Anthony's Italian Coffee House and Chocolate Shop - Review - Italian Market - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Anthony’s is as old-school Italian American as it gets. The sunshine-yellow coffee shop has been around since 1938 and it's a great place to stop for caffeine and sweets in the Italian Market. Frank Sinatra plays, vintage family photos adorn the walls, and regulars hover over their sfogliatelle and cannoli while reading the newspaper. Prepare to be delightfully overwhelmed by shelves of never-ending candies—we’re talking caramel, toffee, truffles, and bejeweled chocolate-covered pretzels begging to be boxed up. And if it’s hot outside and you can’t stand the wait at John’s, try some ultra-creamy gelati. Or maybe just an iced coffee drink or a smoothie." - Alison B. Kessler

The products are really nice and reasonably priced. The ice cream isn't exactly like authentic Italian gelato, but it's a great value for the price — same goes for the coffee. It's also a nice touch that they offer free water. However, the staff could use some improvement. One of the women serving ice cream wasn’t very friendly. The staff member with glasses was better, but overall, a more welcoming attitude is important in the service industry. A bit of training could make the experience much better.

Google
Great spot! Looking forward to going back for a proper espresso. Had the affogato, cannoli and sea salt caramel. Yummmmmmy. So many sweets but still a balanced part of my daily calories. All of the treats were better than expected. Great location inn the heart of the Italian markets. Very friendly to boot.

Google
Wow. I ate breakfast here two days in a row during my visit to Philly. The breakfast sandwiches are great (love the Tuscan egg white on brioche - the Gavone is also good but can be a little heavy). The sfogiatella isn’t as crispy and flaky as the one I had in Naples but it does the job. The pistachio cannoli though - heavenly. Staff is friendly. Highly recommend sitting outside while enjoying your morning coffee.

Google
Anthony’s Italian coffee & chocolate house is some of the best coffee and pastries in Philadelphia. It’s located in the heart of the Italian market on 9th Street. The cappuccino is always made to perfection, and their cannoli’s are fresh and flavorful. Plenty of seating in the dining area, or you can lounge out front. The prices are very reasonable as well.

Google
Super cute cafe in the Italian market! They had delicious espresso, and great biscotti. They had a good pasty and gelato section, with lots of coffee to take home and buy. I also got a sfogliatella which was delicious. They have a cute little sitting area with tables and chairs, with a nice view of the street.

Google
Vanilla Latte was perfect. Cannoli was amazing! Candy looks great. This place is legit.

I have a strong suspicion that Anthony's business has changed hands. Every winter, my wife and I would patronize Anthony's for their delicious breakfast and chocolate. However, today's experience was vastly different from what we've grown accustomed to, leaving us thoroughly dissatisfied and disappointed. The customer service has deteriorated significantly. Previously, we were attended to by professional adults who provided excellent service. Now, the establishment seems to be staffed by inexperienced young individuals with an unpleasant attitude. The food quality has also taken a turn for the worse. For instance, the eggs taste overly processed, and their shape suggests they're cooked in a mold rather than on the grill. The sandwiches no longer come with sufficient bacon, and the chocolate-filled bread lacks adequate chocolate filling. Furthermore, they've replaced Heinz ketchup with the cheaper French's alternative. Honestly, we no longer believe it's worth returning to this establishment, which is unfortunate, given it was our favorite. I also suspect that the business may have been acquired by new ownership, unfortunately, this often results in a decline in product quality. It raises questions as to why changes were necessary in the first place, considering the product was excellent and the food was rich. Was it not sufficient replacing the previous staff with younger individuals and pay them lower wages?

Google
Italy vibes. Pistachio croissant and the paninis were delicious. Cappuccino and matcha latte were great!

Yelp
Super cool place with great menu. I got a cappuccino, pistachio cannoli, and bacon egg and cheese panini. All were fantastic! Place has a really cool feel and atmosphere. The servers were also very kind.

Yelp
AMAZING!! I always order from DoorDash when I am in Philly, but today, I decided to go to Anthony's in person. I LOVE the lentil soup and BEC croissant. It was fun to see all the truffles and other chocolates in person. The restaurant also has a small, quaint seating area that is perfect for sipping coffee or reading a book.
google avatar

Kristine S.

Yelp
Still want to make it here for a seat down meal but always seem to get sidelined with all the Italian fare that is available on the south side of Philly. Did run in to try some additional chocolates and the truffles did not disappoint. This was an 8 piece box of truffles and as you can see my son snagged one before I could capture a photo. A must visit quaint shop and restaurant located in the heart of 9th street.
google avatar

Komal R.

Yelp
Had the Pistachio gelato and cannoli. Both were quite mid. The cannoli filling did not taste fresh and the shell wasn't crispy at all. The gelato didn't taste like Pistachio and was not as dense as it is supposed to be.

Yelp
We probably visited this particular location more than any other! Coffee in the morning, whole bean coffee to take home and gelato in the evening. Service was pleasant at any time of the day; everyone was super nice. Coffee was good, served in instagrammable cups. I've had better gelato overseas, but it was a very nice treat either way. Lots of seating inside and out; the weather was fantastic, so each time we visited we were able to walk around or find a place in the outdoor accommodations.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to take friends visiting Philly, strolling down the Italian market. While it can be super busy, especially on weekends, there is always a separate, shorter line to order gelato. I love their paninis, affogato, and of course the pistachio gelato. It has a classic cafe vibe, but you can also decide to eat at the park across the street
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
This was a solid latte. I was craving caffeine while I walked around 9th street and Anthony's delivered. Ordering was efficient and my latte was ready quickly. The shop itself is very cute and while I didn't try them, the candy and chocolate covered pretzels were beautiful! I would try them next time for sure. A good place for a caffeine fix if you're in the area and in need.
google avatar

Eisha K.

Yelp
Local friend brought me here. I had the pistachio and caramel gelato. The pistachio was so so good! And only $6 for 2 scoops - sign me up!

Yelp
Anthony's is a reliable standby in the market. You can enjoy your coffee and pastry to go, indoors, or outside on their tables. They have lots of chocolates and coffees. I go there for chocolates when I need a gift for someone who loves chocolate and prefers classic flavors. I don't think you can find single-origin bars there, but that's not why I go to Anthony's. Think chocolate-covered pretzels or nuts or marshmallows. Or truffles, cherry cordials and nonpareils. They have pastries, too. I enjoy their sfogliatelle. But since I'm always on-the-go when I'm shopping on this block, I must admit I didn't even realize they serve breakfast and lunch! Dark, Italian roast coffee is the best way I can describe their drinks. They have a selection of beans for sale. On my last visit, there were carolers serenading customers outside. It was lovely. I stopped in for Fiasconaro, a unique, handcrafted panettone from Sicily. They carry it in several varieties, and it did not disappoint.

Yelp
Great coffee nice atmosphere. Filling space here Yelp requires 85 characters. Idiots.
google avatar

Samira A.

Yelp
I only tried this place once for the lemon gelato. It was a nice sweet treat and full of lemon flavors. I do wish it was colder because I felt like it was melting as soon as I received it. I'd come back tho, it was probably just an unlucky time. The flavors were too good only to try once.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
This place is cute and has nice staff members and good gelato. There's also lots of chocolate and coffee. Good place to buy gifts if you want to bring souvenirs home to family and friends.
google avatar

Hitesh N.

Yelp
I had heard a lot about Anthony's Caffe but never had a chance to visit. Good thing, it is right next to 9th Street grooming. So when I went to drop my pup for grooming, I had the opportunity to try Anthony's out. The place seems to be packed with tourists. We ordered Salt caramel Latte and a special Latte (I think it was called Godfather). The drinks were nice and delicious. Ordered sandwiches that were ok. Not bad. We were not impressed by their cannolis. There was a issue with our order. They missed giving us a packet so we had to drive all the way back to get it. Other than that it was good
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
I really like the layout of this place. Staff was super helpful. The sitting area is spacious. The coffee was definitely on the really good side, and the Nutella bombolini is to die for. My son also raved about the chocolate covered Oreo as anyone in their right mind would. I'm coming back, hopefully really soon.

Nina W.

Yelp
Ambiance was nostalgic with black and white photos posted and definitely great place if you have a sweet tooth. Many options. The chocolate gelato was particularly good. Sandwiches are stuffed with your favorite protein and they do skimp on the meat. Would say the order area is a little cramped, but there is a sit down area that you can get your food, drinks, dessert
google avatar

Yelp
Love their gelato and sorbets. Always about a dozen flavors. Very good case chocolates, I always buy a bag of their dark nonpareils to savor at home or as gift to someone worthy. Not thrilled with their panini since they don't heat them enough to melt the cheese. Great coffee, nice iced tea. Indoor and outdoor seating. Lovely spot at North end of 9th Street Market to relax and savor a light lunch or snack alone or with friend. I stop here often and bring a thermal pack to take home a pint of their delicious lemoncello sorbet or caramel gelato.
google avatar

Manu Oanh H.

Yelp
Realllly good gelato! Would come again! Doesn't melt quickly on a hot day. Good serving sizes. Service is nice and quick.
google avatar

Yelp
Anthony's Italian Coffee and Chocolate House is essentially a chocolatier/bakery/panetteria with their variety of chocolates, candies, pastries, gelato, coffee beans and sandwiches jam packed into the tiny establishment. Great atmosphere & location - in the heart of 9th Street Italian Market Indoor and outdoor seating areas with a relaxing vibe - able to watch all the activity in the market. Employees are friendly and helpful (shout out to Barbara, Vancy, Marissa and Stephanie) with quick and efficient service. Definitely make you feel at home. Recommend the espresso, cappuccino caffe with a panini - all varieties are delicious! Finish with a nutello filled Bomboloni!

Yelp
Came here on a beautiful Sunday morning to grab a drink while walking on 9th St. The shop is deceptively large with tons of seating both inside and outside. There is a small gelato stand and tons of coffee and chocolates lining the walls where the barista stand is. I ordered an iced mocha to go and unfortunately, it just wasn't very good. The chocolate was a thick syrup that wouldn't budge from the bottom of the cup. I had already left the shop so I couldn't go back and ask for a spoon or something. Also, the barista got the pastry order wrong which isn't the worst thing ever but you want exactly what you ordered! Alas, it was a nice pitstop but probably won't go back.
google avatar

El K.

Yelp
One of South Philly gems right here! Came on a Friday morning and just a great place to start your day. I love their thick cuts bacon and overrall their breakkie sammich just fresh. Def recommend this place to try.
google avatar

D S.

Yelp
Great spot in the Italian market! It was perfect for us on a late Sunday morning. Great coffee and paninis is what we enjoyed. However you can find baked goods, gelato and other sweet treats. Coffee by the pound or five pounds to go if you want it. I'd go back for the food, coffee, and quaint atmosphere.
google avatar

Eliza R.

Yelp
Great coffee! I got an amaretto latte and it was so, so good. The amount of milk and flavor added was perfect. I also got a Zeppole which was a little dry and not super flavorful. There are seats outside which was nice to drink my coffee and just enjoy being out in the Italian market. Would definitely come back for the coffee and maybe try some other baked goods since they have such a large assortment.
google avatar

Tricia G.

Yelp
O M G Drool-worthy ... everything! The gelato looked incredible, as did every other gorgeous baked item in the darling shop! We went with chocolate covered pretzels and Italian rainbow cakes. Both were succulently delicious! I think I was high on chocolate!
google avatar

Dominique H.

Yelp
The stars are between 3 and 4. First off, the place is a chocolate/cookie/pretzel/biscotti magical room at the end of a block. The shop itself is floor to ceiling Hansel and Gretel wicked witch's sweetie house! There's so much potential to the sitting part of the cafe - although perfectly fine, it could really stand out and become a true destination spot for out-of-towners, if only it was truly rustic Italian, warm and inviting with mood lighting, appropriate artwork and music, and warmer hues on the walls. As of now it's "fine". My party and I had a few chocolate truffles - absolutely delicious! Also an espresso and an almond latte. The espresso was good. My almond latte was 1 star - just terrible. Even after I added some sugar it was just... bad, sweet coffee. Great place to buy gifts all year long, for any occasion. We picked up some almond biscotti for some friends (hopefully it's a hit). I'd love to go back to see that they gave the cafe (sitting) part some extra love and thought - they can call me for a consultation any time.
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
Cute place to take yourself out on a solo date. Staff are super nice and the panini tasted very light and hearty. They use coffee icecubes so your coffee wouldn't get watered down.

Mike J.

Yelp
Great coffee, good candy selection, pastries are all good. Friendly staff, a sit down area that's pretty nice
google avatar

Danica S.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop right in the Italian market! It used to be much smaller, but they have expanded and have tons of outdoor and indoor seating. I enjoyed a delicious breakfast sandwich and HUGE cannoli. Wi-Fi is available as well, which is great if you want to take your laptop and get some work done
google avatar

Rita H.

Yelp
Best cappuccino I've had outside of Italy. Tasty Italian (and other) pastries. Great for a stop in South Philly while perusing the stores, delis and of course Magic Gardens. I made sure to pick up their coffee to grind at home, although they did offer to grind it for me. One détraction is seating is a bit cramped, you'll find people waiting for your seat when you get up, but everyone was friendly & polite about it.
google avatar

Andres A.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with a cafe latte and some Italian pastries. We got there early and wanted a quick cup of coffee. Service was quick and efficient. We chose to eat in their indoor dining area but if you choose you can have your coffee at their outdoor tables.
google avatar

Gloria E.

Yelp
The chai latte I ordered tasted like normal almond milk with not much flavor, spice, or sweetness. The espresso was fine. They also have large breakfast sandwiches on croissants with egg, meat and cheese. Super busy on the weekend.
google avatar

Iris H.

Yelp
This was my second time here while visiting Philly and I love it. They have tables outside with plenty of chairs and when I visited most recently they had seating inside. Masks are required to enter but you do not have to show your vaccination card. The setup reminds me of a traditional Italian coffee house which is what it's modeled after. I always see a line to order so make sure you plan ahead for a wait. The shop had a ton of coffee, pastry and goodie options. I've tried their seasonal latte specials and cold press. Both have been delicious and come with plenty of milk alternatives. The first time I went I got the spinach egg and cheese croissant. This time I ordered lunch and got the tuna panini along with the plain and Nutella bomboloni. The bombolonis were so yummy. The plain was lightly glazed and airy while the Nutella was definitely the real kind imported from Italy. The wait for the panini was about 20 minutes but it was worth it. It's an Italian style tuna panini which meant no mayo or celery. Instead it has tomato and olive oil, pepper and other delicious veggies. The food and coffee here are always delicious so I recommend coming here at least once when you visit Philly. They have a lot of delicious imports from Italy and it's a great cafe to people watch.
google avatar

Yelp
Hooked on their Italian Market Reserve coffee ground while you wait and the chocolate dipped biscotti is to die for!
google avatar

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Ice tea was all right, but the service could've been a little bit better. It's just nice if people would serve you with some joy and have a kind expression on their face.I love the view facing 9th.
google avatar

Andrea Z.

Yelp
The shop is cute because it offers lots of chocolate options although they could offer more when their name is coffeehouse and chocolate house. They also have a lot of coffee and tea options. I'm not a huge coffee drinker. I just recently started drinking coffee so I asked the employee to give me a recommendation based on what I do know, and what I do like, and she got very agitated and annoyed and said well, all we have is coffee and tea. She's very unhelpful, and seemed to not want to give good service. Then, when we tried to go sit down, she said we couldn't because we had a bag From another vendor. Even though she didn't even know what it was, she seemed it was food. I asked if I could leave it in the corner and still sit and she still settle. Overall, we had a terrible experience here and I wish I had been better because the place looks very cute and quaint. But I will never be back here and I won't make sure other people don't go or at least are aware of the terrible service.
google avatar

Anabell C.

Yelp
Such a cute little shop filled with goodies! I just tried 1 cannoli and it was so good. Not too sweet, but very flavorful.
google avatar

Emily I.

Yelp
Decent place to get a coffee. My cold brew was a little watery, which was disappointing. However, my friends got the regular iced coffee and it had coffee ice cubes in it! Nutella donut was great.
google avatar

Peacock L.

Yelp
Love the coffee here. When we have to go to Philly, we always stop here to stock up. However, we do not recommend the cannoli, a bit bland tasting.
google avatar

Katrina V.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place, but the pistachio cannolo I got was such a huge miss for me. The filling wasn't sweet at all. In fact it tasted very tart and lemony to me. I wondered if the cheese started becoming sour or if they really added some type of acidity into the ricotta. My boyfriend, whose Calabrian mother makes top notch, authentic cannoli, also agreed that the cannolo was very odd tasting and unenjoyable. On the flipside, the latte I ordered was delightful. I got a summer latte called the S. Philly Huckster, which was made with vanilla and amaretto syrups. I appreciated the online point of sale system that made pick-up super easy and effortless.
google avatar

Andrea F.

Yelp
Adorable, quaint, an Italian Market gem. Came here New Year's Day for a mid-afternoon cappuccino and smoothie to-go. Having never visited here before, I was impressed by the amount of drink offerings on the regular menu, plus the addition of holiday beverage specials, like peppermint lattes. Also did not realize that they're essentially a chocolatier/bakery/panateria and was overwhelmed by the variety of chocolates, candies, pastries, coffee beans and sandwiches jam packed into the tiny establishment. Obviously couldn't leave without picking up those dope non-pareil chocolate covered pretzels, but kicking myself for not seeing the pecan turtles in time. The outdoor seating area with the awning is a nice touch, but limited and always seems to be filled up no matter the hour, but good to note for future reference when I want a rainy day coffee and sfogliatella. Prices are very reasonable for the area (and the cappuccino was divine!) Will definitely return.
google avatar

Abby S.

Yelp
Really awesome place. We went in for coffee and ended up getting their breakfast panini and of course a cannoli. The coffee was a "spring fling latte" with raspberry and white chocolate and was fantastic. The cannoli was amazing as well. It was very authentic and definitely a must-buy. The panini was as well. I'd never had a panini on a croissant before and it was excellent. Would be a great place to grab breakfast or even just coffee.
google avatar

Charles S.

Yelp
When you go to the 9th Street Italian Market, you're going to need to take a break -- the Market is giant. And that's what Anthony's was created for. Get a coffee and sit down. Enjoy the vibe. Commune with the your fellow shoppers. The espresso based drinks are great. And don't miss the the little pastries. Anis-flavored waffle-baked wonders with a few lines of chocolate. The perfect accompaniment to a double espresso. And be sure to close the door on your way in and out.
google avatar

Alexandra C.

Yelp
I ordered on for pick up on Uber eats however you can just walk in and order what you like. When entering the shop there was a ton more items I wanted but didn't get there are a tons of treats beautifully presented. The cannolis I had were amazing along with the vanilla latte. My boyfriend had a cappuccino and he also enjoyed it very much. I definitely will be getting my coffee there again when I go and visit Philadelphia.
google avatar

Jeannie S.

Yelp
Favorite coffee house in the area that has good food and chocolates! Great service and coffee. Paninis here are so delicious as well. They have an indoor seating area as well as outdoors with heaters at the top of the roof. Don't forget to try their gelato treats as well!
google avatar

Olga K.

Yelp
I love coffee from Anthony's Italian Coffee House. Trust me when I tell you that once you start drinking coffee from here you won't be able to drink it from anywhere else. I personally like Palermo Espresso coffee. This one is its house coffee; and I started buying it for my home use after having tried it in store. I love making it every morning. Additional big big plus of purchasing from Anthony's is not only its coffee is of a high standard and taste, but they will grind it for you in literally 60 seconds. I like that they specifically ask what kind of coffee maker I use and they know how to grind it for each specific coffee maker type. I take mine medium because I use a stove top coffee maker. Try it! You will never go back to your old coffee again!

Maeve J.

Yelp
Great location, terrible service (maybe an off day?!), okay gelato. I placed an online order at 6:28 so I could run in and pick it up because I have my dog with me. 6:31 I go in the order says ready for pickup at 7am (no time listed before I submitted the order). Hours listed say they close 7pm. I asked the girl inside with the winged eyeliner she says "that's because we're closed, we close in ten minutes" ‍‍ she then reluctantly gives me my gelato no spoon, no napkins, and walks away. Gelato was so/so. I should have just canceled the order. Update your hours maybe??
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
This is one of the most quintessential italian joints on the italian/mexican market. The coffee is always refreshing and delicious, and the treats are to die for. Employees are friendly and helpful. I am lucky to have this place just a hop away from me! Will always love Anthony's :)
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
Anthony is the best and everything from the chocolate covered pretzels to the gelato is perfect
google avatar

Fushcia H.

Yelp
I ordered a grilled breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese and peppers, and a hot cup of their original dark roast coffee a little bit of soy milk. Ordering was easy and there was seating outside so my sister and I took a seat. They brought our food out in 10-15 min and it was amazing!!! The peppers were roasted/sauteed perfectly and added a really great flavor to the egg and cheese. The sandwich was filling though if you're really hungry, you might want to grab a pastry as a side. The coffee was solid and I would definitely go there again. Only downside is that there is a step to get up to the ordering spot, there is a another entrance which is ramped so if you're in a wheelchair or steps are hard that is available! Very cute, classic Italian deli spot with affordable options, I bet their lunch sammys are equally delicious!
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
Got a couple coffees and sat inside. It was very nice and the coffee was good too!
