"Aru is a restaurant with no bad angles. The room is a sea of warm, earthy tones that evoke the Aussie outback: terracotta brick floors, spotted gum woodwork, and banquettes the color of desert sand. Park yourself at the bar for the best view of the fire-fuelled open kitchen, where a team of white-jacketed chefs expedite polished plates with Chinese and Indonesian influence. Everyone’s ordering the pate en croute “with flavours of bánh mì”, but an order of claypot rice is equally necessary—maybe studded with fall-apart pork cheek, or hunks of Moreton Bay bug and bottarga—as is a tricked-up take on prawn toast made with wasabi-spiked spanner crab. Plenty of restaurants pitch the Asian-Australian concept, but few nail it so well." - Ellen Fraser

"Request a seat at the bar to watch chef Khanh Nguyen and his team cook your meal over the red gum wood-fired hearth. The menu is mostly Southeast Asian, but borrows with brio from other cuisines as well. This can mean an intricate pate en croute with flavors of banh mi, or a duck sausage served with caramelized onions on white bread-shaped bao, a playful take on the Australian sausage sanga. Even Nigella Lawson gave her tick of approval, coming back for the spanner crab fried rice." - Audrey Bourget, Sharlee Gibb

The staff were amazing. We had the $120 set menu ( we left with full stomachs) and the staff were so attentive. We were there celebrating a joint birthday and the staff petite happy birthday on the desserts which we thought were very considerate. Also when we dropped a fork, one of the staff noticed and bought over a new one immediately without us asking. They also refilled our water throughout the night every time it was running low which was a great tough to details. The cloak room, hot towels to wipe our hands after the spring rolls and the constant changing of our plate and cutlery after each course just showed how detail orientated the servers were. Fantastic experience and would absolutely recommend. A big thank you to the staff for being so amazing during our dinner.

One of the best dining experiences I've had in Melbourne! I loved everything we ordered. The clay pot rice was my favourite and I will come back for it🤤🤤 The atmosphere was great too. Space between tables was decent, which made it easy to chat😁

Came here for a birthday dinner! The restaurant specialises in Asian fusion food. The food is on the pricier end, the dishes we ordered were tasty but lacking the wow factor. We were quite full after the meal though (which is a plus).

A few hits, and a few misses. ARU was overall an enjoyable experience. We had the chef's choice and the portions were perfect albeit a little carby with bread and rice being served. I would have preferred either one, and replaced it with another protein. The duck was great, but the eggplant was not. The papaya salad was out of place, but felt needed in the end to wash off the heaviness. Overall, super yums thought 😋

Unbelievably great. Every single bite was full of flavour, I'd highly recommend this place. The duck is insane, I'd challenge anyone to find a fault with it. It's perfectly cooked, perfectly rendered and the sauce is crazy good. The scorched pavlova was bloody delicious as well. Flawless restaurant, 10 out of 10.

Other than trying to upsell me a little on trying to order more food. The service was solid from start to finish. I only came for the 14 day dry aged crispy duck as my lunch. It came with some red cabbage and onions. The sauce with the meal was the perfect combination to bring everything today. Definitely a sized plate you'd share with someone else if you're going to order a ton more food. Perfect for one person who wants a high protein meal of duck. Would come back to try other food with someone else for lunch or even dinner.

I went there on the 25th of February with my friends. We had a few entrees, three mains, and dessert. I really loved the Wagyu Marrow (entree) and the Duck (main); the taste was strong, but it was unexpectedly delicious. The price was reasonable. I love the taste of the food here, but it's similar to Asian restaurants in Asia. However, it's hard to find a taste like this in Melbourne. LOVE IT.😻
