The 38 Best Restaurants in Taipei | Eater

"Pig intestine vermicelli served in a thick pottage soup sounds unconventional, but don’t overlook it. The silky-thin rice vermicelli, cooked in a starch-heavy broth of aromatics, harmonizes with the chopped intestines, which have a rubbery texture and aren’t at all overpowering. Sambal on the side is a wonderful addition for spice lovers. [$]" - Clarissa Wei

Google
Popular rice noodles spot - they have 2 sizes and self serve for sauces (garlic, spicy, and vinegar). There's pieces of pork intestines in the soup Super thin and served hot in soup. There's no seating, just stand under the fans to stay cool in the summer. It's a comfort food but honestly not super special We were served very quickly after paying

Noodle comes in small and big. Tourists and locals queue for it. For me, it is nice to have a bowl of broth/soup to warm the stomach in the morning. Some reviews said it is nothing special and some really like it. Like any other food it really depends on individual taste and where they originated. Certain countries practically live on soupy food so having soup here its like "normal". But for some who lives on bread and more western affair, this will be a "treat". Give it a try and judge it yourself. Yes only a few benches to sit on.

Xin Hao

Google
Slightly salty and tasted some oysters which are not as fresh. Regardless, this stall is a constant hit amongst both locals and tourists in the area. No tables available but there are seats around. Service is super efficient and you can choose the size of the bowls to your preference. Only cash allowed or youyou card if you have. Not much queue mostly but that’s also because they are cleared pretty fast. Still worth a try regardless, especially if you are in the area.

If you're here, you're here for one thing. I always make sure to come back when I'm in Taiwan. It's delicious and classic and very hot, but even in super hot weather you'll find a line. The line moves very fast and there's no seating, so you'll find people eating standing around the store. There's a small station where you can customize yours with extra garlic, hot sauce and vinegar, which I would recommend.

Google
Ate at this place last March and ordered the rice flour noodles. It was good and perfect for the cold weather. They had condiments on the side if you wanted to add some spice. I didn’t have to wait long, everything was served quickly. There were no seating options, but it’s great for a quick snack. The staff was friendly too.

Google
Order: 1 small portion of flour-rice noodle 💛 The noodles and broth tasted great. The texture reminds me of enoki mushrooms, a great snack/light meal. The pricing is reasonable for the portion. 💛 There’s extra seasoning available if you need to adjust to your flavor profile. 🤔 The line is long, but the service is super quick and efficient. Limited English menu available. 😵‍💫 Located inside Ningxia Night Market, so it’s SUPER crowded to navigate to.

I'm usually not in to these pork intestine type noodle soup but it was not bad. So for people that like it . I understand it should be good. This is more of a eat on street quick type of place. Interesting Eat it while it's hot tho Pay cashier Get ticket Walk to the left they scoop it for you

Must Try local delight! If you’re in Ximending and looking for an authentic taste of Taipei, Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle is a must-visit. I had the small bowl, and to my surprise, it was already quite filling! The broth is rich and flavorful, with a slightly peppery kick that warms you up instantly. The noodles are soft and silky, and the bits of braised intestine add a unique depth to the dish — even if you’re not usually into organ meats, it blends in so well that you might end up loving it. There’s no seating, and you’ll likely be standing while eating, surrounded by both locals and tourists. But that’s part of the charm — it’s fast, delicious, and full of energy. For something so simple, it leaves a strong impression. Definitely worth trying if you want a quick and satisfying local experience in Taipei.

Yelp
Who would've thought intestines could taste so yummy. No seats except for a few benches outside. Line moves quick. Lots of people eating here. I'd almost say I like it better than beef noodle.

Yelp
If intestines are not your thing, this is definitely one to pass. Also I thought the white pepper was way too strong in the soup. The soup was so gelatinous from the thin rice noodles, and the flimsy little plastic spoon they gave literally could not scoop up anything. I don't want to yuk anyone's yum, but I was just not a fan personally. If you like intestines this may be a good one to try, it's definitely a popular spot.

Yelp
This food stand is in Ximending. There was a lineup but it moved very fast. They only take cash. There was only one type of noodle sold and you order small or large. We got the large size. The rice noodles have been soaking in the soup base for a while and was so flavourful. This is definitely a must try.
google avatar

Seraphina T.

Yelp
Delicious and hot. The soup is smooth and thick from the rice noodle. They constantly stir to prevent noodles from sticking. And at the price that it is at, this is a perfect snack to go along with all the other street food in the area! The storefront does have some seating outside. And sauces are self serve. Service is efficient!
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy and inexpensive oyster and intestine rice noodles in sauce. You can get condiments on the side. The small size is less than $2 USD. You can get a large that's double the size for an additional $0.50 USD. We were in the area after eating beef noodle soup and had to make a pit stop to eat one of these!
google avatar

Alisa B.

Yelp
So delicious! A small cup for $150? I could eat this everyday, I was actually really surprised. The intestines were cooked perfectly and the soup was thick. Not too salty! Great flavor. On a Friday at 9:30 AM, there was no line! However, dozens of people were standing around eating it. Quite popular - even for breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
Very popular spot in Ximending! They are known for their cheap and flavorful rice noodle. The line is usually quite long since it's located in a busy street market area, but it goes by fast. The workers constantly stir the noodles so it doesn't clump up. The broth reminds me of sweet and sour soup, and the noodles are very comforting and delicious. The only thing I didn't like about this/unaware is the intestines in the soup... I thought it was mushrooms so I just ate it but it was very chewy and not the best tasting. But, since it's so cheap (small for less than $2), I didn't mind it!
google avatar

Cheok Meng L.

Yelp
Got a small portion - there's a lot in the bowl and the textures all combined make it a fun lil snack/meal. I would've definitely gotten more cilantro if I could though. Watch out though, it's hot
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
My favorite place in Taipei to get mee sua. A bowl costs less than $5 USD! This is located in Ximending so expect crowds and a line. It is also standing room only so you will see a lot of people standing around on the street eating mee sua. The flavors of the broth are amazing and adding the vinegar, chili and garlic sauce made it even better. Be warned that there are intestines in the soup, which my boyfriend wasn't aware of and thought it was mushrooms haha
google avatar

Suzanne C.

Yelp
Popular place with only togo option so everyone stand nearby to eat. The food is delicious!
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
A delicious food store selling one item - their pork intestine rice noodle which is so so delicious! No designated table seating so you'll see a crowd of people standing around or sitting on stools outside of the restaurant. Don't be intimidated by the line, moves fast. They sell a small bowl and a large bowl, personally I always go with a small bowl so I have stomach room for other goodies! A must stop if you're in the Ximending area. You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
One of the places people say you HAVE to come to. However, I unfortunately didn't enjoy the flavor personally. I'd had a very fishy/bbq roasted flavor from the pig intestines and other spices. The soup was a think curry like texture. Hard to pick up with your spoon so it's easier to slurp and get closer to the bowl. Price is in the higher side for a small bowl and I'm thinking it might be because of the popular demand of the place. If you're adventurous maybe give this a try.
google avatar

Cecille W.

Yelp
So good we came back twice! The bowl of flour rice noodles doesn't look like much in photos, but it's hot, comforting, and packed with flavor. The line can be pretty long like most popular spots in Taipei but it moves quickly since the ordering process is so efficient. There is DIY sauce that you can add to your bowl - chili, garlic sauce, and vinegar which gives your bowl even more flavor. My boyfriend who isn't usually a fan of mee sua if the broth is too starchy (which this one isn't), loved Ay-Chung and was the one who suggested we come back for a second time. A must try if you're in the Ximending district!
google avatar

Cindy Z.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Flour-Rice Noodle and it's delicious! It's a soup-like consistency with strings of pork intestines which seem like oyster mushrooms and other mix-ins. It almost reminds me of a hot and sour soup too, but better! Definitely need to try this if you haven't. You know a place is good if they only sell one thing.
google avatar

Jacky C.

Yelp
First thing I ate in Taipei and sets the bar for what's to come on this trip. As you may know, Ay-Chung is known for serving only their signature flour rice noodles: small or large. I recommend adding some vinegar and pureed garlic from their condiment station for some enhanced flavoring. There's bit of pig intestines and the thick gravy has a smoked fish flavor as it's made with bonito flakes. Man, writing this review makes me want to get another bowl right now.

Yelp
highly recommended by others so my expectations were thru da roof ~ been here handful times w diff groups of peeps; not bad but not amazing either there r no tables (i knew ahead of time b4 ever tryin) so patrons squat & eat, old school u r lucky f ya get a lil stool during high traffic times after tryin flour rice noodle @ multiple food stalls all over taiwan, my fav would b inda xinyi district, called ah-dee-zai (no english name actually), 阿弟仔 inda xinyi district has my heart

Yelp
Want to try unique a Taiwanese flavor without fear of what might be in the food? Order the plain noodles and add spices to your liking (or just copy the next guy). The flavor is deliciously Taiwan and if the line is too long, the restaurant is now a chain all over Taiwan so you can just go to the next one
google avatar

Wennie H.

Yelp
Better than I thought it would be. I was told this was a very popular Taiwanese specialty. It usually comes with intestines is my understanding but I got it w/o. The noodles were smooth with the slightest chew, the broth is thick and packed full of seafood/fishy flavor. I didn't think I would like it but enjoyed it more than I thought. It's SUPER hot temperature wise, so be mindful when you are literally sitting in 90+ weather trying to slurp this down, you will burn your tongue. Service is super quick. The smallest size is about $2 usd, good portions.
google avatar

Angelica S.

Yelp
A very short line at 7pm on a Tuesday night mid summer. Employee at the cash register tells me that a small is enough. But I got him to sell me a large by explaining that I'm hungry. He agreed to sell me a large size noodle. As an American, portion was just right. The noodles were tender and the broth flavorful. I would have liked more veggies. But there are no options. It is small or large. So enjoy your noodles!
google avatar

Sheng L.

Yelp
One of my favorite must stops in Taipei at Ximending. Line always looks long but they're super fast as all Taiwanese services are. They definitely don't seem to be the IT business anymore. Lines are a little bit shorter, almost all tourists now like every single retail at Ximending. Taste may seem to be a tiny bit off as well but still good enough for me to keep returning. I remember when they opened up Los Angeles one 20+ years ago the line was 2 hours but soon closed in 2 years operating which was quite sad for us LA chinese locals.
google avatar

Ray P.

Yelp
After seeing so many great reviews over years of traveling to Taipei, we tried it. I personally have had much better at the street stand in Suangcheng street market. The texture of the noodles is fine but the flavor with intestines doesn't appeal to me. I prefer the pork rogan mein shen. Definitely the hype is continuing from tourists who have their first taste at this well advertised place in Ximending.
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
Wow - I feel it's my duty to review this place right away after trying it. Am gonna stop buying again tomorrow to have a 2nd.
google avatar

A T.

Yelp
Such a good place for cheap and good rice noodles in thick soup (mian xian) with intestines. I like that they top it with basil instead of cilantro for an added twist. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
Every single time I go to Taiwan, I have to eat here at least 3-4 times. I have had this at other stalls and shops, but this place is the best one. I always add extra hot sauce, vinegar, and soy sauce. Their hot sauce is so good that you can purchase a bottle. If you like cilantro, you can ask for extra.
google avatar

Xiaoting X.

Yelp
Interesting texture of the thin noodle where they grabbed the soup well onto the noodle themselves. However, flavor is quite mild and not too memorable. Good experience to try as many locals seem to enjoy it quite a bit.
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
This is one of the places I usually stop in Taipei. This is legendary in Taipei, from street seller to owning the prime location store and 3rd floor with cash purchase, the founder was a successful story of hard working. It is still popular and famous. People line up no stop to buy and try the noodles. The price has gone up several times on the past decades and it does not seem to stop people and tourists from coming. This is a memory for me and the portion is small. Not really for a meal but sort of a snack in between meals. There is no service here. Everyone works fast to move faster. You get to use the vinegar, garlic and chili yourself. And you recycle the garage yourself, and you don't get a table to enjoy. Most of the people stand and consume this on the street in the store front. Come and try so you know why it is famous.
google avatar

Mandi F.

Yelp
Super cheap, super fast, super good. This place is a machine. They serve one dish, the rice noodle soup, in two sizes - regular or large, and they just speed through the huge line of people. Get in line, order and pay, pick up your order, then go to the self serve sauce section. You can add hot sauce, garlic or vinegar to your soup. There are no seats, so everyone is just gathered around the area slurping it all down. This place was amazing.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Come to Taiwan, eat all the foods, and go home happy. This stop is a must. The vermicelli noodles here are absolutely delicious. The consistency is perfect, the flavor is top notch, the line is long (but moves so fast), and the bowl is super cheap. Don't even think twice. If you're looking to have a sit down meal, and order any additional kind of dishes, go elsewhere. Their simple menu boasts 2 things...small bowl and large bowl...that's all. Once you order and pay, it's practically the Jimmy John's of Vermicelli...in your hands within a minute. The location is great, just get off Ximen Station (where blue meets green) and it's at Ximending, an area with a bunch of other foods (like Hot Star), drinks, and stores so once you're done, you can walk around and shop. Definitely coming back here!
google avatar

Yelp
Trying it out for the first time this very popular rice noodle place called Ay-Chung. It is a small stall with no tables or chairs, you just order in the front, pick it up on the side and then you just stand around eating this bowl of noodles. I have never tried it until recently just to see why so many tourist want to try it out. To me the taste is alright but the noodles aren't that amazingly good. They were just alright. But still hoards of people come and eat this stuff. It is cheap and decent so I guess it makes sense. Also the location is very easy to find, when you see a hoard of people standing and slurping the noodle soup this is the place. Oh yeah and if you want to order something else, they don't for any choices but this one item!
google avatar

Wan L.

Yelp
My fave meal in Taipei! It's cheap and delicious! This is a must stop in Ximending. Don't let the line scare you away, it moves quickly! Order at the stall, pick your size (small or large), pay and it's ready within seconds. You can add condiments (vinegar, garlic and chili oil) to your liking.

Yelp
Opened since 1975, located in the Ximending area, this area is kinda like street food heaven. There are so many shops selling a little bit of everything, it is super crowded and super popular. This shop is one of the most popular vendors and there is always a line of people waiting on it, you should be one too. The food: Oyster Mee Sua aka Oyster Noodles- This is their claim to fame and I think the only thing they sell, they sell a small and a large. I can't begin to explain why I enjoyed it so much since it is pretty basic/straightforward flavors. It kinda reminded me of a shark fin soup base but with thin yellow vermicelli noodles and intestines. It seems like the perfect breakfast, snack, winter food, drunk food etc. You can add vinegar, garlic, and chili to taste. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=2ZmlJucabvIPo6hyaxw_OA&userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA

Yelp
Ay-Chung Flour Rice Noodle has been open in Taipei since 1975 in the Ximending shopping district. It's definitely popular as there was already a crowd at the stall in the early morning. Bowls of its distinct noodle were served quickly, it happens to be the only menu item and all I had to do was specify the bowl size which costs only $1-2. This thin noodle is unlike any other, with a soft and slurpy texture. The thick soup has a smokey fish flavour, and contains salted pork intestine bits. This combination actually works well for a cheap eat, and extra chili can be added as well. This place is standing room only but fortunately it didn't take long to slurp down the noodle as a mini-meal.
google avatar

Richie Z.

Yelp
So good and cheap! There's almost always a big crowd around this shop but don't worry, the line moves fast. The broth is thick and gelatinous, super satisfying especially on a rainy day. The primary protein in this dish is intestine, which may put off many potential customers. That said, I'd strongly urge anyone who hasn't tried it yet to give it a shot. It's like a fattier, more tender calamari. Expand your horizons and you won't be disappointed!

Wendy M.

Yelp
Your choices are small or large and you get a cup of noodle soup that's a bit sweet and sour. It's delicious and there's a reason so many are lined up for this. Don't miss the counter with the garlic, chili oil, and soy/vinegar to add to taste. It's also really nicely priced. Worth a quick stop when you're In Ximending.
google avatar

Judy G.

Yelp
This was place highly recommended as a must try if you're in Taipei. I didn't read too much into the reviews and just came here and ordered it. Honestly I didn't know exactly what I was eating except that it's some kind of noodle. Although I never tried anything similar to it, it was quite flavorful and good. I liked it. It's a simple and efficient process, there's one cashier and after you pay there is another guy scooping the noodles in a paper cup. Barely waited a minute. There is no seating so everyone is standing around. What I really liked was how the trash was so organized. You pour your leftovers in a bucket (if you have any) then you stack your empty cup on the tray where everyone stacks it and you throw any napkins and spoons in the trash bag. Stacking empty cups together really saves space in the trash bag! I thought that was the neatest part of the place besides the noodles!
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
As I was told by the guide of my food tour, if there's a queue, that means that it's good. And here at Ay-Chung, there was a queue though it moved quickly. Prices displayed on the glass by the register and you move through the line. At the end, here's your bowl of delicious noodles. And yes, it was super delicious. I can understand why it's so popular. Rich broth, lots of flavor, noodles were perfectly al dente and edible with the spoon. Yum! Tip 1: Those aren't mushrooms. They're intestine. I did eat one or two but set the rest to the side. Tip 2: Cash only.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
My friends recommended i check this out for breakfast and i was so hyped :) the line was pretty long but they move super quick which was a plus. Right in the heart of ximending you get thin noodles in a somewhat thick broth with cilantro and tastes a bit oyster-y and i didn't think i would enjoy it as much as i did. So goood and filling i got the large. Gotta stand and there's no tables out there really but everyone is just chillin eating in the area or you could walk around to eat more food!

Yelp
Blissfully ignorant, indeed it was blissful to not read anything about Ay-Chung before going there. I only noticed the massive crowd out front of this tiny Ximending shop whenever I visit the shopping area. So, I decided to give it a try. It was awesome. Not as gelatinous as most people make the soup out to be. The flavor is deep, meaty, smokey, with a strong seafood flavor. Like many of the dashi stocks I am used to, but this was something completely different. I thankfully did not add any seasoning, so I could really taste the soup. Blissfully, I chewed on the flavorful and wonderfully toothsome meat that I thought was chopped razor clam. Loved every bite and every second of the experience. Really thought that I was getting a sweet deal on seafood. Went home months later and talked to a friend that informed me it was intestines in the soup and laughed at me. I don't care what is was or how much is costs, it was delicious and I would do it all over again a million times. See you again on my next visit Ay-Chung.
google avatar

Lisa Y.

Yelp
Located in Ximending, Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodles is definitely a popular spot! There's usually a long line, but man, the workers there scoop the noodle soup into bowls fast! Choose from a cup or bowl of steaming hot (be careful!) noodle soup, perfect for a cold rainy day! The soft, thin noodles are mixed with chewy pig intestines. There's also a station to add your own chili, garlic, and vinegar to taste. Limited seating is available inside, but lots of people just stand around in front of the shop and eat it! When you're finished, there's a bucket to dump any leftover noodle soup and stack your bowl for recycling.

Yelp
This place, Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle has been around since 1975 and is on every list of must try eats while you're in Taiwan. It's in the Ximending area so an easy stop if you're in shopping in the 'hood. I dropped by on a late Monday morning (around 11:00am) and there was no wait. There were a ton of people hanging around slurping their noodles up as there's no place to sit. Three condiments on the side if you want to spice up your soup (vinegar, garlic and chili). There's only one item on the menu but you can choose between small ($55 NT) and large ($70 NT). - Oyster mee sua ($70 NT large) - the oyster noodle soup is made up of intestines, thin noodles and cilantro. It looks pretty plain and simple but there's good flavour and hidden depth to the broth. Making something this simple is a hard thing to do. The noodles look like they'd be mushy but they actually have a nice bite to them. I also added a bit of the chili sauce halfway through and it added a tasty layer of heat. The best part was easily the intestines; I wanted more! Definitely worth a try.
google avatar

Viet T.

Yelp
The soup was good, but perhaps it was hyped up a bit much for me. For anyone curious it tastes a lit like pho which the noodles have absorbed too much of the soup and become almost the consistency of gravy. I would get it again if I had a major hangover like I did that day or on a cold day and in need of soup. I gave this an extra star simply because I was super impressed at how quickly an efficiently they served everyone. There was a line half a block long and it only took me about 10 minutes from when I lined up until I had a bowl in my hand.
google avatar

Sherry Y.

Yelp
I've seen pictures of this and thought how good can this be?? It was located closed to our hotel in Ximending and had a long line (moves quickly). Order/pay (very cheap!) and then pick up your order. I was pleasantly surprised that it was pretty good! There's no seats here so everyone stands around to eat this. Noodles were soft and soupy. Soup was thick and flavorful.
google avatar

HeeJin C.

Yelp
MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE FROM THIS TRIP. I am so sad that I dont know where I can find this back in the States. It was a thick broth with noodles and intestines and it tasted AMAZING. The line goes fast and is worth waiting for!
google avatar

Mich E.

Yelp
Quick, tasty, and super cheap!!! If you see this while you're walking around, give it s shot! The small is pretty big too (at least for me it was) Even if the line is long, it moves super quick. Finding a place to sit may be an issue, but you can jus find a spot to stand and enjoy it too! Worth the try!

Yelp
The rice noodles place is so popular, always long waiting line, and people all eat on the street, the taste was ok.

Yelp
Famous soup noodle stall in Ximending. Two years ago I came here and unfortunately my tummy was chock full of hot pot that there was no room in the gas tank to try to it. However the lineup that I witnessed that evening made me a bit sad for what I was missing out. Fast forward to 2018 and now I'm here for business! Texture is a bit gloopy. The broth is an interesting flavour. I was thinking is it pork? Is it beef? Is it delicious! Hell to the yes! Noodles are soft and there are bits of meat mixed in. They have some vinegar as a condiment to zip it up. Overall it's everything and then some. If squeamish about pork intestine put it aside. For me it's just like a chewy mushroom. Can't wait to come back for another big bowl which was around the equivalent of $2.70 CDN.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Arrived in Taiwan. Read that ximending was the place to be. Did not even check into the hotel and went straight for this food place. Read about it on some blog on the flight and thought I should give it a try. Let's be clear, this is not your regular noodles. There is pork intestines and oysters in it. But it did not disappoint. Ordered a large bowl, finished it and wanted more. If you like pork intestines, this is a must try. I went on a weekday so the line was not too long. Noodles was freshly cooked as it was steaming hot!

Yelp
If you're looking for a place to try out some Taiwansese mee sua, Ay-Chung (阿宗麵線) is the place for you! I'd recommend trying this place first if you have never had it before to get a sense of what it should taste like. My order is always a large bowl with intestine and oysters. You can ask them to omit intestine and/or oyster but those are the best parts of the noodle soup! I would say it definitely has an interesting texture, the soup is kind of goopy, intestine and oysters are chewy, the noodles are thin... but it's wonderful. This place is always a must go for me whenever I am here. Definitely check it out if you are in the area. There might be a ton of tourists here since tour busses drop a lot of people off in this area but mee sua is one of Taiwans trade mark dishes so it's a must try!
