The Hottest New Bars in New York City, May 2024

"Mexican cocktails are finally getting their due. New bars like Superbueno and Lolita have been putting smoky, salty drinks in the spotlight. Bar Nena is another one to watch. The West Village bar from the owners of Jajaja serves mixed Mexican drinks, like carajillos and micheladas, plus fermented beverages, like pulque and tepache. The small food menu has Mexican deviled eggs, chicharrones, and chorizo tacos." - Eater Staff

NYC’s New Restaurant Openings - New York - The Infatuation

"Hard kombucha is so last year. At Bar Nena, a Mexico City-inspired bar from the Jajaja people, you’ll find a section of low-ABV fermented beverages that includes tepache, tejuino and pulque. The West Village spot also has a full menu of interesting cocktails with ingredients like pickle hominy and jackfruit-infused tequila, as well as some (mostly vegetarian) bites." - Will Hartman, Willa Moore

Bar Nena has Tepache! After coming back from Mexico City, this is definitely inspired by it. This lively bar infuses cocktails with flavors of Mexico and also ingredients that provide health benefits. My friend and I had the pleasure of meeting Gio the head bartender and he’s outstanding. I would definitely check out this bar for great music, liquor, and staff ( Ayana so sweet!). They also offer a range of drinks from no to low and high alcohol content.

Lovely bar with incredible cocktail menu. We waited about 1 hr to get off the waitlist with no reservation on a Friday night. The bartenders were really nice and inviting! Would definitely return

my friend and I got lucky to go in, they had a standing spot in the corner (@ 6pm). one of the hosts was kind enough though to let us sit before the next res arrived. so definitely make a reservation beforehand. music & drinks 10/10

Upscale bar with chic clientele. Dress to impress because you will find very classy people. Entrance difficult to find as it is downstairs next to a Mexican restaurant but soooo worth it

Overall rating: 4.4 Price: $27 w/ tax & DOUBLE tip I went for a private event, so the downstairs was reserved just for me and the group. Even with a private event, it was surprisingly very loud. I loved the decorations and could tell it was a mezcal bar immediately. None of the menu items were speaking to me, so I ended up just getting a Paloma. Bruh. Tell me why it says I paid more, MORE than a regular cocktail bc it was a Paloma? A classic Paloma? Make that make sense. The Paloma wasn’t even that good. It tasted like soda. Not a fan. I WAS going to say, I’d like to try again when I’m by myself before writing it off. However, I just realized by looking at the receipt that I double tipped smh. The bartender did not say the tip was included when he told me the cost. That is so rude. Will not be back & do not recommend.

My boyfriend and I had an amazing time here! We went on a Saturday night with our reservation and got in with no worries. The owner was super kind and took care of us, he even gave us a free shot! Was an amazing night with great drinks, good atmosphere and amazing music. Highly recommended coming here, we definitely will be going back!

Please stop playing rancheras at midnight. No one seems to enjoy them, and it kills the energy of the room. You can tell because no one’s dancing or singing along—we’re all just standing in line awkwardly until the song changes. It’s outdated and really brings down the vibe. It’s bad for the atmosphere being very honest. Lastly, please turn on your AC!!

Yelp
Bar Nena is the new speakeasy of Jajaja in WV with a fun sexy vibe (disco ball, louder music, dark lights, and red velvet couches)- perfect for a girls night or date. I came for a girls night on Friday, and my friend had a reservation. The velvet ropes at the entrance is a bit gimmicky, but the employees working at the entrance were super nice and friendly. For the main event: drinks! We each got two- I got the Pelicula and the Mi Horchata. The Pelicula was my favorite w/ popcorn infused tequila and a little side of popcorn garnish (a tad stale lol but still cute). It tasted like a popcorn-flavored prnstar martini- delicious! The Mi Horchata is a dairy-free version of alcoholic Horchata, which was great for my dairy-allergy friend to try a sip. I will say it was a bit watery for me, didn't have that delicious creaminess I associate with Horchata. My friend got the Para Los Nubes (refreshing), and Infiel (jackfruit-infused and unique). Service was fine downstairs, but they did get a bit busy around 10 pm.

Yelp
We had a great time at Bar Nena. Walking up, the ropes feel a little gimmicky for the neighborhood and Phil the door man had to head downstairs to see if there was room for us. In fairness, we didn't have a reservation but that seemed like a strange system. We were eventually told standing room only and a few bar seats opened up almost immediately. So, with the awkward dance to get in behind us on to the good stuff. We each ordered a different cocktail and all the flavors were really thoughtful and on point. CDMX Manhattan had a nice spice to give a good twist on a classic. Ni Maíz delicious and inventive. The pulque a complete delight. I'm not sure you can really go wrong. Service was excellent, friendly and fun. I appreciated that they do not stock vodka and politely turned down a request for a vodka soda--they're doing something here. For a snack, you can't go wrong with the taquitos, but come for the drinks.

Yelp
This bar/club doesn't know what it wants to be yet. I went in expecting this to be a cocktail bar with craft drinks and high quality snacks. That was not the case. The drinks were mediocre, and the snacks were not only not good but super expensive even for WV standards, e.g. 10 wheel chips for $10, thumb-sized "empanadas" for $5 each. Call me an old woman but the music was insanely loud for a place that was half empty.

Yelp
After writing my negative review, Bar Nena contacted me to rectify the situation. After being firm in not returning, my wife and I decided to give it another try since the bar was offering to give us a credit for what we spent the first time. After several messages back and forth on Yelp and in Email- I finally agreed to receiving the credit so we can try again- That's when the line went dead and I haven't heard back. Adamant on rectifying the situation and when given a green light to do so- you disappear? Yeah- REALLY NOT GIVING ANOTHER TRY NOW

Yelp
I love this spot! The drinks are on point. My favorites were the Para las Nubes (who doesn't love a plant-based milk punch?) and the Infiel (where else can you find a jackfruit infused tequila cocktail?). The food is delicious - perfect light bites to pair along with the drinks. Our server Keren walked us through the menu and gave great recommendations. The music is always great and the dark lighting creates a super romantic vibe that is awesome for a date. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Great spot to grab crafted cocktails and bites in WV! Vibes are immaculate. Love this spot for a date night or girls night out.

Yelp
We had an amazing time celebrating my best friend's joint bachelor/bachelorette party this past weekend at Bar Nena! We were a group of 12 and they seated us in our own private section that featured a spacious red velvet couch great for pictures! Since we were a large group it was a required minimum spend of $100 per person on food and drinks. Pricing was reasonable and a steal considering we're in NYC. We really enjoyed the empanadas, taquitos and fruit skewers they were all so delicious and my spicy margarita was perfection. Fee was the manager who was super helpful in booking the venue for us and was even there the night of the bachelorette to ensure everything went smoothly! She even let us bring small decorations to decorate the table for our bride and groom. Gabriela was our waitress and she was so sweet, quick and professional. The bride and groom as well as their bridal party were more than impressed with Bar Nena and we can't wait to return in the near future.

Yelp
What an amazing time I had, I read some bad reviews about this place but wanted to give it a shot. The music on my visit was on point as were the cocktails. The carajito being my favorite! I found the list interesting and very unique. The bartender was extremely nice and lighting was great. I would definitely be back to try a few of the other drinks, the horchata jumped out at me as did the corn one. The popcorn one was super unique. I definitely liked how hidden away it was. It felt like we were somewhere else, not in NY, thats for certain! A must try.

Yelp
Walked in without a res right when it opened. The cocktails are excellent. I am unsure what the space turns into later at night, but the venue is beautiful. I would definitely enjoy this as a chill cocktail bar with excellent drinks over a dance atmosphere. My drink was taking too long to make, so they actually ended up sending over some complimentary plum mezcal shots, which were simply the best shots I've ever had. Love bar nena

Yelp
Had the most amazing time on my date! He surprised me with a reservation to this hidden gem. We were promptly seated and then greeted and the menu was explained by the server. The cocktails we had were awesome! One had some sort of clarified coconut that we loved!!! The whole place was dark and sexy and perfect spot for our night. Music was also on point and kept us happy as we tried the different drinks. Super creative space and fun vibes all around. When the disco ball was turned on it made my night. I'll be back. Shoutout to the bartender who also sent us a plum mezcal for our anniversary toast!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this cocktail bar. I am a huge fan of Jajaja and was very excited to check out this new spot by the same owners. Unfortunately, last night was a horrible experience due to the bouncer. My friend warned me that previously when she went that the bouncer treated them oddly, so I was already expecting this to an extent... I arrived with two other girls; the bar was quite empty, lots of space & seating available. My husband and his friend arrived after us about 30 minutes later & were not let in by the bouncer. Our waitress told us that it was no problem and that she would talk to the bouncer - she proceeds to go out and tell him that they can come in, however, when she walked away the bouncer told them they still could not come in (for an unclear reason?). We then go outside to ask the bouncer ourselves (since it was so empty!) and the bouncer was extremely rude and said no. Because of this, we decided to leave - the waitress seemed confused why the guys were not let in when we paid our bill. There needs to better communication between the inside management and the door. The bouncer was trying to create an exclusive vibe for absolutely no reason at an empty, brand new bar. In my 8+ years of living in West Village, I have never been treated like this. Very strange and unpleasant experience, with an extremely rude bouncer. The bar inside is a fun vibe - good cocktails (pricey), however, I will not be back.
