On the Grid : Bar Notre-Dame-Des-Quilles

"There are many ways to have fun at Bar NDQ. Wether mini-bowling, cocktails, burritos, or Ru Paul's Drag Race are your thing, all are present in this hodge-podge dive refuge. Frequent DJ nights of Funk, Goth, and Lipster Modern Karaoke are sure to keep you warm through Montreal's 6 months of winter. The burritos are prepared by Velo Burrito, and yes, they deliver!" - Dynamo

Montreal’s Best Bars for Crying in Public | Eater Montreal

"If you’re queer and have spent more than 72 hours in Montreal, chances are you already have cried in this bar. Remember that time that you walked in to find your ex on a date with your roommate’s ex’s ex and immediately got jealous of how cute they looked in their matching chokers? That was a rough night. But the cheap cocktails, great pizza, and lovely staff made up for it." - Megan Jones

Montreal’s Best LGBTQ Bars and Hangouts | Eater Montreal

"In its early days, NDQ was the de-facto bar for queer women in Montreal; its clientele is pretty broad nowadays, with its cheap drinks and bowling alley drawing all sorts. But the queer vibes are still there, especially at their weekend dance parties, special events such as LSD (Lesbian Speed Dating), and at Sunday night karaoke staple Lipster." - Tim Forster

Cheap Cocktails in Montreal: Where to Drink Up | Eater Montreal

"NDQ’s $6 cocktails include the perpetually popular whiskey ginger, plus the Sacré Coeur (vodka, cherry syrup, ginger beer), a Moscow mule, and a Tom Collins. There’s also seven more cocktails, from a mojito to a tequila sunrise, for $7.50. That (plus its new in-house pizza joint, Bouquet) making this Beaubien bar-cum-bowling alley a cheap cocktail mainstay." - Heather Vandenengel

Google
Really cool queer bar with Karaoke. Apparently Adele is big in MTL? Haha. My friends and I felt safe here. Was super fun to experience a slice of the city like this when passing through!

Google
The best iconic queer bar in Montréal! The bartenders give just the right amount of sass, as well as being helpful and accommodating. amazing, quality cocktails. Always eclectic crowd. Best dive bar in little italy for a solid cocktail and all your favorite people.

Google
nice place, however some renovations are really needed+we should be able to pay by card, cash only is ridiculous

This bar is very safe for young, female travelers. During their Sunday, karaoke night, there were lots of young people and the vibe was just right. I also like the fact that it wasn’t just men or women. You had a good mix and it was very diverse. Bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. I’m from the States and I have never had a bar experience this pleasant. My only complaint is they probably need to move away from the cash only thing.

Google
The manager bartender very good but slightly slow service. The guy with glasses and black hair newbie is Terrible and Dishonest. After the manager told to take off the handle of new England beer. I got st ambroise ipa..he tried to charge me 18$ instead of 16$. There is a price difference..I got 2 and tried to tell me it's the same price. Price listed on the wall. He said talk to his manager, I said yes but before I could he told the manager that I didn't like his service. I cut him off and told the manager he tried charging me 18$ instead of 16. The manager gave me the beers for free and told newbie he was wrong. Earlier I bought a drink was supposed to cost 9$, he charged me 11$. Also, another customer was waiting a longtime at the bar and newbie talked to her but never got her order. I told the manager that she hasn't been served yet. The drag show et dance party was super FUN!

First time enjoying this establishment. I went for Karaoke Sunday, and the crowd was just amazing. Very queer friendly, which is a big plus in my books. Prices were reasonable for what you received. The staff was outstanding in their service and their friendliness. If you want a good night with chill people, I would definitely recommend you spend your Sunday night here!

Google
This bar has a welcoming atmosphere and stellar cocktails--my drink had basil and we watched the bartender pluck fresh basil right from the plant! I also appreciated that they had non-alcoholic options for my partner who doesn't drink.

Really yummy pizza, reasonable prices. Cool vibe, low key, not pretentious and the bowling lane (only 2 lanes) is a good conversation piece. It’s loud when people play but it’s really cool, and there’s another section away from the lanes too. The bathroom is cool.

Yelp
It's been like 4 years so I'm due for yet another review update for one of my favourite Montreal bars, not because there's a huge amount of new info - although Bouquet Pizza which does the food here now is open for pickup through the front window so that's awesome news!!! But mostly I'm updating to send them love and to bump this low key perfect community hub of excellent inexpensive pints and whiskey and friendship and dance parties and karaoke up in your Yelp feed, so you know where to go sit on the patio and savour life when that becomes a possibility yet again.

Yelp
This is an OK pub. The beers are realitvly cheap (5.50$ per pint) but the selection is not amazing (standard Montreal pub selection). Also they dont serve food which usually is fine if you have a cool burito or other fast food place next door but not here. So you cant buy food and there is nothing around :( What is cool about this place is the wooden bowling lines that you can play for free. A nice attraction but not attractive enough that I will revisit this place

Yelp
What a fantastic little gem of a place ! Very quirky and unique ambiance. My parter and I were looking for a friendly LBGTQ place and so we stumbled here. Great atmosphere and great prices :) Very hipster crowd with a homemade bowling alley look alike section. Don't even get me started on the Pizza! Def gave NYC a run for its money .Will definitely be back! Go visit Jeffrey at the bar and make sure to grab you a pizza from Andrew. Very hospitable crew . Highly recommend

Yelp
An awesome dive bar with cheap drinks, burritos, and miniature bowling? Sign me up. This bar is great. The vibe is perfect, the people are friendly, and the drinks won't set you back anymore than $5 or so. It's apparently a lesbian bar, but I hate labels. It's just a great bar, period. Any and everyone is welcome. Apparently they do a pretty mean karaoke night where the duckpin bowling lanes become a massive stage. I'll have to time my next trip a little better so I can be sure to show Quebec what I've got.

Yelp
Another dive I visited in Montreal. My idea of a good dive bar, away from home, is good beer and good conversations, with the bartenders and the locals. This place had it all. The two bartenders here were very cool (sadly I don't recall their names). In addition to beer, I tried their Moscow Mule and Whiskey Ginger. Both had a spicy kick to it which I really liked. I also met some locals with whom I hung out after in a Park till 5am in the morning. All in all a great night.
google avatar

Peter D.

Yelp
Hypothetical for you: What would you say if one of your friends was all, "Let's go in here! It's the best lesbian bar in Montreal, and they've got duckpin bowling and $5 shots of Jamo"? If you know what's good for you, you'd say, "Sold."

Yelp
Cool ass bar with a great cocktail list. The atmosphere is divey with an elevated drink list. Go into the side room for some mini bowling. We waited our turn and then jumped on when the two lanes opened up. It's fun, but a pain in the ass setting up the pins every time... I know, I'm a lazy American. Seriously though, I would pay someone to set those things up for me. Moved back into the bar afterward and hung out there for a bit. The staff were funny and the place had a very welcoming vibe.

Yelp
Now that I'm sober enough to write a review, here's what I remember. My one pet peeve about most bars is how hypermasculine they can be, full of bros and testosterone and rah rah. This place, thankfully, is the opposite of that. Norte Dame Des Quilles is a queer/trans-friendly, bro-free piece of heaven. It has cute decor and nice tunes, complete with an altar and graffiti-clad restrooms. The drinks are solid, and you can enjoy them without creepy male aggression or yuppie pretentiousness. We were mostly at the bar (super sweet bartender) but there was a whole other side of the location that had a couple small bowling lanes. For a Friday night they didn't seem super busy which was actually nice to not have to fish through crowds of people. The one drawback was that I thought they had food options (according to previous reviews) but that wasn't the case (at least for this night). But it wasn't the end of the world and there were plenty of other food options in the neighborhood anyways. I would definitely come back here again!

Yelp
Wherever I am in the world, this is the kind of joint that makes me feel at home. A little bit sticky, cheap drinks, solid snack options and a glorious gimmick for when drunks get bored. In this case, duck bowling! These are the magic ingredients to a rad local in my (not so) humble opinion, and NDQ just fucking nails it. I've been here twice. Once I danced like a fool, downed shots and bowled like a champ. The second time, I was sick and drank ginger ale, but the company and atmosphere were so worth it, I happily dragged my butt out. Long live the lovable dive bar!

Yelp
Let's play bowling! Great happy hour deals, fun bar staff. It's a totally unpretentious crowd so it's a nice spot for a casual neighbourhood drink. The kitchen closed recently so I'm curious to see what food option opens there next. Check out Karaoke night on Sunday's if that's your thing.

Rc L.

Yelp
Excellent pizza. Takes forever to come out but worth the wait. Stick to beer here. Pretty out of the way but will be back to check out karaoke night. Not much interaction between patrons on a Friday night but maybe Sunday vibes are better.

Yelp
Incredible! The vibe here is the best. Completely safe and chill. Everyone is just hanging and having a good time. The sangria was so good and decently priced. The potato rosemary pizza was amazing (and that means a lot since I'm from NY) ! A dope venue. A must go.

Yelp
If it were possible to scoop up an entire establishment (including it's physical space, the people who work there, the people who hang out there, the vibe/atmosphere, the dancing, the karaoke... everything about the place, really) hide it my very large purse, and smuggle it through customs... I would totally do it. I've never wanted to steal a business out of a city and bring it to my own like I do with Notre Dame Des Quilles! I know it's touted as one of the best lesbian bars in town, but I found it to be both GLBTS and hipster-friendly. It's also considered a dive bar - historically, a place I try and avoid. One of the reasons why I don't tend to go to anything categorized as a "dive bar" is because I understand there will be a serious level of exclusivity involved. Regulars will wonder who I am and why I'm there; NDQ is the exception to that rule. Everyone (both staff and customers) was SOOOOO friendly, and SOOOO accepting, and SOOOOO nonjudgmental, and SOOOOOO laid back... I couldn't get over it. Folks were singing karaoke very, very badly yet people were genuinely cheering them on, or singing along in a show of solidarity, or being back up dancers during performances. I've honestly never seen anything so supportive in my life (it was also the ONLY time in my existence that I actually felt comfortable enough to attempt karaoke... [un]fortunately my name never got called!). For the few hours we were there, I didn't feel like I was in a room with strangers insecurely sizing up everyone around them, but of awesome individuals who wanted to skip past my whole life story just so that we could get to the heart of our new relationship: being friends (you can't laugh at me for that corny statement because NDQ is a No Judgment Zone; so there!). The beers were big and cold, the lighting was dark and moody, and I couldn't have been happier to find myself there. Definitely one of my new favorite bars in the world!

Yelp
DOPE queer dive bar. Planned a night bar-hopping around the area and ended up stumbling upon some good ol' fashioned queereoke. Solid, cheap drinks and a good crowd...needless to say, we never made it to bar #2.

Yelp
Spacious and somewhat institutional-feeling (as in, linoleum floors and battered diner furniture) dive bar with plenty of character and very reasonably priced drinks. Although located in Petit Patrie / Little Italy, it's definitely a Mile-Endois kind of place. Mellow 20s to 30s crowd with tats and bad posture. And two bowling lanes (don't get too excited: you have to set your own pins), which seem like a great idea until someone else starts bowling. No TV, which is a huge plus. And the food is excellent for what it is and very reasonably priced. Seriously, whichever variation of their roast beef sandwich is on the menu when you go is probably worth the price of admission. Although this place serves liquor, you should probably avoid any cocktail more complicated than a gin and tonic or Jack and Coke. They're not mixologists here--they pull beers and pour shots. I like this bar a lot, though the ambiance leaves a bit to be desired. If inexpensive drinks and a good crowd are your things (again, you'll only think the bowling thing is cool the first time you go), you should not overlook this place.

Yelp
well first off...disclaimer...I'm kind of a fan of dive bars!...now with that out of the way I checked out NDQ last night with a friend and got to say I thoroughly dug the vibe. Definitely a bit low-budget on the decor and pretty high on atmosphere...youngish mid twenties to early thirties crowd...most men of the bearded or november mo type and girls with toques and tats... even saw a few peeps in the back break out the pad and pencils and have some really nice drawing sessions... drinks are cheap but the bathrooms leave much to be desired (either a pipe was broken or people really can't aim!).... Overall, would go back....

Yelp
A fun place for either a date or drinks with friends. Drinks are very reasonably priced, and the food is surprisingly good given what you'd otherwise expect given the price of the drinks. It's also fun to roll a couple games of bowling -- although having to set up the pins yourself wears thin after a few sets ;)

Yelp
One of my favorite local bars in Montreal! It's a fun, divey atmosphere that caters to all crowds. The space itself is a bit quirky with indoor bowling lanes and mix matched decor. The drinks are strong and cheap! I'll come back here on every trip I take to Montreal. Highly recommend.

Monica I.

Yelp
LOVE this place. Looks like someone took some chairs and tables from a dumpster and put them in a room but the vibe and ambience is relaxed and fun. Service was always friendly. Glad I don't live in Montreal because I would live here if I did and that would be bad for my wallet and liver. Cash only.

Yelp
Monday night after work and I met up with the always fun and lovely Ms. Risa D. for some mac & cheese, 4$ pints and bowling: best...Monday...ever...We were lucky enough to have Frannie as our server and she had me cracking up the entire time in this turquoise-walled, amazing dive bar. The music was all chosen by our server and covered everything from Beastie Boys to Gramatik to Jean Leloup. I love the cute little 2 lanes for bowling, the big picture windows looking onto the street and hellooooo, jalapeno chutney on the mac & cheese? Yes please! The location is close to the Metro and like Risa said, it's cash only.

Corey D.

Yelp
I've been three times, I think that makes me a regular. Once for drinks. Once for dancing. Once for karaoke. Each time was more magical than the one before! It can get crowded, it can get loud, but both add to the charm of the joint! And seriously, where else in Montreal, maybe the WORLD can you belt out Billy Joel on a duckpin bowling lane?
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
great drinks great tunes and duckpins yessss they have a distroboto zine machine too don't miss that!

Yelp
Awesome little chill bar on Beaubien. I've only popped in for after show parties but always had an awesome time.
google avatar

Svend E.

Yelp
From the ambiance to music and prices, almost everything here was great. Except: The drinks were mixed terribly. Don't know if it was just these two particular bartenders the Sat night I was there, but they didn't know how to mix drinks at all; they'd erratically mix up signature cocktails within 20-30 seconds, sometimes by stirring them, and the proportions and taste were all off. One would expect better at such a popular bar. Everything was great, but-- please, learn how to mix drinks.

Yelp
I heard there was a bar in Monty that was ALSO a bowling alley so I had to check out this place! I love sports (is bowling a sport?) and anyone who has read my reviews knows that I heart beer, too. So, it wasn't tough to get me to agree to check out the bowling shenanigans at this place. However, upon arriving we quickly discovered that bowling was out and karaoke was...in? Yes yes, what filled the lanes were not bowling balls and pins, but people of all shapes and sizes belting out their favorite tunes. Hello! Amazing. Do I karaoke? No. Even my speaking voice is awful. But, do I enjoy hearing others bust out lyrics at the top of their lungs? Uh, does James Brown get down? Now, the beer wasn't as cheap as I heard it was, but I think it did the trick...I mean, people started sounding better and better as the night went on...AND, I started shaking my booty to the amazingly awful (oxymorons are not used enough) tunes. I'm guessing the next time I return to Notre Dame Des Quilles it will be on a bowling night so that I can show off the bowling skills that I don't have. But hey, at least I won't have to sing.
