Authentic Argentine pizza, fugazzas, empanadas, and milanesas.

"Banchero, which has a famous location back in Argentina, is all about thick, cheesy Argentinian pizza. They’ve got dozens of options, but the fugazzas—a Buenos Aires specialty—are our favorite. These pizzas have a similar height and depth to Chicago deep dish, but that’s where the similarities end. Banchero’s cheese fugazza has mozzarella baked both on top and inside the dough. It’s topped with a blanket of charred white onions and one lonely olive sitting in the middle of every slice. The milanesa here is also wonderful, served in a handful of huge versions that all hang off the plate like Shaq on a twin bed. If you are, somehow, still hungry, get the biggest alfajor we’ve ever seen in our lives for dessert." - ryan pfeffer, mariana trabanino, virginia otazo
"Whether you love Argentinian pizza or want to meet it for the first time, you should head to Banchero. Toppings are a blanket of charred white onions and one lonely olive sitting in the middle of every slice. It is a pizza for people who think cheese is the best part of pizza." - ryan pfeffer, virginia otazo, mariana trabanino
"The internet roasted Messi when he posted a picture of his takeout pizza from Banchero, but those people clearly do not know the joy of Argentinian pizza, which is a gift to the world, or at least the parts of the world that love cheese. Banchero is actually a famous spot back in Buenos Aires, and their North Beach location serves massive milanesa and gloriously thick fugazzas. This may be the worst thing you could possibly eat before sprinting for 90-ish minutes. But it’s an excellent option afterward. Messi used his unfathomable influence for good on this one. The last time we were here, shortly after Messi posted about it, there was a person in the dining room with a big calf tattoo of Messi’s face." - ryan pfeffer, mariana trabanino

"Soccer superstar Lionel Messi posted a picture of pizza from North Beach pizzeria Banchero to his Instagram stories on Friday night. Though many commenters were unimpressed with the Argentinian-style pizza (which does not have sauce), the post attracted a crowd to the restaurant, which had a line out the door on Saturday night." - Erin Russell

"Founded by immigrant Don Agustin Banchero, who arrived in Buenos Aires from Italy in 1893 and opened Banchero in 1932, this venerable pizzeria—still operating and with a location in Miami—reflects his Genoese origins rather than Neapolitan tradition. I note plain tomato pies with anchovies arranged on top like rays of sunshine, cheesy pies mired with thick slices of red plum tomato, and perhaps most interestingly the fugazza: dough rounds topped with sliced onions and cheese so onion-forward it might be dubbed an onion pie. According to Waverly Root, the flatbread is native to La Spezia and Banchero adapted it with some Neapolitan elements; he also created larger, boat-like fugazzetas filled with tomatoes, olives, ham, and tuna, hearty enough to serve a crowd." - Robert Sietsema
