"BBQ is a food rooted in social assemblage. Eating tri-tip, ribs, and hot links while surrounded by friends and family, listening to music, and drinking too many adult beverages is simply part of the experience. But it’s also one that’s tricky to pull off in a pandemic - particularly in a restaurant setting. But Gold Land BBQ, a Sunday-only pop-up in a Culver City parking lot, has proven that it can still be done both safely and comfortably, with some incredible food to boot. Located behind Menotti’s Coffee Stop in Culver City West, your experience at Gold Land BBQ starts the second you pull in. With a massive outdoor BBQ pit, blankets and chairs strewn around for people to hang out, and a separate truck selling frozen margaritas, you realize quickly this isn’t just a pop-up, it’s a full-on neighborhood BBQ party. Gold Land is run by a group of friends, and from the moment you walk up to order (you can also pre-order through their website), you’re their friend as well. It’s rare, even in the pop-up world, to feel like you’ve accidentally stumbled into somebody’s party, but at Gold Land, that’s sort of the case. We only say “sort of” because you actually feel like you were invited all along. As far as the food goes, this is Santa Maria-style BBQ, meaning everything from the tri tip to the linguica hot links are grilled over coastal red oak, which imparts a unique smoky-sweet flavor that’ll stay on your lips - and mind - for hours. To be frank, this is exceptional barbecue, the kind worth driving across the city on a Sunday to eat. The fact there’s a neighborhood party going on when you get there simply completes the experience. We’ve just named Gold Land one of LA’s Best Pop-Ups. Check out the full list here. Food Rundown photo credit: Brant Cox The Rambler Whether this is your first time to Gold Land or your 50th, every meal here starts with this giant sampler platter. For $39, you get a half-pound of prime beef tri-tip, sliced linguica (Portuguese pork sausage), one chicken leg and thigh, elote, potato salad, vinegar slaw, pickles, and white bread. Yes, it’s a fantastic value, but it’s also the perfect way to understand the true finesse that goes into every piece of meat on the menu. Uncle Bill’s Ribs We don’t know who Uncle Bill is, but based on these ribs, he seems like a guy we’d want to hang out with. These aren’t included in The Rambler, so be sure to order them separately. The pork ribs themselves are meaty and well-cooked, but what takes them to the next level is the Santa Maria-style dry rub. Salty and sweet, with just a tiny kick at the end, it’ll make you wonder why this style of BBQ still isn’t that prevalent in LA. photo credit: Brant Cox The Lone Ranger If you aren’t super hungry, this sandwich is a great way to get Gold Land’s excellent tri-tip without everything else. If you are super hungry, be sure to order this in addition to The Rambler. Tri-tip, onions, cilantro, and house BBQ sauce all served on a pillowy potato roll, it’s a straightforward sandwich that let’s the quality of the meat do the talking. photo credit: Brant Cox Longo Dog This was just a special on the day we went, but it was a highlight of the whole meal. Sweet linguica sausage topped with pico de gallo on a butter roll with Carolina gold mustard on top. It’s the best hot dog we’ve ever eaten in LA, and that’s coming from the mouth of a Chicago native. If it’s on the menu when you’re there, get it." - Brant Cox

BBQ Land is the best! My family has always orders delivery for large parties. We usually get, half chickens with steak salads. We also love the tri-tip (just make sure you say how well done you want it, they’ll do it for you) The food is made with love and you can taste it. There Kim-chi, potato salad, beans, and salsa are addictive. We always get extra just in case. Highly recommended for large last minute family gatherings. Enjoy!

I recently stopped by BBQ Land in Santa Maria, and it’s definitely some of the best barbecue I’ve had in a while. The tri-tip sandwich was fantastic—juicy, with just the right smoky flavor, and served on perfectly toasted bread. You can tell they put real care into the barbecue here. I also tried the ribs, and they were fall-off-the-bone tender, with a nice depth of flavor. The sides were generous, too. The beans were rich and flavorful, and the coleslaw was a great balance to the richness of the meat. The whole place has a laid-back, welcoming vibe, and the staff were friendly and quick to get orders out even when it was busy. I’d absolutely recommend BBQ Land to anyone in the area looking for an authentic Santa Maria BBQ experience. It’s a hidden gem worth checking out if you’re craving solid, satisfying barbecue.

Google
For a place that’s famous for its own cut of meat (like Santa Maria and tri-tip), you expect to find a lot of great barbecue. For the most part, that’s just not the case. The only place that truly lives up to those expectations is Barbecue Land. Great prices, food taste, food quality, consistency between visits, service, atmosphere (kid friendly) are all stellar. Could not recommend more highly!

David Van Valkenburgh

Google
"An absolutely memorable BBQ experience! The food quality is outstanding, with a wide variety of main dishes and fresh, delicious sides that perfectly complement each other. The service was excellent; the staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, offering helpful recommendations. Prices are reasonable, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere makes you feel right at home. This spot is a must-visit for BBQ lovers!"

Google
Bar B Que Land use to be really good. Remember on the weekends in Santa Maria you can smell BBQ up and down Broadway, they took a great idea for fundraising and turned it into a daily business. Most recently we made a purchase expecting some BOMB A** BBQ...sadly it was not! The TRI TIP meat is so dry, and it's more like top lock cut, not the actual Tri Tip cut, it doesn't matter how much bbq sauce or watery pico de gallo they give it still won't become juicy... plus it was at least a day old, but the worst part of it all the meat was cooked over PINE not OAK🤦 anybody that has bbq'd on their own knows that cooking with Pine is a major NoNo. Not only does it change the the flavor of RED or WHITE OAK, but cooking with Pine wood can make you VERY SICK... beware Patrons of Santa Maria, and good luck if you continue to dine there

Steve Amrol

Google
I absolutely love this place. Definitely worth the stop on any trip between Santa Barbara and SLO. They use a special wood that smokes and charbroils the meats to perfection. The hamburgers are my special favorite but the tri-tip and ribs are amazing too!

Megan Van Valkenburgh

Google
I have been coming here for excellent BBQ and Korean food for 20 years. It's crazy that you can find authenticity at this level for two different cuisines at a single restaurant at REASONABLE prices. BBQ Land is my go-to when I need a kimchi fix and my husband/daughter want some awesome tri-tip and ribs -- I drive from literally an hour away! Plus, it's a locally operated and family-owned restaurant with stellar service. How many places like that are even left?

Susan Dominguez

Google
Definitely get the tri-trip sandwich. The bread is crispy, and meat is juicy. Although if you hate well done meat, don't get it. Since the slices are thinly slice, it cook faster. I recommend the ribs if you want something cooked medium rare. Big side salad, good macaroni salad, great fries.

Rose G.

Yelp
Great hold in the wall BBQ place. Saw the reviews and decided to try. They did not disappoint. Cashier was friendly and told us that she had been working there for years, worked with the father and now the son, so family owed! Highly recommend if you are looking for a BBQ spot

Meghan W.

Yelp
I'm traveling into Santa maria for a wedding. I google Santa maria tri tip restaurants. This one is open and I didn't have time or reception to look at reviews. I'm a short amount of time, I called my order over the phone so that it could be ready by 12pm. The restaurant is in an older strip mall in the corner. There's plenty of seating in side. My food was ready. I got take out so I can't really say if service is good or not but the guy that gave us our order was nice. We know that Santa Maria is known for their tri tip. We ordered the tri tip sandwich lunch plate. It came with a choice of 2 sides. The tri tip sandwich was a huge disappointment. It was tiny and the slices of tri tip were dry and flat. The bbq sauce that came with it was OK but it tastes like something you buy at the store. The garlic bread was cold! The salad looked wilted. It was just a salad. Looking over the menu, this place has so many choices. They have Asian food as well. We got the fried rice for my mom in law. She liked it. I didn't try it. I feel like maybe this place should stick to Asian food.

Aaron W.

Yelp
We were passing through Santa Maria and wanted to try their famous Santa Maria Tri Tip steak so we ordered a tri tip sandwich, salad , and chicken fried rice. The rice dish was good. The salad was just lettuce but the dressing was great. The tri tip steak sandwich was fantastic, but the portion was on the smaller size. The service was friendly. The inside was nicely decorated. Give them a try for great tasting Santa Maria tri tip.

Brian B.

Yelp
It was okay , the food was not cooked in a stove !!! I enjoyed the meal at the restaurant

E H.

Yelp
It's been a while since i've been here. Don't know why I waited so long to come back. Food was bomb. A+++ Will definitely be heading this way again very soon.

Chris S.

Yelp
Mediocre. Bbq tri tip sandwich had one small piece of tri tip. The beans on the side were okish, I won't be back. It got two stars because the meal was reasonably priced

Casandra V.

Yelp
Service is great fast and easy the girl helping us was very nice, great price for what you get not only one side but two of your choice my food today was very good hamburger was delicious and fry's were good also with a coke yum only downside is the straws break apart if you squeeze them but everything else is great!

Alex C.

Yelp
Service Was Great Flavor of the Food was lacking, my tri tip sandwich was sad with little to no flavor. The garlic bread was good tho but the mac salad was a little sour and i did not finish it because i was scared it was expired. The price makes up for it a little. But if you were looking for a decent tri tip sandwich i recommend to go down the street to albertsons and make your own tri tip sandwich

Raymond S.

Yelp
First impressions I mean a lot. & for the Sever was very Polite, helpful, & food was so good and quick service every thing came out. Super bomb Definitely recommend the wagyu beef ribs an Tri tip sandwich. super bomb Definitely will Be back.

Ron Y.

Yelp
I been coming here for many years mainly for their chicken combos. I usually get a half chicken, rice, beans and macaroni salad. Well tonight I tried to get one but they didn't have any half chickens ready not for an hour but they had quarter chickens so I ordered that. Thigh and leg was great, but the chili beans weren't the same, I normally mix the beans and beans and it taste great but I started to mix but couldn't get that taste so I dumped that idea and just put soy sauce in the rice. The macaroni salad was decent, it has been better. Customer service is great, they are smiling and being attentive. All I can say is work on those chili beans.

Clay J.

Yelp
Had high expectations for this place because it smelled soooooo good driving by. Completely disappointed.

Rick M.

Yelp
this place is an absolute joke of a BBQ restaurant, portions are small meat is dry, everything about it was just bad, i will never ever go there again nor will i recommend it to anyone, surprised that they are still in business, and they are way overpriced for the crap they are calling BBQ If you are thinking of going there save your money go someplace else Pismo has a good BBQ place just a block or so from the pier

Bruce H.

Yelp
This place is a solid 3.5 star. I had the tri-tip sandwich with a side of coleslaw and potato salad. My tri-tip was good, it had a good smoke flavor. The potato salad was good, coleslaw was so so. wanted authentic Santa Maria tri-tip, it was good, I would like to try a few other places. I will continue my search!

Norman G.

Yelp
I got lunch there last Week, pretty good but, I had two gift cards and asked to have them combined. One new one the other had a little bit left on it. I went back in this week for the same burger lunch and was told what I had was a points card. A what? What happened to all the money that was on the two of them? She said she didn't know, I had a points card, you can't use it until it had at least $10. on it. I had more than that on one of the cards alone! She didn't explain how it works. All she said was, you can't use it until you have $10. on it, look, you're almost there. But what happened to all the money that should be there from my two gift cards? Never heard of points before! I'm out, they won. Never again, don't go in for games when all you want is lunch.

Orlando R.

Yelp
Worse trip tip sandwich I've ever had. Dam shame. 2 thin slices of meat. No good here.

Nina M.

Yelp
We had the short ribs tonight with a side of beans and cole slaw. The full rack was a very large portion. However, it was not tender enough to fall off the bone. I found the meat to be in the chewy side. I also didn't love the bbq sauce they use. I asked for a sweeter sauce and the employee told me they only carry one type of bbq sauce. The meal wasn't bad but I'm spoiled by tender and juicy ribs at Firestone Grill and these didn't meet the mark for me.

John M.

Yelp
Place has been closed for several months after a fire in the kitchen. Unknown when or if it will reopen?

Don C.

Yelp
Place use to be ok back in the day. Now a days they should just rename the place. BBQ Land BBQ is reheated not fresh!!! Tri Tip not the place for it, there our food trucks around town with fresh, great tasting Santa Maria Style BBQ for a better price at that. I dont thinl the owners are worried about quality as it has been suffering for years... Hungry BBQ people ive even heard locals dont claim this place as theres. Needs upgrades to decor or some type of splash of looking like a place to want to sit down and eat. Ask around town for actual local fresh BBQ and locations.

Kevin C.

Yelp
This place has changed over the past couple of years! Used to be an okay place to grab some bbq and enjoy but nowadays it's not as good as I remembered. I used to come here and get the tri-tip and the ribs. The ribs were actually good and had a nice smoke to it but now it's just been drying out. Same thing with the tri-tip. The tri-tip has no type of seasoning to it and the only way to actually have it tasty is to add the bbq sauce to it. The sides, is the reason why i am writing a review. I had their potato Salad and it was SPOILED! I literally took a bite of it and literally spat it out. Was the most disgusting thing I've ever encountered. How can you guys serve spoiled foods to paying customers!? Check your inventory or better yet, make it fresh. I don't want anybody to experience anything I had encountered.

Brian M.

Yelp
amazing experience and the customer service was 10 out of 10. the food we had was delicious and very flavorful. nice portions were given and the service from the employees was quick and on it. the ambiance of the place was nice. chairs are very comfy and table was clean. would eat again!!!

Tadeusz L.

Yelp
They are open again! Yes!! Really like this place. Great place to eat. Really like their ribs. Great sauce.

Lora A.

Yelp
The service is very good! Friendly staff. The food is Amazzzzzzzzzzzzzzing!! Chicken very tender. Potato Salad and Macaroni Salad are great! I recommend this place 100%. Love this great barbeque place.

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Santa Maria style no frills BBQ Food was decent but I wouldn't be telling you you gotta stop here, either.

Arie R.

Yelp
This used to be my go to spot for bbq tri tip back when I lived here in 2014. I recently moved back temporarily and decided to grab a plate for me and my family and my goodness. Their tri tip is so thin now that it's overcooked, leathery and dry. I did not like it all, that's not Santa Maria tri-tip. Sides were good, honestly better than the meat. I used to recommend this place all the time but yea... not anymore. The cashier was nice but idk.. may need a new cook or something..?

Rudy D.

Yelp
I've been coming here over the years and have always enjoyed the food. Friendly family owned place, tri-tip and ribs have always been great along with three sides. Looked forward to eating here again... until the food arrived. The ribs and tri-tip was very dry and not very palatable. I don't think the ribs were fresh. I am hoping this is just a fluke as I will try them again.

Bennet M.

Yelp
My Yelp app was acting up at the time so I looked at this place in google. The reviews were good so I was like why not. Well needless to say, it was not as we thought. I was disappointed this place wasn't up to par with the reviews. This place is owned by Koreans hence the menu has some Korean flare to it. I love Korean food, but I came here for BBQ. We ordered the BBQ chicken platter with potato salad, salad, pulled pork burrito, and Tri tip platter (my pic says brisket, sorry). My chicken was decent, nothing to brag about but it tasted like el pollo loco and I like their chicken too. But it did not have a BBQ taste. I only like my potato salad but I did enjoy theirs. My son said his burrito was good and the tri-tip, my husband did not enjoy. I felt bad because he is from there but he should know where to take us right? It's been years and it has changed so I don't blame him for not knowing. His spots were gone. Anyways, the Korean food smelled so good though. I watched some other customers and they seemed to enjoy it. Next time, maybe I will order Korean food. But for BBQ, I will not be going here or trusting google at that.

Daniel J.

Yelp
Hope it reopens soon! One of my favorite places to come while I lived in Santa Maria. I now live in another state but always make it a point to come back when I visit family in the area.

Selina L.

Yelp
Delicious!! All the food was fresh and tasty! I come every year with my family and it never fails me

Geri S.

Yelp
BBQ Land was the highlight of our drive through Santa Maria from Carpinteria to San Francisco. As we searched for a taste of Santa Maria style tri tip on our early Monday drive homeward bound, we were satisfied by the fresh sides and the well-charred tender 2-slices of the "rare" tri tip Beef plate for $10.

Greg M.

Yelp
BBQ Land! Please embrace the rich Santa Maria BBQ history! My family and I stopped by on our way back to San Diego from the Central Coast. I'm always a little concerned when I see a menu that is kind of jumbled. This place is serving up BBQ dishes and Asian food. My advise to the owners would be pick one... Make this a BBQ joint or an Asian restaurant. Keep the menu simple and high quality. I ordered the Tri Tip Plate. I was expecting sliced medium rare tri tip, instead I received 1/16 " sliced tri tip which had obviously been cooked earlier and tossed on the grill prior to being served. The result was dry jerky like beef that was still cool, like it just came out of the fridge. My sides were ok. My son had pork ribs, that he enjoyed, but at $5.45 per rib... WOW, not worth the price. They have the right set-up to make some good Santa Maria BBQ. Hopefully they will embrace the SMBBQ history!

N F.

Yelp
Good food & prices and friendly service. I picked up an order online. All of it was really yummy & the service was friendly. Very affordable for the quality you get! I'd eat here again

P T.

Yelp
I stopped by because a local Santa Marian recommended it when our first choice was closed. I ordered the tri-tip sandwich figuring, "When in Rome" might as well have Santa Maria style tri-tip, for my sides I had the garlic bread and beans. When the tri-tip showed up it had grill marks and was sliced very thin. The grill marks were on all of the pieces leading me to believe they re-heated the meat. The flavor was bland, not even a hint of the red oak I was expecting. The beans were the best part of the meal, and my friends had similar sentiments. Value wise it was reasonable, but I wouldn't go back... No matter who recommended it!

Miles T.

Yelp
Solid 2 stars for the now Korean run BBQ land. Fries were fresh and the beer was cold. Garlic bread tasted awful and the chicken just wasn't done right. It was hot but flavorless and small

jonathan s.

Yelp
I walked in. There were two customers there. This is a Saturday at lunch time. I stood at the counter and looked at the menu. I waited. Then I waited. After 5 minutes of standing there with no acknowledgement from the staff, I left. I would have bought a tri tip roast. Oh well.

Dennis H.

Yelp
Our first time at this restaurant. I ordered a combination plate with one beef rib and two pork ribs. You get three sides. I chose the beans, cole slaw, and side salad. I enjoyed everything and so did my wife where she ordered baby back ribs. we'll be back. The prices are very reasonable and their are many selections offered.

Brian H.

Yelp
Good and hit the spot. Here on work and traveled the bbq states so I tried it. Tri Tip sandwich is their popular dish. Got it and its good. Moist but not wet like Texas but still good. 12 bucks for entire meal and 3 minute wait time at 8pm on Sat night. Happy with that. The sandwich is sorta plain of just the tri tip and dinner roll but it came with bbq that is sweet and tangy. Applied it to the meat and bun and in between bites. Very good :) Potato salad was like home made and good. Garlic bread was toasted and made per order. Without the bbq sauce the tri tip was already flavored and moist and easy to bite. Seems like it was slowed cooked or smoked since I could smell it from outside. Didn't ask but happy with it. Check it out when in thw area.

Marissa S.

Yelp
First time ordering from here i order bbq baby ribs rice, macaroni, fries for sides ribs were cold chewy and dry macaroni was salty and fries were soggy rice was good. I heard this place was good at some point but i highly doubt it i dont think i would try it again

Brisa R.

Yelp
Situated on the corner of yet another strip mall like the dozens which seem to be all over the place, I was once delighted with the food here when we first visited back in 2014. There has been a steady decline in service since then. The outside was never pretty and the inside was never inviting for lingering or having a leisure meal but what was consistent was portion sizes, flavor of sauces and speed. The last few times we have visited this has not been the case. I always order the rib combo. The last couple of times it seems like the ribs are old and just resplashed with sauce before they are tossed in the to-go. The portion of rice and sides given has also been decreasing with time. And finally after sitting and waiting for 45 minutes this last time I got my food. 45 minutes for 4 ribs, a salad, some beans and rice is a bit much. I'm disappointed with how these last visits have gone. I might not be back again.

Linda S.

Yelp
Awesome !!!!!! I Wanted to try everything on the Menu!!!! Food delicious !!! Staff awesome very attentive. You def have to stop and eat here !!! Ramon took our order!! He was super sweet and had a great attitude !! Def an asset to the company !!! Thanks Ramon !! And thank you Bar B Que Land !!!

Shawn N.

Yelp
Great BBQ meal for a great price. We came in on a Saturday night. There wasn't a huge crowd. I ordered the 2 BBQ Beef Ribs and 1 BBQ Pork Rib Combo plate. For $10.45 the ribs came with 3 sides of my choice. I picked the beans, potato salad and garlic bread. My friend ordered the Tri-Tip Plate, which also came with 3 sides for $7.95. They charged us $0.25 for a small side of salsa. The food came hot and was delicious. Plenty of meat on the bones. We were not disappointed. The ambience of this place is very casual. You order from at the counter and then take any seat available. They bring your food to your table. They have a self-serve soft drink machine. There is a large 60-inch tv in the dining room that is a focus point. Under the tv they store supplies. Tonight there were boxes of food containers and cups. I took a star off because there were dirty dishes on tables during our entire meal. Employees were standing around talking, no one seemed to care. Overall we had a great meal and will be coming back.

Mary M.

Yelp
Food was very good snd the portions were huge! My hub ordered the rack of ribs....extremely meaty, juicy. And tasted/smelled devine. I got the beef ribs and tri- tip. Perfectly cooked! We ordered a bunch of sides like beans. Garlic bread, salad, extra potato salad. Everything complemented the ribs. Too bad I do not live in this town, as this would become a go-to for BBQ! Great place to visit and try some delish, smoked BBQ!

Bannister C.

Yelp
I ate here when I passed by on my way to the SF Bay Area. Tri tip and pork ribs were succulent and flavorful. The price was reasonable and just right. It's a shame it's just too far from the LA area. I really enjoyed my easy-going meal there.

Catherine M.

Yelp
This was the best barbeque I have had here on my visit to town. I had baby back ribs they were delicious.

Michael C.

Yelp
The food was well cooked, tasty and in good quantity. The price was right also, Great service and very clean environment. The beef ribs were great.

Cherae B.

Yelp
We don't plan on eating here again. It was our first time eating here and initially walking through the door we should have immediately left. As soon as you walk in it smells like a bathroom like they use bulk commercialized bathroom cleaning products to clean their eating area which was gross but my partner was keen on having BBQ so we stayed. The food was "okay" between my partner and I we had pulled pork and their tri-tip which was good. But all of their sides (i.e. french fries, potato salad, macaroni salad, and beans) seem to have come from bulk purchases from a store. The frozen french fries that were probably fried twice or for too long were very crunchy and distasteful. The small roll for my pulled pork sandwich was about 4 inches in length and 2 inches in width so very small when I was expecting a larger hamburger like roll.

Jennifer O.

Yelp
I don't care what anyone else says about this place....I love it!!! I love the way they cook their tri tip its my favorite, some believe its cut to thin but that doesn't change the taste for me! The staff is always friendly and I always leave there satisfied!

Patrick M.

Yelp
A Mexican, Asian barbecue. Kind of odd to me. Average quality on the meat. Low quality sides. Worth eating but not worth going to eat.

Soso S.

Yelp
I feel like they cook the food days ahead and just microwave/grill it to bring it back to temp ordered a steak and was cooked and cold at the same time.

Craigie E.

Yelp
This place is disgusting!!! The food was basically CHARCOAL!! This is not even the first it happened. I called and was told if you don't call within 10 minutes, then it's not his problem. The French fries were cold, and gross. Food total came to $34.14. That is too expensive for this crap. I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau!!!!
