Where to Eat Barbecue in San Diego Right Now

"An Ocean Beach staple since 1991, the restaurant is known for its popular barbecue burrito available in different versions: one lets you choose your own meat, one is made with rib tips, and the third is a riff on a Sloppy Joe with chopped up burnt ends. All come wrapped in a large flour tortilla with coleslaw and beans." - Darlene Horn, Candice Woo, Paolo Bicchieri

BBQ House was the perfect way to kick off our trip to San Diego, and our bartender, Sam, made it even better. She was spunky, fun, and kept the energy high the entire time we were there. Not only did she have great beer recommendations, but she also introduced us to an amazing tequila that we’ll definitely be ordering again. Her enthusiasm and expertise made the experience unforgettable. This spot was the ideal start to our vacation—great drinks, great service, and an atmosphere that made us feel right at home.

From a BBQ savant hailing from Missouri, there are several missteps here. Granted, it is San Diego… the Brisket is not smoked well. Thinly sliced, minimal smoke ring, and small portioned. Biggest fail of them all, the brisket came pre-sauced!! That’s sacrilegious. Mac n Cheese was decent, but, the ribs were chewy and riddled with un rendered fat. Price point not justified for this BBQ

The food here was pretty good, i had the waygu truffle smash burger special and my god was it good. Nice flavor and everything, topped it off with the peach cobbler parfait which was phenomenal. Fries we're a little dry but we did get there a little before closing so overall nicely done ladies and gentlemen

We were sat really quickly, and our orders came out just as quickly! That's not to knock the quality either, both our dishes were some of the best we've had. The cocktail menu was unique, and I think I've found a new favorite lol, only wish I lived closer

Google
Great location for dining in, especially if your in the area! Great food, prices are reasonable, BBQ was good! My only gripe is the vegetarian options are minimal. Lots of beer on tap and the daily small is the ticket! Being in this area, prices are already high, this place keeps them reasonable! The atmosphere is absolutely enjoyable, indoor outdoor experience, with that BBQ home feel, you will not be disappointed with you meal here, especially if you like BBQ.

"Holy cow, y'all! We walked into this place thinking we'd stick out like a redneck at a wine tasting, but boy were we wrong! The food was so good, I'll be serving up a plate of humble pie on my pride platter! That half salad? Gigantic! Like, 'how many heads of lettuce did they sacrifice for this?' gigantic. And the chef? A real sweetheart! I asked for some tweaks and they were like, 'Girl, I gotchu!' Like, they actually got me. My waitress, Alexandria B, was the real MVP! She hooked me up with the extra goodies I needed and gave me the biggest smile. Don't tell my hubby, but she made me feel like we were on our first date again... minus the awkward small talk and overwhelming fear of rejection 😂. The kiddos devoured the onion rings and fries like they were fresh out of my own kitchen (wink). If the owners see this, give Alexandria a raise... and a trophy... and a parade in her honor! She's the real deal! Ask for her by name and get ready for a culinary dream come true... or at least a good laugh and a full belly 🤣."

We loved the atmosphere. Sitting on patio just cool enough to have the heater on. Service was pretty good. Good choices of beers. Few signature cocktails. Wife had the Creamsicle, said it was more close to orange juice. I got the Buenaveza Mexican Lager. They salted the rim per my request (the best way to drink Mexican lager). Beer was good. Had nice fresh taste. Food came out quickly. Ordered 2 meat combo with onion rings and bourbon bacon burger with fries. All summed up with one word, underwhelming. The brisket and ribs had zero smoke flavor and the burger was a frozen patty with no seasoning. Seriously there was no love in the food. For 90 bucks w/tip I expected a lot better.

Came here after the beach, food was incredible. Right when you walk in the vibe was amazing !! Full bar and yummy drinks with TVs all over. We shared the BBQ brisket Nachos. My wife got the chicken and I got the bbq brisket sandwich. I had a bite of the chicken it was super yummy. The sandwich was my favorite item on the menu !! Highly recommend it. We each got a BBQ beef rib. So tender each item. Then we got our desserts it was yummy. Red velvet fired Oreo definitely hits ! Our waiter Destin was great in recommending the items! Can’t wait to come back !

Yelp
Stopped in today with the kiddos during summer break and we were so impressed. We ordered the wings and my youngest said they were the BEST wings he's ever had!! Also tried the Wagyu truffle smashed burger--loaded with mushrooms, onions, and garlic truffle aioli. So juicy and flavorful. Then we shared the 3 meats / 2 sides combo with grilled chicken, hot links, and beef ribs... everything was tender, flavorful, and seriously finger-lickin' good. And don't even get me started on the cornbread--moist, buttery, and I could've taken home a whole tray. Don't forget to order the red velvet deep fried oreos! Yum! Service was super friendly and on it. OB vibes with top-tier BBQ. Already planning our next visit

Yelp
I ordered the rib tip special with mac n cheese, potato salad and cornbread. The rib tips were really good even without bbq sauce. The spicy bbq sauce is really good. The Mac n cheese was basic but not the worse Mac I've ever had. The potato salad had good flavor but too much mayo for my personal preference, otherwise it was surprisingly good. I also received superb customer service. Typical BBQ sports bar feel by the beach which I enjoyed. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
We were staying at the OB Hotel and Becky was feeling a bit under the weather. She asked if I would see if I could find some soup to bring back th the room for her. My choices were limited. South Beach Bar and Grill kitchen was closed. I checked a couple of taco shops on Newport, but no soups on any menu. Then I spotted BBQ House Bar and Grill. Still open, still serving food. I walked in and spotted a menu card on a table: "New item! Tomato Basil Soup". Boom! In general neither Bex nor I are big fans of tomato soup, but I took my chances. I asked the Samantha the bartender for a cup to go. She was really sweet and friendly. She disappeared into the back for a few moments then emerged with a small to-go bag. A perfect serving size for only five bucks. Back at the room we both sampled the soup. For two people who don't like tomato soup, we were very pleasantly surprised. It was really good! It was a thicker consistency. The basil flavor really came through. It was not typical over-powering acidic tomato flavor. Dare I say it was reminiscent of pasta sauce? Very good soup BBQ House. Perfect for a wife not feeling too well. Excellent service as well.

Yelp
This place is the best spot in all of OB! I love the ambiance and the food is delicious! I recommend getting the BBQ plate with the ribs. The jalapeño poppers are a must too. Pretty much can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I also love how it is a family owned restaurant that has been around in OB for years! They have like 40 something beers on tap too.

Yelp
Solid bar with good vibes. I came to this venue because I wanted to watch March Madness. I called ahead to make sure they could play the game with sound, and the person on the phone said the bartender could do that. When I came by for the game, the bartender said she theoretically could but didn't... boo. I just had to watch the game without sound. Other than that, the bar was nice and had a lively energy/crowd. I got a margarita for happy hour and some mac & cheese. Decent bar food.

Yelp
Great service, yummy food, good beach side vibes, and reasonably priced (especially for walking distance to the beach).

Yelp
After a day of whale watching, my friends and I were craving chicken wings and beer, so we stopped by BBQ House Bar & Grill. I've been here before, but this is my first review--and it's well deserved. I ordered six wings with garlic bread, split between lemon pepper and buffalo flavors, and they were packed with flavor. Pairing them with a cold beer made for the perfect combo, hitting the spot after a long day. When we arrived, the table service was full, but luckily, some seats opened up at the bar, so we didn't have to wait too long. The bartender was friendly and helpful, adding to the laid-back and casual atmosphere. The only downside was that the wings were on the smaller side, but that just meant I should've ordered more! Overall, a solid spot for wings and drinks--definitely worth checking out when in the area.

Yelp
TLDR: A classic American bbq spot with a stellar history. Expect well seasoned food at a reasonable price located in San Diego's prime beach walk spots. 2pc Beef Ribs: I was pleasantly surprised with this since I rarely find good bbq beef ribs. It's tender, easy to eat off the bone, the meat was seasoned well, and the bbq sauce complimented the generously sized rib. Onion rings: Stock standard rings. Solid compliment to the meat, but nothing special. Service: Kind staff that are on top of things. No notes. Ambiance: It's a bar and restaurant feel which is what the restaurant was trying to be anyway.

Yelp
BBQ House was excellent, nestled in OB steps from the pier. The adjacent beach parlor is a two minute walk instead of circling the block for a spot. The restaurant is bright and welcoming and comfortable, great music is playing and not too loud. A huge bank of flatscreens display current sports. The bartender and serving staff are star performers , the ladies all look like part time actresses and so friendly and professional. The beef ribs are thick with lots of mouthwatering off the bone meat. So tender and smoked to perfection. The house salad was fresh crispy and large. The menu is well detailed and complete , lots of mouthwatering choices leaves more trips back. The crowds inside are friendly and this may be my birthday party locations "hint". Worth the drive and you can't beat the ocean views and salt air ! Go for it !

Yelp
Stopped after the OB Christmas parade- when the chaos had subsided a bit. Service was so friendly fly and fast and the food hit the spot. I love that they are dog friendly!

Yelp
Yummmm! My cousin really enjoyed his rice bowl and my other cousins loved his chicken tendies. And my other cousin enjoyed the onion rings-- they were gone rather quickly soo not pictured here. I love my tropical storm while sitting outside. The spicy BBQ sauce isn't very spicy but is quite good! Would definitely come back for good food and good service! Ps. They are dog friendly :)

Yelp
I don't always get a chance to dine at this awesome barbecue spot, but whenever I go to the beach, I aim to stop at at the barbecue house. My Sister introduced me to the spot many years ago and I have returned many times since. I love the atmosphere and the dining area overlooking the street as I like to people watch. I recommend the barbecue parfait. I asked to have mine with two different types of meat. I think I got the tri-tip and the brisket and it very much complemented the mashed potatoes. Their barbecue sauce is freaking amazing. I appreciate that they offer a variety. So I wish I could take a bath in it. It's high on the yum factor. I have brought many guests here and would absolutely recommend them.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch with the hubby! I'm not a bbq person personally but the chicken strips I could tell were hand breaded and so good w the franks hot and homemade ranch! My honey loveeeeeeed everything! From the brisket to the beef rib, rings and cornbread he was in absolute heaven!

Yelp
The food was amazing and the prices were even better! I haven't had good bbq in a while and it was delicious. My fiancé and I got some drinks and we split some food. We brought our dog and we sat on the patio, they even had a menu for dogs! The service was a little slow, our waiter took a while to bring the check. Other than that it was great!

Yelp
Came here for dinner with the family on Saturday evening around 5:45pm, we had a party of 6 adults and a baby. Our server was named Layla, she was super friendly and ever attentive with us. I was holding the table for our party and still waiting on the rest of the party to show up. Layla still came out and still checked on me even though I was still waiting our party. Our party showed up and we got 3 bbq pork ribs (were a little tough) with mac and cheese, tri tip sandwich with mac and cheese, spicy bbq & buffalo wings, mild bbq sauce & bourbon sriracha wings, bbq brisket sandwich and bbq parfait. All the food was delicious and homemade and the sauces were delicious too. Layla was always checking on us to make sure we had everything we needed. This place was amazing and we will be back again. Love that they have indoor and outdoor seating. Dog friendly place, they even have a dog menu.

Yelp
This is a lively place with good drinks, food and service. I like that things are priced reasonably and there are lots of options. We all had plates with different meats, I think my Dads ham was a unique standout- he didn't love the potato salad, but was easily full from the meat portions and even took some home. My friend really liked her brisket and beef rib plate and she loves any type of bbq. I also got beef ribs and they were tasty but I was still hungry as there wasn't a ton of meat on the bones. I tried the poppers as my side and I found them too spicy but love it as an option! Our drinks were all good and happy hour was busy. 2 gals serving the whole place. It's solid and I would definitely like to try the wings and/or burgers next time.

Yelp
I visited BBQ House in Ocean Beach back on Memorial Day and my visit was so-so. I'd give the Customer Service a 4 out of 5, the Ambiance a 3 out of 5, and the food a 3 out of 5, as well. The reason I gave the Ambiance a 3 out of 5 is due to them not really having any space for less than a party of at least four and a good majority of the tables were high top. Not really comfortable trying to balance yourself at a high top table while trying to eat messy BBQ....I'd rather not. Just a preference for me... I ordered the Three Meats, Two Sides Q Combo Plate with Brisket, Ribs, and Links as my meats and Cole Slaw and Macaroni Salad as my sides. I also ordered a piece of Cornbread to try, as well. My order was taken in a decent amount of time and my server correctly entered all the items that I wanted to my order. However, when I received my order, there was hardly any Brisket on my platter and the three ribs were so small with hardly any meat on them. It looked very different than multiple pictures I had previously viewed on Yelp and Google before deciding to dine there. I showed the pictures to my server and she kindly took my order back and it came out much better the second time around. Now, to the actual quality and taste of the food. The Ribs were cooked pretty well, only a slight pull from the teeth and the meat came right off the bone. The flavor of the Ribs was decent but nothing to write home to mama about...7.5 out of 10. The Brisket had a very thick greasiness to it, like it had been sitting too long...6 out of 10. The Links were both pretty flavorful with a good snap to them...8 out of 10. I asked for their Mild BBQ sauce and again it was just okay...7 out of 10. The Sides were both a no-go in my opinion. Both sides had hardly any flavor to it...very bland...4 out if 10. The Cornbread I'd give a 7 out of 10....just okay. I don't know if I will try this spot again. I guess only time will tell. Overall, 3 out of 5 stars, until next time...maybe.

Yelp
Such an underrated restaurant! I'm not a BBQ person but decided to check the menu out! They have a ton of veggie options! My dad got the parfait and it was an experience in itself! They are dog friendly. The staff is great. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Came in with my Bestie for lunch. We both had the pulled pork sandwiches. We ordered one spicy and the other regular. We also ordered fries, onion rings and coleslaw. The pulled pork sandwiches were flavorful, moist and filling. The fries and onion rings were hot and tasty. The coleslaw a tad bland, needs a little zip! Service was spot on with keeping up with our drinks and checking in on us a couple of times through our visit. The place was very clean and restrooms too. We sat near the front of the restaurant and had a good view of passersby, very entertaining. Love me the OB vibe!!

Yelp
1. It's located in OB 2. It's located on Newport Ave in OB 3. That dog poop people are upset about, is probably human poop. 4. Homeless gather aka live in the entrance of that place and line the street doing drugs. 5. It's dirty and unsafe 6. Coleslaw is good 7. Cornbread is good

Yelp
A good taste of southern barbecue on the beach! BBQ House offers great food, fast and friendly service, and a wonderful streetside location for people watching in fun and funky Ocean Beach. The brisket was lean and flavorful.

Yelp
The location of this place is decent on parking ,.. on a weekday it's more likely you'll find a spot to park. The restaurant itself is pretty clean and the theme is pretty cool. The waitress are kind and attentive. The food is delicious, if you like a lot of flavor get the brisket sandwich mild sauce it's not spicy at all and they give you a lot of meat. The mashed potatoes and fries were also good and it's all worth it. The prices are great for it being located in OB.

Yelp
Friend chose my option to eat here and celebrate a birthday lunch with him. Was about 11:20 so had a fairly empty restaurant and got good choose of seating. After looking over the menu we both selected the Q Combo. He got brisket and hot links with beans and a side of potato salad. I got the brisket and 3 pork ribs with beans and a Shiner Bock beer. We were helped by Dee who was very amiable and informative on helping us with items on the order. She not only was our cashier but delivered food and bussed tables. Management should make sure to keep her. We both enjoyed our food and can say that they have a top notch bbq to feast on. I would suggest that they don't put the bbq sauce on the food and let diner do so at table. Place was quite open and gives you outside, sidewalk or inside eating options. It was fairly quiet and a nice dining experience while close to the beach.

Yelp
Ambled into the BBQ House Bar & Grill of Ocean Beach with my shawty last night in search of some new years eve adult beverages and protein. The slop joint is roomy and open with solid tunes spinning about. The most friendly vibe lifts the demeanor. Wait staff is next level outstanding; busy, efficient & informative. Pints on the bar stand empty for but a moment at the most before fresh cold suds pour anew. The hot platters of brisket & tube steaks arrive quickly....tasty and abundant.....delicious. The adult cocktails are truly strong and mood lifting. Without any doubt, a destination well worthy of a visit soon. Stoner Grub Ranking: 9.5

Yelp
The service was great here. Our waitress was super friendly. The food was delicious and came out quick. I had three ribs and potato salad that were a 10/10. The ambiance was awesome, super cool place.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had an amazing experience! We ordered brisket, sausage links, rib tips, and ribs! All of it was delicious, not dry, and probably the best bbq we've had in SOCAL! Service was quick and attentive. The ambiance was nice, they had a bunch of tvs. We're definitely coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
The pulled pork sandwiches are wonderful- mild and spicy are both good depending on preference. We love getting the upgraded large sides and the best are mashed potatoes w/ gravy and the mac and cheese! Fun to sit and people watch at the bar ledge, staff is nice
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food! The fried oreos are red velvet with Oreo inside the center, their burgers and sandwiches are amazing, and good service! The staff was really nice and regularly asked if we needed anything instead of us having to call for her! Definitely would recommend if you're a food and football fan.

Yelp

Yelp
BBQ House has been my go to place for many years. I have ordered various plates and never been disappointed. My daughter and I decided to end my Mother's Day at the BBQ House and we shared the buffalo chicken sandwich. It was so tasty. I certainly want to give a shout out to MAX our server. He gave us excellent service. My daughter has a nut allergy and he reassured us that there are NO nuts in the kitchen because he was also one of the cooks at BBQ House and was familiar with the ingrediants. My daughter felt at ease to eat and certainly savored her food.

Yelp
Fantastic service and really awesome food! My son and husband loved the sloppy Joe burrito and sandwich. I loved the hand breaded chicken tenders and fries, which were so darn good!! We enjoyed the open air ambience of the restaurant, facing to the lively street!

Yelp
We had a good experince here today. Mark, the bartender, was super friendly and attentive. The food was really good and it was a fun and laid back environment. I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
We were sat very fast, and didn't have to wait very long for someone to take our order. The food had an expected wait time. Great seating options , great ranch, bbq house fries were crispy and flavorful, melted cheese was perfect. Sports Bar atmosphere is not overbearing. Bourbon Bacon Burger is recommended. Grilled chicken bbq sandwich fell apart unfortunately. But that was the only downside to this visit. Leaving full and satisfied !

Yelp
We were looking for a lunch place that served fried chicken because our son was craving it. This place had fried chicken fingers basket so we thought we'd give it a try. Yum all around! We enjoyed the brisket and hot links sandwich, cheeseburger, fried chicken sandwich and fried chicken fingers basket and a bowl of smoked brisket chili. Everything was delicious! You order at the front and they bring the food to you. Service was super friendly and helpful and fun vibe inside and outside.

Yelp
1//12/24 4 pm. Went in sat at the bar. Five others at bar. Two blondes working behind the bar. I think one may have been training. Sat there for ten minutes watching them do nothing but yak. Then one of them came down the bar to check on the people sitting TWO feet from me. Never made eye contact and just walked back to the other end of the bar. Just bizarre. Been to this place off and on for ten years and don't know what to think. Maybe she is a Covid grad w/o a clue what doing your job actually means. Crossed the street and got greeted and served within a minute. Won't be back.

Yelp
I tried BBQ House OB's new Creamy Tomato Basil soup served with crostini. Hands down Absolutely PHENOMENAL!!' I tried a sneak peak during the restaurant walk and been waiting ever since to get a full bowl. I can't rave enough about this soup and it's perfect timing because we are in soup season. I'd suggest definitely adding some additional crostini. I'm just going to say it again... this soup is PHENOMENAL!!!

Yelp
I've been going here since this place wasn't remodeled yet. It's awesome to see how much it's grown since and it's really good! I love their spicy bbq sauce. The sides are tasty as well. Good service. Wings tasted good the day after as leftovers too.

Yelp
Wow! Amazingly delicious! My son and I visited family in SD, We're from LA. We went here to eat after a day at the beach. I haven't had this great quality of food while eating out in a very long time! I want to say THANK YOU to all those, the owner, chef, and staff - this was a great experience from the get go. I appreciate your service, dedication and detail to what ended up on my plate to eat - I couldn't be more impressed and beyond satisfied with the taste! We'll be eating with you again when we're back in town!

Yelp
Amazing BBQ! Got the combo plate with 3 pork ribs, 1/4 chicken, and Louisiana hot links. Sides of baked beans and potato salad. Everything was absolutely delicious. The barbecue was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The sides were so delicious I ate them all and didn't have even room for all the meat. The portion was huge and can be shared by two people for sure. This restaurant was the best one I've ate at in Ocean Beach so far on my trip. I would definitely go back!

Yelp

Yelp
The BBQ here was really good. Good sauce and flavor. Loved how they have extra at the tables so if you need a little more you can add and mix spicy and mild to make it just right if you need to. The jalapeno poppers were crazy delicious. Super spicy and flavorful. Almost a little too spicy for me and I LOVE spicy so they were just perfect. The brisket sandwich was also very good. The pork friend and a little crunchy and crispy. Crazy good. The Mac salad was also good and delicious. Not super mayonassy. Which is perfect. Add a little of the spicy BBQ sauce and what a combination!! The drinks were delicious as well. Good meal with good friends. I'd be back.

Yelp
My son and his friend chose to dine in here, "BBQ HOUSE " in OCEAN BEACH. I didn't think twice and just got in, I always like OB restaurants, so far all the places we dined in OB have all good food. We got KATE as our server, she is very nice and full of Energy with a great smile, this place is small, only a couple of tables available. We ordered the Following food on their menu the : * BBQ BURRITO *ROAST SUB - with Bbq pulled pork *BBQ HOUSE FRIES - with Bbq Pulled pork *RIB TIP BURRITO *Q - COMBO - with Beef Brisket, Pulled pork , Pork ribs with Onion Rings on the side I loved my son's ROAST SUB, it's a good one, the Bbq Brisket in the sub is so tender and flavorful. I got their BBQ FRIES and BBQ BURRITO, the Fries didn't taste fresh or crunchy but the Bbq Pulled Pork in the fries was good. The BBQ BURRITO was really good too, I just didn't expect the Coleslaw to be inside already in the Burrito. My son's friends got the RIB TIP BURRITO, they said it was okay. My Husband's COMBO PLATTER with the side of Onion Rings was good. My Whiskey is worth it, it's a super good strong kick! These foods are so Heavy, it looks like a small portion but it's Heavy, and they really filled our stomach well.

Yelp
I have been coming to this place for nearly 30 years. I have never had a poor food or service experience any time over three decades. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere is amazing, the service is second to none. The barbecue sloppy Joe sandwich, which made them famous is something that you can't miss out on. I don't know if I'm more embarrassed or proud to admit that no matter what I order, I always get the sloppy Joe sandwich as well. This visit I ordered the St. Louis ribs, and every time I picked up a bone, the meat would fall right off of it. I love both of their barbecue sauces as well. The sweet flavor is so good and the spicy barbecue sauce tastes good on everything. I think I may have even rubbed a little bit of it on my mustache as I left just to pick me up for the rest of the day. Lol. If you are looking for a better alternative to that "other" barbecue place in San Diego, this place is definitely worth the drive.

Yelp
Delicious and hearty place to stop for a drink or bite to eat. We have been coming here for 11 years before it was remodeled into a more modern sports bar and grill, but the food itself has never changed. We always get the 3 protein platter with 2 sides and you get heaps of delicious, smokey, and juicy meat. You can choose mild or spicy bbq sauce or ask for sauce on the side. Their onion rings are coated with a crispy panko coating and their jalapeño poppers are coated the same and are fried to a perfect golden-brown with the perfect amount of spiciness and cheesiness. They have a full bar and are dog friendly with 2 patios. This place offers a kids menu and also a doggy meal. Just a quick stroll away from the waterfront, this place is a must visit destination if you are looking for a fulfilling meal.

Yelp
We stopped there for a drink and a bite to eat before we cut our afternoon plane. After witnessing just some of the vibes while we were there, we commented on how we wish we would've known about this place earlier so we could've stopped by to see the nightlife. Very cool place with lots of drink items to choose from and an excellent menu for eats and treats. We will definitely come back to this place when we return!
