Aru - Review - Melbourne - The Infatuation

"Aru is a restaurant with no bad angles. The room is a sea of warm, earthy tones that evoke the Aussie outback: terracotta brick floors, spotted gum woodwork, and banquettes the color of desert sand. Park yourself at the bar for the best view of the fire-fuelled open kitchen, where a team of white-jacketed chefs expedite polished plates with Chinese and Indonesian influence. Everyone’s ordering the pate en croute “with flavours of bánh mì”, but an order of claypot rice is equally necessary—maybe studded with fall-apart pork cheek, or hunks of Moreton Bay bug and bottarga—as is a tricked-up take on prawn toast made with wasabi-spiked spanner crab. Plenty of restaurants pitch the Asian-Australian concept, but few nail it so well." - Ellen Fraser

The 38 Essential Melbourne Restaurants

"Request a seat at the bar to watch chef Khanh Nguyen and his team cook your meal over the red gum wood-fired hearth. The menu is mostly Southeast Asian, but borrows with brio from other cuisines as well. This can mean an intricate pate en croute with flavors of banh mi, or a duck sausage served with caramelized onions on white bread-shaped bao, a playful take on the Australian sausage sanga. Even Nigella Lawson gave her tick of approval, coming back for the spanner crab fried rice." - Audrey Bourget, Sharlee Gibb

Love this place! Nice modern cuisine and focus more to modern asian cuisine. Love the raw beef tartare. The sriracha added a nice taste to the beef. Their spanner crab toast taste fresh, crunchy & creamy. Their cheesecake desserts not only pretty but also delicious. Love it! On the pricey side, but still worth the value.

Such a great foodie experience! This is the second time I'm coming to this place and I have to say that it's my favourite Asian fusion restaurant in the city. Great atmosphere thanks to the stylish and sleek design, top quality customer service (shoutout to Emanuele for looking after us) and obviously the amazing food. Every dish was a success! I can't wait to come back

By far the best restaurant we’ve visited in Melbourne ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ we opted for the tasting menu and it did not disappoint. Each course was packed with great texture and delicious flavors. The sourdough bread and claypot rice were favourites! Service was amazing, our table was comfortable - just wow. 100% will be coming back - thank you for making the last night memorable!

We had a wonderful evening. Every dish was both familiar and creative, perfectly blending Chinese and Western elements in both flavor and presentation. Each course came with delightful surprises. The dessert is especially worth recommending—the chocolate mousse was exceptional. It combined the rich, velvety texture of chocolate mousse with creamy ice cream, perfectly balanced with a layer of crisp chocolate and crunchy nuts. It was, without a doubt, the best dessert I’ve had this year. The service was warm and courteous. Between courses, the staff promptly cleared the table, ensuring a clean and refreshing dining experience as we moved on to the next culinary delight. We ordered the signature butter bread, oysters, crab tart, aged roast duck, clay pot pork neck rice, and roasted cauliflower. Every single dish was outstanding and comes highly recommended! Thank you again for an unforgettable dining experience!

We went to this restaurant for a birthday celebration and enjoyed every single dish from the set menu we had. The highlight of the menu was the duck, which was absolutely delicious and full of flavor. Overall, it was a modern and refreshing experience. I was looking for a set menu where steak wasn’t the main course and there was a touch of creativity — and this place delivered it perfectly.

My friend and I went for a dinner to Aru Restaurant and it was the best night. Food was delicious, service was impeccable, not one complaint! We tried the signature set menu + added oysters, with a couple cocktails and it was delicious. Flavours were lovely, dishes came out in a timely manner, waiters/waitresses always checking on our table & serving us very well.

The staff were amazing. We had the $120 set menu ( we left with full stomachs) and the staff were so attentive. We were there celebrating a joint birthday and the staff petite happy birthday on the desserts which we thought were very considerate. Also when we dropped a fork, one of the staff noticed and bought over a new one immediately without us asking. They also refilled our water throughout the night every time it was running low which was a great tough to details. The cloak room, hot towels to wipe our hands after the spring rolls and the constant changing of our plate and cutlery after each course just showed how detail orientated the servers were. Fantastic experience and would absolutely recommend. A big thank you to the staff for being so amazing during our dinner.

We went to celebrate our friends’ wedding last Saturday the 16th. Came for dinner for the first time, didnt really have high expectations regarding the food. I am pregnant and brought my 2yearold kid. Atmosphere was good, they have soft lights, made our photos look nice. We ordered the set menu, thought that it’s not going to make our tummy full. They asked if theres any allergies or anything that they need to avoid. We only said that since I’m pregnant, couldnt eat raw food. And they can whip some egg fried rice for my kid if we want to. Food came one by one and unexpectedly they were delicious and in the end made our tummy super full!! There’s one dish that I liked, they changed the raw beef to a fish with green sauce. And that was the star of my night! But everything was so good, but if I need to be honest, the least favourite was the clay pot broken rice, braised pork cheek with king brown mushroom and egg yolk. Although the pork cheek was delicious but overall it was too salty when mixed. Desserts were amazing! One last thing that I need to mention is, we had a server that stood out. He was the one who took our order, delivered most of our food. He was kind, friendly, smiley, great to make conversations but not too much. We just want to praise and thank him for the services. His name is Albert and he’s Indonesian. Hope he can continue to give great services :)
