"December 23 was the last day of service at Brendan McGill’s Bar Solea. McGill said in a press release that he hopes that this will be a temporary closure and implied the reason was that downtown foot traffic and office occupancy rates were too low to support the pizzeria and bar. “We look forward to coming out of hibernation once folks decide to return to the office in our part of downtown Seattle,” he said." - Meg van Huygen

"Brendan McGill’s Bar Solea, a downtown pizza-focused Italian restaurant, opened just over a year ago, and now it’s closing — at least for now. “We’re temporarily turning off the lights,” McGill, who owns Hitchcock Restaurant Group, said in a press release. “We look forward to coming out of hibernation once folks decide to return to the office in our part of downtown Seattle.” The last day of service will be December 23. Downtown’s recovery from pandemic lockdowns has been a closely watched story this year, and the latest indicators show that only about half of downtown office workers have returned to their desks." - Harry Cheadle

"Bar Solea is a trattoria opened by Seattle restaurateur and chef Brendan McGill, in the former space of Bar Taglio on 1st Avenue in Downtown Seattle. It serves neo-Neapolitan pizza, antipasti, gelato, and roasted meat, seafood, and vegetables. The restaurant aims to be a neighborhood spot for locals while attracting diners from other parts of town with its exciting menu based on classic Italian flavors with creative PNW twists. The pizza features local whole-grain flour for a crispier crust and toppings include classic Italian ingredients and seasonal PNW additions. The menu also includes antipasti and forno options like roasted rockfish and locally raised rabbit dish. The beverage menu, curated by Tony Lombardi, features Italian wines, spritzes, amaros, vermouths, house-made gelato, and espresso drinks." - Jade Yamazaki Stewart

I am convinced this is the best Neapolitan pizza restaurant in the entire city. Amazing crust, delicious perfect sauce bursting with flavor, and a great breadth of toppings. We got the Brie and Speck pizza, and I don't think I've seen another place around that has speck on the menu. It was awesome! Their contorno was great too, very flavorful, and exceeded expectations. For dessert we were pleasantly surprised to learn that they offered olive oil cake as my wife loves olive oil cake and it's not so easy to find. I'm not as big a fan, but their olive oil cake with honey mascarpone and raspberry coulis was so good, I'm reconsidering my opinion on it altogether. Vibe was very elegant and the bar looked like they had some great options. It was a weeknight, so I had a non-alcoholic cocktail which was very good, herbal with a balanced sweetness. I definitely recommend checking Bar Solea out, it's one of my new favorite places and I'm excited to go back and taste everything else they have. I know some people get upset about service charges, so if that sort of thing bothers you, be aware they do have a 20% automatic charge.

Food is good and worth a try. The location is north of Pioneer Square. The pizzas are well done and definitely the star of the restaurant. The starters are good and I would suggest the meatballs. The atmosphere has a really cool vibe as a French bistro, overall worth a try if you are in the area.

My best friend took me here for their pizza. They have the best pizza here. Loved the margarita pizza. They have happy hour menu. Highly recommend to try their pizzas!! The cocktails look great as well. Great service! Definitely will come back again!

Had a great experience here during the soft opening last week. The DOB Margherita pizza was really good. They have a great tomato sauce. The mushroom pizza and Buratta salad were great too. Definitely would reorder these. The Affogato was a little bitter and small for me so I do wish they introduce more deserts in the future.

I love everything about this place! The food is so delicious and so flavorful. My favorites were the burrata, arancini, and prosciutto and arugula pizza!! Everything is so fresh. Great cocktails too. Very friendly service and nice atmosphere.

This place truly deserves 5 stars. The pizza here is absolutely delicious! The crust is to die for, fluffy and crunchy at the same time. The pesto pizza with potato was a standout. My favorite Neopolitan-style pizza in Seattle.

We loved our dinner at Bar Solea on a Friday night! Everything was delicious, from the antipasto misto to the pizza and panna cotta for dessert, we loved it all! The waiter was so friendly and even offered us some free dessert wine. We highly recommend and will be back :)

Google
The food was amazing! Our group got a variety of pizzas and we absolutely devoured them. Other highlights included the gnocchi al pesto (so delicious!) and the polpettine. The staff were friendly and the cocktails were also delicious. I highly recommend!

Yelp
If you've never tried this place or Bruciato in Bainbridge, do yourself a favor & go to either!!! By far the best pizza I've had in Seattle. Creative flavors like Carbonara and Datteri (pizza with dates & prosciutto), amazingly executed, and the perfect crust to go with this thin pizza. Ambiance was 7/10 just because it was a Friday night and it wasn't that busy, but I don't know what those people were doing because they should've been here, eating this pizza!

Yelp
We were so excited to try the latest offering from James Beard nominated Chef Brendon McGill. It did not disappoint. The polpette was very flavorful and the risotto was creamy and delicious but the star for me was the pizza. The marinara sauce is the best I've had in Seattle. I mentioned this to our server and he said they import their tomatoes from Naples! It was a school night so we were short on time and were grateful for your quick and polite service. We will be going back!

Yelp
Just discovered this place - I was pleasantly surprised. I went in on a Thursday night & it was much slower than I anticipated & was also very surprised by that. I figure with a place with great atmosphere, great service & great food, it would be packed!! Definitely a hidden gem!! Go fill their tables!

Yelp
I came here with some coworkers a few weeks ago after work to grab some drinks and food. The place is only open at dinner time so don't stop by here for lunch. It got pretty busy in there so I would recommend making a reservation if you're a bigger group. We ordered a variety of cocktails, some apps and a few pizzas. I got the cocktail with strawberry in it. It was fine but came in a tiny glass so it was kind of overpriced (like everything else here). We got the olives and focaccia with extra focaccia on the side and a charcuterie board to start. All of this was fine but nothing really stood out. The focaccia came with two different types - a more traditional one and some with tomato sauce on it. It was pretty tasty so I recommend getting some. We got a few different pizzas, including the margarita, carbonara, one with prosciutto, and one with Brie on it. I only tried a slice of the margarita and one of the carbonara. They were both really tasty but extremely greasy. They also don't come cut and instead come with a pair of scissors which wasn't the easiest thing to cut them with. I wish they gave the option to get them presliced, especially if you're there with a group and sharing pizzas. It would have made it much easier. Service was friendly and attentive, so no complaints there. It's worth stopping here if you're in the area and looking for pretty good pizza, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.

Yelp
Very cute European brasserie vibes and excellent service but the food was unfortunately not as good as I'd hoped. I had the caesar salad and my friend had the citrus salad, and both salads were fresh and good, with big portions. Unfortunately, my friend's branzino was undercooked and my pizza was just weird - it was very soggy and soft in the middle which made it unappetizing and difficult to eat.

Yelp
There is an upscale feel to this place but still feels casual and the staff are really nice. My friend and I sat at the bar and got some pizza and drinks. The procuitto pizza was really good and drinks were excellent. They even gave us a little bit of free prosecco after dinner. We had a great time!

Yelp
Have walked by for years and finally stopped in for dinner. Fine ambiance and service. Had a kale ceaser salad which was a bit tough but the dressing was good. They do wood fired pizza which is good but ours tasted burned despite asking for it not to be overcooked. Eggplant parmigiana was well done. Close to $100 with the gratuity included so despite hoping to add a great place to our rotation will be back at Luigi's for Italian in the square.

Yelp
Great Neapolitan-ish style Italian pizza place that's brand new in the space. Lots of locally sourced and thoughtful ingredients. Creative and delicious cocktail menu, all paired with attentive staff and a great ambiance + vibe. Inside has a cozy mid century feel that makes you want to hang out for an extra drink or two. Great addition to the neighborhood. I'll be back for more.

Yelp
Exceptional spot on 1st Ave. Excellent pizzas, meatballs, burrata and roasted carrots. Cool rustic vibe as well. Went for lunch with coworkers and everyone rated it an A+.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. The vibe was super cute and the service was great, but the food didn't meet expectations or the price tag. The burrata ($23) was mid, side of focaccia ($5) is basically just pizza dough, so if you're getting pizza don't bother. They recommend a pizza per person which makes them pricey personal pizzas - puttanesca ($18) was excessively salty and the vongole ($26) was dripping in oil. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem paying a premium for premium food, but this wasn't it. For pizza, Serious Pie or Rocco's is way better. For italian, try How to Cook a Wolf instead.

Yelp
This has to be the best dining experience I've had in Seattle. I saw this restaurant in The Stranger and I booked a Vday dinner because I saw they had olive oil cake. The ambiance, food, and drinks were amazing. Espresso martinis were off the menu but they had to be one of the best ones we've ever had. The Olive oil cake was a little dry (maybe that is how it usually is) but everything was superb

Yelp
Enjoyed the drinks + ambiance and the staff was really kind which can we hard to find now? Get the meatballs so delicious and the pizza was great as well. Will be coming back for sure great spot

Yelp
We got the meat balls with the bread which was essentially the pizza dough and I will tell you 1. The meat balls made your mouth water like a category 5. The pizza dough was so perfectly hand crafted I couldn't tell if I was in Italian heaven or if I was in regular hell being deprived of such perfect pizza dough by only getting one order

Yelp
This is the most unbelonging restaurant ever. We came in for a quick pit stop and they sat us in the back with an empty restaurant as if they were ashamed of us going in. Not a great experience:/

Yelp
We were very excited to try Bar Solea after reading the reviews and based on the chef name. We were pretty disappointed. The food was actually about 3 stars. Not that bad, but definitely not worth the $$$ prices. The Puttanesca pizza (anchovy and olive) was overly salty almost to the point you could not eat it without water. The margarita pizza was good but could not tell a difference here that makes it stand out versus other Italian restaurants. The Caesar salad tasted no different than one you can pick up at Costco. We also had the winter risotto which had a consistency of oatmeal. Not bad but not mind blowing great either. The best item was actually the olives & focaccia, the olives were very good and not overly salty and the bread was basically pizza dough but went well with the olives. The Missionary's Downfall was actually very good drink if you like sweeter drinks. Very crisp while sweet and fruity. The Nonino Business, Pennicilin and Negroni were just average. The main issue we had was with the service (or lack of). Our waiter was very friendly but he was not around. The location did not seem that busy when we went (about only 2/3 filled) but after we were seated it took forever for anyone to come get our order. We noticed several couple who arrived after us got their orders in first. We also noticed that some groups got bread, not sure if it was something they ordered or a complimentary item but it was not offered to us. After we ordered it took over an hour for our food to arrive. The olives and bread and drinks came out relatively quickly maybe 15 minutes after order but the pizzas and risotto came an hour later. No one came by in the meantime to offer any updates or to check up on us. Other groups that got seated after us were served first. And our salad came after we finished the pizzas. Which was mind boggling as pizza perhaps you can argue one oven was broken or too many orders so take a while but salad seems it was just forgotten and brought out later when we mentioned it. No apologies or anything. All in all the food and experience was not worth the price. The service charge of 20% was automatically added for our party of five so we couldn't even do anything about the lack of service. Hopefully it was not a racial thing as our group was one of only a couple minority tables there.

Yelp
From Chef Brendan McGill and Chef Joey. What else needs to be said. Top chef locals doing great things with food and drinks.

Yelp
Absolutely 5/5 stars! Incredibly awesome service and a very attentive staff. The Neapolitan pizza was also AMAZING!!! I will definitely be coming back for this cool, laid back, and soft ambiance that I find to be rare these days. Thoroughly enjoyed my entire experience!

Yelp
On our way off the ferry from Bainbridge we saw this place that looked nice and cozy. We were greeted and chose to sit at the bar which was also quite comfortable. The bartender was our waiter, too, and we got our drinks - which were great! - and put in our food orders. My dish came out and then more than 5 minutes later my partner's dish came - no explanation or apology that they didn't come out together. The food was good - we got the crudo and the meatballs. But, no one - our waiter included - ever checked in again to ask us how things were tasting, etc. The couple next to us, on the other hand, was constantly attended to and the bartender seemed to know them. We finished our drinks and again, the bartender never asked if we wanted another one, nor when we finished our food did he interact with us. We were sitting right in the middle of the bar so it wasn't as if he didn't see us as he (and other servers) walked back and forth. At one point I asked my partner if maybe we'd become invisible?! I finally caught the eye of the bartender and waved and he (sarcastically) waved back...we told him we were ready to go and then we got our bill and paid. It was then that I noticed the built-in 20% gratuity...is that why there was no effort to serve us with attention or engagement or interest? Overall it just made me feel mad/sad :( As a visitor to Seattle (or anywhere) one of the nice things about going out to eat is to interact with the people there - that was not the case at Bar Solea. I would recommend: Purple Cafe, Radiator Whisky, and Aerlume - all places I visited while in Seattle - if you want top-notch and friendly service as well as great food!
