We live in CC and love Rookies (go there at least a couple of times a month). We'd been meaning to try their sister property, Backyard, for months now, and tonight finally did. Sadly, we left disappointed.
First, the overall vibe was just dull. Granted we were there pretty early and maybe things pick up as the evening goes on. But, despite being reasonably busy, it was just soooo quiet. Rookies is always hopping, no matter the hour, so we were surprised that it was so much less so here.
Our biggest disappointment, though, was the bang for our buck. We enjoyed our food, but thought the serving sizes were not worth the prices charged. We started with an order of deep-fried cheese curds with marinara. We thought we were getting these at the happy hour price. [This was our mistake. We thought the happy hour was every day, but it is only M-F. The $5 HH price would have been about right for these; the $8 regular price was a bit above the odds. (And, we probably would have not ordered them had we realized we'd be paying full price.)]
But, the sandwiches. OMG! I ordered the "Chicken in a Biscuit," which is described on the menu as "smoked chicken breast, melted white cheddar, tomato, herb-mayo on our house made biscuit." Per this, I thought I'd be getting an actual chicken breast; but, I, in fact, got only a few slivers of meat. I actually wondered at one point if they'd forgotten to add the chicken as there was so little of it (and, what was there was kinda masked by the cheese and mayo). It tasted fine, but hardly worth the $9 price tag for what was essentially a small biscuit with some topping. My husband ordered the burger, which more closely resembled an actual burger, but, he felt, was still about half the size he was expecting. His overall comment was a lament of how much further the money we paid would have gone at Rookies.
I guess we're glad we finally checked out Backyard (?). We'll definitely continue to patronize Rookies. But, as far as Backyard is concerned, we are one and done.
