Bartlett House - Review - Hudson - Hudson Valley - The Infatuation

"Bartlett House is technically in Ghent, about a 15-minute drive outside of Hudson, but you should make the journey for baked goods, lunch, and dinner on the weekends. In an old brick building with a striped-awning-covered front porch, Bartlett House is the kind of exceedingly pleasant place you picture when you start daydreaming about a weekend escape on Monday morning. They serve a big menu of French-ish farm-fresh classics, and we haven’t had a disappointing thing here. If you don’t have a car to drive to Bartlett House, the Maker Hotel on Warren Street sells bread and pastries from Bartlett House in their cafe during the day." - Team Infatuation

The Perfect Weekend Guide for Eating and Drinking in the Hudson Valley - Eater NY

"Located in a historic, restored railroad hotel from the 1800s, Bartlett House’s charm is surpassed only by the caliber of its food. The all-day bakery and café has both an impressive selection of breads and pastries (the cherry cornmeal scone is especially phenomenal), plus a satisfying menu of American classics like breakfast sandwiches on homemade English muffins, and hot, fried apple pie slices. Don’t leave without buying some of their incredible jams, in flavors like blueberry-rose or beet-blackberry." - Juliet Izon

Julia Roberts and I Fully Endorse the Dreamy Breakfast at Bartlett House | Bon Appétit

"Filled with wholesomeness, off-duty celebs (apparently Julia Roberts is a regular!), and fresh baked goods, it’s the perfect place to sink into a long, lazy brunch before heading back to the fast pace of the city. I like to order a luxurious spread: housemade bread served with butter and jam, a maple cortado, and a few dishes to share, like the green shakshuka. Packed with charred kale and topped with feta and a runny egg, it’s my absolute favorite thing on the menu. It also photographs well in the gorgeous space, a 19th-century home brimming with gold accents and beautiful green-stained wood flooring. Once I’m caffeinated and full, I’ll pick up some jams (great gifts!) and grab some goodies from the bakery side of the house for my drive back. I change up my order every time, but I always get the ham and cheese croissant. Instead of having everything hidden inside, the croissant is flattened and topped with a slice of perfectly salty country ham and melted Gruyère cheese. It’s the first of the baked goods to go, which are almost always finished before we get back to the city. If it’s good enough for Julia, it’s good enough for me." - ByEmma Fishman

I planned a quick stop here before heading to Art Omi for a solo adventure. There have been so many great reviews that I was excited to check the place out for myself. Customer service was excellent - friendly and helpful staff. The building itself is beautiful! There is inside dining as well as outdoor seating on the deck, which looks out over the flowers in bloom. You can feel the history of this place in the best way possible. On this day, it was just a quick grab and go for me, but I look forward to coming back and time to enjoy a meal. I had to try the hashbrown, which was served with both a homemade ketchup and a homemade aioli. I had never tried aioli with a hashbrown before - and it was delicious! Chai tea was perfectly made as well. I brought the pastries home for a later treat, and they were excellent as well. I will make sure to stop here again this summer.

We stayed in the area 2 months ago for a few weeks, and have stayed there before, going back a few years. The barista they have now makes lattes much faster than a former one. When ordering hot food, you can't go wrong, but some of the pastries, like the pistachio croissants and the cornmeal scones, have either been baked in too hot an oven, or they have been reheated. We spent a lot of time trying to figure that out. The donuts are all great while the scones are very dry. It is fun to sit out on the porch when it's cold. Blankets are provided in a basket inside. The last photo is of my own sticky buns. They did not seem familiar with sticky buns, at all, so I sent them this photo and my recipe.

Highly recommend a stop to this bakery for both the breakfast menu but also the baked goods. The English muffin for my chorizo sandwich was a perfect crispy and chewy to that complimented all the ingredients inside.

Google
In all my travels and of my 2 million reviews I have posted, I have to say this was the best eggs Benedict I have ever had as well as the donut and Scone. Historic old hotel building beautifully restored and suited for its purpose. Sandwich menu looked equally as rewarding. We will be back on our future visits for sure

Loved everything we had here. the breakfast sandwich on homemade english muffin is on point. you can taste the good quality, real sausage patty. delicious cortado and cardamon bun. will come again!

Google
This place is incredible. While a bit pricey I wholeheartedly believe it is because they use the best ingredients. I went here when I was visiting for a weekend away with my college friends. We went here for breakfast twice and lunch once. I was so impressed! I bought a jam to bring home and won't shut up about it to anyone! You have to go here, it is a pure gem!

One of my favorite bakeries. It’s a little bit far from nyc but I can go sometimes. Because there are good places to go near the bakery. I liked all the breads and sandwiches with coffees we ordered. The texture and flavors are always good. The staff are friendly and the store is always clean even the restroom. I love all the details. p.s. there is a elevator for wheelchair. Only one thing I don’t like : putting all the bread in thin paper bag even though for eating there. I don’t like mix all together or cream on the other bread.

Google
I’ve always loved the food here - it’s delicious - but unfortunately, the service is disappointing. My friend and I arrived around 11:30 am, well after the morning rush, and waited more than 45 minutes for our order, despite the restaurant being nearly empty. To make matters even more confusing, a family of six who arrived 20 minutes after us received their food before we were even acknowledged. I’m not sure if the delay was due to being understaffed, disorganization, or the distraction of a celebrity dining in at the same time, but regardless, it was frustrating to be overlooked. I was really looking forward to having a nice experience since today is also my birthday and Bartlett House is where I wanted to start the day, but In the end, I had to ask for my meal to go and left without any recognition or apology for the wait. It’s a shame because I genuinely enjoy the food, but the service doesn’t match the quality coming out of the kitchen. I hope they address this, because this place has so much potential.

Yelp
This is a must on any trip to the Hudson Valley or for locals who love pastries and delicious foods. We've been coming since they opened and it just keeps getting better. Whether it's a quick pastry pick up or sitting down for breakfast, brunch or lunch, everything is delicious. It's Paris in a cafe upstate. Run, don't walk here! Plenty of parking and seating on non busy days/times. Go early for best selection - no chai vanilla donuts were left on a recent trip. :( See website for more details.

Yelp
Always excellent. Loved the hot chocolate options, this visit tried the Oaxacan spicy hot chocolate with chipotle and cinnamon, awesome. Get there early if you want baked items, they ran out this time

Yelp
Very good breads and pastries in a cozy setting. Great place to grab a light breakfast in town. Their sourdough is amazing! There is also decently strong wifi and about 7-8 tables in the back where you can sit and work when it's quiet. Prices are a little on the high side, for example the ham croissant is almost $6. The coffee is also very good, but there can be a bit of a wait when it gets busy, particularly on weekend mornings.

Yelp
Pretty place. Good food. Clean bathroom. Service lacking. Coffee filled only 3/4. Curt counter-man. Had attitude that didn't make us feel welcome.

Yelp
We only have time to do a quick grab and go on a Saturday morning! I wished I grabbed a lot more than the latte and scone! I always get a scone if that is an option and this was a cherry scone, oh boy, that was one of the best piece of bakeries I have ever tasted! I would be in trouble if this is near where I live! My friend got a croissant and she loved it too. I need to tag this in case I am ever back at this part of the country!

Yelp
What a find! Driving back to NJ from VT and we decided to stop here to refresh ourselves. Our sandwiches were great and the fries were good as well. We ordered two orders of fries for 4 people, but the serving size is large, on order would have sufficed. I also bought a bottle of the blueberry rose jam and it is great, way less surgery then your typical jam. The cafe is also decorated very nicely.... i was instantly relaxed when i walked in. I hope we remember to stop here again when we are in the area.

Yelp
What's not to love. Unless you are diabetic then it's amazing. Every single thing I've ever eaten here is beyond delicious. The summer bbq is also phenomenal.

Johan J.

Yelp
Food is a bit costly for what it offers. The truly interesting thing here is the café, though. I imagine it's a great brunch place when indoor seating returns. The crew was courteous and friendly.

Yelp
Fantastic stop coming from Art Omi, great service and location, al fresco dining and maybe the BEST hamburger I ever had, brioche bun, perfectly charbroiled with thin fries and a great array of sauces, house ketchup, romesco, alíoli and mustard, the maple cured bacon was the top price. My wife had the broiled vegetables and just look at the photo, they really know what they are doing at this place and I plan to stop there when exploring the Hudson area. Service was efficient and attentive, looking forward to further explore the menu

Yelp
Ordered two breakfast sandwiches. The Lure and the Avo... I specifically asked for no eggs on the Lure...they ADDED the egg and removed damn near everything else! It was terrible no words...the Avo was mid, and the hash browns were absolute TRASHHHHHHH. They need to stick to the pastries and just close the damn kitchen altogether what a disappointment. I want my money BAAAAACKKKKK.

Yelp
Delicious eggs Benedict and fried chicken sandwich. Loved eating on the porch. Was raining but was fully covered and comfortable. You order at the counter and take a number.

John S.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Highly recommend. Get the egg sandwich, simple and delicious!!

Yelp
Just returned to Bartlett House today since Covid (we're locals to Ghent). Very disappointed in changes to service - no longer provide table service, now providing 'cafeteria style' ordering along with your own pick up of beverage/coffee, tableware, busing of your own table of dishes. Food good (had Eggs Benedict), but without table service, pricing out of line. Will continue to choose Hudson for breakfast/brunch going forward, sorry to say. Many choices in Hudson at same price point with great quality, providing full and attentive service.

Yelp
This place used to be awesome. But now it's overpriced for tasteless food and aloof attitude. A roast beef sandwich for $16 is really a half sandwich and no flavor. Not impressive. The Tortilla soup ($12) had tiny shavings of chicken, a half can of chickpeas, and barely a cup of tasteless broth. How about a little parsley to add color? Something. Boston cream donut used to have real vanilla specks, if I remember correctly. Now, it's again tasteless. Not worth the calories. Maybe it's because we arrived 1/2 hour before closing (2pm). But the chef should have some quality control at the end of the day. If there are only tiny flecks of chicken at the bottom of the soup, it shouldn't be served. If there's are only end pieces of bread for the sandwich, give two sandwiches of the end pieces. Doesn't that seem fair? Please guys, what happened? It's been a few times like this. I'm writing because i hope you guys improve. I'm sad that I won't take another chance on this place for a long while.

Yelp
Good but high prices turn me off. Not any better than Fili's Deli in Valatie and their desserts at Fili's are better too, for a smaller price tag!

Liz F.

Yelp
The coffee is excellent, especially the cold brew iced coffee. Their croissants are available in multiple varieties, the best being the phenomenal Ham and Gruyere (I think) croissant, which has mega flavor. I don't like muffins, but they make me like muffins. All around the baked goods are top notch. Bathroom facilities are nice, and the staff is friendly. It is a touch pricey, but if you can swing it, the product is great. Oh, and best Jelly Donut on the planet! The decor is modern and clever, but frankly I am not terribly concerned with that. But you could bring clients there and it will look impressive enough.

Yelp
Wish I could give more stars. This place was SO bomb. From the cozy decor with big windows letting in natural light and their edison bulbs with different shades to their delicious selection of breakfast/pastries. We took one bite into their Rosewater pear muffins and instantly regretted not getting more. We started our brunch off with a white and gold flat white as well as a blueberry rose coffee. While the former was an interesting fusion of ginger, turmeric, and coffee - VERY strong on the first two flavors I might add; the latter had a more subtle fruitiness that others might appreciate. Neither was quite up my alley but their entrees were on point. We followed up with a shakshuka with lentils and croque monsieur. The shakshuka was awesome and provided a bit of a kick that some might interpret as spicy but the gf and I found perfect. The croque monsieur, on the other hand had a pleasant crust on its toast and a fine balance of thinly sliced prosciutto, mornay, and gruyere cheeses. I wish there was more! Finally, we took a mix of pastries to go: chocolate peanut brownie cookie (stuck true to its name and contained crunchy peanuts as well as peanut butter, my favorite), a candied lemon zest shortbread (chewy on the inside and a wonderful palate cleanser), golden raisin walnut cookie (yummy and not overly sweet), a potato basil bureka (rich in savory goodness and dangerously flakey), finally the pear rosewater muffin mentioned above (wonderfully moist with chunks of pear and hint of rose). We NEED one of these in NYC

Yelp
YES, it's worth driving down here just for the Boston Cream donut, even though it's not really a donut but a German berliner (boule de Berlin). The pastry is fresh, rich, and soft, but most importantly, the cream is not too sweet and the chocolate tastes like dark chocolate (and not like cocoa sugar). My husband called it the best doughnut he ever had in his life and I'm so glad to have found a piece of European nostalgia in the Catskills. We also had a sandwich which was delicious but not extraordinary. Worth mentioning that the bread was excellent though. Highly recommend picking up lunch here before heading to Art Omi or just enjoying it on their charming terrace.

Yelp
Really loved the bakery- I was disappointed that I could not try the pistachio croissant bc they ran out. But I tried their muffin and bread and they were delicious! Setting was cute but kind of small. I liked that they had outdoor seating and plenty of parking.

Yelp
Worth a quick stop and detour when you are in the area. We enjoyed our coffee, twice baked pistachio croissant and Boston cream doughnut. Also picked up a blueberry rose jam.

Yelp
We met up with some friends whom we haven't seen in forever on Sunday morning here. We pretty much spent most of the day at this place, having a great time, ordering food and drinks, and were all set to give it five stars since everything was pretty much perfect. Then we ordered from "Bartlett House embers" and the experience quickly soured. To start: aesthetics. This place is stunningly beautiful and the integrity of the simple decor speaks volumes. The brick is lovely and the structure itself screams Hudson Valley charm; it's clear that a loving hand restored this place and we admire their decision to keep it classy. The ordering system isn't the most streamlined because you start at the register and then have to wait at the end station to get your coffees. The problem is that several people are waiting there, and it's right by the front entrance, so the space gets jammed. That said, every staff person we encountered inside was kind, quick, and seemed genuinely content to be working there. Food is delicious! Our friend had preordered some baked goods, which was lucky because many of them had already sold out by the time that we arrived. The pistachio croissant is INCROYABLE. Le WOW--possibly the best one that we've ever had and puts our (former) favorite at Common Bond in Houston to shame. The chocolate chip cookie is also pretty good and the blueberry muffin is fine but usual. We enjoyed our frittata plate (tbh one of us thought it was only OK but he didn't eat it right away), and tried a bite of our friend's veggie quesadillas, which we loved. Cold brews are standard. THEN. We spent so much time there catching up that it was already lunch, so we wanted to try something from the Argentinian grill that had recently been fired up. We got two orders of the "Shaved Leg of Lamb," which with tax and tip came to almost $60. Fine, no problem, we eat a fair amount of lamb and we know it's pricey. But here's the description on the menu: "Chimichurri, herb salad." When one of us went to pick up the dishes, 1) The lamb was NOT shaved, it was rather thickly cut, and 2) There was nothing in the to-go container except the lamb with the chimichurri on it. When she asked about the herb salad, the young girl they had handing out the food pointed to the chimichurri and said that that was it. One of us politely explained that it wasn't and at that point the female chef who had overheard our conversation took the dishes, grabbed fistfuls of herbs from a container, and angrily threw those over the lamb. Didn't say a word! Wow, SUPERB customer service. Listen, we're not expecting a Michelin-star herb salad here, but we just gave you a decent tip and YOUR OWN MENU has it on there, so there's no reason to get all huffy and puffy with your CUSTOMER WHO IS GIVING YOU MONEY when she simply asks about what should be provided for THIRTY DOLLARS a pop. Re. the dish itself, the lamb was OK, a bit dry and overcooked, but the chimichurri was zippy and nicely spicy. The randomly throw-on herbs--ahem, "herb salad"--really went a loooooooong way, so great plating!!!!!! OK, long review, oopsa daisy. We want to emphasize that our experience with Bartlett House itself was nearly flawless and we will be thrilled to come back again next time we're in the area. Our advice: stick to them and stay away from the overpriced and underdelivering grill. (BTW, as Texans we can assure you that if you sit outside when the grill is going, you will inevitably end up smelling like smoke--clothes, hair, etc--which not everybody might be going for as their Sunday morning vibe.)

Yelp
Literally the best breakfast! The egg sandwich on a homemade English muffin was delicious. Coffee and pastries are top notch. Old historic house with charm and great service. Love that the ingredients are local or on site. My only regret was not getting an entire loaf of bread.

T H.

Yelp
This place is a real standout in the area. Breakfast sandwiches are typically not something to get too excited about, but these are amongst the best we've had. The pastries and cookies have been consistently excellent each time we have been there, and the bread I have has from Bartlett house has been great also. The people there are friendly and service is always good.

Tina L.

Yelp
Great vibes. Nice staff. Cruffin gets five stars! Airy and flaky dusted with sugar and filled with perfectly delicious light pastry cream - but ordered it because it was supposed to be filled with coffee cream but didn't taste like coffee. We also got the 4 reds muffin and jam donut which were tart not too sweet. I saw the barista squirt lots of mixture in and was worried it'd be too sweet, but the blueberry rose latte just tasted like coffee. The strawberry mint soda was the perfect refresher after our walk at Art Omi, but again the mint flavor was hard to detect. Didn't get to try the savory items from the kitchen.

Yelp
A wonderful spot to have breakfast in a beautifully restored railroad hotel from the 1870's, great job guys! The grounds are beautiful with lots of flowers and a nice porch. We sat inside in the dining area and I noticed the separation from the coffee shop area which was non stop with patrons coming in and out. That was a nice touch to help keep the intimacy of the dining area. The décor was mostly of bookshelves loaded with books, and tins of tea with dishware that I believe is for sale. I really liked the wood work and the frosted glass doors. Our server was prompt and very friendly. The menu had a bit of something for everyone and was well thought out. The coffee was a decent mild house blend. I went with the Farmers Breakfast which consists of two farm eggs, toast, breakfast potatoes and choice of meats. I went with the chicken kotletki for meat since it was a newby to me. My wife went with the same except she chose the sausage (which came out undercooked). The portion was decent and the delicious bread that came with it had raisin, dried fruits and walnuts inside. My son had a huge plate of French toast and loved it. The prices were high $12-$14 for most of the breakfasts, but the quality of the food was definitely on the high end. Everything was fresh and delicious. One critique would be the sausage. It's hot which is fine with me, but a heads up on the menu would be great for people who cannot eat hot pepper. The bathrooms were clean and the coffee shop area was beautifully set up and very inviting. Stocked with a lot of breads/baked goods/pastry options and a pleasant smell of fresh coffee. Our three adult and one child breakfast was just shy of $100 so it can be a bit pricey.

Yelp
Well my pregnant self lives way too close to this incredible place. Today my husband and I tried a pistachio croissant, jam filled donut, ham & cheese croissant and a pecan donut. Also an amazing carrot, orange and ginger juice. Honestly everything was great and I do consider myself to be picky. Something I loved was that the pastries weren't the slightest bit too sweet. I'd have to say my favorite was the pistachio croissant and the juice. Def walking back for more way too soon.

Charles D.

Yelp
Had breakfast there when it first opened Breakfast was good but $2.50 for a second cup of coffee was a bit much I will say I am more of a diner guy

Yelp
I live for their chocolate croissants and baguettes, the staff are so friendly and their coffee's great.

Yelp
We got a weekend place in Ghent about ten years ago, and drove past that lovely building regularly, wondering what business - if any - would come in and bring it back to life. We couldn't be happier with the place. I've eaten there brunch there several times, and we get bread and/or other carb deliciousness there almost every weekend, so I've made my way through most of the vegetarian options they have. The bread is amazing, fresh and delicious, bread the way it's meant to be. The walnut apricot bread is standout, but even the plain baguettes are so delicious I never know if one is going to survive the three minute drive back to the house. Among the pastries, I don't think I've had a single thing that's disappointed, but the pistachio croissants should probably be illegal. I'm afraid I'm going to wake up in the parking lot one day covered in croissant flakes and pieces of pistachio filling. Also noteworthy are the chocolate croissants and the regular old croissants, but really, I don't think you can go wrong at that pastry counter. For brunch/meal items, I've discovered the shirred eggs and I don't think anything can ever make me learn how to quit them. Eggs baked in a small cast iron skillet with cream, leeks, mushrooms and gruyere. Absolutely delicious. There are a few other items I really want to try, but I can't bring myself to order anything else yet. My husband loves the chicken kotlyetki, and I believe he's had the burger, shakshuka, and fried chicken sandwich, all of which he swears by. We've brought many weekend guests there who have sampled far more on the menu, and no one has ever had a negative thing to say. A very special place, wonderful to have in Ghent, run by very kind and food obsessed people who know how to make you feel welcome and send you away very happy after a delicious meal.

Yelp
Bartlett House is a great place if you want a quality experience - service to taste. It was our second annual visit here, and the experience was second to none. We highly recommend their Mac and cheese, as well as their burger. So many other great choices as well.

Yelp
This place is great! The food is wonderful. The decor is cozy. We had 4 red muffins made with their homemade jam. Their blueberry rose muffins were to die for. The customer service is great. There is outdoor picnic tables to sit outside and enjoy their lovely flowers.

Yelp
I can't say enough about this restaurant!! Not only is it a beautifully restored building with a very pretty Atmosphere and great food/coffee, but they also have the BEST customer service! To say the staff is wonderful is such an understatement!!...I dined here this past weekend and when I got home (after A 3 hour drive) I realized I left my purse there! I was so upset and tried to contact them via phone, email and IG but they were closed. The mgr (katie) called me after hours and told me they found my purse and since I lived far she said they would Ship it to me. I even offered to pay for shipping, but she said they would pay for it. I also had other staff members follow up and email/Message me on IG to follow up. I mean they went above and beyond and I'm SO grateful!! THANK YOU KATIE! Aside from this amazing experience, their food is high quality and totally delicious! No exaggeration, It's probably one of the top burgers I've ever had with the best crispy shoe string fries. My husband and I stopped in here last year on my way to go camping and we loved the burger so much, we drove a couple hours back up here to have it again and it did not disappoint! Their bakery is also great with a nice variety of delicious pastries we picked up for our drive home. Also If you like specialty coffees, you're in luck. Ive tried their lavender latte, turmeric latte and blueberry latte and they were all excellent. We sat on the porch, which was really pretty and they also have a few tables below on their yard. I'm definitely a Customer for life. If you're in the area you have to stop by for sure!!! I Can't wait to go back!

Lael L.

Yelp
Not enough menu selections, and what there is is way overpriced. The bakery items, however, are to die for. Staff is pleasant. Expect really long lines for the bakery on weekends.

Yelp
My friend and I happened by this scenic spot and regretted not getting a few more pieces for our to go box. We tried: ham and cheese croissant goat cheese danish pistacchio croissant cc cookie We loved all. The garden was beautiful and there is outdoor dining on the deck. Ambience and service were exceptional.

Yelp
Good food! Little pricy. They did give me the wrong order at first, after waiting a while, but they fixed it and had a smile on their faces the whole time. Will be back!

Yelp
I brought my parents and brother to Bartlett House for a special birthday dinner. We had been meaning to visit for brunch, and were delighted to discover that dinner is served Thursday through Saturday evenings. First, some backstory. We've watched this area change dramatically over the last 20 years. For better or for worse, Hudson has become Brooklyn 2.0; great restaurants have popped up that source from local family farms and cater to the weekender/ AirBnB crowds. We're big fans of Local 111 in Philmont and Swoon in Hudson, and expected Bartlett House to perform on the same level (or better, if we dared dream). Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing; we'll drive the extra 15 minutes and stick to Local 111 for special occasions upstate. Some of the sticking points: - $5 charge for bread and butter. Yeah. - Only one vegetarian entree (pasta with nettle pesto), which wasn't particularly noteworthy in flavor and the pasta was so undercooked it was almost crunchy - Not great at accommodating dietary restrictions. I have a garlic intolerance, so I asked if the pasta sauce could be made without garlic. The waiter asked the chef, who said he could, but when it arrived there was plenty of sliced garlic in the nettle sauce. I picked around them, but would worry for those with more serious allergies. - Bizarre "goods of the world" for purchase, mostly made in China and Japan, none especially unique; why not keep with the local theme and highlight some of the many local artists in the Hudson Valley? One highlight of an otherwise underwhelming dinner were the fried green tomatoes, which were heavenly ($11 for two slices, but worth it to share). The coconut curry fish was also a hit with my family. We had a charming waiter, though he was new to the area and clearly not trained on the history of the establishment or building. Bartlett House has a pretty cool backstory, but we had to Google it!

Yelp
We've picked up dessert here in the past but today was the first time we actually sat down to eat a meal. This place is stupid good. No, really, it is! By far the best breakfast I've had in my entire life, anywhere in the world. I feel like shedding a tear it's that good. Food Network should do a tapping here...Ina Garten should drive up from the Hampton's kind of good...

OMG everything here is amazing and about the coolest spot ever. Wish there was one near where I live (and every place I visit!) In the summer there's some outdoor seating... not sure how it will be in the cold weather...

Yelp
It's the perfect go to in Ghent! Great coffee and good pastries. Just brought dinners back!

Yelp
A worthwhile and well designed stop for bistro fare between VT and NY. Sweet or savory, the menu offers just enough variety to please a family who might at first miss an american style children's menu, but then appreciate the European influence of refined restraint. Speaking of restraInt, we refrained from indulging in any of them, but oggled over some mouth watering pastries behind the display. An added perk of this place is the wall to ceiling bookshelf - the "Humans of New York" book occupied the children long enough for a civilized meal with my husband.

Yelp
Was driving through and saw this cute cafe so I stopped for some lunch. Got the quesadilla and it is amazing. Staff was super friendly and the whole property is immaculate. Highly recommend

Yelp
If you're looking for delicious food and superb service in a sublime setting somewhat off the beaten path, I strongly recommend paying a visit to Bartlett House. I recently enjoyed a fantastic lunch on the porch overlooking the small but beautiful flower garden in Ghent's blink-or-you'll-miss-it downtown. The kind and attentive waiter (Nick?) made this the perfect dining experience. I was glad to have solicited his food and drink suggestions; everything he recommended was top-notch. I hope to be able to return before too long. Btw, though I'd eaten too much to take advantage, I did take a stroll along the pastry display. I'd recommend leaving room for something sweet.

Yelp
We picked up some goodies from the bakery. Standout was the plain croissant and the homemade jam and baguette, absolutely delicious. I will say the matcha latte was terrible but with these croissants I won't complain.

Yelp
Pre-pandemic I loved Bartlett House, so I imagine they probably have had trouble bouncing back, but I was disappointed after my most recent visit. Staffing is probably an issue, like at most restaurants right now, so I can understand why midweek they've switched to a more casual model where you go to the register to order your food and it comes out in carryout containers. But I think it would be nice if they would tell you what to expect when you arrive. It's underwhelming to pay $13 for a breakfast sandwich and have it come out gracelessly put together and wrapped in foil if you're not expecting it. We also had to ask for napkins and silverware and it took them some time to even find them? I could have forgiven the awkwardness of the experience if the flavors were outstanding, but both of our meals were just okay. I think they are a creative and well-intentioned crew, so hopefully they're able to get back to where they were before.

Yelp
What a treat to see this venue back in business, and with such a team of pros behind the scenes. Huge kudos for the exceptional renovation, which has transformed a long-shuttered building into a gorgeous, vintage-inspired French bistro, complete with gleaming wood floors and furniture, tile walls, charming artwork, and a gorgeous coffee bar and pastry case. I haven't tried the cooked entrees yet (hope to soon), but the pastry, coffee, and iced tea have been uniformly excellent. My favorite: the pear and rosewater muffin, which is crisp and chewy on the outside and light and tender on the inside. The staff has always been friendly and helpful when I've visited -- a nice change from some of the French-style bakeries in Hudson and the Berkshires that leave a lot to be desired in the attitude department. My suggestion: pay a visit before the weather turns cold, on a day when you've got time to spare. Pull up a chair on the porch and have a great, relaxing meal by yourself or with a friend. And check out Bartlett House's Instagram on days when you're not in town, to keep the tasty memories flowing.

Yelp
Top quality continental-inspired cuisine and bakery makes for excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner in a relaxed, literate atmosphere (decorated with bookshelves!). Not cheap, but how could it be? Everything is top quality and the staff is attentive and knowledgeable. Definitely pick up some wonderful pastries and breads on your way out. The baguette is beautifully done, and it's harder to do these right than you might expect!

Yelp
What a great find! I came across Bartlett House on Instagram and was intrigued by their charming decor and delicious looking pastries. I ended up having breakfast before getting here, but I would have gotten the green shakshuka for sure...looked amazing. Instead we got a sticky bun and cookie to go with a matcha latte and a chai latte to enjoy out on the patio. Can't wait to come back for brunch! The parking lot can get a little crazy, just be on the lookout for people backing up (we witnessed a little fender bender)
