Bar Pez - Review - Portobello - Dublin - The Infatuation

"Bar Pez is an Irish-Spanish tapas restaurant where seduction comes in the form of a candlelit piece of deep-fried scallop toast. It’s a moodily-lit, bottle-and-a-few-croquettes kind of place. That said, there are plenty of couples who bed in for the long haul. You can sit at a table, but opt to sit at the bar closest to the sommelier or the chef. Talk wine and eat a crab sandwich, but if you’re after something heftier, the duck heart ragu with a slice of sourdough is a rich, gout-enthused end to an evening. photo credit: Dena Shearer photo credit: Dena Shearer photo credit: Dena Shearer Pause Unmute" - Jake Missing

Our last night in Ireland, with no dinner plans. The Fish House was near our hotel, but it was fully booked. Their website said to try their sister restaurant, Bar Pez. What a lucky find! The service was first rate, the wine was perfect, and every plate set before us was a treat—including the most amazing oysters I've ever had. The turbot was also a stand-out. My wife and I were very glad to have found this place.

An excellent meal, with great food and wine. Great execution on all the components of each dish and a great wine list to follow. Highlights were the rarebit toast, cheese and leek croquet with black garlic aioli, beef tongue sandwhich and crab sandwich. Honestly everything I tried was delicious.

Was really looking forward to try Bar Pez as I had heard good things. Unfortunately, we left a bit disappointed. We spent 72€ per couple (without alcohol) but we didn’t feel like it was worth what we had. They take bookings at 8:45PM but then as soon as you sit down they basically tell you that the kitchen is about to close… I think it closes too early on Fridays and Saturdays and late bookings are not a good idea. We basically got kicked out at 10PM when they opened the lights. 1 hour and 15 minutes for a dinner with friends is not a long time. Food was good but honestly too pricy. One small croqueta for 5 euros is kind of insane. My beef tartare had more peas than meat and the rarebit was mostly bread. The dessert however was fantastic, I must give them that! Deconstructed Basque cheesecake with strawberries, a beauty. Overall not bad but also not great. Kind of on the fence here to be honest. Maybe go and see for yourself would be my advice.

Our favourite meal in Dublin. This is the place to go for seasonal small plates using the best local ingredients and a well curated wine list. A reservation is a must on weekends 😄

I had the most extraordinary experience at Bar Pez — one that I’ll remember for a long time. From start to finish, everything was impeccable. The food was absolutely outstanding: each dish was perfectly balanced, creative, and full of flavor. The wine list was equally impressive, thoughtfully curated with bottles that elevated the entire meal and paired beautifully with the chef’s dishes. The service deserves special mention — warm, attentive, and professional without ever being intrusive. The chef’s passion truly came through in every bite, and it was clear how much care went into creating such a memorable dining experience. What stood out most, however, was the genuine kindness and thoughtfulness of the team. We were dining with a friend who has severe allergies, and they handled everything with such thoroughness and care. From carefully explaining menu options to making adjustments without hesitation, they went above and beyond to ensure that everyone at the table felt completely at ease. It’s rare to find a place that delivers on every level — food, wine, service, atmosphere — while also showing such authentic hospitality. Bar Pez is a true gem, and I can’t wait to return.

Google
A real gem in Dublin, Bar Pez is a small wine bar and tapas restaurant with a genuine Basque vibe. We loved all our small plates, the crab toasted sandwich being a highlight but everything was flavour packed and great fun to try. The wine list is extensive but somewhat tricky to navigate as it's organised by terroir. All in all, a wonderful experience and a place not to be missed.

This is a really pleasant place. Even more than the food (which tasted great), I loved the atmosphere, which truly reminds you of a place in Spain. And it was not as loud as many other places in Dublin. The staff is very knowledgeable about the menu and the great selection of wine and they're very friendly. The tapas are made of fresh and great quality Irish ingredients. The potatoes were unreal, my favourite dish! I enjoyed everything else as well. I'll be back to try the rest of the menu and the relaxing atmosphere again.

So unique, you don’t find a place like this in Dublin . Small but super well located and food is unreal … Should we start talking about Irish tapas ? I think we should We tried almost everything in the menu and our favourite on top were the ceviche , then the croquettes and the crab tosties Is not cheap but it worth it , Definitely coming back and recommending to all the friends

Yelp
Food was amazing. The initial appetizers were olives, oysters, and rarebit. The flavors of the rarebit were amazing. Oysters tastes like just pulled from the water. Fresh and crisp. The crab was so light, fresh, and tasty. Asparagus salad was good, light, amazing RICOTTA. The turbo was prepared perform ctly, so creamy and light with a crispy skin. It melts din your mouth. The cheesecake was amazing to dessert. The wine list is eclectic and surprisingly large. The room was a little small but cozy. Service was excellent. I recommend a try if you like the small menu with interesting tastes and flavors.

Yelp
On my first night in Dublin, I was excited to try Bar Pez. I looked at their website online and saw that they appeared to have bar seating and a yummy seasonal menu with lots of small plates. I arrived around 8pm on a Saturday for dinner. Being by myself, I did not think I'd need a reservation. I thought the bar seating was first come first serve and I love sitting at a bar. In fact, looking at their website, there was no indication that reservations were required or that they were even highly encouraged. There was also no indication that each table had time limits for dining either. But upon arriving, I was quickly told that I would not be able to eat there and the best they could do was offer me a glass of wine in the standing room section I asked if I could be put on a waitlist but there was no option to do so. Since it was my first time in Dublin, I really didn't expect it to be such a bother to arrive somewhere, as a party of one, with no reservation. I also didn't realize that Dublin is such an early dinner type of town. 8pm seemed to be their last seating of the night. Fortunately, some very kind strangers offered me a seat at their table and allowed me to devour some food during the last 15 minutes of their reservation. The food and wine was solid, based on the little I had time to try, but I'm afraid much of the experience was overshadowed by the blunder in communication about reservations which ultimately left me feeling unwelcome. If you are planning to check this place out, I highly recommend grabbing a reservation even if you are a party of one. I would also recommend that the restaurant does a better job of communicating that reservations are required, that walks-in are near impossible to accommodate, and that they don't offer a waitlist option upon arrival. This would've allowed me to have a much better experience.

Yelp
Food was good, if on the pricey side. Was let down on the service, felt the staff were rude with some of the comments they made.
