Where to Find Pan de Muerto for Dia de los Muertos | Eater Chicago

"Hailing from the bread-conscious state of Guanajuato and with a baker lineup representing a few Mexican states, Artemio’s owner Artemio Cancino caters to hyper-local requests from his bakeries’ Mexican clients. At the same time, he is constantly adapting to the ever-changing face of the two neighborhoods (Lakeview, Wicker Park) he serves. At Artemio’s, pan de muerto is available year-round, with the only difference being that the version with sprinkled sugar is only made for Día de Muertos season. Call ahead. Pan de muerto sells out early." - Brenda Storch

Chicago’s panaderias offers a diverse supply of Mexican pastries - Eater Chicago

"Artemio Cancino, owner of Artemio’s Bakery, opened this Lakeview bakery in 1988. His first establishment in Wicker Park opened eight years earlier. Originally created to cater to a primarily Mexican clientele, Artemio’s Bakery has adapted along with the neighborhood. The bakery offers a selection of traditional Mexican pastries like orejas, ojo de buey, and tres leches, as well as regional specialties like pan de pueblo and pan de muerto." - Brenda Storch

Sir ExcuseMe

Google
I’ve been a loyal customer to Artemios for over 16 years. The bread is DELICIOUS!!!the best in the city hands down. I visit this location at least four days a week for coffee and bread it never disappoints. The lady in the register is AMAZING. She’s strict yet determined. Lines get long in the morning so I recommend the earlier the better!

bethany gonzales

Google
I wish I lived closer bc I would def be a regular. the conchas & cookies at other bakeries are dry & hard but here, they were so soft & moist. 10/10 recommend!

Adriana Figueredo

Google
Today I was scammed by the lady in charge because she made buy something that I didn’t want it. Stating that once the product was out of the shelve I couldn’t put it back. I didn’t even touch the product!! This pissed me off since I have been a loyal customer over the past 4 years and am have ALWAYS seen people putting back their products. To be honest this is not the cleanest bakery because everyone puts their hands to get a product but food is good! Until today is unbelievable that I had to buy something against my will ! Not coming back anymore and definitely not recommending!!

Google
Amazing place to buy your Mexican bread ! It lasts long too! I have bought from other locations and the bread turns into concrete in 24 hrs. Ha ha not funny ! The flavor and choices are great. Will definitely be coming back . For atmosphere gave it only three stars because you don’t really interact with humans like you do at a restaurant. Just go in pick your bread pay and leave. I don’t have a problem with your staff smiling or not smiling as long as I get good bread I’m a happy person! Looks like you may have some Karen fans leaving poor reviews on dumb stuff…..

Google
Lovely bakery with delightful fresh bread, rolls and sweets.

Google
Amazing bakery! The baked goods were amazing, as was the coffee, and the prices were really good! I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Google
Always a fresh and DELICIOUS pastries and bread… 👍🏼👍🏼 This Mexican bakery had the best conchas y bolillos plus many different other varieties… Recommend 100% to take a dozen conchas or combined sweet pastries than a dozen donuts to your workplace or home… 😋😋😋

Mikey Borden

Google
Nice staff, delicous baked goods. They used to be a cross the street, but their current location is great too :) They do bulk orders and can even make you a specialized birthday cake.

Yelp
Love this place. Go in here with nothing in mind and grab everything that looks good. Your total will be less than $15. My favorite is the concha. Nice folks in there as well, favorite spot to go on the weekends. Fill up your own tray which is nice and quick.

Yelp
I came to this Panaderia to check out their pan Dulce. I will admit, the location is quite odd for a Mexican bakery, but hey if they can generate business out of this location, then great for them. The older lady working here was very welcoming. She doesn't treat you like if you were a customer. She treats you like if you were part of her family. The prices on the bread was more than fair. I took home a concha, Puerco, elote, novia, beso and a cookie with sprinkles for the kiddo. Everything tasted very fresh and delicious. My only complaint is some of the pan dulce had cinnamon pieces in it. Which I absolutely hate in Mexican bread. Especially in the elotes. I'm. It sure I would out of my way for this bakery, but if I'm ever in the area in the mornings, I wouldn't mind picking up a couple of conchas.

Bailey B.

Yelp
Best local bakery of the north side. Amazing prices, fast service, baked in house and fresh every day. If I could give it 6 stars I would!

Yelp
Love Artemio's. The best Mexican bakery I have been to so far. I thought they closed on Sheridan but happily discover the just moved across the street and the bakery is much nicer.

Ashley R.

Yelp
Food is delicious. Very reasonably priced. The apple turnover is perfect. Am definitely going to stop by regularly.

Yelp
I go here every morning and the service is pretty consistent,l a lady that works there Monday -Thursday is always friendly. The coffee and muffins are always fresh and delicious. The only negative comment would have to be about the service I receive on Fridays. The cashier at times does not say good morning. Her demeanor isn't consistent or welcoming. I've never spoken to her in Spanish but she insists on speaking to me in Spanish. I always say good morning and thank you. I don't think she is terrible by any means but could use some support with being consistent in her delivery and service. Other than that, it's a pretty consistent and good.

Yelp
Excellent Mexican bakery! Always fresh pastries and plenty to choose from. My favorites and the flan, blueberry muffins, and macaroons. Clean as it gets! The women who operate his business deserve 6 stars for customer service and baking skills. Super reasonable. It's nice to see a bakery like this survive in an ever changing neighborhood. The hood would far less without it. If you have not been you are missing out. Stop in and get your sweet tooth on!

Yelp
A Mexican bakery that serves pan dulce, or sweet pastries. It's affordable, and the pastries are great! I came here after a 24-hour shift at the hospital, and let me tell you, there's nothing better than freshly baked pastries in the morning when you're exhausted and hungry. There's a large assortment of baked goods, and it's self serve. You pick up a tray and a pair of tongs and choose whatever you want from the array of sweet breads. I didn't know the names of things (I'm only really familiar with conchas, the seashell-like buns with spiral craquelin topping), but I picked a rectangular puff pastry with pineapple filling and Boston cream donut-type pastry with a chocolate glaze. Altogether with my boyfriend, we got four pastries, which amounted to $7. I was pretty pleased with the pastries, especially for the price. These pan dulce are large, and while not super sophisticated in flavor or made with finesse, you can't beat the price and the freshness, and I would definitely come back.

Yelp
#thankyouthursday Artemio's Bakery is the most reliable place to visit for freshly made baked goods. Luckily they open pretty early so you can beat the crowds, because it does get really busy, when picking up freshly baked breads. I love that whenever I visit they have a new treat for me to try out. I cannot get enough of the giant cookies or the homemade cupcakes. Both are a must try, I would highly recommend the almond cookie. My husband and I typically get a few of the freshly baked croissants along with a sweet treat. I am so used to most things being so over priced in Lakeview that I am always astonished by how cheap our purchases turn out. We leave with a bag stuff with items and it always turns out less than $10 no matter what combination we grab. Plus the shop has been great with promoting social distancing and sanitizing the shop. It is the few places that I don't worry about when I come in to make my purchase. I would highly recommend visiting early in the morning on a week day because it gets busy on the weekend.

Yelp
Worst service. Will never return or recommend. The employee was extremely rude. Completely unacceptable conduct of an employee.
google avatar

Justine D.

Yelp
I recently moved from LA to Chicago and I've been craving Mexican bread. I found this place online and it did not disappoint! The bread is amazing and freshly made. True to the Mexican spirit of not over charging the people. As a Mexican American, with high standards when it comes to the taste of pan dulce, I recommend this place. Be weary tho...you might gain 10lbs.
google avatar

Elaine L.

Yelp
The evening weekend employee was extremely rude. As I walked around looking for what I wanted, she walked around sweeping and gave me a dirty look as if she was bothered that I was there. Upon paying, she yelled at me saying that there was a minimum of $3 for card purchases. There's a nicer way to communicate that. The whole time I was there I just felt uncomfortable. No warm welcome or even a "thank you" or "good night." Will NOT be coming back. You can find better tasting bread with friendlier staff that actually appreciate the business.
google avatar

Nandana N.

Yelp
I want to start off by saying how mad I am that my friend lives half-a-block away from this blessing of a bakery. The donuts are super fresh, delicious, not-too-sweet, super fluffy and filling. We had the regular one, chocolate glazed, chocolate glazed with sprinkles and all were amazing. I also got the vanilla corn bread and it was huge and wonderful and made me swear some at my friend's proximity to this place. We paid $3.40 for everything. Yeah, awesome stuff at such prices!! Plus the shop smells like heaven and the bakers are super friendly! PS: Devoured all donuts before pics. Sorry not sorry.

Yelp
For a long time I've been going to this bakery. I've always loved it and thought they were a great small business. Recently found out the owners are not the best people. Was told the lady that worked here that I've known for years got fired after getting in a car accident and having a bruised face. That leaves their bread tasting horrible in my opinion. Do better for your community. Chicago needs love not hate

Madison C.

Yelp
Arguably the best panadería on the north side! My family has been going here for decades. The prices are very affordable and everything is delicious.
google avatar

Dana S.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican bakery. Everything is made fresh daily. Happy to see this place remain in business because it's a neighborhood staple. Stop by and try a variety of treats.

Yelp
Mexican sweet bread Inexpensive I choose 6 pc and a can of soda Was $6 I remember they were across the street Nice ppl On this covid times pls wear mask is mandatory now
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
I have been to several Mexican bakeries around the city, they are fairly standard in what is offered with a few variations. I just finished lunch nearby and stumbled in here with my mandatory need to sample all possible sweets despite not really needing to do so. The layout is cute with cabinets that you can access from two sides, the flow around the store is nice as you pick out your own items for the cafeteria tray. Mexican pastries are always a little blander and less complex than the most high end desserts but they satisfy the sugar craving big time. Very cheap, only 4$ for what was probably 2000 calories worth of stuff (including a diet coke of course: spread over the week!). They do cakes for families and kids as well.

Yelp
Came here in search of a greatTres Leches cake. Saw so many great reviews of this place and wasn't disappointed with our cake. what a beautiful Tres Leches cake that tasted amazing. The Tres Leches cake is perfectly moist but not too much. Cake is sweet but not too sweet and really looks beautiful. I highly recommend this place for Mexican baked good.
google avatar

Yelp
What a great find! I was volunteering at a food pantry down the street and after sorting and looking at food for hours I was starving! I saw Artemio's as I was heading back and just had to stop and get something. Of course, I ended up with 4 things, not just 1 because it all looked so good and everything was so cheap. I only paid $5.25 for 4 separate pastries/desserts! The coconut chocolate macaroon and the raspberry filled tart were especially good
google avatar

Katherine G.

Yelp
Love Artemio's and a little shocked I haven't reviewed it yet. The pastries, the bread, the cookies and coffee! Not sure where to start. Everything is delicious and amazingly fresh. They'll replenish the assortment through out the day, especially for popular items. My daughters are particularly keen on the cookies, by my husband and I are always drawn to the coffee cake. I'll admit I was a little intimidated at first because I'm not familiar with pan dulce and the self serve tray/tongs format. But glad I gave it a chance and keep heading back.

Yelp
It's been a while since I visited my grandmother. She's living with my Auntie. Since I miss her so much I decided to go visit with her and stay there for one week. I also bought her a lot of presents. Before I go there I want to buy him some bread aside from flowers. She loves bread and when I was a kid we used to eat bread, sandwich and bagel every morning with some milk or coffee. I went to this shop. It was my second time coming here and I like their bread. There is a lot of bread to choose from. It was kinda hard to choose since all of it tasted really delicious. I bought again the bread that I bought here lastime because it taste so delicious. It was packed in the box. I'm sure my grandma will like this. Can't wait to see her reaction.
google avatar

Idalis S.

Yelp
Artemio's is my go-to bakery in the area and I make it a point to stop by almost every weekend. They have plenty of goodies to choose from and their empanadas are quite honestly the best I ever had. The store is clean and well organized. Highly recommend stoping by and trying out the sweets!
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
Fresh mexican bread for the Northside of town. I'm always amazed at how fresh the bread is when picking some up. Give donuts a break try this Mexican bakery. Coffee is also available. For those unfamiliar with the Mexican bakeries, you'll grab a tray and tongs to pick out your breads. There is a variety to choose from dont feel overwhelmed. Try different breads during different visits. I highly recommend the coffee to get your day started or even for an afternoon boost of energy. Cant go wrong with a "con-cha" and coffee. They serve the freshest breads, straight out of the ovens in the Northside of Chicago. I cant emphasize enough how fresh and delicious the bread is from this bakery.
google avatar

Tony B.

Yelp
Omg! I was trying to buy some bread for Italian sandwiches and everything was sold out. I've seen this bakery several but thought it would over priced. What?!?!? I tried to escape with 4 rolls, it was 1.40. That work have been 10.00 anywhere else and delicious! Go here!

Allison D.

Yelp
The tres leches cake is to die for! I ordered it for my wedding cake, as well as for my spouse's last three birthday parties. Artemio's never disappoints, and everything is very reasonably priced.
google avatar

Wendy Z.

Yelp
so so so so good and so so so happy that a small business like this is so close by! finally stopped by on one of my evening walks, and got there 5 minutes before close. don't know exactly which breads/pastry i got, but got a relatively plain wheat bread, a sweet bread that wasn't a concha but delicious all the same, and a pastry filled with pineapple and had caramelized edges. the breads were still fresh even at end of the day and when i brought them to toast at home, they were light and heavenly. but the stunner was the pastry filled with pineapple!!! the pineapple filling had LARGE distinguishable chunks of fruit and wasn't too sweet which was a delight to eat with the crispy pastry even after having sat in the fridge for 2 days. i was only going to eat one bite, but ended up shoving the whole thing down in 3 minutes cause it was soooooo tasty. and all of these breads!!! for just three bucks :)

Collin M.

Yelp
Best coffee cake I've ever had. Very affordable as a whole. If you are looking to get the coffee cake on Saturday I would get there before 9:30am otherwise it will probably be gone. That is because it is amazing so it is really popular. They have other great options as well.
google avatar

Lisa E.

Yelp
The best yet of Mexican fresh pastry breads!! I frequent this place and recommended many people who also love this bakery!!!

Christian M.

Yelp
The older woman at the counter is extremely rude. Treats you like a bother. I Heard her calling a non Spanish speaking customers out of their name in Spanish. Extremely rude. I love the pastries here but that women makes me think twice about going in with her rude attitude. Rather go somewhere else
google avatar

Jo S.

Yelp
Whenever I pass by this place I have to stop in for a treat. A variety of pastry options that will definitely fit whatever you need. Everyone that works there is super nice and I will definitely be back again!
google avatar

Diamond W.

Yelp
This was my first visit into this bakery and upon entry I was not welcomed. I came to buy some cupcakes and butter cookies and ask a few questions about some treats I had never tried before. I was in the store for over 5 minutes without being acknowledged, instead the lady behind the counter had a full conversation in Spanish with someone else, without letting me know that she will be with me as soon as she can. When I decided to leave, not once did she say " I'm so sorry, thank you for your patience". She never batted an eye and I will NEVER return nor recommend. I'd rather spend my money in an establishment who welcomes me.

Perry K.

Yelp
Good little spot with fresh pastries. Little confused at first but enjoyed the tong experience. first Yelp review for the culture.
google avatar

Alyson D.

Yelp
We love Artemio's! Affordable, yummy Mexican pastries, breads, cookies, and cakes. You can't go wrong popping in here for a treat. The store is newly renovated and always clean. Great variety and friendly staff!
google avatar

Vincent K.

Yelp
Great reliable place with a lot of variety. It doesn't look like it at first but they surprise you with taste and what's on inside. They have a lot of traditional stuff but also have stuff for holiday themed. Nothing with meat in it though but a few have cheese. They have cold desserts too and coffee. I think they do cakes too. A lot of traffic and open every day. Don't be offended if they aren't talkative or bubbly; they're working.
google avatar

Christopher A.

Yelp
Amazing bakery, so many options to choose from. Come here all the time. Has a $3 minimum, but you can get so much with that price. Always enjoy coming here.

Carson S.

Yelp
This is the cheapest and best quality mexican bakery I have ever been to. The price range is 0.60-2.50 for each pastry depending on what you get, and I always leave with more than I intended to buy while spending less than I was expecting to!
google avatar

Chloe K.

Yelp
A gem in our Lakeview community. We are lucky to have their new, renovated store stay open through the pandemic! The whole area changes every year but Artemio's has been here through it all. I hope to see it here for a long time.

Nik L.

Yelp
Great cookies! Even better Tres Leche cake!! This is my go to place to order cakes for parties!

Gabriela P.

Yelp
I normally only buy from a Mexican bakery when I'm in a Mexican neighborhood, Pilsen for example. Living here on the Northside near Wrigley Field, I was IN HEAVEN when I discovered Artemio's Bakery. They are delicious. Glad to have found this gem so close to home. My weekend ritual is to walk there with my coffee, pick up a pan dulce, and eat it on my Saturday stroll : )
google avatar

Ara A.

Yelp
I grew up buying all my bread at Mexican bakeries. I was so thrilled that there was one half a block away when I moved to Wrigleyville. The people here are so friendly and passionate about their job. I was so sad for 6 months when they closed down. Their new location right across the street is adorable and inviting. The only thing that stayed the same was their quality of baked goods. I stop by here once a week on my way to work to bring conchas to work. Highly recommend this plAce!!
google avatar

Sharita R.

Yelp
I quickly stopped in here because I had a craving for my churros, which is a usual problem on the weekends. I didn't find churros, but that's ok because there were so many other options to choose from. There was a very good selection, considering how small the bakery is. I was also impressed that they were still bringing out fresh trays of baked goods on an early Saturday evening, so you don't have to worry about eating stale stuff here. The price is more than reasonable-I was kind of shocked at how cheap everything was. Service was quick and friendly. We walked out with many more sweets than planned, but they were huge and delicious. I would totally stop in here again if I was nearby and craving something sweet.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
I've probably gained 5 pounds or more in the last year... all of the Mexican pastries... there's conchas, marranitos, and all that jazz. It's always the same nice Mexican lady. Whenever I come in on the phone speaking Spanish with my mom after work, the lady always sends a friendly hello to my mom. That's how often I come in. Is it the best Mexican pastry shop ever? No, but it gets the job done and right in front of Sheriden!

Natalia G.

Yelp
Ordered a tres leches cake for a birthday. It came out delicious! Very happy with my experience.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
Yes. Yes yes yes, this place is wonderful. Perfect local place that serves tasty pastries that are priced extremely reasonable. The only reason this didnt get five stars is that it doesnt have a sitting area, which I love. But I dont think thats the feel they are going for. Its a stop in, in the morning, get what you need and go kinda place.
google avatar

Baber A.

Yelp
We as a family like tres leches cake. It is a standard cake for us to get on birthdays. We have tried 5-6 different places around the city in our hunt for something that is just right! Artemio's in my mind is the best Tres Leches Cake in the city - hands down! It is soft, sumptuous with the right amount of sweet! We love it and we love this corner neighborhood bakery as a result!
google avatar

Samia G.

Yelp
This place is owned by a super cute family. They are very nice and sweet. It's on my way home so I usually stop there for some pastries. Their prices are good and all the sweets taste amazing. Definitely worth a try!
google avatar

Mirka G.

Yelp
I wanted to write this review to say that it is definitely a great bakery! The Tres leches is my family's favorite and we always order one no matter the occasion and it is a great price. However, the 3-star review is due to customer service. Every time we order/reserve a cake it always gets sold before the allotted time we have given. This has happened at least 3 or 4 times in the past. We say we will pick up the cake at 4 or 5pm and it gets sold. We attempted to pay before so this would not occur and they always say "you have to pay here". I try my best to support local business but it is EXTREMELY difficult when they do not deliver on their promise. SO if you're reserving/ordering a cake make sure you call before you leave your house/work to make sure they haven't sold something you are expecting.
google avatar

Liam B.

Yelp
What a neighborhood gem! Super fresh all the time and great prices. Best way to start a lazy weekend is a big blueberry muffin from here, or making an egg sandwich with fresh bread. If you want pastries, this is the place to go.
google avatar

Little D.

Yelp
I still stick by my old review as I truly do love this place -but- this morning I did experience what some of the other reviewers had mentioned about the prices not being consistent. I bought way more my first time and it was less. That said, all this for $28 is still awesome and the quality is great. I did have to knock it down a star though. They need to post their prices and be consistent.
