The Best New Restaurants Around D.C., March 2025

"Ground-floor Arrel is freshly-opened Arlo Washington DC hotel’s warm-toned restaurant with a bright grab-and-go cafe that highlights chef Pepe Moncayo’s Spanish roots, from growing up in Barcelona with Andalusian parents to being mentored by chefs across the Iberian Peninsula. Both the full-service dining destination and its snack-filled bodega will serve modern takes on classic Spanish dishes, such as comforting paellas, butifarra (simple Catalan sausage), and seafood dishes. An upstairs bar serving Japanese bites and drinks debuted in December." - Tierney Plumb, Emily Venezky

The Most Anticipated Fall Restaurant Openings to Track Around D.C. - Eater DC

"Arrels, which means “roots” in Catalan, pays homage to chef Pepe Moncayo’s Spanish heritage in the new Arlo Washington DC hotel. Look for modern takes on classic dishes from Barcelona, Andalucia, and beyond, with charred vegetables and tapas brought to life via a state-of-the-art Spanish oven and grill. Moncayo is best known for his work at Penn Quarter’s Japanese-Spanish mainstay Cranes." - Tierney Plumb

We came on Valentine's Day and was able to enjoy an amazing holiday special they put together that included live flamenco dancing and an unique 5 course meal. The performers did an incredible job, and worked the whole restaurant for hours. The food did not disappoint. Everything was delicious! My only critique was the onion ravioli dish. A substitute for that dish would have been perfect.

Excited to try this place out. The best deal is during unlimited brunch for two hours on the weekend. It was a vast selection of tapas. Everything we had was great with a couple of exceptions. But even the inferior dishes are high quality. Due to the interest of time and not being to try everything, I will categorize in two bins. The best ones I had were any egg dish, lamb skewers, spinach croquetas, and Santiago cake. Their version of French toast and crema Catalan need some work, but needs a little adjustment. Sorry to be nitpicky. Again these are all high quality dishes. Will certainly return.

I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at Arrels. We were supposed to come for a special event/wine tasting that was cancelled, but they offered us a really good bottle of wine to make up for it so we came to try the prix fixe (menu Sorpresa, $78 for six courses). From the moment we stepped in we were treated really well. The only dish I did not enjoy was the onion ravioli, which was unevenly seasoned and just kind of meh. We were really stuffed by the end of the night because they quietly threw in a complimentary branzino for us, which was delicious and went very well with the Albariño wine. I hope to be back!

The food was good and there’s a nice balance of flavors. They excel at presentation but the portions are too small. The staff are awesome. The portions look big so you feel like you’ll be full, but that’s just the presentation so order one thing more than you think you want. The cabernet was good and I enjoyed the mushroom and short noodle paella. My friend enjoyed his octopus chili and the Brussels sprouts were ok. I wouldn’t order them again. Not much flavor and undercooked. He also liked the rioja. Overall it’s a nice date night but a bit pricey for what you get. A slightly larger portion and it would be worth the money.

I recently went here during restaurant week, and it was a fantastic experience. The prefix dinner menu was an outstanding gourmet five course meal! My favorite was the squid ink pasta. The staff were also excellent and the interior was beautiful. I will definitely be back and would love to try more of their a la carte options!

It was my turn to choose our date night and I’ve been itching to go to Arrels. I was STUNNED by the interior of the restaurant and the creative, elevated spin on classic Spanish dishes. For those that don’t know, my husband is Spanish, so we have extremely high standards when it comes to Spanish classics. Super impressed! 🌶️ We originally were going to have a sit down dinner but pulled an audible and swapped to happy hour. Aaaaaand tried just about every item on their happy hour menu. It was all scrumptious. 🦑 My personal favorites were the shishito peppers, pinchos, patatas bravas (but I was wanting that white sauce!), and the CORTEZAS- give me a giant bowl of these pork rinds and a good tv show wow wow wow. The croquetas de queso were a bit sweet for our liking but still scrumptious. Authentic Spanish food is NOT spicy so I did loveeee that Chef Moncayo took creative liberty and spiced up most of the dishes. Because I make everything I eat spicy lol. 🍚 We will absolutely be back bc I neeeeeed to try their paella and they’re fideua (I’ve never had fideua beside my MIL’s and it’s one of my all time fave dishes). 10/10, Arrels! HIGHLY recommend 👏🏼

The best Spanish tapas restaurant ever! Service is impeccable. Food is fresh and amazing! Beautiful restaurant located inside The Arlo Hotel DC, with Head Chef Pepe Moncayo, who also heads Michelin star-rated Cranes Keisiki. Can't wait to return!
