Artichoke - Review - East Village - New York - The Infatuation

"Come on people, this is completely out of control. It's Thursday night at 2:30am and there's a line forty deep for a slice of pizza? That's just stupid. At the painfully slow rate at which Artichoke moves, that's at least an hour wait. By the slice, pizza is supposed to be that cheap, quick fix - but Artichoke is neither. I totally hopped on board the 'Choke bandwagon when it opened, and was pushing it on people non-stop. After all, how could I resist hyping up a hot new slice right next to my apartment? Unfortunately, there was trouble in paradise, and I soured on this place pretty fast. My beef with Artichoke is three-fold. First, I absolutely can't stand Artichoke's deliberately slow operation. At first, fine, bask in the glory of your 24/7 line. Everyone wants a piece. I get it. But to continuously operate like this is infuriating. Hell, even when it's empty, it still takes fifteen minutes to get a slice! Is it too much to ask to just have hot pies ready to roll? Adding insult to injury, when you finally make it to the front, you're hardly taken care of. The dudes behind the counter are more concerned with singing along to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" than getting your order correct. Keep a keen eye on what's going on, follow your slice from the pie to the oven, and then into the box to ensure they get it right. Lastly, the prices keep going up. For the signature Artichoke slice $4 isn't out of line, but pricing the others at $3.50 is a lot to ask. $7-8 for two slices? That's not cheap. So, strike one for line enabling, strike two for poor customer service, and strike three for the non-recession friendly rates. When you take these things into account, Artichoke's rating takes a huge hit before we've even had a chance to eat anything. That being said, the pizza is great, and as much as I'd like to write off Artichoke and never return, that's not going to happen. I'm just not lining up for it ever again. Food Rundown Artichoke This is more like a four course meal (artichoke, an assortment of cheeses, cream sauce, thick Italian bread) than it is a slice of pizza. The slice itself legitimately weighs in at two and a half pounds, challenging even those with the most cast iron gut to fight off a stomach ache. Don't get me wrong, this infamous slice is worthy of the buzz, just not something that you can eat on a regular basis. It's great going in, not so much coming out. Crab This is easily my favorite item on the menu. If you see a fresh crab pie, go for it. I know what you're thinking...crab at a pizza place? Not only does it work, it's amazing. Small chunks of crab and mozzarella are evenly sprinkled across the pie, making for tasty bites all around. Its brown appearance doesn't make it look like the most appetizing slice but, trust me, it is. Sicilian initially this was my favorite Artichoke slice. The crust is absolutely phenomenal; thin, crispy, and perfectly burnt at the tips. It has a light slice compared to other Sicilian slices, and it's damn good. My big complaint is that for some reason, the first couple bites are always far superior to the last couple ones. Somewhere in the middle, this slice loses me. It's way too oily and the basil leaves are overpowering. All my bitching aside, I'd still recommend checking it out. Margarita Skip. Skip. Skip. They should have kept this one simple, but there are too many cheeses, and again, the basil is out of control." - Andrew Steinthal

I recently tried the Artichoke Slice at Artichoke Basille’s Pizza, and I have to say-it was easily one of the best slices I’ve had in New York City! This isn’t your typical slice; it’s massive, rich, and incredibly indulgent. The crust is thick and crisp, providing the perfect base for the generous layers of creamy white sauce and gooey melted cheese. What really stood out were the chunks of artichoke hearts-abundant, flavorful, and perfectly balanced against the richness of the sauce. Be warned: this slice is very heavy, so if you have a smaller appetite, it’s definitely something you could share with a friend. But if you're feeling hungry or just want to treat yourself, it's absolutely worth digging into solo. It’s not your average New York slice-it’s more like a full meal. The service was quick and efficient, which is always appreciated in a busy city spot. There were a few standing tables both inside and outside, which made it easy to grab a quick bite without a long wait. If you’re in NYC and craving something different from the usual cheese or pepperoni, the Artichoke Slice is a must-try. Creamy, cheesy, and full of flavor-this slice lives up to the hype!

The artichoke slice was a little too saucy but the marinara sauce was strong, tangy and fresh! I would go here again but only for a late night meal out of convenience.

Google
Chill place to grab a slice not too far from union square. 💯% one of better slices in NYC with only a few to rival it. Expect a bang for your buck. Slices are sweet, savory and smoky. The Artichoke slice is creamy and delicious. Enjoy🌹

Google
First time trying Artichoke’s and I got the artichoke pie. It had an interesting flavor profile — like a white pizza but way creamier and a synergy between the artichoke/spinach and the mozz/pecorino cheese blend. I wouldn’t even describe this as a NY slice (though the slices are big) as there are much more flavors present than just sauce and cheese. The crust was also crunchier than standard NYC pizza and bottom not as crispy due to the leakage from the creaminess. Worth trying, but hard to do an apples-to-apples comparison as it’s unique in its own right.

Visited on a Monday night. The person heating up my slice of pizza had attitude because I did not order at the same time as my friend (I was deciding what to get). After ordering a slice of the Sicilian, he heated it up for about 30 seconds. The people who ordered after me got their pizza a decent time later. My slice was mostly cold, cheese not melted and the edges burnt. Paying almost $6 for this subpar service and food is not worth it. The owner should look into the people who run this place Monday night. The attached pictures put the Artichoke name to shame - especially if you know their normal quality.

Google
What a pizza!! I have never had anything like this before. It's so good and creamy. Half of a slice was also so filling.

After a few bars, Artichoke Basille's was the perfect late-night fuel stop. Grabbed some takeout and while I appreciated it, my kids (still rocking West Coast time) went absolutely crazy for it. Clearly, their metabolisms are working better than mine at 2 AM. They definitely enjoyed it more! The pizza is delicious and filling, so it's sure to satisfy your hunger.

Google
Artichoke is an efficient, premium slice acquisition machine. Not much of an atmosphere to speak of, but you can get an oversized (~1.5x) pizza slice with premium ingredients fast, even right after the bars close. They're not cheap but the size of the slices hides some value. The outdoor standing tables are a good place to watch the city go by and finish your conversation.

Yelp
Ever since having a slice of artichoke pizza in Miami at their short lived location on South Beach, I've been hooked. It's my "death row" meal, I have dreams of this grotesquely delectable bechamel cheesy bread-y slice that knocks your BMI up a notch with every bite. It's always my first meal when I land in NYC. You will be disgusted with yourself after consuming a whole slice, but it's worth it. So worth it that I got two slices to go and trekked them from the West Village back to West Kendall (Miami) for my husband. Yes - you can take pizza through TSA, if you can stomach the judgemental looks from strangers. You're Welcome.

Yelp
The famous artichoke pizza! I came to New York excited to try 2 pizza places, artichoke basille and Joe's. To preface, I am not the biggest fan of thick crust pizza, and this place had VERY thick crust. I ordered the artichoke pizza and the margarita pizza but could not finish either because it was so heavy. The artichoke pizza had a lot of cream and because the crust was so doughy, the whole pizza became pretty mushy. The margarita one was better because it had some freshness from the tomatoes but still not my favorite. Overall, if you're a thin pizza crust fan, I would not recommend. Unless it is fresh out of the oven, the pizza is soggy and heavy. The service was great though and I was able to be served fast! Not much seating inside though so it really is a grab and go place.

Yelp
For some reason, this pizzeria blunted my expectations. Upon entering, it initially felt like the perfect pizzeria with a toasty oven and wholesome decor plus marble furnishings and big cast iron oven. Employees were friendly and allowed me to pay with a credit card despite being under the $15 minimum posted on the signs. The pizza itself, however, was just average at best and did not have the kind of cheesy taste that I'd come to expect based off the display. Crust was crispy and golden brown plus the price was great ($5 per slice), but the taste itself wasn't particularly my favorite.

Yelp
For a ny pizza, not bad bit lacked flavor. Like my family described it, just bread with tomato and cheese on top. We tried their margharita pizza, sicilian, and classic pepperoni, and some garlic bread. Generous slice of pizza except for the sicilian being half the size of a regular pizza (tinier than prince st.) and the garlic bread came in an abundant amount! with marinara sauce! but thw flavor was clearly lacking.

Yelp
I was on my way to get lunch with a friend when I saw Artichoke Pizza on my way to the restaurant. I had heard about them before, but never got to try their pizza, so I dropped by. I'm really glad I did. The staff was very friendly and service was quick. I ordered one slice of artichoke pizza and it was huge! At an affordable price of $7.57 with tax). I only noticed the sign on the wall saying they only take card for orders over $15, but the owner allowed me to pay with card. This slice was so unique. Super creamy and savory. Pizza was thick, but crust had a crispy exterior and soft interior. It can easily feed 2 people. I would not order this often because it can be heavy, but I can see myself craving this once in a while.

Yelp
Definitely not a classic NYC slice by any means, but my god are the artichoke slices good. Highly recommend for anyone visiting NYC! Service is generally quick and easy except for late night as it gets super busy. Pretty small, not much seating so best to take it to go.
google avatar

Yelp
This may be my new favorite pizza spot in NYC! Artichoke Pizza lives up to the hype! Very large, generous portion size for a slice. It's so simple but you just get their Artichoke Pizza! The spinach cream sauce as the base is amazing like a Béchamel sauce mixed with tons of artichoke hearts and cheeses. It was so flavorful, rich, and melted together so well with the perfect thin crust that had a bite to it.
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
It's just a good slice of pizza. Is it my favorite? No. Could it be your favorite? Maybe. The artichoke slice is great, but it eats very heavy, so you may feel a little gross after eating it. The margarita/cheese slice, excellent. Thin, large, robust sauce, quality mozzarella, and basil. What's not to like? The vodka slice wasn't memorable. If I'm in the area this would be a place I'd stop at. I'd even go as far as to say that if you're intent on finding the best slice of pizza in NY give it a try. It's quality and who knows, Maybe it will be your new go to pizza spot.

Yelp
Such great, hot, large, unique pizza and the location is wonderful! There are never any lines at this location even though I've seen them form at other locations on occasion. The workers are always nice! Be aware of $15 credit card minimum though you can easily hit this with 2 slices. I wish they had diet coke in the mini fridge but other than this I like all their offerings and especially the free pizza toppings. Artichoke slice is the best by far but all are great!
google avatar

Diane Rukmini B.

Yelp
Great pizza! My favorites are the margarita, the artichoke, and the crab. The crab is super garlic. They took all of the tables and chairs out of the interior, which I don't like because I'm disabled and I can't sit down. They have tables outside on the sidewalk.
google avatar

Aimee H.

Yelp
Good bang for your buck as the slices are huge but they are quite salty and heavy. I enjoyed my initial first few bites but quickly grew tired and had to take breaks. The sauce on the artichoke pizza is good but the dough is thicker. I personally like thin crust so I enjoyed the crab pizza more. There were only a few people in front of me on an early Friday evening and I didnt have to wait long!
google avatar

Yelp
Hubby was dying to go to this place & the hype he made was right! Artichoke pizza is a must! Will be dreaming about it

Yelp
There are hundreds of pizza joints in New York, but this place offers it's semi-secret Artichoke pizza. It's rich, thick, creamy, buttery, cheesy, with chunks of artichoke throughout...its likely a 1000 calories? It's good! Not my favorite, but I ate the entire thing on my own, I'd recommend sharing it and getting some extra slices. The Crab Slice is also a unique offering...crab meat, herbs, fresh mozzarella, and white sauce, delicious! The also do an awesome square slice of pepperoni with lots of meat and hot honey, so good! $7 a slice is a bit heftier, but it's so good, worth it!
google avatar

Sandra B.

Yelp
The slices are huge; some are saucier than others. What struck me most though was the kind customer service. I was coming through mere minutes before catching my train back home, and they were very accommodating. I stuffed my face standing at one of their tables, but was able to carry another slice out the door.
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
Artichoke Pizza 4 super creamy, like an artichoke dip Crab Pizza 4 cheesy, crab chunks, lobster sauce, flavorful
google avatar

Ariana M.

Yelp
The artichoke pizza at this place is truly exceptional. It's reminiscent of savoring a creamy spinach artichoke dip from Trader Joe's, but in the form of a pizza. The crust is cooked to perfection, with a delightful salty and garlicky flavor that complements the toppings beautifully. While we also tried slices of pepperoni and crab pizza, it's undeniable that the artichoke steals the spotlight. In fact, we even created a heavenly combination by sandwiching the crab and artichoke slices together. The service was excellent; the staff offered to cut each pizza into thirds for easier sharing, but we declined, opting instead for the experience of diving into a generously-sized, dripping pizza. In my opinion, it tastes even better that way. The store offers plenty of space, but there are only standing side tables available for dining. Each pizza is served on two plates since the slice is so big.

Yelp
Great pizza AND GREAT MUSIC!!! Delicious!!! My fav is the Sicilian square, it has a crunchy crust and the most delicious tomato sauce or marinara....a must!!!! Famous for their artichokes slice, you owe it to yourself to at least try that slice once; It is delicious.

Yelp
One of my favorite slices in NY, been going the 14th street location since it was across the street (iykyk) Artichoke slice always hits, especially late night munchie
google avatar

Anjelica N.

Yelp
I got to go to New York for a few days, and I always heard about the artichoke pizza so that was a must try list. It was definitely worth the hype, it was so good! The pizza was so rich and creamy! The service was great, everyone was super nice. I can't wait to go back to New York just for this pizza haha
google avatar

Gabbby L.

Yelp
Exceptionally dissatisfying to walk into an establishment and receive a wonderful service from the employees and then have to experience a decent to awful meal. The pizza was warm close to cold and well we all know how that leaves the cheese. As far as the seating I think it was clean and appropriate enough space for people to sit by themselves. The service was again, good. My beef was definitely with the food haha!
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Artichokes and don't see this vegetable as a topping in many pizza spots so had to try Basille. Small and more of a takeout space with stand and eat areas as well outdoor seating. I saw about 8 different Slice options. The slices are huge and can easily feed two. Ordered the Artichoke and Pepperoni/Meatball slices. Artichoke was very good although not what I expected. It's a rich and decadent slice given the cream sauce and two cheeses. Thought the sauce had a seafood taste to it but ingredients don't indicate any seafood. More Artichokes please. Overall, unique slice and one is more than a meal. Pepperoni/Meatball was excellent. Great balance of toppings and sauce and really liked the Meatball topping. Service was quick and friendly. $15 min for Credit Card purchase. Good value for money given the huge slices. Will be back to try the Crab and Vodka slices.
google avatar

Yelp
W stoped for an slice, we say it was "for here" they give us the slice "for here" and a gut comes telling us we can not seat in a place it's completely empty. He sent us outside where we had to eat out slice standing. With jog reason. Overpriced and totally unfriendly place MYSELF OR ANYBODY I KNOW will ever spend a penny in this place.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
I've been to artichoke my entire 20s, it was where you'd end up after a great night out. It's exactly what you would expect, a normal pizza shop. Pretty small and usually packed. This was the first time I've had their crab slice and OMG! Did NOT disappoint! Definitely my new favorite!
google avatar

AnnMarie N.

Yelp
Earlier this year this dude at the railroad had a pizza box with a few slices of this Artichoke Basile pizza (which I had never heard of) - apparently he walked from 14th st to Penn station holding this pizza box so I was like hmmm it must be really something for All THAT! So Artichoke Basile went on the LIST. A coworker and I split each slice here - the crab slice (I've never had crab dip on pizza and I did not dislike it) - a good consistency, and wasn't overly salty - BUT later on I was so thirsty so so thirsty on the train - deceptively salty. The artichoke namesake slice was excellent. I recommend having just one specialty slice and maybe a different flavor like pepperoni and sausage. I recommend trying Artichoke Basile if it's on your list ! Staff was great efficient and friendly.
google avatar

Gloria C.

Yelp
My favorite pizza in New York. There's no comparison. To some it might be on the salty side but it tastes so good to me. I can't find anything like this outside of New York!
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
My friends and I tried the margherita slice (best one), pepperoni slice (good but not super cheesy) and the pepperoni vodka grandma slice (not bad but super heavy)! The pepperoni was good and the two NY slices were super crispy!
google avatar

Kristen H.

Yelp
The artichoke pizza is so delicious and addicting. Thank goodness the slices are so big!! lol. I almost wish they could just make a side artichoke dip, the sauce is that good. Highly recommend the pepperoni vodka slice as well. I haven't been here in-person yet, but it's nice having such a delicious late-night delivery option when pizza is needed!
google avatar

Falisha R.

Yelp
Omg yes this place was amazing! The pizza was sooo good!!! Heavy on the sauce it was so creamy, it was huge you really only need 1 slice. They were 8$ per slice which was not bad at all. The artichoke pizza was the best one , my wife liked the lobster, I got the vodka slice which was great too. The only thing I would mention to someone coming here is that if your traveling a long way for this pizza like we did (we took a subway all the way from Brooklyn) then don't expect to sit down at all when you get there. Literally no chairs. But still worth the trip for the good pizza. I think they should invest in some table and chairs, we probably would of spent more money lol.
google avatar

Cole D.

Yelp
Not my fav slice, but the artichoke is tasty and I understand the local appeal and hype. The artichoke was my fav out of an artichoke and Staten Island slice. It's a droopier, saucier pizza and a soft, not crunchy bottom crust. Not my fav. At times it felt like only a sauce or soup on top. Not my fav. The artichoke is fantastically flavored. It's really delicious. I didn't eat the crust, didn't look appealing. The staten has good toppings but for some reason the flavor didn't quite hit for me. Great kind service. Real nice guy inside. Hardly anyone in line. Got two bottle waters too and they have tons of drinks.
google avatar

Serena Z.

Yelp
I tried: *artichoke $6.95 *crab $6.95 *margherita $5.95 *pepperoni $5.95 I LOVE the margherita, soooo good, 10/10. If ur a fan of creamy slices, definitely go for the artichoke or crab. I wasn't a super big fan of the creaminess. my friend was a big fan of the pepperoni. for about $6 a slice, you will be STUFFED after just one, cus these sizes aint playing ‍‍ literally twice the size of my hand

Jesus M.

Yelp
Great pizza spot in New York. Service is fast and the pizza tastes amazing. The seating is practically non-existent but it's New York so there's no real seating anywhere.
google avatar

Prasiddha H.

Yelp
Had a chance to try the famous Artichoke Basilles but I'll be honest I didn't love it. This was a cute place with fast service - and I wanted to check it out given the reviews I had read. I ended up ordering: * pepperoni slice - I liked that the slice was so big but for some reason it was salty for me - especially coming from the pepperoni * Staten Island - this slice was definitely better with fresh ricotta onions and sausage - definitely on the heavier side and thicker crust than the average New York pizza This place is a local favorite so worth trying out if you want to add another pizza spot to the list.
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
Really slow service, they told me it'd take 20ish minutes for a full cheese pizza and I ended up waiting almost double that. There's also no chairs while you wait. The pizza also wasn't anything special.
google avatar

Gill S.

Yelp
Quality has gone down over the years. Not to the point where its terrible, but its certainly not the same. This isnt my first choice anymore when it comes to grabbing a slice.
google avatar

Seby I.

Yelp
Pizza here is scrumptious. I like the Artichoke slice which has to be eaten with a knife and fork. The Margherita slice is yummy but so big that I always have to take half home. At $6.48 a slices pizza is uber expensive but worth every bite. Have you counted how many slices of pepperoni are on a pepperoni slice? I lost count. I come to this location and my only gripe is that one has to stand and eat inside or at high tables outside as there are no chairs. The music is lovely. Jose told me that it is a playlist. A lot of Frank Sinatra songs are played which makes me feel like eating my slice as slowly as possible so I could dance to the music.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
I can't remember when I had artichoke pizza. But the pizza was amazing of course. The service was top tier. They weren't busy so they gave my group the service and attention when needed. Ambiance is old school. Definitely would come back here for their pizza
google avatar

Mary V.

Yelp
Best pizza in the world and a mouthwatering giant artichoke dip. Always a go-to for any visitor.
google avatar

Dana Y.

Yelp
Hungover and need a snack? Hungry and need a filling, cheap meal? Artichoke has your back! This place makes great artisan style pizza, and best part is you can buy it in slices to go! I have only gotten their signature artichoke slice because it's so delicious! It's a huge slice - creamy, full of artichokes, crispy, flavorful. It's very satisfying. The pies are pre-made and they heat it up after you order. They sell so quickly, so you don't have to worry that you'll get a stale slice. The guys there are always so nice, which always makes a NYC experience even better. I have also been to their other locations and they're all amazing.
google avatar

Olivia L.

Yelp
This is a solid pizza spot in East Village that is open late. There isn't much inside seating, so it serves more like a takeaway spot. However, there are several large tables outside that you can stand at. The slices are delicious, and way bigger than expected. I got the artichoke slice, which is $6.95. I was a bit skeptical for paying that much for a slice, but the size along makes it worth it. It was super creamy, almost like if that had just put a spinach artichoke dip on top. Be warned that it does contain a lot of dairy-- I don't have lactose intolerance, but even I was feeling a bit queasy after eating it. Overall, this is a great place to stop by after a night out. It's filling and fast, and easily located next to many East Village bars.

Brittany S.

Yelp
OMG! Me and my girls came here after an amazing girls day! The pizza was the absolute best! 10/10 would recommend
google avatar

Yelp
The artichoke pizza was very fresh and creamy. It was huge but a bit too salty for me. Artichoke Pizza 3.5/5 - $6.95

Yelp
Absolutely giant pieces Got one slice of vodka Delicious Saucy Sooooo cheesy and rich Paid ~$8 in cash ($15 min for credit)

Yelp
Since I was in the mood for something quick to eat and instantly thought of pizza, I was thrilled to discover what appeared to be a well-known yet distinctive pizza business nearby to add a little bit of intrigue. Plenty of space for standing tables both inside and outside, but no seats. I was grateful that the security guy that night took care of taking out and disposing of the trash from the patrons! I ordered the artichoke slice, of course, and while it costs a good deal more than a slice from any other store, it's unquestionably different. It's a thick slab of essentially pizza alfredo, topped with a layer of cheese and cream sauce, strewn with artichokes and greens, and HEAVY (both in terms of weight and flavor). Its dense texture is enhanced by the extremely crispy and thick crust, which also makes it difficult to eat without a fork and knife for the first few bites because it simply falls over when you pick it up. The pizza was delicious and of excellent quality, but because I'm not a big eater, I found it difficult to eat all of it because of the thick crust and heavy dairy. Additionally, since my slice only contained one piece of genuine artichoke, I wish there had been a little bit more of it. Even heavy eaters would likely be satisfied with just one slice, and I believe that if I were to return, I would split a slice with someone else. When you consider that one slice serves as a complete dinner, the small price increase is clearly justified. All in all, a clever take on pizza that's a terrific way to vary things up from the standard New York slice.

Richa T.

Yelp
I came here the other day for a slice and it was just a-okay. Pros: + Pizza by the slice + Better if you're a little inebriated to enjoy this place + Long lines Cons: - Takes a little while to open up - Pricey: $6 per slice IG: QueenOfAdventureNYC

Melissa Z.

Yelp
Wow! This pizza is indulgent! I love artichokes so trying this pizza was definitely on the list. Not to mention one slice is the size of a pizza box. Haha. It is so creamy and delicious but almost so indulgent I couldn't eat too much. Literally is like artichoke dip on pizza crust.
google avatar

Dilip J.

Yelp
Good pizza, their own spin on the standard new york slice choices. The Artichoke pizza is their signature slice. It reminded me of a great pasta dish. It is heavy and rich, so just one slice should fill you.
google avatar

Kevin

Yelp
I Bit expensive but for the size and Quality taste it's worth it the margarita Pizza top tier with the pepperoni!

Yelp
Since you're wondering... Every single time I come to Artichoke, the pizza is a great. I love pizza and find that I am pretty judge-y when it comes to NYC pizza and this place never disappoints. I typically get a pepperoni slice. I love that it has plenty of pepperoni for each bite and that the slice is really large and in charge. The crust is think, and cooked a little burnt which is my preference, and the rest of the dough is nice and thin. On my last visit I also ordered an artichoke slice, had to see what was in the name, and it didn't disappoint. It was messy, probably because of the different cheeses melting together and had a decent flavor. Although good, I think I'll stick with my usual pepperoni. The price is where you might consider not ordering but for the size of the slice, I think its worth it. Service is usually ok, fats paced, and ambiance is typical pizzeria.

Yelp
Always a favorite, had the pepperoni slice which was delicious ,huge slice and the sauce was excellent. Of course had to compliment it with a spinach artichoke slice which is beyond flavorful.
