my two orders. Then I went to the market to get some groceries. Its cool that they have a grocery store next door

Yelp
I dont get over to this part of town often but whoever I have a chance I get some food here . Some of the best tacos around . Like line out the door good!
google avatar

Lucy N.

Yelp
Simply the best tacos in town. Low price, consistent quality and fast service. This place is super popular and for good reason. I prefer getting take out, or sitting outside in the summer. This is my go-to for a quick lunch or dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
We love this place. The parking lot fills up fast. This visit we tried the Taco Salad, Al Pastor Suizo Burrito and an Al Pastor Quesadilla. Everything was excellent. The Al Pastor here is very flavorful and shouldn't be missed. All food is made to order and they offer online ordering and takeout too.
google avatar

Leah M.

Yelp
Has been on our list for a while. Very close to the airport so we stopped on our way out of town. It is a very small taco restaurant with limited seating and even smaller parking lot. But totally worth the stop!! We got the al pastor tacos, chicken enchiladas, and chicken quesadilla. Everything was so flavorful and made to order. It was a little bit of a wait for the food but it was because it was made fresh! You could taste the authenticity, even the chicken quesadilla was seasoned perfectly! All the tres leches cakes looked awesome but we were so full afterwards, will be back next time to try! Definitely worth a stop for a quick bite!

Yelp
10/10 - hands down, my favorite Mexican restaurant in MN. First of all, look at the size of that thing!! The burrito is filled with rice, beans, a protein of your choice, deep fried and smothered in queso. The fact that the veggies are on the side, shows you how massive this burrito is. Service was quick and extremely accommodating. They also offer outdoor seating over summer. Ask for their hot sauce, it's legit hot as heck! The only downside to this dish is that you can't eat it like a regular burrito (I mean you can, but it'll be extra messy with the queso on the outside). Aside from the delicious food, their menu is huge! Grab an horchata and thank me later. Lastly, don't forget to check out the supermarket next door and grab a couple paletas.

Yelp
I have eaten here several times , and find it very enjoyable each time . I have found their prices have rose, which is a bummer . Be prepared for it to ALWAYS be busy , I have parked at SA and Menards and never had an issue , but it definitely could be , but a tip if you want to be a little risky haha . There parking lot is tiny . One of my all time favorites is their TAMALES great texture, and flavor . Be sure to ask for extra green sauce, it's my favorite . This time I had the nachos with carnitas . I got it for carry out , and asked for several things on the side , and they did that with no problem . These were loaded with pickles jalapeños , crema and tomatoes . The chips were crunchy . The queso was on the side , and was still oooey and gooey when I got home . The carnitas were a little greasy this time , but overall good. I will definitely get these again .

Yelp
I've tried to come here once last week but the line was out the door and seat was taken. I decided to come through at lunch time today, 12:30 pm. I pull up, the parking lot is just about full but someone was coming out and I was the first person there, I beat the line of traffic with the turn signal on comically from the other direction trying to get into the lot. He shoots, he scores! Even before I get to the door, the smell of perfection hits my nose. I do t care if it's cold out here in Minnesota, I could stand here and enjoy the smell of flavorful bliss permeating the air alone. But I'm hungry so I go in. LONNNGGG line in front of me and every table occupied, I can tell everyone is enjoying themselves. I'm a picture man, so I had to make a game time decision on what to order because the long line in front of me was moving fast and before I knew it was my time to order. Went for an Al pastor burrito. The wait time was about 6 minutes until they called #29, that's me! Took my order to go. The burrito is huge. It's a little much for the beans, kinda overpowering of every other flavor but I got the tomatillo sauce and it makes a difference! Now, it's only 40 degrees outside. It's cold for real, but you know it's a good restaurant if 1) Guy Fierri visited and gave his seal of approval AND 2) brothers are outside eating their food on the patio- you could see there breathe every time they took a bite haha! I will be back!!

Yelp
Wow. I travel all over the country for work and I'm constantly looking for great places to eat when I'm on the road. Apparently, I need to spend more time looking for great food when I'm home in the Twin Cities because I had no idea that this gem was here! I have generally assumed that I'm not going to find great, authentic Mexican food unless at I'm just south of St. Paul, but now I have options beyond Cesar Chavez St. I will admit that I was little thrown off by the ordering system at first since someone was taking orders directly when I walked in and then they disappeared. I almost left and then noticed the kiosk. So easy - loved it! In fact, the ordering system might have been TOO easy - I didn't spend nearly enough time looking at all the options on the first trip. A couple of tamales and a couple of al pastor tacos and I was done. It wasn't until I sat down and started looking around to see so many incredible options. While the tamales are still high on my list, the mole enchiladas and the alambres are incredible. Best of all, there are SO many wonderful desert options waiting next door in the Mercado after every meal. My only regret is that it took me so long to realize that this place existed!

Mark S.

Yelp
I was always a big fan of this place but something happened and personally for me it went south. I ordered the enchiladas and they had very little flavor - either not enough green sauce or the head chef was taking shortcuts with the ingredients The thing that bothered me the most was that there was hardly any meat inside. Pork shoulder is not expensive so it's hard to understand why they were being cheap with the meat. I also didn't think the refried beans tasted very good. Lots of refried beans but almost no flavor. I'm not going back

Yelp
Super authentic, high quality and fresh food for those who enjoy Mexican cuisine! ***The market side provides very fresh products that are prepared next door in the restaurant. Was visiting Minneapolis so only had 2 visits to this place... but it left an impression despite the brief time Food: Alambre - 5/5 - the shrimp alambre is exceptional; a must-try! Sopa de mariscos - 5/5 - rich taste very good; also a must Pozole - 3.5/5 or 4/5 - the style was not what we are used to... it was oily and somewhat bland Chilaquiles con cecina - 4.5/5 - very good; definitely a must try breakfast dish Ambience: The restaurant is simple designed, modern clean look with the glass walls; small-medium sized for seating. Service: Fast and friendly

Yelp
The food is phenomenal. I came here on a whim and I got the enchiladas with their spicy red salsa. Man it delivered! It was filling and definitely spicy. I got it on the recommendation from the person taking my order and I don't regret it. They have a decent amount of seating and a little outdoor patio as well. My biggest complaint is their parking is too small lol. This is such a popular place and for good reason that finding parking is the hardest part of getting here. But it's worth all of that and more.

Sue A.

Yelp
Great food. We were intonation for a graduation. Found this place after looking at reviews. It did not disappoint. I had 2 tacos - 1 with carnitas and one al pastor. Bot were fresh, hot and flavorful. My husband had a burrito made with carnitas and also really liked it. And it was quite large. We will be back
google avatar

Cathy J.

Yelp
This was my first visit with my daughter in law who is wheelchair bound. My daughter in law had the fish tacos which were very tasty and I had the carnitas burrito which was plentiful and delicious. There are so many items to try that we will just have to go back and try more. It's a small restaurant with seating inside and out. There is also a mercado which was busy the entire time we were there. We ate outside on the patio which had plenty of seating. I can see why it's so popular. The food was fresh with ample portions. You order at the counter and they call you when it's ready. I would have given Andale four stars if not for a couple of issues: The inside isn't very handicap friendly. We were grateful to have people hold the doors (there are two with a twist and turn) for us upon entering. The parking, as other reviews have pointed out. We were fortunate (if you can all it that) to have been able to park in a handicap spot right in front. The parking lot is less than a postage stamp with one way in and one way out. It's located at Hwy 494 and Lyndale - a very busy area. I recommend parking across the street at Menard's! It's easier to get in and out.

Yelp
Yes, just yes! Go, eat a lot of amazing food, check out the store next door and thank me later.
google avatar

Yelp
Out of the area. Came to this place via Yelp. Awesome Mexican food. Service great. Food even better.
google avatar

Rebeca C.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and I don't plan on stopping! This is the best authentic Mexican restaurant in the area. As a Mexican my go to dish is the tacos Al pastor and this place is pretty dang close to getting it to taste like a taco from mexico. Love this place and can't wait to come back
google avatar

Eduardo G.

Yelp
Food is really good. I'm actually making a very extensive research to find out where people can find the best Mexican Northern style steak burrito in the Twin Cities. Andale is so far near the top. The service is not great and the employees are mean and they charge for literally everything including limes... like wth?! The ambience is ok. The only reason why they didn't get 4 stars is because of their employees and how they charge about everything... including onions on food? WTH?!!!
google avatar

Neil S.

Yelp
This is as close as I've found to the taco shops I lived off of while living in California. I can't speak to the other items, but the street tacos are authentic - you get a tortilla, meat, onion and cilantro. Simple, and under $3 which seems fair for where we're at. Lots of options to choose from for proteins as well, though no mushroom/other vegetarian options as far as I could see for the tacos. We went bonkers and got the Pastor, Carnitas en Adobo, Lengua, Fish (fried, wish they had grilled), Shrimp, Arabe, and Barbacoa. These were all good, though I'd say the Pastor and Carnitas stood out for their seasoning and the Barbacoa fell a bit short as it was drier than expected. Fortunately that's where the salsas come in. The tortilla chips were also very good; we ended up sated from the tacos so I made chilaquiles with them and it turned out great. Highly recommend overall for your cheap taco fix. Ambiance felt very reminiscent of a SoCal taqueria oas well; the place was packed which is a good sign. we didn't check out the market next door but will the next time we visit, it looks like it has a lot of imports from Mexico and Central America so we're feeling auspicious.
google avatar

Malissa L.

Yelp
Amazing food! Found out about this place from my uber driver and he definelty deserved his 5 stars as do this place! Food reminded me of home. Flavor on point and real able priced! There's also a Kiosk to order food inside of the line is too long or if you need more time to decide when ordering without the repeated, would you like anything else . I highly recommend this place! Nice patio to sit and eat and store next door has all the mexican baked goods and candies too!
google avatar

Brett D.

Yelp
The service was a bit confusing as the line was basically to the door and it was hard to get in far enough to read the menu that extended the length of wall before we could actually get up to order. They also use a text system to tell you when your order was ready, but I never got the text until 2 hours after we had left. Other than these problems, the food was great. It was one of our favorite meals we've had. A great lunch spot to cure a Mexican food craving. The seating is a bit cramped and we'd probably order our food to go next time, but the staff was nice and created a good atmosphere.
google avatar

Chad F.

Yelp
One of the few authentic Mexican restaurants around. I lunch here about once a month. I love their Al Pastor meat, and usually get a Chimichanga. I've also enjoyed their burritos and enchiladas. Get yourself a glass of Horchata or Jarritos. I usually stop by the market next door to get fresh tortilla chips and salsa - my kids love them. The parking lot is small, sometimes I need to find a street parking or borrow a spot at Menards across the street. Picture of the last chimichanga included...
google avatar

Paula C.

Yelp
They did not miss with their authentic Mexican flavors especially on their tacos I love that their menu features a lot of different meat options and their food is affordable yet insanely good! Our faves were the Al Pastor, Barbacoa and Fish tacos topped with their house salsas

Cassandra W.

Yelp
Meat (chicken and steak) was very dry. I spent over $100 there on my order and when I asked for some mayonnaise for the sandwich they stopped speaking English and now they don't understand but know to tell me it will be extra which I said fine. I then asked for some type of sauce, salsa, anything to help with the meat being so dry their response was that will be extra as well. So what comes with the items I bought besides extra dry and bland meat and rice? The only reason they got a 2 star in the end is because I kept insisting to see the manager because I couldn't believe the service I was receiving. He did attempt to assist me and I did pay for ALL the sauces and creams to help to make the food at least edible. My advice RUN somewhere else or cook it yourself and save yourself time and heartache!!
google avatar

Alyson M.

Yelp
Yet another DDD stop checked off the list! If you're looking for authentic, this is it! Not entirely sure what more information I can give that hasn't been said in the other many reviews though! Kind of a dinner kind of feel, authentic flavors, tasty corn tortillas! And the store next door is chock full of authentic goodies to bring home and try! Definitely glad they tore down that Ember's to build this place!!
google avatar

Kimberly R.

Yelp
They have amazing food which you can tell that I'm busy they always are. I love getting in the chorizo and the barbacoa tastes like the most tender roast. Also can't go around with the carnitas.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Soooo delicious! I don't know how many times I drove past it and thought that I should come back to try it and I finally did - and did not regret the decision. The restaurant portion is to the left half of the building and the grocery store is to the right. You order from the counter (the menu is large and above your head, in English, so you don't have to worry if you don't speak Spanish!). There are tables inside and outside and when your meal is called you pick it up at the counter. Lots of people seemed to be getting food to go. We got ours to eat there. It's served on plates on a cafeteria like tray with plastic utensils and napkins off to the side. They have a lot of different dishes to choose from and tons of meat options. It was relatively standard in that there wasn't anything fancy about the preparation, but it was really tasty. We got chips and salsa verde (definitely had a little bit of an after kick and a big portion). My husband got the cuban torta - which he said was amazing; it was a really big sandwich! He also got a taco that he said was okay, nothing special. I got the chimichanga with carne asada and *sigh* it was just what I wanted. The sauce on top was so good - I think the same you'd get with chilaquiles. We also got a side of beans and rice, with a large and small horchata. The horchata was *chefs kiss* some of the best we've had in the twin cities. The large was only like 50 cents more than the small but 3x the size so I would totally recommend splurging! I also went next door to the grocery store and got a slice of chocolate tres leches - $6 with tax; it ended up seeming to be the size of two portions and really good too. Worth it, in my opinion, especially when you consider a slice of tres leches at a sit down restaurant would probably be $7-8 for a smaller piece. Total for our meal was somewhere around $50-55 - a little expensive for Mexican food, I thought, but the portions were huge and delicious so I know this will become a regular spot for us.

Yelp
Delicious, authentic Mexican food! Best Mexican food I've had in MN since moving here from TX. Will definitely be putting this place on repeat!
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
There is a reason this place has so many great reviews. Because they deserve it....the food is outstanding authentic mexican fare. Even though it was lunchtime and the parking lot was packed(always a good sign)the food came out quickly and piping hot. I'd eat here 3 days a week if i lived in close proximity..
google avatar

Notola Y.

Yelp
Fantastic food. Fast casual kind of counter set up, you order and they call or text you when it's ready. The tacos, fajitas, and horchata were amazing. I recommend definitely stopping by for lunch or dinner if you're in the area. The carne asada fajitas are my favorite although the Mexican chicken quesadilla is a close second.

T T.

Yelp
Chicken rice and beans dry!!! Not worth the money. Asked for tacos and burritos and they charged me for plates instead of individual items then when ask why, they act like they don't understand. Too much drama for a $13 burrito I could have made (13) at home.

Cueviko 1.

Yelp
the atmosphere was amazing we come from two hours away looking for a good place to eat and it did not disappoint by far one of the best. Great workers they are extremely clean fast and hardworking 10/10 would reccommend.
google avatar

Jenny R.

Yelp
Busy place but they have a variety of food. We usually get barbacoa or carnitas. I like the chile relleno too. Tamales are a bit dry. They have a lot of other items too (spices, drinks, even piñatas!).
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible food. Loved it all. Great veg options. Best for take out. Handy mercado next door.

Yelp
Anyone else pass Andale when running to Menards and think - I have GOT to try their food?! If you're hesitating at all, please please try their food, it won't disappoint! I've now had their burritos, their pozole, and a few of their desserts. All have been very flavorful and well cooked, and with generous portions! I love that they have a marketplace that's attached and is full of incredible goodies at prices you cannot beat. $3 for tres leches? What? Fresh pastries? Frozen tamales from their kitchen? Need I say more? As for the service, it's been fast each time I've been there, with maybe a 10 minute wait tops when there was a line. Can't wait to be back again
google avatar

Kaylee S.

Yelp
One of our go-tos! Everything is delicious but some of our favorites: flautas, al pastor tacos, chorizo burrito, pozole, chips & salsa. Love Andale!

Sally G.

Yelp
The fish tacos were done very nicely Sauces were good Tripas we're a bit chewy and lacking a robust flavor but were cooked perfectly Lengua lacking flavors in meat or would have been ranked dove stars

Yelp
OMG THE TAMALES FOR ONLY $2.49 UNBELIEVABLE BIGGER THEN PASTELES ....My daughter had a chimichanga and My husband said Fish Tacos were a hit... and my younger kids I didn't think they were going to eat all those Taco (shredded beef) with the raw onion and cilantro garnish but they are 2 each and asked for more! We will be going back! more so too because the staff are very welcoming!
