Beeliner Diner Brings 35-Pound Cakes to Alexandria - Eater DC

"When Beeliner Diner (3648 King Street) opens in Alexandria, an open dessert kitchen will sling boozy (and also not) milkshakes and other sweet treats at a 38-seat all-ages bar. The cherry on top might be the massive elephantine TowerCakes though: Each slice of a 25 to 35 pound cake serves three or four people easily. In the evenings, the diner will serve burgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches from Bun Papa. Plan stomach real estate for the opening early next year." - Stephanie Carter

I have ate here 3x now and each time has been great. We were seated immediately. It was still early in the day so we decided to get breakfast. it wasn’t too crowded. Food came out a timely manner. Everything was tasty would recommend if you’re in the area.

Google
This cutie diner deserves all the 5-star reviews in the world. Service is near perfect. Staff frequently checkin and are friendly. My burger and chicken sandwich were absolutely delicious and fresh. I loved the cheese curds, too—had to get some traditional diner food. The vibes are really unique. I enjoyed sitting at the bar with a friend.

Not a bad place, but don’t see it as a big draw. They’re nestled in a strip mall so there’s plenty of parking. We were seated immediately. I found the staff friendly, with our waiter checking on us frequently, which is good. The setting is casual, but not something for a special occasion in my book. As to the food, it was just food. Prices are reasonable and you get plenty but I don’t think there’s much flavor. Sort of bland, I think. I got a breakfast burrito with chorizo, which was huge, but just lacked flavor. My wife got a garden omelette.

Google
The restaurant boasted a impeccably clean and pleasant ambiance. The service provided was of the highest quality. A wide array of food options was available, prompting me to consider revisiting to sample a different dish. The offering of an all-day breakfast menu particularly stood out as a favorable feature.

We really enjoyed this place. We went for Bingo in a Thursday and it was fun. The owner came over to welcome us. They have many cakes and pies that are baked on site. Drinks were good. Service was great. I would definitely recommend this place.

Google
Great spot! I had the breakfast burrito, and my wife had the country-fried steak. We also ordered some cheese curds. The coffee was tasty, and the rest of the food was delicious. The country-fried steak and fried cheese curds were fried perfectly. :) The breakfast burrito was also well made and a pretty significant portion! Finally, the home fries were well seasoned. We will be coming back to try more items on the menu.

Google
So we stopped by your try this place for the first time today. It has great potential but it lacks a few things to be great. They don’t offer grits for one. They also don’t offer three eggs! It’s either two or four! I am a little confused! At any rate you should try it! The desserts look amazing and maybe they offer the tallest cake I have yet to see. They are in the Bradlee shopping center off of King street. I will go back and explore further. Hopefully they read this and become a little more flexible in their offerings! There is stiff competition nearby! I in fact asked for three eggs, I was told the only option which is also the only option on the menu was 2 or 4. You need to fix the menu and inform your staff if in fact 3 eggs are an option please.

Stopped in while waiting in the neighborhood. Plenty of menu options. Had the short rib hash and it bested expectations! The dessert case was tempting, but the meal was so good I left no room. First-world problems. Lol

Yelp
Great food and service, always...All the staff are courteous and make you feel at home. Special shout out to Jalen and Sadie for their outstanding service! Marcus J

Yelp
I moved to the area from Italy and this was my first spot to stop at for happy hour since arriving. This was back in June and I've been coming religiously ever since. David is amazing and provides a great customer experience. Sometimes his singing can be a bit off key but somehow manages to add the struggling notes to the ambience. Then come the drinks...I was very apprehensive, as I don't like spicy drinks, but he recommended the spicy margarita and took the spice level down a few notches for me. Needless to say, that's the reason I come back! All in all this place feels like family and we are remember when we walk through the doors. It's hard to find places like this in this day and age. Makes me want to finish with, "Where everybody knows your name!"

Yelp
We all hated seeing Atlantis close, but this is a nice use of the space. Great use of subway time and other colorful features. A variety of seating for groups small and large. Don't quote me, but I think you can order breakfast all day. I have enjoyed the waffles and French toast on numerous visits. I was glad for meatless menu items like these, but the prices would warrant *some kind* of side, yet everything is à la carte. Service here is friendly if not fast.

Yelp
I'm bummed to say that I've had to drop a star from my previous review of the Beeliner Diner after my last couple of visits, especially the most recent one. It was shockingly different from the great experiences I had there before. This latest visit was unbelievable--in a bad way. The moment I walked in, the scene was chaotic. There were quite a few people waiting to be seated, but none of us got even a nod of recognition. Some waitresses were just standing around, seemingly unbothered, and then there was the guy who looked like the manager. He popped out, still yapping on his phone, gave us a quick "someone will be with you shortly" without making any eye contact, and then just wandered off continuing his call. But here's the real kicker--the place was a mess. It looked like they might have had a big party before I got there because there were dirty dishes piled up everywhere. Counters, tables, you name it. For a spot that prides itself as a cozy diner, seeing it in such disarray was a major turn-off. So, that was enough for me. I just turned around and walked out. I didn't even bother waiting to see if the food quality had gone downhill too. It's a shame because it's really an eating establishment, and no one wants to dine amidst a mess. Disappointed is an understatement--I really hope they pull it together and get back to the standards they once upheld.

Yelp
Service was pretty inhospitable, our server never smiled or asked us how we were doing. I could've made a better breakfast for much less than $16. Also, to call yourself a diner and not serve traditional hash-browns as part of breakfast makes no sense to me. I don't recommended this place for breakfast by any means.

Yelp
The Berliner diner is unique. It's decorated with neon beehive lights and set as a modern diner. The service was good. They were not really busy so it was quiet. The food was good but not great. I had the burrito bowl. The flavor was good but the chicken was a bit overcooked and dry. Portions were a bit chewy. My son had the gyro platter. He did not like the green beans and his food was not hot. My best friend had the chicken skewers and they tasted fine but again not hot. Their dessert case looked amazing but we didn't try any. The bathrooms were clean. I may try them again.

Yelp
The taste, service, and ambience was a great experience!! From the time you enter the restaurant, it seems like the entire staff provides you with a warm welcome. The dessert display at the entrance makes you want to try everything in it!! The menu is a little large, but everything in it is inviting!! I didn't take photos of the inside of the menu as I do not like to post businesses pricing. We will definitely be returning!

Yelp
The quality of this diner has dramatically declined in recent months. I remember my first experience being spectacular. However, after going back several times, I was disappointed in the quality and overall customer service. The food comes out cold, and the servers are just all over the place. I observed several servers being on duty and not being attentive to the restaurant or diners. I observed trash, and food just sitting on the counters well after folks have left. I experienced someone coming into the restaurant, panhandling. I've also experienced the waiters ignoring me while I was sitting at the bar, waiting for someone to come and check on me so that I could order something else. Again, the quality is just not that good, and I've ordered almost the same items each time so that I could compare the experiences. I originally found this location because I frequent the massage parlor next door, and I just do not recommend this location, and I do not plan to visit in the future unless management does something to address these issues. --Specifically, one server should not be operating the bar, attending to customers in booths, and running plates while there are other employees in the back just lollygagging. Totally unacceptable.

Vernell B.

Yelp
I did a mobile order and found the was ready mainly because no one looked at mobile orders. So when the order was finally looked up one items wasn't available. When I tried the lemon drop cake was dry. That was unfortunate because I was looking forward to it. Customer service was very friendly and helpful. I will definitely try again

Yelp
We visited this location once and it was ok. The service was great! We did catch them an hour before they were about to close, so it was empty. I think it was only 3 parties there where our party had the largest of 4 people. It is really cute in here too! The food was ok. The wings really didn't have any seasoning, it was just tossed into the sauce. The chicken and waffles were just ok. Unfortunately, nothing on the menu stood out to the point we'd return again. The service and ambiance is great, but I'd recommend tweaking the menu or adding some seasoning to the menu items.

Yelp
Finally tried this establishment, and I will be back! Came for brunch and the food was great, they have so many options for brunch, breakfast, and dinner. The only issue was the wait time to be seated, three employees walked past us and not one asked if we had been helped. I had to ask one to send a hostess over to be seated. After that, everything else was fine. The option to order silver dollar pancakes was perfect for my portion needs. They also have bingo every Thursday at 7PM. I also want to try a slice of their tower cake as well LOL!

Yelp
It's gone downhill since last visit. Friday breakfast had just a couple of tables yet it took way too long to have a server come and even get coffee. We ordered Tex-Mex omelette. And I asked for wheat toast. When it came, no salsa and no potatoes. The server said well, we substituted the one slice of toast for the potatoes. In 50 years of ordering breakfast I've never received just one slice of toast. I echo another review. The 2 servers would rather be doing something other than waiting on customers. Just 9 am and the floor still had food on it from the night before. So disappointing since we wanted the diner to succeed. Looks like management gave up.

Yelp
Phenomenal service throughout the experience. First diner I have been to where the art and decor stood out. We had the short rib omelette with home fries and country fried steak. The omelet was not seasoned at all, but I suspect they might be catering to their normal customers during the breakfast crowd on the weekdays. Will certainly return for dessert as the window display prominently shows enticing cheesecake, cakes, and pies.

Tamela C.

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp and I'm glad I did! Breakfast was FANTASTIC & the ambiance was amazing! My mom and I had our usual 2 egg breakfast and we share an 9rser of pancakes. 2 egg breakfast came with - yummiest bacon- and sausage links too. I ordered pineapple juice and it tasted fresh squeezed! I would love to go back and try their cakes and pies. The decor was charming- the Edison light bulbs, neon honeycomb lights on the ceiling and mural made the restaurant even more welcoming!

Yelp
Came here on a saturday morning for brunch. Interior of the place is cute and definitely brings on the bee theme. Food and service was ok. I had the breakfast sandwhich and it was very garlicky and couldnt finish my sandwhich. I should have stuck with my gut and cone with the breakfast burrito (it looked good) Hubby had the tex mex omelette and thought it was ok. I would give this place another go and try the burrito...

Micha M.

Yelp
It was a cute, little diner. The staff were great and the food was good too. Definitely a good find!

Yelp
I walked by on my way to Michael's sometime ago and saw a huge line of people waiting to get in. Today I returned to see what the fuss was about. Over my food-baby belly I say the fuss was right! The atmosphere is very cute. They are dedicated to the bee theme and the decor, shelving, and utensils carry their commitment through. Servers were smart, we uniformed and friendly. I had to complement one gentleman who shaves his head just like my date. I observed him chasing plates down to ensure that they were exactly as diners ordered coming out of the kitchen. He moved like lightning! All food was hot and beautifully prepared. We ordered chicken and waffles served with maple syrup, butter, and hot honey. The food was absolutely delicious. If I had to add any downside, the prices are a little on the high side, but you get what you pay for in this particular case. we paid more but received high quality. I recommend and I'll be back!

Yelp
Went for the first time. Food was not good. I ordered the Hungry Bee. The egg portion was tiny, and home fries portion was also very small. The home fries are clearly frozen, and just quickly deep fried. I asked for the bacon extra crispy and it came out rubbery. For $17 I expected a lot more. Sadly, I won't be going back.

Yelp
The best offering in greater Old Town Alexandria, owners Markos and Nolie are offering the best baked goods as well as healthy fresh food choices. We hear that on and off premiss CATERING will be offered soon.‍

Yelp
I finally made a visit to Beeliner and loved it! Came here for a weekday brunch (yay summer) with a picky eater, and everything eater, and an almost vegan (I describe her this way because once in a while she might eat cheese lol) The appeal of coming here is that there is really something for everyone on the menu. I went with the pot roast hash. It was super yum (after I added hot sauce because of course) and filling. I couldn't finish my potatoes so the portion was generous. The everything eater went with pastrami reuben, the almost vegan went with the smashed plantains, the picky eater went with the breakfast sammy. All reported back positively. Since we were celebrating birthdays, we got their very instagrammable enormous slice of birthday cake to share with enough left over to take home.

Yelp
A visually appealing establishment, really nice and friendly servers/employees, ..mediocre food. It's clean, looks new and fresh and the decor is cute, fun and funky. Modern diner vibes for sure. Came here on Thursday afternoon for brunch. No wait, we were seated right away. Service was prompt, server was friendly. Our food was where it fell short for me. Breakfast Sandwich - asked for soft scrambled eggs, came to me as more of a hard scramble. Was excited to try the house sourdough bread. was more like a white bread to me, weak on the sour. also may have been too toasty bc the roof of my mouth was definitely scratched up. the home fries were probably the best part of the meal; which btw, if you're thinking "house made cut potatoes w/ onions or peppers" like i did, it wasn't lol. but I was okay with these seasoned commercial breakfast potatoes lol. ; for $16 --this dish didn't live up to it Short Rib Hash - my partner got this; he asked for over-easy eggs, they came more medium/hard. was weak on the short rib, looked more like really shredded n cooked beef shreds/strings. he thought it was mediocre. I also had a piece of the french toast and pancakes as well. French toast was also really basic, eggy bread, nothing special there. Pancakes, i didn't bother but my partner said it was rubbery. I'd probably come back for desserts; they make 'em in-house and they look pretty good! but i don't think i'll be running back here any time soon.

Yelp
Who doesn't love all day breakfast and a good ole diner? Well, Beeliner will exceed your expectations like it did mine. The word "Diner" certainly sets an image in my mine but when I walked in I was pleasantly surprised. Very modern, renovated, and cheerful. They had lots of tempting options but went with the pot roast hash. The meat was so tender and just right. Went perfect with the potatoes and other vegetables in the dish. The fried egg was final touch to this masterpiece and it was so filling! Friend ordered the waffles and side of bacon and eggs. Took a bite of the eggs which possibly were the best scrambled eggs I've ever had. If you're ever in the area, swing by this diner you won't regret it!

Yelp
Went to the Beeliner Diner on a Saturday morning around 10am. I love the feel of the diner. It's very bright and inviting. We were seated immediately in a booth. My friend and I had both had the Jumbo Pineapple Mimosa and I had the Waffles with Eggs and Bacon. I loved how thick the bacon was and the waffles were really good. The portion sizes were really nice and I was extremely pleased. I will absolutely be back.
google avatar

Kayla G.

Yelp
Their selection of breakfast and lunch classics was delightful. I got the beeliner Bennie and it was so good, I wish I had grabbed a picture. Came around 10:30am on a Saturday and was quick to get a table. Service was good and quick! Will be back again when I crave diner food! The bee theme is definitely unique.

Yelp
I decided to check out a pizza place that offers vegan options, ALX Pizza while visiting DC. Before you think, umm why is she mentioning this on the Beeliner Diner Yelp account, let me explain. ALX Pizza is a pop-up concept that runs out of Beeliner Diner. So first let me say, I had no clue about this because I was just told to look up their website which is alxpizza.com. I'm usually very skeptical of pop ups and ghost kitchens that claim to offer vegan options. Im always nervous they'll forget and put real cheese or meat on it. Just my paranoia! Unfortunately I should have passed on this option! Ordered through delivery service and the order was wrong! Not only that, but it was the most bland forgettable pizza I've had. Looks are deceiving! It looks great but that's about all that's great. So disappointing!!! Eating the tasteless pizza reminded me of the time I tried eating a rice cake...tastes like nothingness! Bland and boring! Sorry to say this! Maybe it was an off day or a new person made the pizza. I don't know. Hopefully it's just a fluke but I won't be spending my money to try another one.

Yelp
First time here and it was a great experience. The staff was nice and helpful. The decor was beautiful, bee-themed everything! I had the Reuben Sandwich with regular fries and it was yummy! Everything came out hot and tasty. The fries were very hot and crispy. My mom had the Chicken and Waffles with a side of eggs and home fries. The chicken didn't have much flavor but it was crispy. The Belgium waffles, eggs, and potatoes were good. Overall 10/10 would recommend!

Devin S.

Yelp
Came in on a Wednesday morning around 11am. So pretty empty. Had really comfortable bar seating. And probably the nicest table seating I've seen at any bar. Had the apple pie warmed up . And naturally service was great.
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
New menu items. Loaded grits were good. I ordered the chicken fried steak. Comes with hash browns and two eggs. I also ordered a side of chorizo sausage. Wow, the chicken fried steak was tender and flavorful. We had wings with garlic soy which were good as well. For dessert, we had Dutch apple pie. Very nice and delicious. The service was good. The ambiance is casual.

Yelp
Burger undercooked. Asked for mustard 3 times and never got it. Decor cool but that's it.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday morning around 10:00am, and was a little surprised the place wasn't more crowded for being a diner. This place was just ok. We ordered the short rib hash and breakfast sandwich. The short ribs themselves were pretty bland and dry. The sandwich was also ok, nothing overwhelming. They also seemed a bit short staffed, took a while to get served and our check when we wanted to leave, but they could have just been missing a server or two. Overall this place was a little disappointing, and not the best diner food. Cool interior, but for food I rather go to Bob & Edith's or somewhere else.

Sandra M.

Yelp
One of my favorite places indeed. The first time I came here I got their Tex-mex eggrolls. They're super amazing and served with a green goddess sauce. The flavor of the egg roll is perfectly balanced and the tortilla tastes super fresh. I highly recommend this dish. Today was my second time there. I of course had to get the Tex-mex egg rolls again. I also got a Belgian waffle which was absolutely divine. It was airy and had a good crunch too. My brother accompanied me and he got their French toast which was a beautiful portion and very tasty. Jeff A. was my server today. Absolutely attentive and super nice. He made sure our needs were taken care of and allowed us to vibe out at the beeliner cafe. Always greeted and talked to us with a smile. If you're in the area or a local, definitely come here. You'll leave with a happy belly.

Yelp
Good breakfast/diner spot in area with plenty of parking. Service was great and interior is pleasant.

Max R.

Yelp
Staff are really nice (have conversations tell you about their coffee etc.) Food is amazing bit pricey, but worth it Ambience is amazing with the paintings and the lights and the music and " breakfast made by mom" feeling and taste) I would recommend the tower cakes, the cherry pie slice, and the Belgian waffles
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
Wanted this place to be great and on par with Bob and Ediths as I like diners. What they got right: Breakfast burrito was big What they need to improve on: Home fries served cold Could taste the butter Cold syrup to the point it cooled the waffle Country fried steak was an interesting interpretation. Not awful but too much batter (way too much). Atmosphere is great and service is great.

Yelp
Beeliner Restaurant falls short of capturing the magic of the beloved Atlantis it replaced. While the wait time for our food was excessive (over an hour!), especially considering pre-made items, the quality was underwhelming. My wife's Reuben was just OK, the fries oily, and the chicken and waffles lacked flavor. Even the carrot cake slices and southwestern eggrolls couldn't save the experience. With a final bill around $80 (including tip), the value simply wasn't there. While inflation is impacting restaurants everywhere, Beeliner's pricing feels excessive for the quality offered. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant based on our experience.
google avatar

Jim V.

Yelp
This place is great! The decor is super fun and it's a traditional old school diner with a modern flair. Order anything from the Greek section. It's amazing. Very friendly staff and cool vibes. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Katherine H.

Yelp
Really delicious, high quality dishes and coffee, but the service is really uneven. Several older servers and a friendly younger server behind the food/drink bar are attentive, but a younger male server got our order completely, repeatedly wrong and some of the 20-something servers today actually seem irritated that customers are in the restaurant, never greeted one customer. This place needs to retrain its servers.
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
Cute little dinner with tasty food. The BLT is classic with a delicious garlic aioli and nicely spiced waffle fries. The chicken and waffles has nice juicy, crisp chicken and really fluffy waffles. The one stand out that I have not tried is their giant tower cakes. They look overwhelming so likely won't be ordering, but it is fun to walk in and be greeted by a row of giant cakes

Yelp
The pizza at @alxpizza is so good! I especially loved the Saucy Bird pizza the most! The lights and restaurant is so pretty to! Very enjoyable :) Thank you for the great meal! -Jahhman

Yelp
Just visited with a group of friends and had a wonderful time thanks to the manager David. David was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable of the diners story and the delicious options that were on the menu. loved the esthetics of the diners interior design as well.

Yelp
Beeliner Diner in Alexandria, VA has expanded their classic diner menu to include pizza options thru their pop up concept, ALX Pizza. There are 6 signature pizzas you can choose from or you can opt to build your own. And if you vegetarian or vegan, there are vegan toppings that satisfy your needs. Before you leave don't forget to take a fresh baked pie or slice of cake home.

Amanda W.

Yelp
Great meal with the kids. Food was good, service was excellent and the kids loved the bee themed decor.

Yelp
Food is okay, desserts and cocktails are good. Service can be painfully slow. When they first opened I loved the friendly vibe, but now it's just slow.

Yelp
Came back here again for breakfast with a friend. Food is pretty good and service is okay too. Ambiance is pretty much the diner feel. If you are looking for diner food, try this place out. Our breakfast sandwich was good but a little greasy. Our server was okay, but not as attentive, and it took much too long to get us our check.

Yelp
If you haven't been to Beeliner Diner yet, know they have a little bit of everything for everyone. I went for Breakfast both times I've gone. My server Sammy was great! I have been well taken care of each time I've been and yet haven't leveled up from ordering the same thing. Here's what I ordered; The 3 Cheese Omlette w/ spinach, mushrooms, vegan sausage & onion. I'd come back for an omelette and did! Let's get into the home fries though... too good! Who knew something so basic could be this good. They were crispy, salted JUST RIGHT. I don't know how to describe it... coulda fooled me if ya'll told me they were frozen because they tasted fresh AF. ...Was not a fan of the salad dressing that came with my side salad but I know that I need some greens in my life right now. Drinks: Cappuccino Psst (21+) Happy Hour is from 4p to 7p

Yelp
The Beeliner Diner was an great place for brunch! The service, food and ambiance were on point. Our waitress was very attentive and made sure we were good during brunch. The place itself was nice and clean. My wife's favorite color is yellow so she automatically loved the place because everything was yellow. Food wise - My wife loved the mimosa and her vegan meal. The home fries were cooked perfectly and to end it with a good warm apple pie was unexpected. I had the spring mule which was good and the buffalo wings which were spicy but taste very good and were also a good size. I also had the pancakes which were great. The only thing that wasn't a favorite was the sausage because it didn't really have flavor but the bacon made up for it. The fact that they have options for me and my vegan wife was top tier. We will definitely be back!
