"A restaurant opened by Wes Avila in Chinatown, Los Angeles, known for its eclectic menu, which closed in 2023." - Mona Holmes
"I’m not normally one to go to a restaurant the day after it opens (at least, not since I stopped writing about food for a living), but on Sunday, I found myself at Angry Egret Dinette, the new Chinatown spot from former Guerrilla Tacos mastermind Wes Avila. He’s serving a small menu of tortas - that he doesn’t want to call tortas - from an equally small window, including The Whittier Blvd, with fall-apart beef suadero, horseradish cream, avocado, queso fresco, and serranos. It checked all my Perfect Sandwich boxes - not too many ingredients, excellent structural integrity, solid spread-to-filling ratio, etc - and I definitely would’ve tried one of the other options, but had already committed to walking down the street for a burger and fries at Amboy - a move I in no way regret. - JBS" - the infatuation los angeles crew
"On Thursday evening, Angry Egret Dinette chef and owner Wes Avila announced that its final day of service will be December 31, 2023. Avila made the announcement via Instagram, marking another LA favorite closing its doors in a stunning year of restaurant closings." - Mona Holmes
"Chef Wes Ávila’s latest venture focuses on Mexican-American tortas packed with soft scrambles, low and slow-cooked meats, some burritos, and whatever he feels like adding to the menu. Right now he’s offering the Chicano-style tamales he’s become well known for on cooking shows, like beef with red chile, duck tamales, and squash, cheese, and rajas (chile stripes). Check the website ahead of time to see which tamales are available." - Bill Esparza
"If you’re in the mood to eat something pan-fried, cheese-filled, or just extremely satisfying for breakfast or lunch, Angry Egret has you covered. This order-at-the-window Mexican spot inside Mandarin Plaza serves brunch-y comfort foods that are just a bit too much, in all the right ways. Run by the former chef of Guerilla Tacos, Angry Egret's all-day menu includes one LA's best breakfast burritos, a two-fisted breakfast torta, some fluffy waffles, and a solid plate of chilaquiles you can eat beneath a foliage-shaded canopy.
