Being a Parent in the Restaurant Industry Shouldn’t Be This Hard | Bon Appétit

"A high-end restaurant in the Fairmont Chicago where a chef served as chef de cuisine and endured punishing schedules—shifts that ran roughly 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and sometimes forced long stretches without the ability to pump breast milk, contributing to serious health consequences like mastitis." - ByLydia Kiesling

So I walk in and it’s extremely hot. It’s 80° outside and they do not have on the AC at all inside the store so I said there’s no AC she said no the AC is not working at the moment so I said OK if the AC is not working at the moment, I’m not going to stay here. She says hold on and then she turns on the air conditioner but it’s already so hot in the store that it’s like I don’t feel anything. I had to just ask for a box to take my food to go eventually because I couldn’t take it any longer. I guess they are trying to save on the electric because there weren’t any other customers at the moment

Google
The food is AMAZING - one of the best Asian fusion I've had! Be patient if you go here - staff is totally overwhelmed with all the customers getting takeout, delivery service and regular diners. The dumpling soup is unbelievable. Lobster tempura roll was "fire" according to my son.

Enjoyed the Sushi Bento box lunch. Service was excellent.

Fresh sushi and delicious Poke Bowl. Also tried the Beef Kung Pao with Cashews. Fast & Efficient service. Will definitely come back, specially for the Lunch Specials (they have a long list of options)

Google
So-so at best. My favorites are the soups. Sushi is average, everything else is satisfactory. The tables always seem to have a film on them and tend to be sticky. The bathroom had a foul chemical odor. The place is never busy when I'm there, maybe 2-3 tables are occupied out of 15 tables. Portions are great but a bit pricy. It seems like they may do a bigger takeout than dine-in. In a nut shell if your are craving sushi and this is the closest place then go for it. Otherwise, weigh all your options.

Google
Best takeout sushi in Southeast Westchester! The menu is inventive and the food is always fresh and delicious

Yelp
*Look on clipp.com for coupons!* My favorite Chinese restaurant of all time is basically right next door so I never was compelled to try Aria considering I don't eat sushi, but I got a coupon in the mail and decided to try it with my mom. First off just to note, it is absolutely FREEZING in there. Probably good for the sushi station that is right out where the tables are but definitely plan on bringing a sweatshirt. I ordered the dumpling soup which was really good, nice and hot in a cold restaurant on a rainy day. My only complaint about it was that they didn't pull apart the cilantro leaves and I got a big mouthful with a sprig of it and it was unpleasant, even as someone who likes cilantro. A little goes a long way! I liked the beef negimaki, naturally its a bit hard to eat and chew but that's how it always is. The flavor was good, nothing above and beyond. Surprisingly, I was much more partial to my mom's chicken tempura than what I ordered and I would definitely order that instead next time, I really liked the flavor of the breading. I was too full and cold to get a dessert but they had tartufo and fried ice cream which I'd definitely come back to try! It isn't the best Asian restaurant in the area in my opinion but not bad!

Yelp
I love this place for sushi and for Thai dishes. They are not super warm and fuzzy to talk to, but they are all business and you get great food in decent portions.

Sydney D.

Yelp
I ordered a hot app & a sushi app online along with some individual pieces of sushi for dinner. I arrived a few mins early. No patrons in the restaurant, just 1 UberEats driver waiting for 2 orders. The hostess brought his orders out, he left, and she proceeded out the side door on her cell phone, Never asking me who I was. So just myself & the sushi chef in the room, as he kept looking up occasionally and at least acknowledging my existence. 10 mins later, the woman came back, brought me my order and took my money. Bad experience "customer service" wise but the food was actually really really good!! The only thing I'd have to "pick on" here is, they do not give a good amount of white rice under the fish for the sushi options. As soon as I tried to pick up each piece, the rice fell off my chopsticks and I was only left with the fish. If that's what I wanted, I would have just ordered sashimi. Hopefully better next time!! (Fingers crossed!!) Beef Negimaki appetizer was killer good!!!!!

Yelp
We came down from Brewster to meet some friends from the area. Server was very friendly and food portions were humungous, however, food quality was sub-par. The steak and chicken tasted like cheap meat scraps, and they drowned it all in high-sodium teriyaki. Rice was ok, noodles were oily. We did enjoy the drinks. My Cosmopolitan was well-made, but could not dull my senses enough to compensate for the meal. I wanted to like this place, because it seemed to have the atmosphere and staff for the basis of a good restaurant, but since we were the only ones in the place during dinner hour, there was no wondering why we had this experience.

Yelp
Been coming here for years and often bring the family . We find the food delicious and always fresh so I don't understand some of those nasty reviews. Especially the ones that say it isn't " authentic "..No s**t. It's fusion ! And I may not BE Japanese like one of the reviewers but I have traveled extensively in Japan and I would say good luck finding many truly " authentic " Japanese restaurants, especially if they call themselves fusion.

Julie C.

Yelp
Food was good and interesting. There weren't many people the night we went so we had decent service and the ambience is nice..

Nagisa T.

Yelp
I would not recommend anyone coming to this place, even if you were starving to death. The food was below mediocre and I've had food poisoning afterwards. The food is not fresh and it's overpriced for the amount that you paid for for a very mediocre dinner. I'm just letting everyone know that this is not Japanese food but in fact, CHINESE FOOD. I am Japanese and I can tell you right now that none of the food that you're eating is authentic besides the sushi and I would not even recommend the sushi because it is so bad. Clearly quality is that if I'm eating sushi and one hour later, I'm having extreme sickness that means that the stuff is probably not stored correctly. Save your money and go somewhere else you have better chance eating McDonald's Update: it's been 24 hours and I'm severely sick, can't hold anything down and possibly have to go to the ER. Please do not come here to eat the sushi it is not good.

Yelp
Before this week, all we had ever gotten from Aria was takeout at lunch and had only mediocre experiences. But this week our manager wanted to celebrate completing our goals and took the department out to lunch. It's great that Aria has such a varied menu that was able to satisfy everybody's tastes. It is a little pricey for lunch, but hey, if you're getting treated, why not enjoy? From sushi to pad thai to sesame chicken to bento boxes to nabeyaki udon, I think we all enjoyed our dishes. Even the foodie newbies in our group got to try things they never even thought about eating. One office mate had never had sushi before, but thought the little cone of wasabi was some kind of avocado. His expression was priceless. Another big eater in our office finished off 6 bowls of miso soup and 2 bowls of salad. He really loved the ginger dressing. Everybody commented on the nice presentation of each dish, while another co-worker ate the hibiscus flower decoration. All these shenanigans and we didn't even have any alcohol, though they do have a full bar, as well as a sushi bar.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch after an appt that ran late. It was mid afternoon and I was hungry, so decided to go with the first place I saw. Food was so-so, and it seemed like my bento box lunch special was literally thrown together. Service person was inattentive at best, clueless at worst. There are so many good Asian places in Westchester, no need to have a mediocre experience at this place.

Anthony M.

Yelp
I have been eating here for about 2 years now. I have never experienced anything bad like some other people write in their reviews. I have always had good fresh food served to me and service has always been excellent. My girlfriend and I enjoy eating here on our anniversary's I definitely recommend eating here!

Yelp
Disclaimer - We didn't stay to eat so I am only rating based on other experience. We walked in to see if dine-in was available. We sat down at the first booth when you walk in to the left. Immediately to my left, there was a crate or something at the window with TONS of spider webs. TONS. I was shocked. I looked around and some of the chairs had barely any of the material left on them. The menus were old and crinkly. With this we both decided to leave without ordering. I hate to leave a review without having tried their food but this place was NOT clean in the dining room. We did not want to take a chance with the food.

Yelp
Food was decent but service is terribly slow and they were not friendly at all. Would choose other restaurants in the area before here.

Yelp
Good food, tasty Asian dishes and sushi. Nice local spot. We had to pick it up, I don't think it delivers.
google avatar

Yelp
They offer hibachi on Uber eats and it's not hibachi. It is bland and tastes like Chinese food. This place sucks and they lie. UPDATE: Uber eats refunded my money after agreeing that I was not delivered Hibachi. I wouldn't go near any type of food here let alone sushi after this experience

Yelp
In the 7 years I've been in the area, this must be the third restaurant to occupy this location. I hope this one succeeds because it's a decent spot. The Harrison/Mamaroneck area doesn't lack for Asian/sushi restaurants but I like this one for its food & proximity. It is not a huge place inside - especially when compared to other such spots on Mamaroneck Ave. - but it's not cramped either. Since I had just eaten sushi recently, I opted for the chicken teriyaki bento box lunch special ("boring " I know). I liked that, in lieu of rice, they give you steamed veggies. The only criticism I had was that the teriyaki sauce was a little thin but that may be better called an observation as perhaps others would like a thinner sauce. The portion was ample and everything else in the box was tasty. Left feeling full but not too stuffed. Will be back gain soon and update this review after I try the sushi.

Yelp
The food was delectable! Fresh, clean, delicious and the service was top of the line. Best udon soup!

Yelp
Its a small place, but the food is very good. I got the bento box and it is well worth the price. So much food, was not able to finish it. The shrimp tempura was delicious.

Yelp
I came to Aria Fusion for a quick lunch and wasn't expecting much. But wow, i was blown away by the amazing authentic food and incredibly friendly staff. I got the lunch special of spicy crunchy tuna sushi and salmon sushi. I also got Thai spring rolls and had some of my dads pork gyoza. the food was so good i recommend all of the items i listed. the meal also came with a soup and Miso soup. the soup was flavorful and really good. And for such amazing food, the overall bill was only around $30 for two people's lunch. overall i give this restaurant a 5/5, i will be visiting again.

Yelp
Honestly was the first place I tried upon moving to Harrison but no matter how many times we give it a try we are ALWAYS disappointed . Not only is the service TERRIBLE for both eat in and take out, the cleanliness of place much less the staffs uniforms makes my stomach turn.

Yelp
My favorite closet spot to eat food is so great and delicious I could eat here everyday. The best Asian spot in Harrison

Yelp
WORST SERVICE EVER! DON'T ORDER FROM THEM; Order Buddha in Rye Brook or anywhere else before you consider them. Ordered sushi from them for my office and they showed up 1 hour AFTER the delivery time they quoted (Ordered at 11:20am; quoted eta 12:10pm; got the food at 1:15pm). When I called and spoke to the person manning the phones the first time she gave me a lot of attitude when I asked where the food was and if she could wave the delivery charge or give us a discount for the exceedingly late food to which she responded spitefully no and that they "had to find a delivery driver for the food". Then when the food got to my office the sashimi was luke warm and smelt OFF and was immediately tossed in the garbage upon its arrival. The bento boxes of chicken teriyaki were cold and had to be microwaved (probably because it was sitting for a good 30-40 minutes after the order had been cooked and packed) and the sushi inside was also OFF and was tossed out immediately. When I called the woman manning the phones again to voice my disapproval of the service and most especially the food we received she refused to give us a refund and told us to "never order from them again" if we were so dissatisfied with them. To which I responded "don't worry we won't because your service is beyond a doubt the worst I've ever had in my life". After telling her we would bring this issue up with the card company and dispute the charges she budged and said she would give us a refund on the sashimi only because we had taken a few bites out of our bento boxes. In addition, she told us she would send someone to get the food which we insisted on and even asked her to take the bento boxes if it meant we would get a refund on that too, but she yet again refused and promptly hung up on me mid sentence. THE FOOD AND SERVICE SUCKED. Don't punish yourself or anyone by ordering their food for yourself, your friends, your office or your family. Shout out to Joanna or whatever her name was that was manning the phone. You shouldn't work in the service industry.

Yelp
Located in a small strip mall, this place was surprisingly good. We went as a party of 6, including Grandpa who really enjoyed the sushi! Pad Thai was eh, but everything else (curry, sushi, udon noodle soup) was great. Service was attentive and friendly.
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
Their sushi gave me a bad stomach, we used Groupon here a couple of times and the server didn't want to serve us well cause he knew we use Groupon and then one time he mockingly said "you guys always have groupon" then bitch don't put the deal there if you don't want people to buy it! Like honestly I would not pay full price for this crap
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
Good Asian food for reasonable price. Have eaten here several times and enjoyed everything we've ordered. Excellent sushi, rice and noodle dishes and especially tempura. Quiet atmosphere with good service.

Yelp
Aria is a gem. I judge a restaurant on two things and Aria hits gets top marks on both: quality of the food and restaurant management. The freshness of the seafood stood out. I'm actually really confused by the 1-star review for the fish quality from last month. We had fresh scallops, oysters, and the sashimi deluxe special and all were so fresh I didn't feel the need to add soy sauce nor wasabi. Just simply fresh fish. With the oysters they had a hint of spiciness which added a nice twist to the usual oysters on a half shell. One other time that my mother came, she wanted to order tuna, but the chef refused to serve it because he felt the quality wasn't fresh enough. It's clear he takes a long-term view with the business in ensuring the quality is top notch. My mother comes here often, so that's how I came to Aria for dinner tonight. We also had the fried pork gyoza which I could tell were freshly made -- the dumplings had the right amount of crispiness and the meat tender. A great go-to for an appetizer. We also had the Painted Lady Roll, which was fantastic. The layers of lobster with mango and avocado complemented each other really well. At the end of the meal, Ming (the head chef) came over to our table to get our feedback. It's clear he cares a lot about what you think of the food and wants to make sure you have a great experience. Comes as no surprise that he worked at Four Seasons in Singapore. The modest appearance of the restaurant hides the fact that this is the best quality Asian fusion restaurant in the area. While Mamaroneck may boast a row of glitzy Asian fusion restaurants, Harrison has a serious contender in Aria.

Yelp
Terrible terrible service. We sat down and it too probably 20 minutes for us to even get someone to come over and bring water. Then once we got water we probably waited another 20-30 minutes for the waitress to come over and take our order. We watched 3 different tables that came in after us get their meals before we did. We finally said something and then were told that the chef made the wrong dish. Why wasn't this communicated to us earlier? I asked the waitress for spicy mayo and it was never brought to me so I had to get up from the table to go to the sushi chefs to ask them. A little odd. We probably waited about an hour for our food to come out. After about 2.5 hrs at the restaurant we both agreed we would not be coming back. Service was terrible. Food was okay.

Chris L.

Yelp
Aria is in a corner spot in the Harrison shopping center where unfortunately not a lot of restaurants do well. This spot is constantly changing but Aria has been there for a little while so hopefully they stick around. Nice Asian interior and pretty friendly staff which is always good. We ordered the soup dumplings, beef satay, Westchester roll, and ribs in sweet chili sauce. Have to say the soup dumplings were the best I ever had and seemed freshly made. Good size, nice broth inside, texture of the dumpling skin was spot on, and very tasty overall. Can't say was a big fan of the soy vinegar sauce but could see others really liking it. The ribs were very tender and a nice sauce, happy with them. The sushi roll was also very fresh and quite good. The beef satay was average. Overall quite good. When visiting parents who live in Harrison will go back and hopefully they are still around.

Yelp
We went for dinner for Fourth of July, and the restaurant was still busy. Highly recommend the sushi rolls especially the jalapeño yellowtail appetizer and the Fox roll with jalapeños. The pork buns were great as well.

Yelp
Meet some frIends for dinner and drinks. Food was good however the service was/is very slow.

Chia L.

Yelp
We came on a Tuesday night so it was not crowded. We ordered the seared tuna salad, a classic miso soup, nabeyaki udon, tempura udon, Malaysian fried hor fun, and a bento. The bento box came with soup and salad and two types of meat. We also ordered a yellowtail sashimi and a tuna sashimi. Everything is excellent.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to come to for extra-warm sashimi, long wait times and rude service! 5 stars if you hate yourself, 1 star if you've ever eaten anywhere halfway decent before.

Katy D.

Yelp
I have been coming here for almost two years now. I'm a regular Friday 6 pm client for dinner. It's my treat of the week. My standards are not low. Quite the opposite. I love their service and menu. It meets my end of the week crave.

Yelp
The staff were very nice and accomodating. They served the best sushi I have ever had. I will definitely come back !
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best asian fusion places I've been to! Everything is just delicious and cooked perfectly. I came for lunch and got orange chicken which was crispy (I hate when it's soggy) and remained crispy for my take-home dinner :) The hot and sour soup is so good - there's not much I can say except that everything is amazing and I highly recommend this place and can't wait to go back myself!

Yelp
Go to sushi place in the area. The food is fresh and high quality. The dinner special is a ton of food and definitely worth the price.

Veronica B.

Yelp
Terrible delivery time !!! Ordered 6:01 pm and it's 7:50 pm amd im still waiting. I called the restaurant three times... first they said 20 mins then way past 20 mins , they said it's on its way. Then I called amd they said 3 mins and that was 10 mins ago. They wouldn't even give me a discount or credit , BAD BUSINESS

Bexx M.

Yelp
Mediocre tasting sushi. Wasn't open when I went at 11:15 tho the sign said 11. Made my order online instead and received confirmation it would be ready in 10-15 minutes for pick up. I went there just at the ten minute mark and had to wait an additional 10-15. Was thinking about making this our happy hour spot but the two women working there looked very unhappy. It just wasn't a good vibe and sushi was just ok.
google avatar

Susan G.

Yelp
Food is fresh and delicious. Nice renovations to prior place with well arranged booths and tables. Drinks took some time but I observed the bartender using fresh ingredients which was worth the wait. Korean dumplings were flavorful with a delicious sauce. Various sushi rolls were equally fresh. I had the crazy Friday. The staff is so nice and accommodating. Waitress dropped my left over 2 go food. I told her not worries. The chef insisted he make me an entire whole new order! That was a really appropriate gesture in my book. Happy hour every day from 3-6.

C C.

Yelp
Went for quick dinner and was pleasantly surprised. Had the Ramen soup with chicken and it was very good. My friend had lo mein and sesame chicken which she liked. I don't eat sushi so did not try,

Harry G.

Yelp
Well, I ordered through Grubhub and the order took an hour and a half to arrive. However ,I do understand an a Saturday night during covid that there might be a delay in delivery. My main issue is that the food wasn't very good. I ordered the Sushi appetizer which arrived warm from the delivery lag, but even when I re- chilled it, the fish wasn't fresh and two of the pieces were inedible. Then we ordered a hibachi beef and chicken combo. The food was incredibly salty and the noodles and rice were inedibly salty. The salad was meager and thrown into a styrofoam cup with a glop of salty dressing. The miso soup was ok but also very salty. For the price we paid for the meal, the food was very disappointing

John W.

Yelp
Ordered via grubhub since it stated they were open for delivery. Got cancellation an hour later. Guess they dont want my money. Was really looking forward to the food to.

Yelp
Superb food, highest quality in both freshness and authenticity. So often Asian cuisine attempts to be falsely persuasive in an effort to appeal to common inexperienced local taste. It's so refreshing to find a restaurant that makes a dish on its menu the way the dish was intended to be made at its point of origin. Hong Kong Pan Fried Noodles is nearly exactly what you'd find in numerous Hong Kong Noodle Houses. Dishes on the menu that say hot & spicy means hot & spicy, as it should and was intended to be, yet rich in the flavors of its motherland. I'm confident any review offering less than 4 stars are from those whom seldom have had a really professionally prepared Asian meal. The rice used at Aria Fusion for sushi exclusively are Tamaki Gold and Tamanishiki, as well as Tamaki Haiga" which are all considered premium or super premium short gran Japanese rices. So for those who would give a one star rating I have to wonder what back ground you have with sushi. Overall the food is excellent, providing delicious fare at very reasonable prices. Cocktails are well made and they too are very reasonably priced. The waiting staff are friendly and attentive even though they may not be the most experienced in the trade. The management team seem sincere and humble with their primary concern being your enjoyment & satisfaction. It's such a delight and pleasure to come across a small little restaurant that isn't in a rush to turnover table but instead are open to welcome you to their pride of performance in the talent that makes up their team of chefs. Terrific food, spotlessly clean with a pleasant environment & pretty decor and very inexpensive compared to so many other establishment.
google avatar

Yelp
Trash establishment, customer service is garbage and the food is not as good as advertised. Very big let down after an hour wait.

Yelp
No kidding the most delicious and creative special rolls I've ever had ANYWHERE. I never write reviews but I just had a great meal and am sitting at the table enjoying great jazz music to boot. Try the tempura southwest roll and the Chilean sea bass roll. We also had hot and sour soup which was a beautiful deep brown, delicious, and a large portion. This is the third time here and it's terrific. I hope to see more people here as this place deserves it. AND it's pretty inexpensive. We got 2 special rolls, 3 pieces of tuna sushi, 3 regular rolls, 2 hot and sour soups, and a large saki. With tax it came to $66. 12/13/15. I'm adding to the post above. I just had a prix fixe meal for 24.95 that was fantastic and generous. The best hot and sour soup ever in a large bowl; a jalapeño stuffed tuna thing that was kind of like a popper, w melted cream cheese. And two special rolls, insanely good and unique. And YOU CANT BELIEVE THIS. THEY GAVE US A HOLIDAY GIFT - A FULL BOTTLE OF SUTTER HOME MERLOT WINE! INSANE! This place is the best, most creative, most generous with portions, and most delicious sushi / fusion restaurant I've ever patronized. Kills everything around here. And not around here. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Lea M.

Yelp
This place is my favorite to go to for sushi!! Granted I only began going here after COVID so I have only ever gotten take out, however the quality is so good and the price is extremely reasonable. They also always have the food ready in time! I have no complaints yet. When I go into the place to pick up my food I find the staff is wearing masks which I really appreciate. I don't write many reviews on here but I've easily ordered from Aria at least 10 times now so I have grown very attached. Try this out!!! I usually get the 3 roll combo for lunch specials, or one of the Maki combos for dinner.

Pedro D.

Yelp
This place is Trash. There are much better Japanese restaurants in Mamaroneck, don't waste your time 3 mins down the street there are better places.
google avatar

Gregory J.

Yelp
It is indeed a fusion of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese style dishes. Excellent, attentive service coupled with a very sleek modern/traditional decor. I personally didn't look at a menu. Rather my aunt called two days ahead to make reservations and we allowed the chef to put together our course.

Sally C.

Yelp
Just know that if you order the pork Thai fried rice, it comes with bacon. Little strips of bacon. Never had that happen before. Food's not very good. I literally couldn't tell which sauce went with what. Go elsewhere.

Louise C.

Yelp
Don't order delivery from here unless you like to wait 1 hour and 20 minutes for your food. Disgrace!
