The 21 Essential Persian Restaurants in Los Angeles

"The scent of sangak bread baked over small stones inside a traditional tanour oven greets diners upon entering Asal in Woodland Hills. The bread is served alongside cucumber and tomatoes and can be enjoyed with asal (honey), sarshir (creme fraiche), panir (feta cheese), and sabzi (heaps of fresh herbs). The kalleh pacheh, a hearty aromatic breakfast soup made from the heads and hooves of sheep, is perfect for those looking for a more savory option." - Melody Barooni

Asal Bakery - Review - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"This classic Iranian bakery is a Valley staple and has been serving some of the best Persian cuisine in LA for a while now. But you’re in line for one reason: the sangak. The yard-long sesame encrusted flatbread is the almighty king here and you’re gonna want a lot of it. Asal isn’t really a dine-in type establishment so order in bulk and enjoy for days to come. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Google
Been coming here for over a decade and every time the service and the food is even better than the last. Truly exceptional authentic Persian cuisine. Very generous portions and great prices. Thank Ata jaan and your wonderful staff for making us feel like home away from home. Bless you all.

Google
I had the pleasure of enjoying breakfast at this place, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the food was simply amazing—authentic Persian flavors, fresh ingredients, and beautifully presented dishes. From the warm, freshly baked bread to the rich and aromatic tea, every bite was a delight. If you're looking for a fantastic Persian breakfast with impeccable service, I highly recommend Asal bakery & kabob. I'll definitely be coming back!

Google
We ordered the koobideh and tahdig, and unfortunately, both were quite disappointing. The koobideh had an overwhelming taste of turmeric, completely overshadowing the flavor of the meat. The tahdig with ghormeh sabzi and gheimeh was far from the authentic taste we were hoping for. The tahdig, as pictured, it's not a tahdig at all! Both the ghormeh sabzi and gheimeh were more like bland soups with little flavor. The only positive thing was the staff, who were friendly.

Google
The food is amazing! I appreciated that they do not make their stews too oily. The Akbar Joojeh tasted great, but I wish the rice was less oily. The owner is very friendly and attentive. One thing they can improve is their space. The tables are too close to one another and can get crammed. Other than that I loved everything.

Khurram Hassan

Google
A friend of ours from LA recommended this spot. I was picking up some items as a gift for someone I was visiting in Santa Barbara. This was such a friendly and comfortable space to visit. Almost everybody walking in was speaking in Farsi to the owners. The owners were so friendly and took their time to speak to everybody and smiled and joked. It was such a well run familybased business. Great to see small businesses run by families doing well and connecting with the community.

Google
We tried the Deezi and the Kalepache and the food was tasty with decent portions. The service was not good though and the servers had an unfriendly and disrespectful attitude from the very first moment. If you don’t care much about service and just want a tasty kalepache, this is the place. Otherwise, not recommended!

Google
Awesome place! Love the hot sangak!!! The koobideh is cooked perfectly! A++ for the cooks!!! And Ata is super friendly and super fast!! Keep up the great work, you guys!! I will be back for sure and I will be telling all my friends! Thank you!! 😊

Yelp
I've been coming here for over a decade because they serve kaleh pache. Everyone knows this dish is served with brain however I don't know when they started doing this, but they're charging extra to add the brain. But that is not what really bothered me this time. Their ab goosht barely had any meat in it. Why not just charge extra and add more meat. I mean this place is not cheap. But if money is preventing you from adding meat to a dish called "Meat & water" then charge more or just call it water or ab.

Diana P.

Yelp
Delicious wonderful food, large portions and friendly staff! I brought this to a dinner party and it delighted the guests.

Junie R.

Yelp
I had tried it at a friends house. The chicken was so tender and the bread was to fresh and soft. We ended up getting it carted for my daughter's party. They give you more than enough we had yummy leftovers for days. We ordered the combination kabob and lulu I just wish they gave you more bread. Also order the eggplant dip it's so good!!
google avatar

Dina S.

Yelp
I had a party to go to and needed some kashkeh bademjoon. I was about to go to another place and remembered Assal has amazing food and is close by. I called ahead of time and let them know what I wanted. I got there a little earlier than I expected but they had it ready to go and were so kind. The food was sooo delicious and they made it look so beautiful. I think the bad reviews are fake because my experience was soo opposite. Try it for yourself!

Dennis S.

Yelp
I was recommended this restaurant by a friend and decided to try it out for lunch one day and wow was I impressed with the quality of food and service. The kabob combo was amazing and it filled me up. The waitress gave us great service as well. Will definitely be coming back here soon!

Yelp
I like this place. The ash is delicious and I love the fresh sangak here. The staff are kind, although I think they can try to be a little more efficient. I was in a rush to leave and I understand there are other shoppers, but they could do a better job getting us through the checkout. There is a good selection of food from the menu for a good price. You can always call them and ask them if the ash is made on that day or not. I usually stop by before visiting parents to grab some ash. Their Ash Sabzi, when it's fresh, is one of the best I have had outside of Iran.

Yelp
I've been there tree times , three years ago, two years ago, and this 27 December 2023. I was shocked how big different is now from two years ago . Combination and Khalo Pacha was our order with the bottle of yogurt . When you order Kala soup, you definitely need quite a bit bread or nan . The first thing I was noticed it was so little bread that not even enough for one person. This order was for me and my wife. But anyway, when we got the food, the Kala soup was so little that wasn't enough for one person at all the top of it there was not enough meat , the combination was tasteless. Anyway think that was my last time I forgot to mention the price for this to dish or $75 bucks unbelievable which usually in this kind of restaurants are around $40-$50 , expensive expensive for the worst Service I ever seen in restaurant just don't go there. thank you, It's not about money that I am complaining it's about the food or should I see about both of them?

Marissa P.

Yelp
BEST Persian food in the 818 valley. Tara was my server today and she was very hospitable and friendly along with the other staff. We got the Chicken Kabob and Shish Kabob and it was sooo tasty and flavorful. I love that Asal's food is very rich in flavor and spices yet not greasy. Sangak bread is exceptional. Great portion sizes too. We will be coming back!!

Sahra I.

Yelp
I don't recommended this place to anyone that's all! we ordered beef kobide and dizi and Koko sabzi all came tasteless the rice was very dry and tasteless too.
google avatar

Nick R.

Yelp
We buy bread and sometimes eat food at this place. The bread is one of the best in the area. Food is also very delicious. I've had beef kebob with bread and geimeh. They were both very good although I liked the kebob better. They serve the food with fresh baked bread and they refill it foe you at no extra cost. Their service is very good and they fulfill your requests very quickly. I'd say the place can have a better air conditioning system but it's not something that I want to take a star off because of that.

Yelp
Fresh sangak and thick garlicky labneh and hot tea with refills...I felt very happy to eat in this cozy no-frills restaurant. The service was polite and homey. They have a sort of grocery in the store, with dates and dried fruits and nuts and even plates for purchase. They were helpful in telling me what things were. Would come back again and again for just for the sangak.

Edith P.

Yelp
Great tasty fresh nutritious food!! Very friendly and welcoming service that makes you feel at home!

Yelp
My Dear Persian Fellows, I'm very saddened with the news that I have to share with all of you but I've witnessed a tragic situation at this restaurant and I feel like I have to put this info out there. I think it's very important for us to stand up against bully in our community for once and all. During my last visit at Asal Bakery a young female server asked me to not leave tip on credit card for her since the money is collected by the owner. The tips you leave on your credit card does not go to the servers. This is tragic. And it really breaks my heart. I can't believe that we are still witnessing such behaviors towards the vulnerable population that try to make an honest living. Next time you would like to spend your money on food please support a business that treats people with respect and dignity.

Richard ..

Yelp
The chicken kebabs very good very juicy. I do recommend it Service was quick. and I was able to order it on the phone

Paulina H.

Yelp
10/10 experience. the food and service was beyond amazing. we ordered: combination kabob, hummus, kashke bademjan & yogurt. everything was fresh & insanely tasty. TARA was amazing and helped us with ordering. will be coming back

Yelp
The best Persian breakfast I've ever had! 100% the best way to start your day. Come here for all your Persian meals . The great customer service ! My best friends Persian so of course that means I love Persians 100%. My people!!!!

Yelp
The food is very delicious. The staff is vey quick and attentive. The service is also very quick. They refill the breads as soon you run out of them. The ambience is very family oriented.

Parwana R.

Yelp
I wish there was an option for 0 star for Asal bakery and his owner. He was super rude , food was horrible, the kobidah kabob was really old and smelled so bad. I respectfully asked the owner about how bad the food Was, he got mad. His face was telling that he knew about his food and he doesn't want to admit. I do not recommande this place to anyone at all. He serves his costumers with expired food. Hope the health department do some action against his restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
So sorry to say that this place lacks in food quality and customer service. I bought an Ash yesterday. Ash e Anar It was like red glue. Nothing in it other than a red goo. Absolutely disgusting in taste and how it looks. Will never go back. It's a shame how they reduced their quality as their food used to be ok. The manager was extremely rude. Will never go back!!!

Yelp
با رفتن به عسل بیکری بوی وطن رو احساس میکنی بهترین سنگک و بربری توی ایالت متحده داره غذاهاش هم‌همه لذیذ واقعا لذت میبرم با رفتن به اونجا

Yelp
Very fresh food very good customer service skills Everything is extra delicious but the Air conditioning On top of You're table Will either make you sick Or turn your food into ice cream
google avatar

Nely P.

Yelp
I wish I lived closer to Asal. It is the best persian food restaurant in my opinion. Food comes out so quick too since it has a half upper/half fast food vibe.

A H.

Yelp
We went for lunch to Asal Bakery & Kabob today. The lady was very nice, friendly, and she did her best, however, the owner was very loud and arrogant any one could hear his conversation on the phone and he did not care that guest/ guests were at his place for a quite lunch hour. The quality of the food was not what we were used to from this place. They have raised their prices tremendously. The high prices don't equate the quality of the food they offered. - The rice did not have any taste at all and looked like that a leftover of many days was warmed up over many times again and again. - Beef Kobideh tasted old and dry - Chicken kabob had barely any taste or flavor to it. - The only fresh items were Sangkak bread & green salad.

Yelp
Super NASTY LOW QUALITY FOOD Starving is better than eating these foods Piaze kapak zade! Abgooshte bedoone goosht ! Ba abe booye fasede moonde !!!! Kababe too sefide bi maze ! (Kabobe noon) kareh tooye salad!? disgusting Injaro be hichkas pishnahad nemikonam va dige poolamo too satle ashghal nemirizam !

Somayeh K.

Yelp
Kibideh kabab was very bad quality. Rice also was very squishy , I really don't recommend this place.

Kianoush S.

Yelp
The food is average, some better than others. The staff is less than friendly and not customer oriented. They don't even provide you with napkins. Tables and chairs are not clean. Their bread is super fresh and a definite must. No concept of service at this place.
google avatar

Jailene S.

Yelp
Mmmmm the bread the serve with meals is SOOOO GOOD. I want to come back for some soup next time I come. I tried the kabobs and they were 4/5... rice was good and salad was ok, could use a better dressing but all in all everything was good. They make the bread fresh and you can watch them make it too! Lots of bakery items to choose from. There are several tables outside for dining during Covid, big plus. No heaters though so bring a jacket if it's cold! :)

Magdalena S.

Yelp
Bad service and they don't have orders ready. They messed up my order all the time. Problem comunication
google avatar

S. J.

Yelp
After five years, I decided to visit the restaurant, again. I must say: this restaurant has improved drastically. I will visit this place more often. Also, l recommend the Asal restaurant to everyone.
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Everything is so expensive and the quality of the food is not even close to good. They charge for every small things,,, even for bags...(nowhere else charge for such things) Customer service doesn't mean only charging people! It has a different definition,,, these ppl don't know what it means I guess

Mas N.

Yelp
This place had amazing customer service and there food was amazing! So delicious! I'm New to the area and was feeling a little homesick and missed my moms cooking. My husband brought me here and I'm so glad he did because this will be my go to place when I'm Craving kabob. Not only was there food delicious but there presentation was very nice too. HIGHLY recommend this place as I am a satisfied customer :)

Leili P.

Yelp
Cozy Persian restaurant. We really love the food here. Joojeh kabab and koobideh are very tasty. We have tried all three sorts of ash that they have and liked them all specially ash reshteh. Ash anar tastes like lavashak and we liked the taste. Don't forget to try barbari and sangak breads that they make fresh. Menu is extensive for a small restaurant and we are looking forward to try the other options in the upcoming visits.
google avatar

Tyler A.

Yelp
I came here for pastries, but noticed that they're also serving kebab. Although I did not try the kebab, oh did they look good! We picked up baklava, zulubia and bahmbieh. They use honey and not liquid sugar to sweeten their pastries. None of the sweets were too sweet and we served them at home with tea. Everything was so good! I highly recommend! Next door is a Persian Market that is highly recommended too.
google avatar

Stewart D.

Yelp
Waited almost 30 minutes to order. Then they were out of what we came for. Waitress said "sorry." But not sorry enough to make any kind of gesture.
google avatar

AARON Z.

Yelp
Scam. I ordered the kaleh pacheh for my sick with covid grandmother who is from Iran and was craving a childhood favorite. When I brought the half empty cup of soup to her I was so embarrassed for such a measly portion. She accused me of eating more than half of it! She also didn't think it was very good either...what little they gave us
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
The kale pache and omelet are amazing, only reason for not being 5 stars is the seating inside is terrible, and the tables and very small to fit anything on

Bijan S.

Yelp
Lovely food. Lovely bread. Lovely and friendly staff. Thanks for loving what you do and taking pride in what you do.
google avatar

Elvis T.

Yelp
Excellent. I don't know what the low reviews are about. Food is excellent. We ordered the Chicken kebob.
google avatar

Den B.

Yelp
My introduction to the bakery was to obtain Sangak, the Persian flatbread with sesame seeds. It's so good there. Sheets and sheets hang ready to be bundled. We cut it into squares and freeze it- try sangak with yogurt and fruit. Then there are the walls of dried fruit and nuts. International middle eastern meals are available. They were serving about 5 groups inside and outside seating. I enjoyed Aash for lunch- the green herb stew. Hearty, fresh and garnished again with homemade yogurt cheese.
google avatar

Niyaz P.

Yelp
I am gonna start with tell you Best Anar soup ( pomegranate soup ) ever . For $6 soup you can be completely full and remember taste forever . Have it in mind it taste sour and delicious. You have to give it a try if you are going there. Like you are missing something if you do not try their Anar soup. If you want to try ethnic food and you do not want to spend too much this is a place to go. It looks like a family business. The girls that are working there super duper friendly and nice. Restaurant is small but still surprisingly can fit a big group of people :) They have a small plate for tah deig which is not small plate at all . It would completely fill you in . They have 2 different kind of stew ( ghaime and ghorme sabzi ) coming with it, and was reasonable price. I like Ash Reshte ( Persian soup ) a lot but if I get there and have to choose between ask reshte and anar soup I'll go with their anar soup . However their ash reshte is amazing and delicious as well. I did not try their sweets but they look delicious :) Even that I always want to try somewhere new but o am sure I will go back there next time I be in LA.
google avatar

Janna C.

Yelp
Do you want affordable kebab? Look no further than Asal. The lunch special was reasonable too. From chicken koobideh to juju and beef koobideh they are delicious kebab. Nice and fluffy saffron rice and a perfectly grilled tomatoe. Note to me for future: ask for salad to be plain with dressing on the side since I didn't care for the sauce. You must order their mast o mousir - it was delectable. We literally wiped the bowl clean using the fresh from oven toasted sangak. Yum yum We purchased several of their homemade fresh sangak bread to go. So much better than what we had been buying from the grocery store in SM. This had a better taste, flavor and texture. Plus it is always so fun to get to watch it being made in front of you. We will plan to come here for our morning toast bread needs once a month and stock up each time.
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
I have been here a few times and always order the sangak bread with honey and cream (so good) along with the paneer and sabzee; I usually end up asking for more of the sangak bread. Order it with the Persian tea and it's the perfect breakfast to start your day. It's super refreshing and healthy. Luckily, I only live a a few minutes away from this place!
google avatar

Darcy O.

Yelp
First time here. My Persian friend who lives nearby brought me here and we got food to go. It's been a while since I had authentic Persian food. We ordered a decent amount of food and the wait was about 15 minutes which wasn't bad at all. We ordered a koobideh kabob plate with rice, one extra rice and two small Ghormeh Sabzi stews. Love these two particular food items!! Sooo good and they were really flavorful and super tasty. Definitely will be back to get food to go again.
google avatar

Nader N.

Yelp
Amazing food and great service with a lot of variations. One of the best Middle Eastern bakeries in town !

- -.

Yelp
great food , staff and prices. its like a mini fastfood sit down restaurant. lots of to go so its always fresh. great in house sangak bread.
google avatar

Sepehr A.

Yelp
It was so bad, we ordered Kalepache and they didn't have the whole menu but they charge like the whole menu. The taste was also awful.please don't support them. Hopefully they will care about review and make better food.
google avatar

Pardees F.

Yelp
One of the best Persian bakeries in the valley. Located next to in n out on that strip on Ventura with tons of other local Persian shops, Asal is definitely somewhere I stop myself from going because I will buy all their pastries!! I also come here for fresh bread, kabob, and osh soup; everything is amazing! The pastries are the perfect gift and are made fresh every day. They have a huge selection of different French and Persian pastries, cream puffs, baklava, and more! The people who work there are so nice and it just has such local authentic Persian vibes to it. They are open late at night which is great also if you're craving that late night kabob! The prices are also really good. So happy to have this bakery/restaurant here! Ample meter parking on the street which is free after 8pm.

Sia J.

Yelp
Sorry I got Persian Sangak bread from them. The bread was descent. No complains but the guy is just rude to customers. So I will drive a bit on go to Sabzi or better yet go to the source Bread Brothers on Reseda.
