The Hottest New Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland, February 2025

"The subterranean Alberta wine bar known as Les Caves is, as of August, Bar Nina, a dimly lit hideaway for natural or fortified and aromatized wines that also has a small, curated menu of snacks and plates to soak up the pours — think homemade chicken liver mousse, havarti-cheddar grilled cheeses, and Spanish conservas like piquillo peppers stuffed with tuna. Cheese, jams, and Marcona almonds are available to graze on, too." - Paolo Bicchieri

The Best Wine Bars in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"What was once Les Caves — NE Alberta’s intimate, subterranean wine bar — is now Bar Nina. With former co-owner Jeff Vejr stepping away to focus on other projects, co-owners Ksenija Kostic House and John House of Ovum Wines have fully taken over the joint, keeping beloved touches like the fun “mystery pour” option and the cult-favorite grilled cheese sandwich while tweaking the wine list and adding new snacky food options like Spanish sausages. Ovum’s signature and summery muscat, gewurztraminer, and riesling mash-up Big Salt and its sister wines are served outdoors, as they should be, at the seasonal Big Salt Bar in the open-air former Les Clos space. The indoor wine bar and tasting room area pours Ovum’s small-production Oregon whites, Spanish and Portuguese imports from La Luz Selections, and enticing finds across the wine-world spectrum, including Georgian oranges and French bubbles." - Zoe Baillargeon

Portland’s Best Romantic Restaurants and Bars for Date Night | Eater Portland

"Alberta’s subterranean wine bar is the ideal secluded spot for couples. There isn’t a bad seat in the house when drinking cool, off-the-beaten-track wines found here. Winemakers/owners John House and Ksenija Kostic pour small-production wines from old-world regions, with an emphasis on Germanic white-grape varieties out of Oregon wine countries from their label Ovum. In summer months and during pop-ups, guests can also make their way upstairs toward the open-air Big Salt Bar, which features the namesake label’s more experimental bottles." - Katrina Yentch

The Best Underground Bars in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Slink down the small alley off Northeast Alberta to discover a wine lover’s Shangri-La in Bar Nina (formerly Les Caves) — and its above-ground sister bar Big Salt Bar. The intimate underground space is an excellent date night venue: quiet, warmly lit, and impeccably furnished. A cozy raised alcove offers an even more private spot to the physically dexterous. The bartenders love to talk wine, and the wine list here is curated with care, with a particular passion for Southern and Eastern European wines. The small kitchen offers classic bar snacks and an unbeatable grilled cheeses." - Nathan Williams

Portland, Oregon’s Best Cozy Restaurants and Bars | Eater Portland

"The coziest place to drink vermouth in Portland is likely the little cave carved into the wall at this subterranean wine bar. Tucked off Alberta Street down a nondescript alley, the winemaker-owned Bar Nina, formerly known as Les Caves, often has a cool, distinctive list of glass pours, vermouths, and grilled cheese, housed at candle-lit tables or bar seats; however, those dextrous enough to climb into the nook should reserve it, so they can cuddle up on the couch and share a bottle of Khikhvi." - Carrie Uffindell

I was excited to share this cute space with my boyfriend after having been once before with some girlfriends. But was unfortunately met with a rude, pompous server (the only one there) immediately upon arrival. We were the only patrons in the bar the entire time we were there. We asked to sit in the cave because again, not another patron. And was told there was a reservation for the cave in 40 minute. We told him we would only be there for 20 minute because we had a dinner reservation to get to and he scoffed and continued to serve up the most attitude I’ve ever gotten at an establishment. Already feeling belittled by the server, I ask for him to run over the flavor profiles of the orange and red wines and he says there’s too many to go over all of them (there are literally 6 on the menu in total). And eventually he goes over 2 options as if I’m annoying him with my presence. To make matters worse, there was another employee who looks like the owner of the bar, right next to him during the whole encounter and doesn’t say anything. We felt unwelcome and uncomfortable the entire time. Although the wine itself was good, I would be very hesitant to ever recommend this place to anyone unless you want to leave feeling upset. They need to get rid of this server.

Came here to celebrate my friends recent promotion. Place is very cozy and eclectic in a great way. Lovely wine selection, plenty of options without being overwhelming. Champagne list was great and reasonably priced. Staff was lovely. Very friendly and welcoming.Kept our champagne chilled for us and made sure our glasses were never empty. Will definitely be back!

As a semi-frequent patron of Les Caves, I felt slightly apprehensive when I saw the name change, but I couldn't pass up an opportunity to give it a shot. As a whole, the business is pretty much the same besides one or two new faces, minor decor changes, a small adjustment of ownership, and a few more snack options. The wine selection is wonderful, ranging from affordable mystery pours to exquisite aged bottles. In addition to the great wine, Nathan and Pierre will make you feel like family with their unmatched hospitality. They make this a special place, no matter the name the business operates under.

It's a very cozy, stylish place with a great variety of drinks. The staff is very friendly and fun. We didn't have any food, so I cannot comment on that.

As a returning patron, I was eager to share Bar Nina with friends from out of town, given my fond memories of its earlier iteration as Les Caves: A Winery Bar. Unfortunately, our evening was overshadowed by one server’s pompous and condescending demeanor, which ruined the occasion. Rather than fostering an atmosphere of inclusion and discovery, this individual chose to patronize my friends, dismissing their questions and opinions with a sneering attitude. What was most egregious, however, was his apparent lack of fundamental wine knowledge. He confidently contradicted well-known attributes of a common wine varietal, making statements so incorrect they bordered on embarrassing. When politely questioned, he doubled down with hostility, creating an awkward and uncomfortable environment for our group. As individuals who appreciate and regularly enjoy exploring wine, we were appalled by the arrogance and unprofessionalism on display. We left feeling disrespected and disinclined to return. For a bar positioning itself as a haven for wine enthusiasts, this was a glaring failure. Staff education and customer interaction should be held to much higher standards.

Love this spot. It’s so unique, cozy, and dark being situated in a basement/cave. Great spot for a low key night with friends or a date. The wine selection is nice, good snacks (recommend the toasted almonds), and service is solid. Friendly team. Consider making a reservation, as it is pretty small. On Resy, the “lounge” is the basement/cave portion. We went here once before with it was Les Caves. It was very cool then, too, and I think basically the same. I’m pretty sure it’s under the same ownership, just with a new name.

Sat outside only to find out there were no food options. Moved inside and was completely ignored. Terrible service. Tried to get attention several times. I almost walked out positive they wouldn't even notice I'd gone without paying because they were too busy with other customers and bussing tables. The chairs were too low for the bench so I was eye level with my plate. I used to love this place and sad that it's off my list.
