SF Nepalese Restaurant Dancing Yak Expanding With Tapas in the Mission - Eater SF

"At 2400 Folsom Street, the former home of neighborhood German restaurant Schmidt’s, Basnet will open another Nepalese restaurant, to be called Base Camp and to focus on Nepalese small plates. Base Camp will be a partnership between Basnet and chef Tara Ghimire, and current Dancing Yak chefs Indra Khanal and Sunita Bohora will develop its menu, too. Base Camp’s menu will be a departure from Dancing Yak’s, with an emphasis on smaller shared plates and no cocktails, just beer and wine." - Caleb Pershan

Iconic Silicon Valley Cake Shop Will Close After Nearly 40 Years - Eater SF

"Base Camp, a Nepali tapas spot, will open in November at the former site of Schmidt's German restaurant. It is operated by the Nepali-born siblings behind Dancing Yak and will feature a menu rich in Tibetan street foods. Food: 3/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Overall: Food is standard fare The extended review… Food: Goat curry - 3/5 - Pretty standard fare. Definitely one of the few places you can find goat. Garlic Naan - 3/5 - Standard fare. Service: 3/5 - Standard service. Ambiance: 4/5 - They had some nice outdoor seating as well as in door.

Holding my stomach thinking of the proper deliciousness that has just transpired. Every single dish was a pleasure! — pork momos, garlic naan, goat curry, chow mein, kale chaat.

A perfect dining experience for our anniversary. We had the pork momos, pork chow mein, goat curry, garlic naan, and a dessert I can’t remember. Everything was so amazing we couldn’t decide which item was our favourite. My husband is from the UK so he is a curry connoisseur. This was still probably the best curry we ever had!

Butter chicken - my favorite dish here, perfectly balanced spices and flavors. Most butter chicken I’ve eaten around the area is just really orange which can fool you into thinking it’s packed with flavor, until you eat it and realize it’s all just food color. Also probably the first one I’ve had here in a while that wasn’t crazy sweet like they all end up being at restaurants. Rich, creamy and flavorful. 10/10 Garlic naan - soft and fluffy, could use a bit more garlic because you can just never have too much. 8/10 Pork ribs - falls right off the bone, cooked to perfection, love the gravy. It came with tingmo which is a steamed bread - also delicious. 9/10 beautiful surprise of a place. Loved the food. Would definitely eat from here again. Update- took a star off, got takeout another time and the food didn’t taste nearly as good. We got butter chicken, naan, rice again and also decided to try the pork momos. Didn’t enjoy them much. The whole meal was 6/10

Great Nepali food with a pretty interior. Reccomend garlic naan, pumpkin curry, veg momo, mango lassi.

My first Nepali restaurant experience. Very unique, compared to the food I know, it's similar to Indian cuisine, but with a twist. Food ordered: Naan, Goat curry, Pork rib curry. + (10/10) The naan was so buttery, the exterior was crispy and the interior was a little fluffy yet still had structure. + (9/10)Goat curry was pretty good. The meat was very tender but not falling apart. It's also not too funky, which I like. + (7.5/10) I like the steamed bun that came with the pork rib curry more than the ribs themselves. + Service was very good, very tentative, offered to pack my leftovers. - The front door sometimes won't close, so the cold air from outside blew through was not something I enjoyed.

My friend and I came here for a Friday night out and was blown awy. Both the pork and chicken Momo's were absolutely delightful, we shared the lamb matar, and ended with the caramel flan. Highly recommend this place for an Indian Nepalese fusion food.

You need to run not walk to this restaurant! One of my new favourite spots in SF. Everything on the menu was perfection. I've never had Nepalese food but all the flavours popped. From the different spices and textures, everyone was moaning with every bite. We made a reservation, went in a big group, ordered family style, and licked the plates clean. The onion fritters were super crispy. Be warned the cauliflower plate is actually spicy. The butter chicken was some of the best I've had. But the star of the show was the Kale Chaat. Very friendly staff, extremely reasonable prices. Big portion sizes. You will not leave disappointed from this place.

Yelp
Base Camp is a great choice for any occasion. It's where I take parents and friends when they visit town for special occasions, or just to treat myself on a casual night. The menu has a great range of small bites (the Momos are the best i've ever had, and the Kale Chaat is really special) and the curries and chow mien dishes are all great too-- the Shrimp Cashew Curry and Paneer Ra Matar are my go-to's! My partner is vegan and he is able to have dairy free modifications to every dish. (except Butter Chicken), which is really nice, so he doesn't feel constrained to explore the menu. The customer service couldn't be better, and the owner's commitment to making the dishes authentic to regions all over Nepal is really special. There are a few new dishes that I noticed on the menu this week, so I tried the Aloo Cauliflower and it's a new favorite!

Yelp
Base Camp was a delicious culinary journey of both new and familiar flavors. We didnt have a reservation but they were accomodating and sat us outside and turned on the heater for us. They have beer and wine available. We ordered a few items to sample and share. The cauliflower app was incredibly spicy. Possibly a little too spicy as our mouths were on fire but we still ate them all. The flavor was addicting. Would have appreciated a cooling dip for these to alleviate the spice. These are goood just beware. The tangy spicy ribs were tender, delicious, fall off the bone 10/10. Currently craving this dish again as I write this. The bread that was served with these was so unique and pillowy soft. It was perfect to soak up the sauce and help with the spice level of the first app. Finally the chicken chow mein was a solid take on the classic dish. Very flavorful, fresh, and full of life with peas and green onions. Super tasty. I will definitely be returning hopefully with a reservation and trying some more items.

Yelp
Amazing Nepalese food. Fun place for a group of 4-6 so you can share more plates. The standouts were the octopus appetizer, butter chicken, paneer, and fish curry. I'd recommend getting a side of garlic naan so you can mop up all the comforting goodness. Misses for me were the breaded cauliflower (small portion size, and felt the cauliflower to bread ratio was off) and momos (dry). Ambiance: moody classic. Service was extremely warm and attentive. Value was excellent for SF. Came out to be $30 per person without drinks!

Yelp
Hit all the right spots taste wise, ambience wise and price point wise (2 dishes+ side under $50 before taxes and tip). Chicken chow mein was really spicy (but we loved it). Garlic naan went well with the mild butter chicken (toddler enjoyed it as well). We had leftovers as well so that was awesome. One star off only because the wait time, both to be seated and for the food was longer than we had anticipated (we visited around 7pm) and there was not really a space in the restroom if you visit with a little one and need to change a diaper. Plus points however for having feminine hygiene products in the bathroom. Not that you go to a restaurant for this but it felt like a very thoughtful touch.

Yelp
Great service! The place is clean and decently spacious! The food was amazing :) The inside is super cute, the parking isn't that bad for SF! Great naan and butter chicken, decent prices!

Yelp
I recently went to Base Camp with my beloved. Base Camp serves up Nepali cuisine. We both loved the ambiance here and friendly service to boot. Plenty of vegan options on the menu. Many items were clearly labeled vegan while other items could be made vegan upon request. We started with the vegetable momos as an appetizer. Very good and filled with various veggies. The momos were served with a roasted tomato and soybean sauce. For our main course we split the Organic Pumpkin Curry, brown rice, garlic naan, and a organic tofu veggie chow mein. Everything was delectable. Nice addition to the area. Price was a bit costly yet well worth it for the occasional splurge. We will be back!

Yelp
I loved the butter chicken. The pieces of chicken were big and meaty. Curry was right enough thickness and not watery. Also loved that it wasn't too spicy but flavorful. The best part was that they had a sour beer (Victory Sour) option on the drink menu.

Yelp
We're always right around Base Camp but had never tried it out. Once we got there, we were very excited given the reviews, the menu and the great smells. On the service front we had both a very attentive server, but then another person taking plates away that seemed like they were rushing us. They weren't close to closing and it wasn't so packed that they needed to turn the tables right away. It just left a weird footnote on the whole evening. The momos were just missing "It." The flavors weren't quite there, and the texture was a bit overdone. The Paneer was very bland but the chow mein was very delicious. Also, the Kale chaat is a must try because its different and yet very familiar. All in all, it could have just been an off day but there's a few gems on the menu that are worth the trip.

Yelp
I was a little nostalgic to see the space that used to be Schmidt's, but I'm always happy to see more business in this corner of the Mission. No wait at noon on a Friday. One server, friendly, attentive. By the time we left around 1:15 there were 3-4 other small groups having lunch. $60 total including tax/tip for lunch for two. Very reasonable. Base Camp has delicious, authentic, *spicy* food! Highly recommend. * Pork Belly Bhutwa ($13) - 4.5 stars Packed with flavor, and the cold tomato/pepper sauce as a nice contrast. The meat is not as soft/buttery as pork belly might be in a Chinese dish, but I liked the slightly more crisp version, which was still soft on the inside. * Tangy Spicy Ribs ($15) - 4 stars I'd call this medium to strong spicy. Also fantastic, full of flavor. The ribs, again, a little harder, not falling-off-the-bone, but still good in its own right. Knocked down a half star because the bone breaks off into small, hard, sharp shards - I bit right into one, and another got wedged between two teeth. * Chow Mein Pork ($18) - 4.5 stars I usually like my noodles a little overcooked and soft, but this was quite chewy, yet it worked with the dry sauce, and I liked the little pieces of broccoli, fresh scallions, and cooked peanuts (or were those the crunchy snap peas?). The pork was crispy the way al pastor might be - a bit chewy, but full of flavor.

Yelp
Food is consistently amazing 5/5. Eggplant curry and garlic naan are really good, prices are medium high, about what you can expect from the area. The wait can be very long depending on the time. Would be a solid 5/5 except every time I sit outside, service is really really slow. Waiting 5-10 min just to have a waiter come check on us, need to walk inside to get the check. Very uncomfortable dining service so I recommend eating inside if possible.

Yelp
This spot always hits! Perfect for a big group or small, they have something for everyone. We always start with samosas and momos(dumpling like appetizers). I had the butter chicken with garlic naan. So creamy and delicious. The servers are friendly and quick. Will be coming back for dine in and take out.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty solid food. Average service. Really liked the pork belly bhutwa. Cashew curry was good, but just tastes like a usual curry. Dumplings dish was 4 pieces, but didn't have a wow factor. Ambiance was very homey and well furnished definitely a unique style. I went on a weekday evening booked a reservation and it was very busy.
google avatar

Yelp
We ate here on May 31. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The place is small which made for an intimate setting, and the service was friendly and attentive. It was very busy so make sure you get reservations. Try the food family style so you can get a taste of everything.

Yelp
10/10 experience all around!! This was my first time trying Nepalese food and it's a MUST stop for me whenever I'm in the city now. I'm still dreaming about the chow mein and the FLAVORS of each dish are mind blowing. Service was 10/10. Each dish was beautifully presented, explained and served. She even topped us off after we drank through our entire sparkling rose. So generous and naturally hospitable. We were able to walk in on a Wednesday night without a reservation and got seated right away.

Yelp
The spicy tangy ribs fall right off the bone, the sauce and soft bread is such a wonderful palette pair. My husband and I really enjoyed the butter chicken and chowmein. The butter chicken is creamy and flavourful- I highly recommend it. The chowmein was different in that us was more chopped up and in pieces. Must have appetizer- the watermelon feta salad is bomb! Great refresher for palette cleansing- paired nicely with all the meat and curry dishes we were eating.

Yelp
This is my second time at base camp and glad I came back to try some new items! Overall I'd give basecamp a 3.75- not a place I'd jump to come back to, but won't say no if someone else wants to go Ambiance: decent for date night. Not good for large groups. Cute decor but nothing fancy. Dishes are plated well. Service: wait staff was attentive even though it was a really busy Friday night. Nothing notable or exceptional but nothing bad. I would definitely order again: Kale chaat, pork belly, butter chicken, naan The cauliflower was too spicy for me to enjoy but my friends liked it! Maybe order again: samosas, Momo, chow mein, cashew curry. There isn't anything bad about the dishes. Just nothing that really stood out. The cashew curry is unique and would probably recommend trying it once.

Yelp
Outstanding!! A colleague recommended Base Camp prior to my San Fran trip and I was very excited about food from Nepal. Fresh, bright flavors accompanied attentive, friendly service. The version of chaat (made with kale) was crunchy, sweet, savory and had that umami situation that has me now salivating weeks after consumption. Watermelon salad-another light and refreshing dish that would bring me back in a heartbeat. Momos (dumplings) were perfectly bite-sized and served with an addictive curry sauce. Our side of naan was used for sucking up every last remnant of said curry. We mainly stayed with small plates/appetizers and got full too quickly. Many other things on the menu still need sampling. Farm to table, fresh/local ingredients with vegan, gluten free and other dietary needs are supported here. I would be a regular if I lived nearby and this will be one of my first stops next time I'm in SF.

Yelp
My friend from New York says this is the best restaurant she's been to in SF! My favorite dishes here: * Kale Chaat - sooo crispy and smothered in a tangy yogurt tamarind sauce, i've never had anything quite like it. i can't recommend this enough. * Samosas - i'm usually not a samosa person but the ones here are excellent, with a thick buttery crust that isn't too greasy. comes not only with mint and tamarind chutneys but on a bed of chickpeas. * Spicy cauliflower - the portion is kind of small but they're actually very spicy * Chow mein - this is super different from the typical Chinese version! it's very saucy and is therefore tastier. * Garlic naan - crisp on the outside, soft on the inside * Mango lassi - thick and not too sweet * Eggplant curry - very smoky and rich All the other vegetarian curries are tasty but feel very "healthy" to me so not as rich as a typical curry at an Indian place. I wish they were a little heartier (other than the eggplant curry which is perfect). My friend got the butter chicken and says the sauce is pretty much the same as at Dancing Yak but the meat is a little less grilled-tasting. I also prefer the momos at Dancing Yak a little more but maybe just because the sauce is spicier there. The interior is super cozy and beautiful, and the servers are nice. Great place for a date night or just a chill dinner with friends!
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
I'm not hugely knowledgeable about Nepalese food, to me it seems like a mix between Chinese and Indian food, leaning more Indian. The food was good but nothing to call home about, all in all unremarkable, but with a good ambiance and not overly pricey. I don't think there would be any particular reason to pick this place over some of the better Indian restaurants in the city, but perfectly acceptable place to grab dinner in the area.

Yelp
Sad to write a middle of the road review for a restaurant others have clearly loved but here goes - We walked in on the earlier end of the dinner service. The restaurant was empty except for two large tables. Unfortunately, they said every table in the place was reserved, but we could sit outside. Not a problem! We went outside, looked over the menu. The waiter comes to give us some recommendations and we ordered an appetizer while still deliberating. Some ten minutes goes by without the waiter returning so I stand up and walk inside to tell them we're ready to order. They come out and we make out order. Asked about the appetizer and they check - it wasn't put in the system. So we re-order that. Food starts coming, first we get the tangy and spicy ribs which are neither tangy nor spicy but instead are bland. 1/5 but rescued a point because I think they gave us an extra since they noticed we had a party of three - 2/5 Then we get the onion fritter and the pork momo. The fritter is tasty - hard to go wrong with fried food, right? And the tamarind and mint sauces are great with it - 4/5 The pork momo is pretty fun to look at, red dumpling skin with orange sauce, but the flavor is just alright. Felt like it could've used some more seasoning - 3/5 We waited a long time for the curries to come after finishing our apps, but I think they probably got held up by the big tables that were there before us. Finally a few more tables start to be seated outside and they turn on the outdoor music. At last the curries come, but wait -- neither of these seem to be the ones we ordered. Fortunately we didn't start eating them. But we sat there for a moment unsure, and then my partner got up and walked inside to tell them - they quickly came out and took them away to give to a different table and brought our correct curries instead, which they fortunately had made. We got the cashew curry with paneer and the goat curry with tumeric rice and garlic naan. The rice and naan were actually pretty good I thought - 4/5, but the same cannot be said for the curry. The cashew curry was a sad 2/5, very little flavor or spice and pretty watery. The goat curry was a bit better, maybe 3/5. Overall, having been recommended this place and reading good reviews, it was disappointing to have a subpar experience, especially to the tune of $40 per person. I wonder if most people coming here have never had Nepali food before and are more dazzled by the idea than the quality of food they are eating. I'm afraid to say I won't be coming here again and would recommend against it.

Yelp
This place is awesome and very popular. It's not that big inside so you might have to wait for a table if you're dining in. I recommend ordering the ribs here. The sauce they were in is so delicious and the meat just falls right off the bone! It also came with a steamed bun which was delicious as well!

Yelp
The momos. I'm obsessed -- so much so I found frozen versions from online grocer :) great vibe, delicious food

Yelp
Service 5/5 Ambiance 4/5 Food 4/5 First time having Nepalese food and it was great. Lots of flavor and possibly a little salty for my liking but spices were very flavorful, however nothing super memorable. Table arrangement felt a little off as our table felt like it was in the center and very exposed to the entrance but we had a late meal so not too much in and out traffic. Portions are generous. Definitely a spot to check out if you have a hit list for diverse cuisines.
google avatar

Vy T.

Yelp
Came here for the momo and ended up liking other dishes more. Binis momos are still the top in my Other dishes that we really liked - Kale Chaat: not the most healthy dish but it's ok to indulge once in a while. The blend of yogurt and sweet tamarin hit the spot - Chow mein was so smokey, very good

Yelp
AMAZING FOOD. Go here. Please. The service is incredible, the food is great, and I'm really into the ambiance here. What I really enjoy is that the food is really authentic and delicious! You've got to get the curry and the chow mein it's BEYOND YOUR IMAGINATION GOOD! It's really great because you just feel the love in the food and It makes you feel as if you're in Nepal (not really, but it's the thought that matters) Anyways, support local!

Yelp
This places is HOT & BUSY. I took a star because it took some time to get a table. I wish I could only take 1/2 a star, but the food was SOOO GOOD! & the owner was very sweet and has passion for her food/ restaurant. This place has such a beautiful story behind it. Great place to go to, but get there EARLY or make a reservation because you might be waiting for 30 mins or more. ( I went on a Wednesday night and it was BUSY)
google avatar

Trisha V.

Yelp
Delicious eats! I was super pleased with our meal here and would definitely come again. All of our dishes were flavorful and came out hot. The samosa trio was so good, the veggie was the definite winner. It wasn't busy at all on a Sunday, lots of street parking around the area too. Service was great and thinking about the next time I return to try new menu items!
google avatar

Tim G.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place, and really enjoy every time I visit. I think I've tried just about every dish here and none of them have been duds. If I was to only eat here one last time (it saddens me to think this) I would probably get the pork momos with some garlic naan to soak up the extra sauce, and the shrimp chow mein. I don't even like lamb but the lamb dishes are also dynamite. Love the staff here, and especially enjoy the playlist they use, which I noticed features one of my favorite artists, Aaron Taylor! The prices are reasonable and the decor and ambiance are both terrific! I always bring visitors here and Base Camp has never let me down.

Yelp
Ambience 5/5 Service 5/5 Food 4/5 Great neighborhood spot with delicious food and a homey ambience. Took one star off because the portions are small (it's giving tapas...). Better to come with a group so you can try a variety of things. We loved the butter chicken, shrimp chow menu, and octopus (appetizer). It fills up for dinner on the weekends so I would make a reservation to be safe!

Yelp
Tldr: wonderful exploration into Nepali cuisine for the right price! First time ever trying Nepali food, super tasty experience! We were a party of 2 walk in on Friday around 6:45pm. It quickly got busy, staff were nice and attentive. Place got busy quick! I believe they prefer reservation but they also do walk ins! One of my favorite dishes was the salad! It was so unique and different, but surprisingly delicious, super worth trying! One of the other dishes we got was a traditional dish (I forgot the name but it's in the pictures). That one was just okay, a little dry for my taste. Overall would recommend for Nepali cuisine!

Yelp
I have been here twice now. The first time was a dine-in experience and the second was a to-go order. This review is mainly based off my dine-in experience. We went on a Sunday night (6:30pm) with no reservation and the restaurant was packed. We were told it was going to be an hour wait so we put our names down and headed to Shotwell's bar for a game of darts. At 7:15 we got a text saying our table was ready so we headed over. To drink, I had the blueberry tea. It was a soothing tea that was sweet and refreshing. We started out with the onion fritters, fried chicken & chicken momos. We all loved the sauces from the onion fritters and dipped our fried chicken into them. I personally wouldn't get the onion fritters again, but they were great to try! The fried chicken was juicy and tender a little spiced. We all enjoyed the chicken momos (basically dumplings). The butter chicken was delicious and I loved putting the curry onto the fried chicken as well. Basically, the fried chicken goes with everything! Overall, the service was great, clean bathrooms, but since it is so packed, it can get a little loud with all the people! I would definitely go back again.

Yelp
Base Camp was an amazing find in the mission. I hadnt had nepalese food prior to coming here but I'm a big fan of curry so absolutely had to try it. A friend and I ordered a Cashew Chicken Curry and that was a pleasant surprise. You get a slight nuttiness and sweetness from it that is unique to the curry here from other cultures' curries. It was delicious paired with the Garlic Naan we ordered. The Momos were good and definitely unique but I didnt think they were that special given the price. Would have rather just ordered another entree. We also ordered a beef chow mein which has a slight twist in nepalese spices and flavor. That was really good too. The inside and decor are nice and the vibes are great. Service is good as well. Definitely index heavier on trying entrees if you come

Yelp
My friend and I decided to checkout Base Camp, a Nepalese restaurant in the Mission. We heard it is run by the same owners as Dancing Yak, which piqued our interest. The interiors were beautifully decorated and we were sat at the booth. Our order comprised of Pork Momos, pork belly appetizers, Fish curry, and Garlic Naan. The star of the show was definitely the fish curry, a harmonious blend of spices that had the right amount of spicy kick. The experience was nearly flawless, except for a super odd end... When the bill arrived, our waiter presented a bowl of seeds, which came with a spoon. Assuming it was a snack, we each put a small spoonful in our mouths. Oh man, it tasted quite gross and I'm so perplexed what the seeds were actually meant for. If anyone knows.... Please let me know. A bit of a strange finish to an otherwise tasty meal.

Yelp
The watermelon salad was a bed of greens with some watermelon and feta. The chow main was good but too pricey. Overall the place had great service but not worth the cost

Yelp
Rodent infestation alert! We saw a group of rats running around the cash register near the kitchen here! Not just one, but at least 4 and were super grossed out. This is a huge health hazard and i'm grateful i didn't get sick! Just saw the health score and i see a scary conditional signoff Standard not met: No insects, rodents, birds or nonservice animals Standard not met: Premises; personal/cleaning items; vermin proofing We chose this place as a birthday dinner for a friend because we got takeout the previous week and loved the food. We were so embarrassed when this happened! When we brought it up to our server, he went to check, didn't see them because they ran away. After that he shrugged and did NOTHING. No apology, no courtsey of offering to comp something from our bill. Zero f*s given I'm so sad to be writing this because the food is actually delicious. From the momos, to lamb keema to chowmein, all super flavorful and authentic. I was excited for base camp to be one of my go-to restaurants but I will make sure to alert everyone i know about this

Yelp
If you are coming here on a Friday or Saturday night, I'd come prepared to wait. But the food doesn't disappoint! We came on a busy night with a reservation but were still seated about an hour after arriving. Luckily we were able to put in our orders while we were still seated in the waiting area, but our food did still take a while to arrive after we got a table. Small note, we did end up getting 2 tables of different shapes which made it a little difficult to place the dishes (only noticed this since we ordered family style & had to keep rearranging)! All around, we enjoyed the food! We were expecting a little more texture and flavor from the veggie momos, but the tofu chow mein definitely impressed the whole group! The mushroom chili was another favorite, I'd highly recommend it if you like spice.

Yelp
Incredible service overall. We got a reservation at 6:30pm, and I really recommend getting a reservation because it's easy to do and they seat you right away. The waitress was warm and inviting and we asked her what were there signature dishes because this was our first time we've ever been to a Nepali cuisine (correct me if I'm wrong) She was incredibly warm and polite and was happy to explain it to us. We had the butter chicken with garlic naan bread. Only thing I noticed was they didn't include as much chicken in the butter chicken for 20 dollars they were kinda hard to find in there. We also got the chicken momo and it was like a flavor bomb! The service was spot on and they were very insightful and took away our plates and filled our waters without us asking. Very respectful business, best customer service I've had in a very long time. Check it out if you're craving something new and interesting!

Yelp
You must add Base Camp to your list of restaurants to visit in SF. First off, the price and quality of the food were great. Plus, the service was solid. To start, we ordered the blackberry rooibos tea that smelled really fruity, but didn't taste as fruity as we expected. No big deal though, it was still a solid drink. As for the food, we got a bunch of dishes to share including spicy cauliflower, eggplant curry, lamb curry, basmati rice, and naan. The spicy cauliflower was bomb - it had an amazing breading and just the right amount of spice. The lamb curry was also super tasty - the flavors were on point and the meat tasted fresh. The only bummer was the eggplant curry - it was kinda bland and had a consistency like baby food. But hey, you can't win 'em all, right? Oh, and the naan was legit. They give you six good-sized pieces, and they're so fluffy. If I had to do it over, I'd probably get one curry and another big dish, so that there was more variety in food textures. Overall, Base Camp is a great spot to grab some killer Nepalese food without breaking the bank. The food rocks, the service is on point, and the vibe is just right. Check it out!

Yelp
As a long time mission district resident I've always been very curious about this place. It's very beautiful, super inviting and has a great interior. The service was fabulous and we were given a seat on a busy Thursday evening even though we hadn't made a reservation. My friend and I ordered the cashew curry, with rice and naan, the daal and pork belly. I asked for no cilantro and they put it on every dish (booo), the food was under salted and under spiced while my friend experienced the pork belly as being way too spicy and not flavorful enough. I won't be coming back, but I don't regret stepping inside.

Yelp
This was my first time here and this was so good! Better than I expected. It was quite busy for a weekday. Service was good. They did not take forever despite how busy they were. Each dish we got was really good. We made noodles, butter chicken, dumplings and fried chicken. And buttery naans. So good! I'll def will be back. 4.5/5

Yelp
This place is such a hole in the wall, it's located in the Mission district away from all the hustle and bustle of Valencia street. I've never tried Nepali cuisine before and wow it was so so delicious. We ordered the fried chicken, chicken momo, onion fritters, butter chicken, and garlic naan. I was blown away by all the dishes that we ordered, the quality of food and it was all very filling. The dish that surprised me was the onion fritters since it came with the sides of two sauces. The contrast from the sweet/bitterness of the onion with the sweetness of the sauce is so good. The restaurant itself is not too big, so on busy nights.. expect a wait but the wait it worth it! The staff was so friendly and attentive, the food came out quickly as well. I definitely recommend this place for groups and date nights. I am looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
The ambiance here is amazing! I love the decor and bright vibes. Food is hit or miss--I loved the kale chaat, cashew curry, and tofu chow mein. The momos, spicy cauliflower, and paneer skewers were just okay. The paneer skewers were actually quite a rip off, it came with two TINY skewers with 2 pieces of paneer each. I also think a cocktail menu would be nice and go well with the ambiance.

Yelp
The ambiance and decoration of this place is so inviting, warm, and cozy. It definitely makes you want to go in, sit down and order everything. The service staff is also super kind, accommodating and friendly. The food standout by far was the garlic naan. It's up there for the best naan I've ever had. Portion size phenomenal, taste on point, enough garlic where you know what you ordered and are happy but not too much where vampires run away. Sadly the rest of the food was very okay. No complaints but it all came out very much on the sweeter side. Perhaps we should've asked for spicy but it was across the board on everything we ordered. Dal Makhani & Kale Chaat. Def willing to give it another try by varying what is ordered and upping the spice but there are other places that hit the spot that I'd rather return to first.

Yelp
My party of 4 made a reservation for Saturday dinner at 7:15pm and the place was already packed when we got there, so we had to wait another 10 minutes before we got seated. Our table was at the very front of the restaurant where people entering and exiting the restaurant would periodically run into the people sitting on the outside edge of our table. It wasn't the biggest deal, but I did wish that we were seated somewhere with less foot traffic for a better experience overall. The service was quick right when we were seated - staff members would check-in periodically and refill our waters timely. However, the food did come out a bit slow. We got 2 appetizers and 3 main dishes to share. The curries do not automatically come with rice or naan, so you have to order them additionally. All the dishes we got were flavorful and seasoned well. My favorite would probably be the goat curry as it was of a thinner consistency which didn't make it feel heavy, and the meat was super tender without tasty too gamey (which I find can often happen with goat dishes). Overall, the space inside felt nice and comfortable, and I'd definitely recommend making a reservation to secure a spot. They also provided mints and herb mixture as breath freshness and a palette cleanser for after your meal, which was fun to try.

Yelp
Base Camp is your destination if you're hunting for delicious Nepalese food. Our culinary journey through the Himalayan foothills was nothing short of delightful! The butter chicken was silky, rich, and perfectly spiced - an ode to the classic recipe with a distinct Nepalese flair. And let's talk about the pork Chow Mein - a harmonious blend of flavors, making each bite memorable. One word of advice: make a reservation! We were pretty surprised to see how bustling this place was on a Sunday night. It's a testament to the quality of the food and the atmosphere they've curated. We are looking forward to our next visit!

Yelp
This place has Nepalese food and it was my first time trying. We got a few curries and a few appetizers (see pics for details). The Kale dish was delicious and had so much flavor. Everything was so tasty and flavorful but my favorite was the Butter Chicken. It had such a good flavor to it. Recommend getting the garlic naan on the side :) The service was great as well. The gentleman gave us the recommendations we asked for and was super kind. The place is so cute and I highly recommend this spot. I will definitely return again.

Yelp
I usually do take out and have never sat inside. The to-go service is fine, though there is usually some delay with the online orders. I do like their food and have gone through the menu a few times. The noodles- are ok. I have ordered 2x, and won't do it again. The meat tends to be dried out and tough and the noodles are so so. The spicy cauliflower is awesome. The cashew curry is very good. The butter curry has surpassed the cashew requests. The momos are good. Not my thing but my kids love them. They are very knowledable about food allergens. The only down side is the price point. It is $130 pretty easily for a group of 3.

Yelp
No complaints here! I've never had Nepalese food but was so glad I tried Base Camp. Our table shared the 4 piece pork momo which was paired with a really nice sauce. I appreciated how kind & accommodating the wait staff was to my dairy restriction as they were able to substitute the milk in the Cashew Curry for coconut milk and made the delicious garlic naan dairy free. The menu isn't too diverse - if you don't like curry or noodles, you may have trouble finding something to eat here. If you're willing to try a new cuisine, I highly recommend Base Camp for its authenticity & flavorful food!
