"Grand Marais’ Angry Trout Cafe leans into classic Northwoods flavors — think salads topped with blueberries; tart cranberry horseradish compote spread on smoked whitefish; hand-harvested wild rice; and maple cream sodas made with pure syrup and soda water. The fish, of course, is fresh-caught from Superior, and the patio is a lovely place to watch the moon rise over the harbor. Pack a sweater for the chilly evening breeze off the lake." - Justine Jones, Eater Staff

Read a couple reviews here that mentioned rude staff so was a little wary but I'm glad I went! Staff could not have been nicer; the two hostesses and the server were very bright and conversant without seeming phony. The atmosphere was casual and dignified; it was very easy for my mom and I to talk and hear each other. There was plenty of room between the tables and we were seated in a prime spot right on the bay where we could easily see the sailboats and lighthouses. The food was fabulous! One patron who had dined before us said the food really tasted like it was made with love and I completely agree. I had the grilled herring with pasta and a side salad while my mom had the fried trout with soup and waffle fries. My dish was perfect and I'm very picky about eating fish! Mom really liked the soup which was essentially chicken soup with lemon and dill as well as the waffle fries which were very light and fluffy. She did say the fish was a little dry though. Both meals had generous portions which we couldn't finish and brought home. The price came to about eighty three dollars which does include a twenty percent gratuity. So, it ain't cheap! I feel, given the outstanding staff, the overall ambiance, meal quality and portion size as well as the restaurants living-wage policy for its employees that the cost is justified. 11/10 would recommend!

Ate here with my spouse, The food was good but was a pretty limited portion for the price, and the fries tasted like they had been frozen, not fresh. The view was great, but service was really bad. We were given our food and had to ask for utensils and didn't get it for 20 minutes. Had to ask three times. Their custom drinks were neat but nothing to write home about, I would have rather just had a normal diet coke.

Had dinner at the Angry Trout. Our wait time was not bad for a Saturday. We started with a half carafe of wine and the fried shitake mushrooms. Hubby ordered the fried herring, and it came with a salad and wild rice. I got the grilled whitefish that came with pasta and a salad. We finished off with the Kladdkaka. Everything was cooked perfectly and was very delicious. Serve was good and we received our food fast.

It has been the best fish and chips I've ever had. Their cod fish and the white fin were amazing. Everything is super fresh and delicious. Though it might be a little pricey, it's worth every bite. If you're ever around the area, I highly recommend you stop by.

My guy and I visit Grand Marais every February. We always visit The Angry Trout at least once or twice while in town. We both love this place so much. Not only is the location absolutely epic, everything else is as well. They have an excellent seasonal menu. We always go in the winter so the selection of fish is a bit different than the seasons with local fresh caught fish. I am a vegetarian, so I don’t partake in their specialties. Daniel is always satisfied with his fish dish. They don’t have a wide variety for a vegetarian to eat, but what they do offer is lovely. I definitely recommend trying to arrive at an off time. Otherwise you will definitely have to wait for a table. The town is mostly locals in the winter as far as I can tell. They fill up and have a wait even during non tourist season. I bet they have insane summers. I can’t wait to return next year. I really hope that they consider adding breakfast again. Last year they tried it out and it was delicious. There really isn’t any good options for breakfast in town.

Excellent food and service at a popular place with a great view of the Grand Marais harbor! A very nice spot with chairs to sit outside by the harbor while you wait for a table. Rice fritters, chicken dinner, Angry Trout Sundae, and Kladdkaka were all excellent, especially rich and intensely chocolatey Kladdkaka, a must-try! Loved all the accompanying sauces with everything, and especially enjoyed the stained glass throughout the restaurant. Maple cream soda and a couple glasses of wine hit the spot, as well. People complaining about the 20% service charge are missing out if they let that cause them to not come back!

Ambience is great for a little dock side restaurant. Staff friendly and the food is excellent. The freshly caught herring dinner from the lake is so good. The Swedish cream dessert was a perfect ending. What a gem of a restaurant!!
