The 24 Best Restaurants In San Diego 2024

"Barrio Dogg is a low-rider-themed restaurant and bar serving hot dogs on a Sonora-style bun and lots of tasty toppings. The Xolito is inspired by the way they do it in Tijuana, with a slick of mayo, grilled onions, jalapeños, cheddar cheese, and crunchy garlic. You could also get a bacon-wrapped dog, or opt for a veggie dog, but definitely consider sticking around for a cold michelada with a sweet-tangy-salty chamoy rim. It’s a good option before a show at The Rady Shell, a game at Petco Park, or when you desperately need something after walking around the neighborhood and admiring the murals." - ligaya malones

Where to Eat in Barrio Logan - Eater San Diego

"Baja-style hot dogs get a gourmet twist at this Logan Avenue eatery filled to the brim with lowrider memorabilia. Barrio Dogg’s innovative takes on the hot dog range from the grilled onion-topped Xolito — a homage to the Tijuana hot dog — to surprising franks like the Samurai and Pueblito, respectively inspired by bahn mi and chiles en nogada. A new taproom expansion keeps the good times rolling, with a 16-tap craft beer setup and a killer michelada list." - Mario A. Cortez

Google
Great variety of unique hot dogs! Loved El Smokey. Looked and tasted amazing 😋😋😋 Virgin fries were plain, but decent. I wish there were more in the order. Unfortunately, they ran out of desserts, will try next time :) Parking can be somewhat difficult to find, but the place is well worth it!

Google
We stumbled upon this place as we were walking in Barrio Logan and decided to try it out. We ordered the El Xolito and it was great! Hot dog good, red onions and tomatoes good, cheese good, fresh jalapenos good, more crunchy onion even better! This is a pretty solid hot dog place. I'm not the greatest fan of hot dogs but if you scale them up like this, I will eat them every day of the week!

Jillian Davis

Google
WOW! Best hot dog I've ever had, no joke. So many options to choose from, spicy, creative, flavorful...you won't be disappointed with any of them on the menu. We had El Xolito, El Smokey, El Capone, and El Pueblito (not pictured). The staff was so friendly and helpful. Definitely recommending this place to everyone 🩵

Google
Food is phenomenal. Great hotdogs, amazing options, and staff were extremely helpful, in my opinion. The facility was very nice with music and an open environment. Hotdogs are loaded with topping and ingredients. It's definitely worth a try!

Google
My visit to Barrio Dogg in San Diego was an absolute delight. The chili and triple cheese special was a flavorful journey, perfectly complemented by a crisp, local IPA Delicious beer. The ambiance is filled with intriguing sights that add to the establishment's vibrant atmosphere. It's a place that resonates with good vibes and promises a return visit. A well-deserved five-star experience! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Google
Food was tasty and the atmosphere was great. I was greeted right as I set food inside the door by Victoria and was given a menu. She was great and helped me through the vast amount of options they had for food. I got the samurai dog and it tasted exactly like a banh mi sandwich but with a hot dog. Also got the Smokey fries and that was a good one too. I will definitely be back.

Monica Gonzalez

Google
La yorona hot dog is extremely spicy. The best part about it in my opinion, is the crispy cheddar cheese shell they put in it! 🤤

Google
What can I say about Barrio Dogg...hmm... that they probably have the best tasting and delicious Hot Dogs in all of San Diego! It be so wrong to try their food out and not talk about these folks. The moment we went through their door, we were greeted by a friendly and attentive staff member. After finding out it was our first time visiting their restaurant, they walked us through their menu, and they offered us their insights to some amazing recommended entrees to check out. Can't tell you enough how good their team made us feel welcomed and the energy they brought with them. We took the teams' recommend entrees, x2 Los Xolitos, x1 El Smokey, and x1 La Vigen...and ill tell you...it was so savory that it had me considering buying another one to-go. The vibe of the shop was also really great nothing but old school funk jamming out after a long day. See the pictures themselves! If you happen to be in Barrio Logan (or @ Petco Park) be sure to check them out! You won't be disappointed!!

Yelp
I absolutely loved this place, I grew up in the lowrider scene in LA and it made me nostalgic and reminisce all the good times. I ordered the El Chihuahua fries and it you enjoy a good kick of heat, had plenty of flavor. With all that heat I ordered the El Toxica that was refreshing to cool it down. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
Never been down to the Barrio Logan District I had had Barrio dog on my list . We arrived and were seated promptly. Found the menu so full of choices . We had a few dogs super good cooked perfectly with generous toppings on my dog . Place not to busy as we got there after opening all in all we were happy with lunch I would come back for a dog for sure

Yelp
We've been going to Barrio Dogg since we moved here 3 years ago. Hubs tells people it's his favorite restaurant and describes his favorite hot dog so well to everyone. The homemade buns are great and are a perfect size for their loaded dogs and fit everything in so nicely. I got the chili dog and all the ingredients are fresh and all the flavors compliment each other very well. The loaded fries are huge and tasty as well. It's great because it still has all of the ingredients of the loaded dog and it substitutes the bun for fries. The ambiance inside is casual, but has a nice vibe to it. We order up at the cashier and the service has always been great when we ask questions about different hot dogs. Street parking can be tricky depending on the time of day. I would recommend going here!

Yelp
Phenomenal food. I can't believe I just heard about this place. These hot dogs are the San Diego equivalent of Dodger Dogs without the price tag. The decor is simple but fits in perfectly near Chicano Park and the staff is amazing. They even cooked a dogg for my dog.

Yelp
Overall 4.5 | Best gourmet hotdog spot tailored for foodies & car enthusiasts!! Food El Pueblito 5/10 El Samuri 9/10 El Smokey 10/10 El XoLito 10/10 Service Always friendly & attentive 10/10 Ambiance Clean & Organized 10/10 Recommendations/Mentions: El Smokey is the best BBQ themed hotdog my tongue has ever tasted!! El Samurai & El XoLito are gourmet hotdogs that are amazingly creative!! El Pueblito seemed sloppy & sweet. Maybe a blend of cream cheese & veggies could improve the texture & flavors.
google avatar

Yelp
The whole place is very nicely decorated , we were greeted by a nice hostess and she explained the menu and suggested a few things, we ordered a bacon wrapped hotdog with a Chile poblano with crema bits of pomegranate sprinkled and another crunchy topping I'm thinking it's onions , it was soooooo Good I highly recommend this one , French fríes , and the xolo dog ! Everything is delicious ! I left pictures so you all can see the deliciousness

Yelp
Barrio Dogg is one of those staples that I crave often! So many unique hot dog combinations to try, and they're all amazing! I opted for a bit of simplicity this time with a chili dog, but man was that chili con carne packed with flavor! Can't visit without their pepino michelada, either. PHEW, that thang hits the spot every time! Complete with a saladito So much rad lowrider art to check out while you enjoy your food and drinks, too.
google avatar

Yelp
Another small business with great customer service. We were greeted and welcomed at the entrance and given a full and very detailed description of their most popular hot dogs. Our food arrived nice and hot, freshly prepared. The rich flavors and the distinctive ingredients in each hot dog was an explosive burst in my taste buds. The location is open spaced and very roomy with great music of the 80's with walls painted depicting and giving old school vibes.

Yelp
Barrio Dogg offers a creative twist on the hot dog. Lots of different styles to choose from. I had El Chihuahua and it was delicious. My only complaint was that the artisan buns were on the weak side and I ended up with a deconstructed hot dog that I had to finish with a fork and knife. The service from the staff was was good. The restaurant itself is clean with a cool decor.
google avatar

Krysta R.

Yelp
Always delicious, staff always attentive and super friendly. The food is bomb AF Never a disappointment

Yelp
Pretty dang good!!! Had these at Petco Park and really liked them. Now I must say that I've had TJ dogs and Juarez dogs and the Juarez Dogs are by far the best but these were pretty good. It's more of a boujie hot dog but it's good! Service is fast but these aren't made to order more like grab and go because they were ready before I poured my drink.
google avatar

Dez A.

Yelp
I was absolutely in my element. Such a cool vibe from the moment we walked in and were greeted. Drawn in by the music but stayed for the food. We both enjoyed a hot dog. I was so happy with the El Capon a make on the Chicago dog, and it hit it out of the park!!! My husband absolutely loved the El Smokey with pork perfection and complimentary condiments. Both excellent dog!!! I wish we were more hungry we would have purchased sides. Next time and next time will be very soon. A must try!!!

Yelp
I've been coming to Barrio Dog since their cart infront of the gallery. Food is great! However, the customer service is by far the worst I've ever experienced. Pablo you need to take a close look at who is running your restaurant and make some changes immediately. I've never seen such an unpleasant and unprofessional attitude from any service staff before. I've been a big advocate for Barrio Dogg all these years. Unfortunately, I will not be returning.

Yelp
summary: cool spot with clearly a lot of culture attached to it. The food was solid and the venue is cool. Much like the name suggests, the place specializes in different types of hot dog combinations. I was hoping for a little bit more balance in the dogs because I felt they leaned a little bit on the sweeter/spicier side without a balancing citrus or base to bring the flavor back a little bit. Went during an off hour, so there wasn't too much interaction with the service staff, but no complaints. Food came out in roughly 10-15 minutes. Overall a cool spot for sure and would recommend checking it out if you haven't been.

Yelp
Overall: gorgeous and colorful spot with indoor/outdoor feel, fun hotdogs, creative drinks, okay service, and an inclusive single stall restroom. If i had the option, I'd give it 3.5 stars. I wish the menu was formatted differently. It felt like you had to read a paragraph for each dog and there weren't pictures to help you skim. El chihuahua dog was absolutely delicious and El samurai was okay- it was too sweet and kind of soggy. The drink menu was fun, but I'm pregnant and they wouldn't make anything without alcohol. The food came out pretty quickly. There is no tap water. If you want a drink, you have to pay 4+ dollars for a bottled water or other drink. They don't have high chairs, but they do have a cool kids menu item that my son loved. The hotdogs were cut like little octopi and it was super cute. The churro chips it came with were burnt and covered in too much sugar for kids especially in combination with the included capri sun.

Yelp
Oh hell, yeah barrio dog is the best!! I came here with some riding buddies at the end of a ride. I had no idea how awesome this place was these dogs are gourmet and i'll be back. This place is wonderful. I need to try all their dogs. Pros: Lots of dogs to choose from Excellent customer service Clean restroom Con's Not much parking, but we came on motorcycles so we can park anywhere we want
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered the El Xolito which is a Tijuana styled hot dog: mayo, mustard, ketchup, red onion, Roma tomatoes, chopped fresh jalapeno, cilantro, crunchy garlic, grilled onions, cheddar cheese, sour cream, salsa verde and sriracha aioli. Then I got a side of Elotitos: Sweet corn smoked with hickory and mesquite topped whipped lime crema, cotija cheese and tajin chili powder. That whipped lime crema was next level and that was my first time trying that. I definitely need to get that again just for the whipped crema.
google avatar

Yelp
I have only ordered on Ubereats so I can't speak for how the experience is in person. I will say that I have been looking for a place like this for a minute and oh boy did they deliver. These dogs are LOADED. One of these things is a small but reasonably sized meal. The put on the absolute most in terms of toppings and if anything wayyyy more than anything I could have expected. I have tried 4 of their dogs and they were all amazing. 3 of them I did not grab pics of because I ate them too quickly but I have one pictured here. I eat VERY spicy food, like competition level spice tolerance. La Yorona is the real deal. I did eat it no problem but this is one of the only foods I have ordered with no customization that touched my spice taste buds. Let's just say I was surprised. Prepare to experience an explosion of flavors if you eat here. I haven't tried all their options and I might like some less than the ones I've tried thus far but they have all been amazing. Next time I'm in Barrio Logan I'll stop by and might update my review.

Yelp
We have been talking about Mexican inspired hot dogs ever since we visited Mazatlan, Mexico and visited Hot Dogs El Charley there. We finally found a spot that can compare to that famous Mazatlan spot in terms of quality dogs with the best toppings (albeit a bit pricey). Tonight we tried the El Xolito which is Barrio Dogg's signature/original dog. We also ordered an El Bombero because I love spicy and that one Is made with seven distinct chiles. Tip: if you like spicy food don't miss out on this one - it's tasty and packed with heat. We also shared some fries to go with our dogs. The service at Barrio Dogg was friendly and prompt. Parking could be difficult nearby depending on the day but there is limited parking right by the restaurant which is reserved for the restaurant. Cool vibes inside with music playing and low rider decorations everywhere. They have a decent selection of beer on tap as well as regular soft drinks. Again, the only thing we weren't crazy about was how pricey everything was. We definitely recommend giving it a shot though and will definitely be back the next time we want a tasty Mexican inspired dog.

Yelp
This gourmet hot dog restaurant has a variety of creative large hot dogs and delicious sides like loaded fries or cup of elote. The dot dogs like the Tijuana style hot dog are crowd favorites and packed with Ingredients. It was delicious. The restaurant had ample seating and was very clean. They have Agua Fresca, sodas and a variety of alcohol drinks. A nice beer goes great with the hot dogs. Service was friendly and helpful. We loved this gourmet hot dog place.
google avatar

Myphuong L.

Yelp
This place deserves 5/5. We loved it so much, we came back twice in one day. It's their amazing soft bun that got me! In the morning when they opened, we got El Xolito (TJ dog), El Vaquero (chile con carne), and elotitos. The TJ dog was the best. The crunchy garlic and sriracha aioli took it over the top. The chili dog was too meaty. I'm not a fan of elotes but the elotitos here have a whipped lime cream that is so different and not so cheesy. At night we returned right before closing and picked up Aleman (German dog). Not a fan. Unless you're into red cabbage sauerkraut, mustard and pickle. All the things I dislike but my friend wanted to try it. They don't have free water cups. You have to buy the bottle. So they upsell on the pineapple aqua frescas which was what we got. That was yummy. Not too sweet and not too syrupy. Parking in this area is all street. Barrio Dogg has two spots right in front at the 30 min green zone.

Yelp
First time visitor from Nor. Cal & I had a great experience here! The service was incredible, everyone was attentive and so welcoming. The place is amazing and so beautiful. I love seeing the cultura everywhere! And of course, the food was awesome. I got El Smokey hot dog with bacon & La Mañosa michelada. Both were great choices, now I have to come back to try everything else!!
google avatar

Aidee P.

Yelp
Decided to try this place after reading the yelp reviews and it did not disappoint. Their hotdogs were delicious and the micheladas were even better. This is a must try for anyone in the area.
google avatar

alea s.

Yelp
The best Tijuana style hot dogs in San Diego. I been coming here for years and the service is excellent. The Chicano art is my favorite
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Really good hot dogs and some of the best food I've had at a baseball game. The El Xolito is really well done and full of toppings and flavors. Service was just okay, didn't really explain the menu that well, and $18 for a can of beer is really excessive imo. Stick to the food here and beware of hidden fees.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Service was amazing! #1 dog with added bacon was delicious! Decor was great! I see recommend this place for anyone who wants an upgraded street dog!
google avatar

Trevor M.

Yelp
The decor inside and outside was very colorful and is even on their water bottles and drink cups. Loved that. We had a mango michelada which was very good. I had the Dogs tasted great but it all fell apart after the first bite or two. Kinda wanted to eat it like a hotdog, not hotdog salad. Service was friendly.
google avatar

Murissa M.

Yelp
Barrio Doggs is a must if you are in the area. They are consistent. I tried their food a few years ago and returned today, still as good as it was then. The hotdogs are made with 100% angus beef and they are served on a Sonora style artisan bun. The big bun brings it all together. They also have veggie dogs on the menu as well. During my recent visit, we ordered fries and two hotdogs. The fries are crispy AND seasoned, the perfect combination. We also ordered the El Xolito and the El Capone, both totally different and delicious. The El Xolito is a Tj style dog with tons of toppings, too many to list. The crunchy garlic and grilled onions really add flavor. I ordered the hotdog bacon wrapped (+$2.00). The El Capone is a Chicago style dog with fewer toppings, but still full of flavor. The bun was covered in poppy seeds, a bit much, but that's an easy fix...rub them off and enjoy. They also have several family recipe sides (Elotitos, macaroni) and a couple of handmade desserts. They sell handmade Micheladas and signature drinks. Soft drinks and auga del dia (made fresh daily in house) as well. Parking is always something I comment on...Parking is limited, but not impossible. There's some reserved parking and the street of course, fair game.
google avatar

Chantelle S.

Yelp
The food was amazing. Definitely must try the Smokey dog with a side of elote. The Micheladas were fire. The service was on point and friendly as we walked in. The ambiance is one of a kind. Great music (oldies but goodies ) and small local feel to the place. We'll definitely be back!!!
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
I love me some Bacon Wrap Hotdogs from the street vendors after a UCLA football game walking back to our car. I found an elevated hot dog place in Las Vegas downtown - Dirt Dogs! So this is my comparison. Barrio Dogs are 5 stars for the dogs. The street corn 2-3 Stars. The Drinks 5 stars!!! We had just eaten at Salud down the block and walked by and saw and smelled their food. Decided to give it a try hoping it would be as good as Dirt Dogs and for the Dogs it was. We shared the TJ Style dog w bacon, Street Corn, and a Mango Marg. The dog was legit! Very tasty dog and flavorful w the added bacon. Elevated Street Dog, reminds of the carts at an UCLA game. Street Corn not so good. Canned corn w no char. A foamy mayo on top. Below average and I don't recommend it. Too many good street corn out there. The Mango marg rimmed w Chamoy/Tajin with pieces are dried spicy mango on top. Very good drink. There are many Dogs that look amazing and we want to try them. We will be back soon, but next time on am empty stomach and ready for a couple dogs and drinks.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Best service Better staff And amazing food. Nothing is better than ending your day with a barrio dog
google avatar

Denise M.

Yelp
Always deliciously reliable! I've gotten El Xolito (pronounced cholito), El Pueblito, and El Chihuahua, and El Xolito remains my favorite. It's their TJ style dog, with a wide variety of toppings and never misses. The elotitos are also delicious - not too heavy and the corn kernels are nice and snappy, with the lime crema on top bringing that fresh flavor to balance out the butteriness. Service is friendly, and the vibe is cool with lowrider culture all around the space. Top notch car watching from the countertops facing out on the street as well, hits all the marks!
google avatar

Iris S.

Yelp
The perfect mid day snack! Everything was very tasty, extra love for their sides and the tiramisu. Definitely recommend checking it out.
google avatar

Siria F.

Yelp
I ordered the El Smokey' hotdog and it was bomb! So good. The service was good. The line was long and it took a while for us to order our food but the food was worth the wait. I tried their La Fresca Michelada for the first time and it was refreshing. The music was on point and I love all the art on the walls.
google avatar

Deanna C.

Yelp
If you're looking for a REALLY good hot dog, make sure you stop here because they got some of the best hot dogs I have ever had in my life. We had the Vaquero, which did not disappoint at all. We had the Pueblito, which was full of crazy different flavors topped with pomegranate, which is wild to think of on top of a hot dog but it works. My only complaint is the long wait to get in and that they are not located in Northern California, because I would love to stop in to eat from time to time
google avatar

Olga M.

Yelp
Excellent food and service at Barrio Dogg located in Barrio Logan. The hotdogs never disappoints. The restaurant makes their own bread which is very delicious!! The restaurant is nicely decorated and very clean. I always order El Xiolito hotdog and my husband always orders the hotdog of the month. He tried El Compadre and really enjoyed. We added French fríes, Mexican street corn and Mango Michelada also delicious. The manager & staff are always very friendly and welcoming. I definitely recommend this restaurant in San Diego!!
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
This place has gone down hill. It used to be one of my favorites. I loved the Micheladas and the samurai dog. It's a cool spot to grab a drink and people watch. The last 4 times I've went the food is terrible and the staff is so rude. I will not be spending my money here anymore.
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
Delicious food and excellent service. Food was very tasty, surprisingly fries were mine and my finances most favorite dish. Definitely will return soon, the ambiance was great and very welcoming
google avatar

Ash D.

Yelp
10/10 Micheladas and the service was very friendly. Tried 3 and they were all a hit. Will come back for sure. The salsa in the michelada was insane
google avatar

Victoria B.

Yelp
We just love this place! Food, drinks, service, and ambiance are always on point. Our son, who's now 2yo, loves hotdogs because of Barrio Dogg and how they cut the kids dogg "octopus" style. He's also always dancing to the music they have playing. I always get a veggie El Samuai dogg (it's just SO good -- maybe I'll venture out and try a different dogg one day?) and I finally got to order a La Manosa (mango michelada) again since giving birth to our baby girl -- it was so refreshing, I missed it. Always a great experience here, thank you all!
google avatar

Traci W.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food, service and ambiance of this place. They also play really good music
google avatar

Tony V.

Yelp
BEST HOT DOGS IN TOWN!!! I had La Llorona dogg and it was hot!!! The best part was it had great flavor too! I got a side of fries but honestly the dogg would have been enough. The micheladas were also on point. I will definitely be coming here again!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
google avatar

Raelle Q.

Yelp
First time at this place and the food was amazing. Best esquites I've ever had. Make sure to add bacon to your dog, it's the cherry on top. Love the wall art and they were playing the jams, from oldies , old school to 90's rap. I would definitely go back! Super easy to find as well. Would love to add the 5th star but unfortunately the staff wasn't as friendly, since it was our first time and we did have a few questions on the menu items.

Gabeal V.

Yelp
We've been to Barrio Dogg several times now, both just the two of us and with family and friends, and I have to say, we're consistently impressed! The creative hot dog styles with a Mexican twist are always delicious, and we love that you offer veggie options too. Another thing that really sets you apart is the consistent quality of the food and the excellent service and ambiance. Every time we visit, we know we can expect to have a pleasant time. Keep up the fantastic work!
google avatar

Geoffrey B.

Yelp
Eating at Barrio Dogg isn't simply consuming food....it's an experience. With 100% black Angus beef hot dogs and buns made fresh in house daily they take eating to a whole new level. I frequently come here AND bring guests and coworkers because I refuse to keep this gem all to myself. Highly recommend the el smokey with their homemade tamarind bbq sauce *chefskiss*. Did I mention you can get your hotdog also wrapped in bacon? Please give barrio dogg a shot and let them alter your perception on hotdogs forever! Keep elevating barrio dogg I love yall!
google avatar

Alicia S.

Yelp
Bread was good Meat was good Topping were delicious Will go back We got the xolito and Havana Service was fast Ambiance was nice

Barry H.

Yelp
One of our coworkers mentioned we should visit Barrio Dogg, so we had a "team" meeting. Located in the Barrio Logan area of San Diego, this was a very good choice. The food was delicious and the service was very good. Before you are seated, the hostess does a very good job of explaining the different options available and also recommends choices depending on what your tastes happen to be. For me, I chose the special of the month, the El Maniaco Hot Dog washed down with "This is Not my Beautiful Wife" Hazy Pale Ale. Good selection across the board. Oh, and the ambiance is really cool, so drop by and check it out.
google avatar

Pete D.

Yelp
Had the el Capone. Amazing flavor. One of the best dogs I have ever had. And the service was outstanding. Highly recommended!
