The Best Bars in Phoenix

"David Tyda and Jourdain Blanchette opened this bi-level cocktail bar to celebrate Mexico’s famous agave-based spirits — namely, obscure heritage brands of tequila, mezcal, bacanora, raicilla and sotol (the only spirit on this list distilled from a plant called Desert Spoon). Their 40-page drink menu features somewhere around 200 labels, accompanied by tasting notes and explanations of origins and processes. For an even better education, consider one of a dozen flights, or book a group private tasting ($75 per person). Both the colorful upstairs cantina and moodier, dimly lit basement have different vibes and different cocktail menus, but some drinks are available in either setting." - Nikki Buchanan, Chris Malloy

Google
I only had drinks inside at the bar. All four of them were spectacular. There was a food truck outside and I had a grilled chicken and Carnitas taco and also a quesadilla. They were all delicious. The vibe downstairs was awesome. Sexy with good music. Very dark, but they had light in the right places.

Saif

Google
A fantastic selection of Mezcal even their well is tasty. I went for happy hour and recommend the beer and shot for $7. They have a good truck on site which was delicious. Got a few tacos and had myself a good ol time.

Google
BARCOA Agaveria is an incredible spot for a date night. Every detail inside—from the decor to the ambiance—feels authentically Mexican and thoughtfully curated. The mezcal and tequila selections are top-tier, and every cocktail I tried was absolutely delicious. There was also a food truck outside serving amazing food, which we were able to bring inside. The atmosphere is cool, moody, and full of character. Highly recommend for a unique and memorable night out.

Google
First time there it’s very pretty from the moment you walk in you do have to pay for parking. They have a happy hour downstairs has higher and higher price. Drinks was not expecting there to be no food items on the menu, but I did later realize that they normally have a food truck outside where a different business then provides its services

Google
We have been here several times now. We brag about this place to friends and family. This is a must if you enjoy agave spirits. We did a paint and sip event. Super fun and the staff is just fantastic. The couple running the food truck are great and the food is delicious.

Google
Really cool spot. Got tacos from the food truck & went to the downstairs bar. The tacos were SO good!! The cocktail & tequila flight were both amazing too. The bartender was super knowledgeable and taught us a lot about mezcal. Highly recommend.

Google
While I did not go inside, we were invited to a nice cozy outdoor party outside Barcoa. So overall , good time.

Google
This place is incredible! The bartenders and the owner are each so friendly and knowledgeable! I have learned a ton about agave spirits each time I’ve gone. The atmosphere is thoughtful, and filled with decor items from local artisans in Arizona and Mexico. I’ve enjoyed agave spirits here that I’ve never seen anywhere! Can’t wait to go to a tasting!

Yelp
Some friends brought me here for a birthday celebration. Barcoa Agaveria is located near the Roosevelt Row Arts District. Just look for the neon BAR sign or the bike on the outdoor patio roof if you can't find it. Being a Mezcal lover, I have been wanting to check this place out for some time. Barcoa Agaveria has a nice selection of Mexican spirits like tequila, raicilla, sotol, mezcal and bacanora. The cocktails on the menu are very creative and unique. The ambiance here is just as fun as the drinks. Barcoa Agaveria is a two-level cocktail bar. The top level is pretty cool, but the lower level is where it is at. We booked a space down below and had a nice server wait on us. The basement is dark, artsy and pays homage to Mexican culture. I really dig the vibe here. I had a hard time deciding on what drink to order because the menu had such a large selection of margarita and mezcal drinks. After getting a round of bday shots, I ordered the Elote Moda cocktail. My buddy got the Leche de Pistachio. The drinks were smooth and delicious. I recommend taking some time to explore Barcoa Agaveria. There is some fun decor and beautiful artwork on the walls. The top level is designed to be like a classic cantina. The front outside patio is pretty chill and has some colorful tables and chairs. For food, they occasionally partner with local food trucks. Barcoa Agaveria made USA Today's top bars of 2024 list. Well deserved!

Yelp
I've been to Barcoa Agaveria twice. The first time was on a Saturday afternoon for Urban Wine Walk. The second was on a Friday evening. I Ubered both times. This Mexican bar is located downtown close to Roosevelt Row. Ambiance (4/5): Upstairs, you'll find a bar with some seating as well as an outdoor patio. However, the best spot to be is downstairs. The vibes there are amazing with the dim lights and decor. I didn't even know there was a downstairs bar until my second visit. Don't miss it! Service (4/5): Solid service on both visits. Not exceptional but efficient. Food (N/A): They have a Mexican food truck outside. During Urban Wine Walk, I had some fish ceviche from the truck. However, since the sample size is so small, I feel like I need a full meal to properly comment on the food. Drinks (3.5/5): One of the cool things about Barcoa is that the drink menu is different upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs, some of the highlights include a giant margarita and basura (Spanish for trash---a cocktail served in a plastic bag lol). As you would expect, a lot of the cocktails focus on margarita and mezcal. They also have a selection of Mexican beers. Downstairs, you'll find an emphasis on craft cocktails. It's an interesting menu and I enjoyed trying a couple of their offerings. The unfortunate part? Some portions of each cocktail are pre-made. That takes away from the artistry, and ultimately, the flavor. Despite the short cut with the cocktails, I'm still a fan of Barcoa. Especially downstairs.

Yelp
What a treat to hangout here. I went with my sister to checkout a Mezcal tasting and fell in love with this place. What makes this a super cool place? There is a bar on the first floor and in the basement. First floor bar is brightly lit with a pretty chill and casual vibe. The basement bar is more cozy and intimate with dim lighting. The bartenders and hostess were super cool and friendly. There is a huge patio for outdoor seating and a delicious taco truck - Provecho, to satisfy your hunger. The food pairs well with the various tequila cocktails. Happy Hour menu at the bar upstairs is full of fun drinks with the best prices. The drink options at the basement bar are a little more fancier and pricier. Before the Mezcal tasting, I tried the Mezcalrita off the happy hour menu and it was so delicious. Parking is a pretty penny so we found parking within the neighborhood. Great place with all sorts of fun happenings daily.

Yelp
Cute little place! Parking was a challenge- we didn't realize there was a lot down the alleyway, so we ended up paying a lot for parking. The upstairs was all that was open at 3pm, but we enjoyed the tequila and mezcal drinks! The mezcalrita and mezcal mule were my favorite, and my husband loved the Paloma! Would love to go back and experience the downstairs area. Unfortunately, no food was available at the time we were there.
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
We made reservations at the bar downstairs, and it has a very cool vibe, and it sets the mood. They also have a private room for tequila, tastings. The staff is super friendly downstairs, and the drinks are well-made. Towards the middle of the night. We made our way upstairs They had different drinks upstairs, and I absolutely love the Mexican sangria. They have live music and food vendors out in the front of the bar. The only issue I had was that. I ordered a cantarito and we were never told that we had to bring it back up to the bar at the end of the night so we wouldn't get charged for it, so we were scrambling around trying to find it.

Yelp
I have wanted to try this spot for awhile and finally made it in.. This place has a nice outdoor patio and food truck close by. People were playing Lotteria on the patio. The inside is really cool with an upper and lower level. The downstairs bar has a dark and loungey vibe. The upstairs has cool decor, and I love the Mexican cabinetry... Used for the bar. My friend was running late, so I ordered guacamole and chips to munch on while I was waiting. The bartendress was really nice and attentive. I had a Paloma, actually three, but who's counting??? My friend ordered a vodka tonic... boring . I would definitely go back. I loved the vibe and the service was outstanding!

Yelp
Staff here is AWESOME!!!!!!!! Great cocktail choices!! But the Owner comes off very snobby!! As I look back at the comments they have similar experience...

Yelp
I love this place! My 2nd time there and I'm a fan. I love the outdoor area and the inside has a nice vibe too. Delicious cocktails and great service too!

Yelp
This place was really fun. Dark atmosphere with fun lighting and decor. We had a reservation around 5 but it seemed like there was plenty of seating available. Staff were all nice and knowledgeable about the drinks. We ordered four cocktails. -Rosemary's Ofrenda was nice and refreshing. -Leche De Pistacho was my favorite. It's very unique and I would order this every time. -Ellas Caminaron En Fila this was great. -Papel Picado was really interesting with the matcha and gin.

Yelp
Excellent spot for those who love tequila and mezcal or are trying to get into it. Chose their smokiest mezcal and had it made into a spicy margarita- amazing drink! I'll def go back as the drinks are great, ambiance is really nice and the service was quick.
google avatar

Ryen B.

Yelp
I'm a big fan! Love the dark downstairs bar with a fab cocktail menu. The Papel Picado is smooth, well-balanced, delish. Served with a crystal clear cube stamped with an agave plant. I also really like the Como Se Dice Negroni. Staff is really friendly and, though there are no non-alcoholic drinks on the menu, they are happy to make one if you ask. They just started a beginner Spanish class on Wednesday nights- really fun with a friendly group, perfect if you are a true beginner. Recommend!
google avatar

Shelby H.

Yelp
Great margaritas, tried a guava marg. Loved the outside patio, great casual spot to hang out and enjoy a drink.
google avatar

Trina K.

Yelp
This place is SO neat!!! It's quite dark inside so your eyes take a min to adjust. There is upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs is small, downstairs is large and intimate. Would love to go on a date here, I will be back. The mule was $12 and I think that is very reasonable. They have a food truck right outside, I had a bean and cheese burrito. Yes you can bring the food back into the bar. Service was very nice. Everyone was kind, spoke well, and drinks were quick.
google avatar

Gisselle G.

Yelp
The espresso martini was by far my favorite drink of the night! I like that it was dairy free because usually a lot of other places have dairy in their espresso martinis. We also got a mango tajin and horchata shot that were really good as well. Can't wait to go back and try their pistachio drink.

Mia

Yelp
Barcoa is always a vibe! They have two bars, I think serving different drinks, but I prefer the one upstairs. The servers are usually good, better to me upstairs. Downstairs gets a little questionable. The Carajillo is straight gas, absolutely LOVE that drink. But the food outside might take it. It might be the best mexican food I've had in Phoenix.
google avatar

Tia T.

Yelp
I found the best mezcal in Phoenix! It really is 2 places hidden in one randomly on Roosevelt row. Upstairs is a fun Mexican theme, Reggaeton playing. Downstairs is a sultry southwest feel but an authentic Mexican bar. Our drinks were incredible! We watched the servers create a drink with juice they carbonate in house, everybody was ordering it, pinkish red. The servers were really kind and chill. I parked in the lot out front and so glad we stumbled upon this place! Can't wait to come back.

David C.

Yelp
Fun Place! Good drinks, great vibe. A little tricky to find for a suburban guy like me. I will go again!
google avatar

Andre K.

Yelp
Fabulous, the place went above and beyond. The owners are very passionate about their backstory and they pay homage to Mexican culture. After revisiting this location, i would highly recommend a visit. The customer service was exceptional. Ryan and David are awesome !!!!!!!
google avatar

Kara K.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! First time visiting: they allow dogs so I was able to bring my corgi in the outdoor area. Their outdoor area is so beautiful and you can tell they put a lot of work into it. The owner of the Provecho food truck was there making some amazing tacos (Al pastor). I had a mezcal mule and I was impressed and was so glad I randomly came across this place!! Second time visiting: Stopped in before an anniversary date with my boyfriend and he was obsessed with the beer and a shot deal they have. Their carajillo is so tasty and mezcal mule is still delicious. We went again after our date and they had live music playing. Third time visiting: I was with some friends in the epic-looking basement area. They have different craft cocktails down there than the upstairs area. I am OBSESSED with the Espiritu De Café: Reposado Tequila, Espresso-Infused Spanish Liqueur, Bitter Orange Liqueur, Coconut Liqueur, Dairy Free Cream. When our reservation ended, I ordered a carajillo in the outdoor area and my friends all tried it and were so impressed with the taste. This is my new favorite bar!!! And I felt like the pricing was good. I heard they have mezcal tastings in the basement too. Definitely will be doing that for a special occasion!!

Yelp
It always amazes me how many small spaces the creative minds of Roosevelt Row can utilize. I've walked through this block thousands of times without noticing anything here, and one day, some local mixologists decided to bring it to life! You will absolutely feel excited as soon as you walk in--the blaring reggaeton, burning candles, and bright interior design just *begging* you to take lots of videos for your story. As the name would suggest, this bar specializes in agave spirits. Much of the menu is dedicated to education--page after page about definitions, how it's made, different types of tequilas. Someone upstairs really wants you to *learn*. After doing my homework, I started my night with a bacanora margarita. I enjoyed it! That smokiness, one I'd say to be more muted and refined than its sibling mezcal, is the sort of experience you need to come here to have. Most cocktail bars, even the most high-end and award-winning, aren't deliberately featuring lesser-known agave selections like these. I did sort of forget some of what I ordered, as well as what my friends ordered because half the menu was basically the same stuff! It felt like a bunch of spiked aguas frescas, as though bartenders are hoping the novelty of sotol or raicilla alone can carry them to five stars. Not quite. Nevertheless, this is one of *the* cocktail bars you should visit. Even if you're a tourist and just coming here for a few days, you should make this a priority. There is simply no better place to indulge in a selection of fine Mexican spirits, and it's a fun little enclave to let loose with your friends. I'm a fan, and I'll be back for some tequila tastings!
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
I've only been here twice but it's such a vibe and experience. Love ordering half shots to try the different tequilas. The staff is super knowledgeable and friendly
google avatar

Ben H.

Yelp
A true creative space, Barcoa is a nice addition downtown. Came in on a Saturday night to the multi level joint. 1.5 hour wait downstairs, so decided to stay upstairs. Rare drinker here. Decided on a mescal mule. Tequila is the way to go. Food looked good inside but Provecho food truck parked out front won be over.
google avatar

Kimi S.

Yelp
I've been her a couple times. Got to check out the downstairs area the other night, cool vibe, super chill, great for a group. Upstairs is more my speed, happy hour specials, small bar top, lively crowd, options for every tequila/mezcal drinker from specialty bargains to high end. Just a good time, worth the stop if you are in the area bar hopping and have a palate predilection for tequila & mezcal.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
This place, checked all the boxes and was actually one of my favorite stops when I was in Phoenix. It's in the downstairs basement part of the building and the decor is super cute. They have a great selection of tequila and other alcohol, the bartenders are friendly, and we happened to walk in when they were doing karaoke. One of the bartenders even participated in the karaoke which I thought was awesome. This place runs a tight ship and I will definitely be returning!

Lauren D.

Yelp
The drinks at Barcoa are always amazing but I am BEGGING you, PLEASE BRING BACK THE PAPEL PICADO. That drink was by far the BEST one on the menu. I stopped in today with my best friend to have our usual drink and catch up, and when we found out the papel picado was no longer on the menu, it broke our hearts into a thousand pieces. Such a heartbreaking start to 2025. I wish I was being dramatic. ;) The drink that our server recommended instead was the El Chuki, and it was delicious! If any of my papel picado fans see this, go for it! It's still light, airy, and has a nice sweetness to it! Ambiance was great as always, great service, great drinks, just sad about the menu change.
google avatar

Katy D.

Yelp
Stylish spot to get a cocktail - loved the decor in the basement. Putting a bookmark here to grab a drink post-dinner!
google avatar

Danielle R.

Yelp
I have been wanting to visit this place for quite a while now and finally got the chance to the other weekend. There are two levels to the bar, and we chose to sit downstairs. The atmosphere is so fun and if you like tequila and mezcal, I'm sure you will enjoy this place. I ordered the espresso con cordones. I thought this drink was absolutely amazing. The Mexican chocolate in it added some sweetness without being overly sweet. I hope to come back to try more of their drinks soon!
google avatar

Brandon Y.

Yelp
An amazing bar with an even better selection! Bartenders Derrick and Adam are great. Super lucky to have a place in Phoenix that even serves Raicilla. I'd highly recommend people try it and this bar out - a gem in the area
google avatar

Evelyn A.

Yelp
Overall, this was a good experience but not the best. The prices are high, the service is mid, and as agave and tequila place it was a very average. Our service took more than usual, but if you have the time it could be good.
google avatar

Chanele R.

Yelp
This place is all about cocktails and vibe. What more could you ask for? I have been a few times and gotten drinks aboveground and belowground, and I really dig how each experience feels so different. What is incredibly consistent is how good the drinks are. From a simple margarita to something more complex with a smoky mezcal, everything is truly delicious. It is the best mezcal stop in Phoenix, and while some of the drinks could tug a little on your pocketbook, it is worth it for the quality. I also spoke with the owner and got a little tour and learned that everything is independently sourced from Mexico, not going through a middleman or retailer that may not be fair to the artisan in Mexico. He said he'd rather pay more to be ethical. The owner has done an amazing job of respecting and celebrating Mexican culture without appropriating it, and that deserves a serious nod.
google avatar

Kaelynn J.

Yelp
If you're coming here for social dancing on Tuesday SKIP!!! If you're coming for overpriced drinks and rude staff then stay! The dance floor is too packed it's unenjoyable, they really should open the bottom floor again. Be prepared for 20% large gratuity tips and them having an attitude when you ask what tequila they have. Totally unwelcoming and never coming again! Seriously I could name 10 places in the valley with better dancing and better drinks.
google avatar

Brandy C.

Yelp
Hands down the best place to get drinks in Phoenix. I may come off as bias but, the dark & intimate atmosphere, liquor forward cocktails, and the chill bartenders combined make for an exquisite night on the town. I'm obsessed with the place and cannot wait to try every mezcal they have!
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Barcoa Agaveria- WOW. I had the immense pleasure of attending a hosted happy hour and meeting David (co-owner). The pride and thought that goes into every cocktail on the menu is impressive. David had something interesting to say about every single drink I ordered - even the $7 classic Canterino, which originated at roadside stands in Mexico. It's amazing how good tequila, fresh citrus, and Squirt can taste. The casual upstairs bar (deemed the Cantina) has a surprisingly great happy hour with $7 classic cocktails 4pm - 7pm every weekday. The bartender Ben took excellent care of us there before we headed downstairs to the elevated craft cocktail bar. I love mezcal, but I find that it's hard to get a balanced mezcal drink. Not at Barcoa- that's for sure. The cocktails are unique and thoughtful, inspired by dishes like elote and street tacos and containing fun ingredients like red cabbage liqueur. The bartender, Derek, was friendly and had great recommendations. I will definitely be back to try the rest of their menu (probably this Friday for happy hour. )
google avatar

Ricardo R.

Yelp
As it was one said on one, of their Instagram post this is a very spirit forward place with people who are very passionate about what they're doing and serving. two stories, two different menus, but great vibes overall. If you're over 25 definitely a place to go and hang out and just vibe, not to mention the food truck outside is amazing highly recommend their Carnitas.
google avatar

Aryana M.

Yelp
This place is super unique, you take some stairway down upon entering and end up in what feels like a tequila cave. The lighting is absolutely gorgeous as well as the wall decor and the whole menu is filled with nothing but delicious tequila drinks. Of course downtown Phoenix the parking was a little tough to find, but there is a paid parking lot right outside of the restaurant that was convenient. Highly recommend this restaurant for my tequila lovers only!

Yelp
Unfortunately stopped into Barcoa Saturday night. Had a group of 9 of us that all showed up at different times, group of 6 first than 3 arrived 20 mins later. First group orders in a normal bar setting mind you it's completely dead hardly anyone here. We order No food just drinks. After the downstairs bartender tells us not asks to sit in a private room, even tho we would have been fine sitting at the bar and the couch area. The same bartender (male with long brown hair in a bun and had a beard) made our stay so uncomfortable we all eventually left dissatisfied. Reason for the one star: His Horrible condescending attitude, weird vibes, and way he kept going over the menu like a robot reciting a script. Wanted to leave quickly after but he was upstairs talking to the bouncer I had to go get him to pay. Setting: In the room we sit in silence cause now we're in a weird social setting, the private room was nice, clean, and photo worthy, we see a single black sombrero hat hanging on the wall, just a normal black sombrero nothing extra special or grand, so one of the girls wanted to take a photo with it on. It's not nailed to the wall preventing you from wearing it we figured cool we can take photos with it. Bad idea, He says "is that the way that you really act when you go to restaurants? " okay our bad we put it back right away. Mind you half the group just left from Nobu 30 mins prior. We know how to act in restaurants settings. Comments like this from a already rude bartender, I was beyond frustrated After I ordered I received a weak under poured Montenegro and Mezcal on the rocks. Love when I order a 20 dollar cocktail and it comes out in a tiny shot glass. I work for a social media company that reviews restaurants and bars all over the valley and I always try and find the positive in places but this time the experience was way too bad not to say anything. The money I spent there was not worth it. I know he wanted us all in that room so he could charge us a big group 20% gratuity fee. I get it it's slow and you want to work at little as possible and get a big tip. Well my tip is come on Tuesday and dance and go to huaraches next door every other day of the week.
google avatar

Mandy T.

Yelp
The 4 of us came here Saturday night and were able to get seating downstairs in a bout 10mins when another reservation didn't show up. The down stairs is more loungy with specialty cocktails and the upstairs is more of a casual more energetic vibe with drinks like margaritas. Jordan was an awesome server with great advice on the downtown area. I didn't like the Leche de pastichio. It was really creamy. I didn't like the Telesto, it was too sweet. I did like the Almendra Agria. I would get this again if I were downstairs or try the margaritas upstairs. I really loved the vibe upstairs. It feels like you are in Mexico.

Yelp
Did tequila tasting as a gift for my boo!! Grant was AMAZING and very knowledgeable on every single bottle and the origin and the families behind the tequila starting from the agave plant. My boo has been to many tastings around the world and he said this was the best by far and he was even more amazed that someplace so spectacular, with such a hand picked selection, was in the desert in AZ lol.. we were in AZ visiting for a golf tournament. Definitely will visit again.

Elena R.

Yelp
Service is always good, drinks are fun and top tier in the basement. Cantina is way too small but in nice weather the outside makes up for it.

Justin T.

Yelp
The drinks are absolutely amazing and the service is equally amazing! We had Nick, and he was so funny and gave great recommendations! Definitely going back!
google avatar

Misty R.

Yelp
If you love margaritas, mezcalitas, trying new tequilas in a laid back environment the upper bar is for you. Happy hour has high-end tasting drinks for great prices. We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Drinks were great but how is it that 2 Hispanic women can't get to bar sitting when bar is OPEN? Completely disappointed with this place! Ridiculous. Next time we know better. We waited over 30min to go downstairs meanwhile everyone else not of color was going in. I finally got up & asked host and clearly pointed out what was happening, she said she would check. She finally came upstairs and told us we could go in. There was no multiple attempts to get our food order because we told them we were there for drinks only. My review is not the 1st one that points this out so I hope you guys work on this. Beautiful bar but sadly no equal treatment.

Hana A.

Yelp
Ben is so great!!!! He remembers my order the second I walk in (mexican candy shots) he is always in a good mood & so friendly & polite! I love Ben. He's the coolest. He's such a vibe. I love seeing him every time I come in!
google avatar

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great music, and great drinks?! The go to spot, mezcal drinks are made very well. You can taste the shot yet mixed well with the drink. Downstairs section is great for date night, less noisy but you have to arrive early or call and see if they offer reservations. Fills up quick. Sorry, I was more tipsy than I thought, will go back and take photos
google avatar

Julie O.

Yelp
Wow. This place is great. Random location that impressed the moment I walked in. Feels like walking into a Mexican cantina Went with friends, all ordered different cocktails upstairs and loved them all. Listened to live music with two super talented singers on the patio (Tu Dia Maria). Then went downstairs and those drinks were next level. My favorite drink was The Padrino. Great night and service. Will be back for sure!

There's a food truck on the outside with delicious food, I got bean and cheese mini chimis, sooo crispy and delicious! Outside was an area to sit and listen to the dj and the music is so romantic. Drinks were made to perfection! Bartenders service was so on par!

Yelp
okay hear me out..... I reviewed this place a couple weeks ago.... And fell in love. We've been coming here almost every weekend (and some week nights) since we discovered it, how could you not fall in love with the music? The atmosphere? The love that surrounds not only the building but flows through the crowd that circulates throughout the night? The bartenders are extremely knowledgeable, thoughtful, and kind. Provecho?!? Some of the most amazing tacos in the valley, and I'm a native to the area!! You have the ultimate weekend one stop shop when it comes to Barcoa. They set a very high standard for everywhere else in the community, thank you for having such a huge impact on my partner and I! You have our loyalty

Yelp
The atmosphere of the bar is absolutely fantastic. I loved the setup with having the food truck available outside, and the happy hour prices in the cocktails couldn't be beat. I will be back soon!
