Barcade in Chelsea is an excellent spot for a fun night out, whether you're on a date or looking to meet new people.
One of its unique charms is how easily you can strike up a connection--just start playing a video game with someone, and you're set.
I visited Barcade on Thursday, November 21, during an event hosted by the BLK dating app. The night featured catered American staples like fish tacos, burger sliders, nachos, tater tots, and all the classic condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo).
The food was enjoyable, though it did have a slightly oily aftertaste. Despite that, everything was well-prepared and perfect for the casual, fun vibe of the venue.
The drinks were another highlight.
I tried a few, including their "Left Hand" beer (a Guinness-like brew), a classic rum and Coke, and a sunrise-inspired cocktail.
While the sunrise wasn't to my taste, the Left Hand and rum and Coke were solid choices.
But let's talk about the real star of Barcade--the games.
Their collection features classics from Nintendo, Sega, and Midway, alongside iconic titles like Mario, Ninja Turtles, Contra, and even some thrilling shooting games like Ghost Town.
The machines are well-maintained, and the variety ensures there's something for everyone.
Whether you're into co-op or solo play, the arcade experience won't disappoint.
That said, the space does get crowded. With about 30 people at the BLK event, the venue felt tight.
If Barcade gets more popular, navigating the arcade machines could become a challenge, especially with bags or larger accessories.
My advice: travel light. The layout doesn't allow for much sitting, so be prepared to stand or lean against a barstool.
I also recommend respecting the arcade machines by not placing food on them, though sometimes you might need to improvise.
For larger people, like myself, certain games like the Daytona racing machines may feel a bit cramped.
Adjustable seating wasn't an option, but it didn't detract much from the overall experience.
One pleasant surprise was the cleanliness of the bathrooms.
Despite their intentionally grungy, graffiti-covered aesthetic, they were spotless and hygienic, even with a busy crowd.
As for the cost, my event was covered, but I estimate that for food, drinks, and games, you'd spend between $60 and $80.
For the quality of the experience, that feels totally worth it.
The best hours to visit are from 7 PM to 10 PM, as the energy starts winding down after that.
Overall, Barcade Chelsea is a fantastic spot for a night of nostalgia, fun, and meeting new people.
Whether you're in the area for work or just looking for a new regular hangout, this arcade bar won't disappoint.
I can definitely see myself returning regularly!
