Aru - Review - Melbourne - The Infatuation

"Aru is a restaurant with no bad angles. The room is a sea of warm, earthy tones that evoke the Aussie outback: terracotta brick floors, spotted gum woodwork, and banquettes the color of desert sand. Park yourself at the bar for the best view of the fire-fuelled open kitchen, where a team of white-jacketed chefs expedite polished plates with Chinese and Indonesian influence. Everyone’s ordering the pate en croute “with flavours of bánh mì”, but an order of claypot rice is equally necessary—maybe studded with fall-apart pork cheek, or hunks of Moreton Bay bug and bottarga—as is a tricked-up take on prawn toast made with wasabi-spiked spanner crab. Plenty of restaurants pitch the Asian-Australian concept, but few nail it so well." - Ellen Fraser

The 38 Essential Melbourne Restaurants

"Request a seat at the bar to watch chef Khanh Nguyen and his team cook your meal over the red gum wood-fired hearth. The menu is mostly Southeast Asian, but borrows with brio from other cuisines as well. This can mean an intricate pate en croute with flavors of banh mi, or a duck sausage served with caramelized onions on white bread-shaped bao, a playful take on the Australian sausage sanga. Even Nigella Lawson gave her tick of approval, coming back for the spanner crab fried rice." - Audrey Bourget, Sharlee Gibb

Enjoyed a beautiful birthday dinner last Friday. Everything, I mean everything I tasted was just unique and delectable. The duck and short rib, unreal!! Full of flavour and melted in your mouth. The portions seem small but surprisingly I was full. Loved the mocktails too!! The service was faultless, attention to detail was spot on! Very professional, friendly and advised us appropriately on how much food to order (I wish I got the ladies name but she had shoulder length almost curly hair). She was fantastic 💯. Loved the ambience and vibes. Toilets were clean!

With anywhere that’s a little popular, I had a lot of mixed reviews on Aru from my peers but I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it I went in blind and had no idea what to expect in terms of cuisine but loved the viet influences I could see throughout the menu (as a viet myself) Highlights were the bread because what is on the outside of it? I could devour 10 slices because it was deliciously addictive. And as someone who is picky about their fried rice, the morton bay bug fried rice with Yarra Valley caviar added on top was amazing!

Been wanting to come to ARU for quite a while! We were blown away by the oysters! They were soooo goood! Everything else was pretty good but the mains were a little too salty for us. However, that could also be because we didn’t order any salads 🤣. Service was great! They helped to store our shopping bags and coats and all the waitstaff were really attentive the entire night - thank you!

Google map stated here as Morden Australian restaurant, the menu are using local ingredients with Asian fusion. The food and service were good. Suitable for a quiet date or celebration. I came here for Pate en croute flavours of banh mi, yet it seems out of the menu long time ago, hope it will be back soon. Highly recommended the dry aged duck and wagyu tongue with arrow.

We recently held a function at Aru. While the event itself turned out to be a great success, the lead-up wasn’t entirely smooth. Our email communication with the booking staff felt a bit last-minute, and after one phone call I was left feeling a little uneasy, though I decided to put that aside. On the night, however, everything came together beautifully. The food was fantastic, and the champagne and wines were absolutely lovely. The ambience was warm and inviting, and the wait staff were attentive, friendly, and really added to the experience. Everyone had a wonderful time. Overall, despite some hiccups during the planning stage, the evening itself was excellent. I'd consider returning for the dining experience alone.

We have been to Aru many times, and yesterday’s Riesling lunch was our favourite! The food was spectacular and the matching wines were absolutely perfect. Manny did a wonderful job with the pairing, and explaining the wines to us before each course. We really couldn’t fault a single aspect of the lunch - it was incredible. We hope to see more events like this in the future as well!

Every bite was full of surprises! The dishes captured Southeast Asian flavours perfectly, authentic yet creative, with great depth and richness. Highly recommend the Wagyu tongue and bone marrow, simply outstanding! The atmosphere was lively but comfortable, and the staff were super friendly and accommodating, they even helped us store our belongings. It was a busy day, yet we never felt rushed. A truly enjoyable dining experience!

Love this place! Nice modern cuisine and focus more to modern asian cuisine. Love the raw beef tartare. The sriracha added a nice taste to the beef. Their spanner crab toast taste fresh, crunchy & creamy. Their cheesecake desserts not only pretty but also delicious. Love it! On the pricey side, but still worth the value.
